Many shopping opportunities are available in Lewis County and shopping in the hometown provides the commu-nity with much needed revenue.

Local businesses give back more to the community. For every one dollar spent at local businesses, at least half is reinvested locally. With more dollars staying in the community, more jobs stay in the community, more opportunities are available to create more jobs. More tax dollars are available to go to schools and roads. More dollars are available to keep the community safe by providing quali-fi ed law enforcement personnel. The convenience of having local merchants offers residents the ability to save time, gas and money. Local merchants offer great customer service. Local businesses value, respect and appreciate their cus-tomers. Their customers are their friends and neighbors. They are also the ones who give generously to all the local events to support the small town projects.Shop local and fi nd the perfect gift for your family and friends. Local business-es have a lot to offer. Following is a few gift ideas and where they can be found in

your hometown.Convenience stores and gas stations

have gift cards, beverages, novelty gifts and, automotive items.

Grocery stores for the wonderful holi-day foods, gift cards and everyone loves a homemade treat. There are several local businesses that carry farm products, new merchandise, holiday décor, cleaning supplies, auto care items, and many other gift ideas. Flowers always cheer a person and the local fl oral shops have real and silk arrangements and other gift items on display that are a wonderful way to say thank you to someone special.

Furniture stores, antique shops, thrift stores, fl ea markets, auctions and holi-day fund raisers all have merchandise for sale. Give a collector a special item that they will keep forever or start someone’s new collection by purchasing something that refl ects their interest. Many beauti-ful handmade items produced by local residents can be found at various church or club fundraisers. For many of these non for profi t groups, the holiday season funds support their projects throughout the year.

Local shops offer apparel that has hometown team logo shirts and hoodies that any fan young or old wears to sup-

port their high school. Give a gift certifi cate to a local restaurant, take someone out to eat, or dine in or carry out after a day of shopping.

These are just a few of the many things local businesses have to of-fer. While spending time shopping, enjoy the beau-tiful holiday decorations most towns are display-ing, the friendly people in the stores, the convenient parking and the knowl-edge that dollars spent in the area help make Lewis County a great place to live.

The Lewis County community has al-ways been generous and helpful to those in need at Christmas and many organi-zations, businesses and individuals have made sure that the children of the area have a special Christmas.

For many years the Canton State Bank sponsored a Dress-A-Doll contest. The bank would provide the undressed dolls and persons could pick up a doll and make an outfi t for it. The dressed dolls would be put on display at the Canton State Bank and persons could vote for their favorite. Winners would receive a cash prize and ribbon.

After the contest, half the dolls would be given to girls in the area and the other half were auctioned off and the money went to buy boy gifts and then donated to local charities to be distributed to deserv-ing children.

The contest was popular for several years. According to an article from the the early 70s, Mrs. Robert Rice was the grand prize winner. Other winners were Beulah Hays, Juanita St. Clair, Judy Fer-guson, Flossie Leach, and Lucy Haller. Many ladies of the community joined in this effort with over 100 dolls entered in the contests.

Justice Clay made a beautiful Gingerbread house at the LaGrange Youth Cen-ter.

Youth of all ages participated in building Gingerbread houses at the LaGrange Youth Center. The youngest was Jocelyn 6, and William at 16 was one of the oldest.

Many youngsters used their creativity at the La-Grange Community Youth Center to build these sweet Gingerbread houses.

The youth at the LaGrange Communi-ty Youth Center have been busy creating gingerbread houses. Margaret Vannaken, a youth center volunteer, and instructor for the craft, said she and the children had a wonderful time and the kids were very creative in their designs.

The houses were built using a milk carton as the base, then covering it with graham crackers. The children had sev-eral options of candy or other sweets to decorate their house. Some of the chil-dren fi lled every available space on their house, some of the kids had a more sparse look. All the houses were put on display for everyone to admire and a winner would be voted on.

Interesting Facts About The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

The fi rst Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was erected in 1931, two years before the opening of Rock-efeller Plaza, where the tree now draws thousands of tourists each year. The tradition began when construc-tion workers hard at work on building Rockefeller Cen-ter decorated a roughly 20-foot tall balsam fi r tree on Christmas Eve in 1931. Strings of cranberries and tin cans were among the items used to decorate the tree.

