DRINK PERRIER, DRINK EXTRAORDINAIRE! * PRESS RELEASE Perrier bubbles and Roland-Garros balls have spent thirty-eight years together. As old as Arnaud Clement or Tommy Haas. But no one is resting on their laurels. From the bucket hats that flood through the gates to the fizz of little green bottles, taking in an app that “warholises” spectators along the way, Perrier has always known how to keep the romance alive. At the French Open, then, things sparkle a new every year. Already officially teamed up with Roland-Garros until 2018, the ruby anniversary promises to be hot. After all a fever starts at 38. Sparkling and enchanting, the wonder of Perrier bubbles will once again be on show up and down the walkways at Porte d’Auteuil. 4 “stunning” events for 4 times the fun include the must do Immersion Extraordinaire, a balloon trip in the Perrier galaxy of the 4th millennium, a sort of Avatar meets The 5th Element! Old is beautiful. 19 like the 19 th Legends’ Trophy, in partnership with Perrier since 2011. From 31 May to 5 June, 36 tennis legends, with a record of victories as long as your arm, will unleash their shots on the doubles court to the delight of lovers of tennis nostalgia. Count their Grand Slam titles like you count sheep and you’ll fall asleep at 81! 350,000 bottles of Perrier are consumed at Porte d’Auteuil each year, including 200,000 for the players and organisers. Nothing surprising in that though. After all, 40 bottles of Perrier are drunk every second worldwide. This means that last year, while Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka were fighting it out for the Musketeers’ Trophy, 405,214 bottles were consumed around the planet! The year 1989 was the year of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the year Voyager 2 did a Neptune fly-past and the year of Michael Chang’s legendary underarm service against Ivan Lendl at the French Open. It was also the year the chair from which the umpire oversaw that quarter final first bore the Perrier logo. Since then, the most famous sparkling mineral water in the world hasn’t once missed the view from on high in the umpire’s seat. 4 PERRIER AND ROLAND-GARROS: WHERE IT NEVER STOPS SPARKLING… WHEN THE ORDINARY BECOMES EXTRAORDINAIRE… 19 350 000 1989 With Perrier, the years pass but this year is never like the last… Perrier’s impulsiveness is in step, with new fruity flavours, that little touch of boldness, elegance and reciprocity. For further information, reservations and purchase of tickets for the Perrier Legends’ Trophy, visit the website: www.rolandgarros.com THE PERRIER LEGENDS’ TROPHY NOSTALGIA AND HUMOUR WITH THE LEGENDS… They are the legends of tennis and when they play at the French Open, one inevitably gets out one’s handkerchief… to weep with nostalgia on thinking back to those hours spent watching them on TV, or to laugh out loud at the antics to which they alone have the secret… It’s your choice. The main thing is to be there. From 31 May to 5 June, the Suzanne Lenglen court and the smaller surrounding courts will host “tennis stand-up” with extraordinary matches where nothing is more important than the pleasure given and experienced. For the 19 th Perrier Legends’ Trophy, Mansour Bahrami has once again brought together a plethora of legends bordering on indecency, with, to cap them all, Yannick Noah, the last French winner of the French Open, in attendance. Extraordinaire like… the first Legends’ Trophy At the start we had the likes of Roy Emerson, Ken Rosewall, Stan Smith, Manuel Santana and John Newcombe. I remember a Rosewall-Newcombe versus Smith and Tony Roche. Together the four of them had a total of twenty Grand Slams… Seeing those guys on court was just outstanding. Extraordinaire like… a wonderful turnaround It was a final, I was playing with Forget against McEnroe and Leconte. We led a zero-set, 5-4, 40-15. I was serving for the match. Christian Bimes, President of the Federation and Patrice Clerc, the Tournament Director, came on court with the cup. McEnroe saw them and didn’t like it at all. They played all out and finally won the set 7-6. John yelled at them: “Come back in an hour, the match isn’t over!” They won the game. Extraordinaire like… a spectator on court About ten years ago, I was playing with Nastase and he missed an easy ball. A guy in the crowd, shouted at him: “Ilie, you’re too old!”. Nastase replied: “Come down here and take my place!” The guy came down, he played two points and never touched the ball. Ilie gave him a little kick in the butt to send him back to the stands! Extraordinaire like… a shot (almost) on target Let’s say I stopped that one! I was watching Nastase- Clerc against Wilander-Pernfors. Whenever the flying television camera passed overhead José Luis would take a pot shot at it with the ball. He was getting closer and closer with each attempt and I got really anxious about him breaking it! I ended up going down on court and asking him to stop… Extraordinaire like… the fan named Djoko… Last year, I was talking to Boris Becker in the locker room when Djoko arrived and said “Mansour, I’ve seen your videos on Youtube. They made me laugh. I hope you won’t take it badly but I’ve copied some of your stuff.” I replied: “Coming from you, that’s an honour, feel free!”. Extraordinaire like… McEnroe’s moods McEnroe is always stressing me out! One year he told me he wanted to play the first match. I do the program and his brother told me that in the end no, he wanted to play second. At 11 pm I got a phone call: “No way! I want to play the first match.” I was calling the other 7 players until 2 am to sort things out, Australia, Ecuador, South Africa, I had to leave 25 messages to change the schedule… Extraordinaire like… Yannick Noah’s jubilee I would love Jim Courier to take part in the Perrier Legends’ Trophy but he spends all day commentating. Gustavo Kuerten can’t play because of a sore hip. Andre Agassi doesn’t want to come, he just plays two or three matches a year for his foundation, and Pete Sampras hates traveling… Fortunately however, with the Legends we do have there will be some great games this year, especially with Yannick. It’s his jubilee. Very promising! INTERVIEW EXTRAORDINAIRE WITH MANSOUR BAHRAMI… PERRIER AND ROLAND GARROS: NOTABLE DATES 1978 Partnership signed between Perrier and Roland Garros.