While there was no tree in 1932, the fi rst offi cial tree was unveiled in 1933 in Rockefeller Plaza, and the light-ing ceremony was broadcast over NBC Radio. The 1933 tree, at 50 feet tall, dwarfed the 1931 tree. However, the 1933 tree paled in comparison to the 10-ton Norway Spruce erected in 1999, which measured 100-feet tall and remains the tallest tree ever erected at Rockefeller Center.

The tradition of the Rockefeller Center tree continues to evolve to this day, but the evergreen it is no longer lit with incandescent light bulbs. LED bulbs that consume a fraction of the energy of traditional bulbs are the bulbs of choice now.

In addition, in 2007 Rockefeller Center partnered with Habitat for Humanity, who used the tree after it was taken down to furnish lumber for home construc-tion.

Many people consider pets great holiday gifts. But in spite of their popularity as presents, pets do not always make the most appropriate holiday gift.

Giving a pet as a present seems like a great idea, but shoppers might want to give it more consideration be-fore giving a gift that is such a considerable responsi-bility. A puppy at Christmas or a bunny at Easter may be given with good intentions, but that well-meaning sentiment can easily backfi re, ending with the pet being given up for adoption when recipients don't feel up to the task of raising a pet. In such instances, the compan-ion animal pays the steepest price.

Though it often is, buying a pet should not be an im-pulse purchase. You see sad eyes looking back at you from behind a cage door and want to give that animal a new home. However, introducing an animal into a family is not a decision to take lightly. You must factor how well the pet will fi t in with the family dynamic. Do schedules allow for quality time spent with the animal? Is it a fi nancially good time to care for an animal that will cost money? Are you aware of how long the pet will live? Making those big decisions for a person on the re-ceiving end of your well-intentioned gift may be cross-ing a line. Would you want to have such a life-changing decision made for you?

Furthermore, the holiday season is not one ideally suited for making careful decisions. People are often swept up in emotions and even stress, and shoppers may not be thinking rationally.

The hectic nature of the holiday season can be a diffi -cult time for a pet to grow acclimated to its new environ-ment. He or she may be frightened to assimilate or take longer to settle down. Pets often need several weeks of quiet and constant care to become comfortable in their new environments. Here are some other reasons why the holidays are not a good time for new pets.

* Holiday visitors may frighten the new pet and he or she may become weary of strangers at the outset.

* The activities in the household may pose safety hazards for the young animal. An abundance of rich foods and various decorations could be ingested, poten-tially causing illness.

* New pets should be carefully supervised around children to see how they behave. A child may not be ac-customed to handling a puppy or kitten and could injure the animal. Similarly, the pet may be skittish and lash out at the child. Adults busy with holiday obligations may be easily distracted and miss how their child is in-

teracting with the new pet.

* Once the glow of the holidays wear off, children may be disillusioned with the new responsibility that has fallen into their hands. They may not like the re-sponsibility that comes with being a good pet owner.

Reputable pet breeders and animal shelters often dis-courage individuals from adopting or purchasing pets as holiday gifts. Many organizations and animal busi-nesses require a careful vetting of potential pet parents to ensure the animal will be placed with a family and in a home that is suitable.

Animal welfare groups warn that an estimated 50 percent of pets adopted during the holidays end up right back at shelters. This can scar the pet. Avoid the tempta-tion of giving a companion animal as a present. If it is your intention to gift an animal, talk to the gift recipient and discuss the pros and cons beforehand. Then you can work together and make the right decision for all parties involved, including the pet.

Captain Sarah L. Eberhard, director of the Division of Drug and Crime Control, announces the arrest of Glenn C. Head for the murder of William L. Bacon.

On Tuesday, December 11, 2012, troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control arrested Glen C. Head, 59, of Novelty, Missouri, for second degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of William L. Bacon, 67, of Novelty, Missouri. The arrest is a result of a shooting that occurred in rural Knox County near Novelty, Missouri, on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Head has been formally charged by the Knox County prosecuting attorney, and is being held currently at the Adair County Jail on a $250,000 cash only bond.

The above charges are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of these charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

The Carl Johann Memorial Library at Culver-Stockton College has recently completed a children’s library room. The room is equipped with thousands of children’s books, educational toys and a large LED television equipped with AppleTV. IPads are also available for children upon request. The goal of the children’s wing is to keep all children reading during summer and holiday breaks, effectively bridging the reading gap for rural children.

The addition of this wing means that there will be a higher rate of retention in literacy for rural children over the holiday break and in summer months.

Two people were struck and killed in two separate incidents that occurred recently in northeast Missouri.

In Lewis County, one person died and two others were sent to the hospital after a two vehicle accident on Dec. 17. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Cortez Robinson of Kirksville, Missouri was pronounced dead at the scene.

Robinson was standing in front of a vehicle when he was hit by an oncoming car at around 9:45 p.m. Monday night, about two miles west of Lewistown, Missouri on Highway 6. A 1996 Cadillac

Deville was parked in the roadway with hazard lights activated along westbound Mo. 6. Robinson was standing alongside the vehicle and another person, Stephanie J Toolate, 25, Kirksville, Mo., was standing in front of the vehicle. A westbound 1998 Plymouth van, driven by Jessica L. Murphy, 19, LaBelle, Mo., struck the first vehicle in the rear, then struck Cortez. Toolate’s injuries were believed caused by the first vehicle striking her after impact from the second vehicle.

Cortez was pronounced dead at the scene by Lewis County Coroner

Larry Arnold. Toolate was transported to Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, Ill., with serious injuries. Murphy was transported to Blessing Hospital, Quincy, with moderate injuries.

Also assisting at the scene were the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, Lewis County Ambulance, Knox County Ambulance and Ewing Fire and Rescue.

In Marion County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, on Dec. 16, Niecko P. Daucsavage, 18, Quincy was headed eastbound on US 24 one mile west of of West Quincy, Mo., when he struck

William C. Oliver, 35, of Taylor, Mo. It was reported that Oliver was a pedestrian and was not at a cross walk while walking south and crossing the eastbound lanes of US 24. He failed to yield to traffic and was struck by the eastbound vehicle. Oliver was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred about 3:15 a.m. The 1993 Ford F150 driven by Daucsavage, received moderate damage. Assisting at the scene was the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Palmyra Rural Fire, Marion County EMS and Adams County EMS.

many children do not have access to a variety of age-appropriate reading materials. For many areas, a public library solves this problem. Unfortunately, access to a public library is a luxury some children do not have. Families who do not live in Canton city limits have to pay a $50 annual fee to use the Canton Public Library. This amount can be a burden for some families. The Culver-Stockton library does not charge a fee to check out books.

One of the important changes that made this possible was the shift from paper books to e-books. Culver-Stockton’s library currently has about 125,000 paper books and over 90,000 e-books in its collection, not

including the 33,000 full-text periodical titles online.

The room was part of a series of renovations to the Culver-Stockton library done this summer, funded by the comprehensive campaign, A Vision for the Future. Other

renovations include new carpeting and paint, as well as the addition of a science-themed coffee shop, The Lab.

On Dec. 11, 2012 the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dustin Joe Hooper, age 18, of LaBelle, Mo., for Sexual Misconduct in the First Degree, a Class D Felony. Mr. Hooper is alleged to have sent inappropriate sexual photographs of himself to a minor 12 and/or 13 years of age. Hooper was released after posting $10,000.00 cash bond.

On Dec. 10, 2012, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office arrested Christopher W. Rowsey, age 25, of rural LaGrange, Mo., on one count of Defrauding a Secured Creditor. Mr. Rowsey is alleged to have disposed of the security interest/collateral of the United State Bank without providing the proceeds to the bank. Rowsey was released after posting bond.

On Dec. 14, 2012, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office arrested David Wurtzberger, age 68, of rural LaBelle, Mo., on one count of felony stealing. Mr. Wurtzberger is alleged to have conspired to steal metal from a rural Lewis County farm. This was in relation a November 2011 report of theft and ongoing investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.Mr. Wurtzberger was released after posting $10,000.00 cash bond.

Lewis County Farm Bureau leaders attended the 98th Missouri Farm Bureau Annual Meeting at the Lake of the Ozarks, Dec 2-4. During the meet-ing, county voting del-egates approved Missouri Farm Bureau policies for 2013, heard from legisla-tive and agriculture lead-ers, and received recogni-tion for their Farm Bureau activities during the past year. Lewis County lead-ers attending were: Brian Munzlinger, Michele Munzlinger, Pamela De-ters, and Robert Deters.

The Lewis County Farm Bureau was hon-ored with an Award of Excellence for public re-lations, promotion and education programs dur-ing the 98th annual meet-ing of Missouri Farm Bureau at Lake of the Ozarks December 3. The announcement was made by Blake Hurst, Missouri Farm Bureau president, who presented the award to Michele Munzlinger, president of Lewis Coun-ty Farm Bureau.

Only one award of ex-cellence is presented in each category of the orga-nization’s gold star pro-gram. The five categories are: membership, market-ing/commodities, public policy, young farmers and ranchers/leadership development, and public relations/promotion and education.

Nov. 28, 1987 A solemn memorial cer-emony was held at the LaGrange Elementary School playground to recognize two classmates that died under separate circumstances in August. Students, staff, friends and family members remem-bered Stephanie Sue Scott and Carroll Wayne Bring-er. Playground equip-ment built with LaGrange PTA Funds has a memory plaque dedicated to the two students. Stephanie Scott died Aug. 1 after being struck by a pick up truck in LaGrange. Carroll Bringer died following heart problems Aug. 11. Dale and Paul Neisen are the new owners of Lewis-town Feed and Farm in Lewistown. The business was formerly owned by Henry Geisendorfer and was known as Henry’s Feed and Farm Supply.


Dec. 6, 1962 Morton Schnitzer, whose grocery store and living quarters were destroyed by fi re on Nov. 4, has pur-chased adjoining prop-erty from Mutual Grange Insurance Co., and has begun building. The new building will be a two sto-ry concrete structure with living quarters above the store. Mr. and Mrs. George El-lison celebrated 65 years of marriage on Nov. 25 with over 170 relatives and friends present, in-cluding all eight children.


Dec. 18, 1937 Rice’s Market has in-stalled a new Keokuk dis-play refrigerator that per-mits the display of meats and produce in a very ef-fective way. Dr. Roland G. Muel-ler, head of the Canton Community Hospital, has accepted a position with a railroad hospital at Two Harbors, Minn., at a large salary, and ex-pects to leave Sunday to take up the new work.

Dec. 12, 1927 Dr. Jere T. Muir, 80, for-mer president of LaGrange College, for 60 yeas an educator, died Friday. Mr. Muir was president of LaGrange College for 11 years, was head of the teacher training depart-ment of Kirksville Normal School for seven years, and vice-president of that school for three years. For seven years he taught in the summer school in Culver-Stockton, retiring from that position three years ago.

Frank Emery with a gang of men began Mon-day tearing down the old water milll, situated a mile west of Monticello. This was among the fi rst mills to be built in the county. John Staples erected the fi rst water mill on this site the fall of 1834. The fi rst

mill to be built in that ear-ly day was indeed a crude affair. A year or two later Mr. Staples erected a nice size building and equipped his mill for grinding fl our. In October 1856, J.P. Caldwell bought the mill and in 1868 erected the building that is now be-ing torn down. For many years, “Caldwell’s Water Mill” was known form Marion County to the Iowa line and the farmers throughout this entire ter-ritory went to mill with great loads of wheat and after would have to wait several days waiting their turn.

steam at the gas well last Saturday the drill pierced a vein of chalybeate water of fi ne quality. The shaft was down 480 feet, but within a very short time the water fl owed over the surface. Hundreds of people visited the well on Sunday and sampled the water which was pro-nounced palatable though strongly impregnated with mineral products. At the time of going to press the drill is down 600 feet and still the water fl ows over the surface. The workmen considered the super abun-dance of water fatal to gas possibilities for they say that unless the water can be controlled it will drown out the gas even if found. There is talk of removing to some other location but the change will probably not be made. The shaft will be put down 1500 feet where it is and the search will probably will with that. We understand that the election for mayor of Can-ton on Tuesday to fi ll the vacancy by death of W. H. Graves, was spirited. The candidates were B.B. Brooks and Perry Mun-day. There was a full vote polled and resulted in the election of Mr. Munday by a majority of 36 votes. There was a general jollifi -cation at night over the re-sult. There were 464 votes polled.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has set January 18, 2013, as the next cut-off date for rank-ing applications for about $25.6 million available through its Environmental Quality Incentives Pro-gram (EQIP).

EQIP is the agency’s largest Farm Bill conser-vation program. It helps producers of agricultural products improve water quality, build healthier soil, improve grazing and forest lands, conserve energy, en-hance organic operations, and achieve other environ-mental benefi ts.

State Conservationist J.R. Flores says that while NRCS accepts applications for EQIP on a continuous basis, producers must fi le applications by the Janu-ary 18 deadline to be con-sidered for the next round of application funding. Ap-plications fi led after Janu-ary 18 will be considered in the next ranking period if funds remain available.

Flores says EQIP offers farmers, ranchers and for-estland managers a variety of options to conserve nat-ural resources while boost-ing production on their lands.

“The nearly $26 million that we have available for use in Missouri this fi scal year will go a long way to-ward improving the envi-ronment and the economy of Missouri’s rural com-munities,” he says.

conservation activities, such as irrigation water management, reduced tillage, fi eld buffers, ro-tational grazing systems, animal waste manage-ment systems and much more.

• Seasonal High Tun-nel Initiative: helps pro-ducers install high tun-nels designed to extend the growing season into the cold months, increase productivity, keep plants at a steady temperature and conserve water and energy.

• Organic Initiative: helps producers to install conservation practices on certifi ed organic op-erations or those working toward organic certifi ca-tion.

Teddie Nicole Neil of Palmyra has again received a spot on the All American Cheerleading Squad. Neil who is a senior at Palmy-ra High School, won this honor last year, which took her to London, England. She thought this “once in a lifetime” experience was so awesome that she had to go for it just one more time.

During the summer, she attended a camp which is one of the requirements. She competed and was se-lected and once again this honor takes her to Lon-don, England where she

will perform with other All Americans in the New Years Day Parade.

While in London last year, Neil asked the All American Leaders why they had been invited to participate in the Queen’s Jubilee New Year’s Day Parade. She was told that the schools in London have no bands, no cheer-leaders and no pom- poms. By inviting the United States to perform, this was providing something that would be new and differ-ent that London does not see on a regular basis. She then asked about the men

who play instruments and participate in the “Chang-ing of the Guards” at Buckingham Palace. The answer was those men are individually trained for that job.

Teddie knew once again she had another task to achieve and that was to raise the money she would need to pay for her trip. Since this was an indi-vidual award, it would not be supported through the school. She appreciates all her family and friends in the communities for all their help and their support on this journey. She is very

excited to be going back and has made the “list of things to see and do” that she was not able to fit in the schedule the first time around. She will be ac-companied by her Aunt Dawn. They will leave on December 26 and return on January 2.

Teddie is the daughter of Brad and Tammy Neil and her brothers are Brady, Braxden and Brayden. Grandparents are Bert and Pat Cottrell, LaGrange, Dorothy Neil, Quincy and Don and Lou Neil, Canton.

South Union Baptist Church observed their Advent service on Sunday with Nelson Carter portraying Itzkah, the shepherd, and the choir presenting special music.

Erin Johnson has had the misfortune to break her col-larbone after a fall. She is a busy lady and I’m sure she didn’t want to work this into her schedule.

John and Susan Knoche had a graduation party for their daughter, Ashlan, on Saturday evening. Ashlan graduated from Truman University on Saturday morn-ing and the gathering was at the Paul Durst home with family and friends. It was a great time of year for Ashlan and for the family to get together.

Loretta Bringer attended a Christmas party at the home of Michelle Hosley in Hannibal on Monday af-ternoon. This was to thank the auxiliary volunteers that work in the gift shop at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

South Union Baptist Church choir presented “A Christmas Celebration” on Sunday evening. Narrators were Joe Hattey, John Carter, and Bro. Jeremy Wallace.

A duet was sung by Kristen Ritterbush and Nelson Carter and a solo by Rachel Shepherd. The Mary and Joseph scene was portrayed by Bro. Jeremy and Rachel Wallace and their new baby Zoey. There was a large at-tendance and a number of people visiting that had lived in Maywood. This made for a fun fellowship hour. Ev-eryone enjoyed singing Happy Birthday to Andy As-chemann as it was her 19th birthday. She is the grand-daughter of the late Mary Louise”Charlie” Reid who was a long time choir member at the church.

Sympathy is extended to the Rodney Bringer family. Terri’s mother, Marilyn Cole, went to be with her Lord last week and the visitation of family and friends was on Saturday afternoon.

Charilyn Stalder attended the Vespers at Quincy High School on Sunday afternoon with the Bill Stadler family.

George Johnson is in the Lewis County Nursing Home in Canton and receiving therapy. He was in the

bad accident in Ralls County a few weeks ago. Marvin Bringer was a vis-itor this past week.

David and Donna Stice held their Christmas get to-gether Saturday, Dec. 15. Present were BJ. And Micah Bush, Macy, Chloe and Declin; Lonnie and Laura Mey-ers, Lorna, Logan, Lorelai and Landon. Grandmothers Viola Tracy and Gerry Stice were also in attendance and enjoyed the festivities.

Sue Powers and Carol Tanner of LaGrange attended their company Christmas carry in party in Quincy.

Phyllis Heindselman joined other members of the Quincy Symphony for lunch Wednesday. The following day she drove to her son, Matt Heindselman in Wash-ington, Mo., to surprise her granddaughter Emma and attend her school program.

Don Sherwood reported this has been a good year for the children shoppers. No child has to prove eligibility to purchase these low priced gifts. Don was grateful for the generous donations to this effort and hopes it en-courages children to give to others. He will remain open until 4-5 p.m. on Dec. 24 for late minute shoppers.

To please her mother, Myrna Hoteling, Tina Mc-Cutchan decorated the grave for her father, Deane and placed an orange on her grandfather’s Roy McDowell’s grave. Roy felt everyone should have an orange in his Christmas stocking. They were a special treat when he was a boy. He would fi nd this amusing.

Pam Shubert came Wednesday and took her parents, Bert and Pat Cottrell, Christmas shopping. Her sister and husband, Tammy and Brad Neil, joined them for lunch. That evening, Aunt Pam took her nephews, Brax-ton, Brayden and Brady to supper. Pam returned home on Thursday.

The Lewis County Nursing Home residents and staff have been busy preparing for the holiday season with many activities and decorating. On Dec. 4, the annual memorial service, honoring the deceased residents for the year, was held.

The staff held their annual Christmas party on Dec. 7. The residents went downtown on Dec. 6 and enjoyed watching the Canton Lighted Parade. The Ten Mile 4-H Club visited and decorated the resident’s doors for them. The residents have made trips to Quincy to see the Avenue of the Lights. The Boy Scouts entertained the residents by singing Christmas carols on Dec. 11.

The monthly Auxiliary Birthday Party was held Dec. 13 with the Senior Stars providing the music. The residents enjoyed the Canton Tiger Choir on Dec. 18 and also the Resident Christmas Party was held and each resident received a gift.

The staff and residents at Lewis County Nursing Home wish everyone a very safe and Merry Christmas and many blessings in the New Year. Visitors are always welcome and encouraged to visit the residents.

NEWSLaBelle Community CWF

The LaBelle Community CWF held their fi rst Cookie Exchange in the basement of the La Belle Christian Church on Dec. 1 with a very good attendance and an abundance of cookies. Judy Pitford offered up prayer for the group and asked for remembrances of special Christmases. Several gave interesting tid-bits about past Christmases in their lives. Great fellowship was enjoyed. The leftover cookies were bagged up and Lucille Noble delivered them to shut-ins at the Senior housing.

The next meeting will be at the La Belle Fire Station on January 5, 8:30 to 10 a.m. All women of faith are welcome and encouraged to attend.

LaGrange Garden Club

The La Grange Garden Club met for their annual Christmas party at the home of Nancy Howe on Decem-ber 11. A carry in dinner was held and the evening was spent in fellowship. A very short meeting was held. We will have our collection for the Red Cross out East at the January meeting. Christmas cards were exchanged and food was collected for the food pantry in Canton.

The next meeting will be on January 7 at 5:30 at the LaGrange City Council Chambers. Following the regu-lar meeting, we will participate in the workshop pre-sented by John Pinkowski, Private Land Conservation-ist with the Department of Conservation. It will be open to the public and begins at 6:30.

Oyster Prairie 4-H

The Oyster Prairie 4-H club met Dec. 2 at the Dur-ham Methodist Church. A Christmas meal was enjoyed. Demonstrations were held. Kelly Adams had a demon-stration on ceramics. Ryan Waterman and Tyler Ber-horst had a demonstration on trapping. The Crystalyx program cards were collected.

A bowling party was held in Canton on Dec. 9. The Rabbit show will be March 2 at the fairgrounds in Pal-myra.

Christmas cards were signed and Christmas trivia was played. Happy Birthday was sang to those with De-cember birthdays.

The next meeting will also be at the Durham Meth-odist Church on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.

Progressive Neighbors

The Progressive Neighbors Club met Dec. 18 at the home of Kay Dodd for their Christmas carry-in lun-cheon with eight members and three guests, Donna Johns, Mary Snyder and Nancy Glisan attending. Kay had the prayer before lunch.

President Kay Dodd opened the meeting. She had the devotional, Thoughts on the kitchen towel”. She gave everyone a towel. Roll call was answered with some-thing about Christmas.

Club books were handed out and members chose a month to serve as hostess. Club dues will be collected in January. The afternoon was spent playing Bingo and regifting the Christmas presents.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, January 8 in the home of Judith Smith at noon.

Lewis County 4-H Council

Lewis County 4-H Council met December 10. Tyler Hinton and Anne Hoffman lead the pledges. Reading of the minutes and Treasurers report was approved. Bills were paid. Club reports were given by Lucky Clover, Monticello, Oyster Prairie, Pleasant Grove, and Ten Mile.

In old business, Recognition night and Christmas Party was very well attended by 4-H members. In new business, dues need to be paid by December 31. Zack Erwin discussed YPA. The group worked on the 2013 budget and ordered ribbons. Frank Graham Leadership Award forms will be due January 15. Discussed 4-H Hall Of Fame award.

The next meeting will be February 11, 2013 at 7 p.m. Minutes were submitted by Tyler Hinton.

Th e proposed work includes: Th e construction of a new 24’6” wide x 120’ long single span steel plate girder bridge with a concrete deck, with SL-1 guardrail. Bridge is supported by 14” round piles and concrete abutments. Includes all necessary appurtenances. SCOGGIN

Kenneth Ray Scoggin, age 77, of LaBelle, Mo., passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, in Boone Hospital in Columbia, Mo., with his family and friends by his side.

He was born Feb. 25, 1935, near LaBelle, Mo., the son of Edgar and Dora Mae McDaniel Scoggin.

He was united in marriage to Donna Cunningham on June 17, 1956, in LaBelle, Mo.

Kenneth received his education at County Line Hill-side School, Steffenville Grade School and graduated from LaBelle High School in 1954. He served in the United States Army Reserves. Kenneth was engaged in farming all of his life. He was an avid hunter and fi sh-erman. He enjoyed tractor pulling, gardening, playing cards, and most of all his grandchildren and great grand-son. He was a member of the Heartland Community Church. He was a lover of man’s best friend, his dogs “Dot” and Buster. He enjoyed carpentry and sneaking a smoke when visiting Davis Hardware. He loved tinker-ing and building stuff.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Hannah Rae Hartsock, a brother Mac Wayne Scoggin, two sisters-in-law Erma Scoggin and Jan Cunningham and one brother-in-law Larry Pape.

Surviving are his wife Donna Scoggin of LaBelle, Mo., two children, Steven Scoggin and wife Renee` of LaBelle, Mo., Tami Hartsock and husband Darwin of LaBelle, Mo., one brother Glenn Scoggin of La-Belle, Mo., a twin sister Kathryn Mayfi eld and hus-band Charles of Rutledge, Mo., grandchildren, Caleb Hartsock and Stephanie, Rebekah Hartsock, Joshua Hartsock, Michael Scoggin, and Matthew Scoggin, one great grandchild Kayden Hartsock, brothers–in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Pat Garnett of Payson, Ill., and John Cunningham of Quincy, Ill., and several nieces, nephews and cousins in Missouri and Illinois.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, Mo. Reverend Charles Sharpe will offi ciate the services. Burial will be in the LaBelle Cemetery. Musical record-ings will be “Amazing Grace” by Willie Nelson, “Cry-ing For Me” by Toby Keith and “Headed For The Last Roundup” by Gene Autry.

Casket bearers will be Rebekah Hartsock, Caleb Hartsock, Joshua Hartsock, Michael Scoggin, Matthew Scoggin and Scott Hoffman.

Honorary bearers will be Stephanie Hartsock, Bryce Menges, Jerry Kindhardt, Jimmy Lasswell, Bob Garnett, Joe Davis, Ronnie House, Bennie Kaylor, Joe Flake, Ron Hutcherson, Amanda Smith, Wade Goodson, Jeff Tungate, John Cunningham and the Steffenville Card Players.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. on Thursday, De-cember 20, 2012, with family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Coder Funeral Chapel in LaBelle, Mo.Memorials may be made to the American Heart Asso-ciation or Steffenville, MO Card Players. Harold J. Schott of The Haven in Sunset Home of 418 Washington Street, Quincy, Ill., formerly of LaGrange, Mo., went to meet his heavenly fam-ily on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. He died at Blessing Hospital.

Harold was the son of Frederick Herbert Schott and Pauline Fritzler Schott

Wolfe. Harold was born April 3, 1929 in Belle Forche South Dakota.

He moved to Missouri in his early teens and there he met the love of his life, Helen Martin. Harold and Helen married June 11, 1947 and she preceded him in death on July 9, 2000. They raised a family of fi ve children; Con-nie Schott (died Sept. 30, 2012), Cheryl (David) Evers-den of Fowler, Ill.; Charolette (Rod) Homan of Quincy, Ill.; Greg Schott, Canton, Mo.; Cindy (Michael) Platte of Macon, Mo..

Harold was very proud of his three grandchildren;

Tina Eversden Jones, Chad Eversden and Tyler Hill of Quincy. Harold also had two step-grandsons, Lance Homan of Mendon and Lucas Homan of Quincy. He has 2 great-grandsons, Jacob and Jarid Jones of Quincy and fi ve step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Connie Schott, a brother, a twin sister and another sister.

Harold owned and operated Schott Construction and Beauty Wall Foundations and built many distinguished homes in the tri-state area. In his later years he and his wife owned the Owl’s Nest Restaurant in Canton, Mo.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum with inurnment following in LaGrange Memorial Cem-etery, LaGrange, Mo.

Arrangements are pending with Arnold’s Funeral Home in Canton.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages everyone to make good decisions regarding their New Year’s celebration. If the weather is bad, allow extra time for traveling or be fl exible with your plans. Staying home might be the best option.

If residents do plan to drive to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffi c laws. If the plans include alcohol, plan for alternative transportation. The roadway is no place for a driver who has been drinking. If a resident causes a traffi c crash, the new year might bring getting arrested, legal fees, medical bills, or jail time! If a resident kills or injures someone, they’ll pay a price for the rest of their life. No one wants to begin 2013 in jail. Be smart! Designate a sober driver or take a taxi.

During the New Year’s traffi c crash counting period from 6 p.m., Friday, December 28, 2012 to 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, January 1, 2013, all available offi cers will be on the roadways. Last year, 777 traffi c crashes occurred in Missouri over the New Year’s holiday weekend. In those crashes

six people were killed and 311 were injured. One person was killed or injured every 14.8 minutes.

Of course, no matter how safely a person drives, they can’t control other drivers. Therefore, the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves from all types of hazardous drivers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.

After two seasons, Mi-chael Prunty has resigned as head men’s soccer coach at Culver-Stockton College.

Prunty, who was hired in January 2011, posted a 4-30-2 overall record and a 0-14 mark in Heart of America Athletic Confer-ence play during his two seasons. He was 1-16-1 in 2011 and 3-14-1 this past season on the Hill.

The Tigers went on to play against Hannibal on Saturday, Dec. 15 and won once more 70-61, bringing their season to 8-0. The next coach will in-herit a team that returns 20 players that were either listed as a sophomore or freshman on the 2012 var-sity roster.

“There will be a void left by the departure of Michael

Prunty,” said Greg McVey, Director of Athletics at Culver-Stockton College. “Michael had started his program from the ground up and was in the process of building a nice pro-gram. He recruited gifted student-athletes who ex-celled both on the fi eld and in the classroom. Whoever replaces Michael will have him to thank in the future as they reap the rewards of his hard work.”

McVey said the search for a new coach would be-gin immediately.

HIGHLAND BASKETBALLThe Highland Cougars and the Lady Cougars played against Putnam Co. High School on Friday, Dec. 14. Hundreds of people attended the open house at the Ursa Farmers Coop in Canton on Dec. 14.

The late Dale McCutchan, a longtime supporter of having an Ursa Farmers Coop facility in northeast Missouri, was honored by having his family drive the the fi rst ceremonial load of grain over the scales.

Dan McCutchan and his mother, Cindy McCutchan, before driving the first load of grain over the scales at Ursa Farmers Coop on Dec. 14. Family members also present were Jill and Brad Putnam and sons, Eli and Jackson.

Mark Tanner and Levi enjoyed an afternoon at the La Grange Youth Center. Guests could see Santa, enjoy refreshments and every child received a gift.
