ALPINE SKIThe 2023 World Championships in the starting blocksIn May 2018, the FIS entrusted the organisation of the 2023 Alpine Ski World Championships to Courchevel and Méribel. This flagship event will enhance the sporting image of our resort even further. Courchevel will host the world’s best skiers on Les Jockeys run, connecting la Loze (Courchevel 1850) to Courchevel Le Praz. The opening and closing ceremonies will also take place in the resort, as will the qualifiers. As for Méribel, it will host the Ladies events, the parallels and the awards ceremonies.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? A legends’ ski areaCourchevel’s ski runs are brimming with history: pioneers, visionaries, champions… A host of major names have lent their names to ski runs that have become legendary in their own right.Jean-Blanc: named after the valley’s former ski champion, nicknamed “the St-Bon locomotive”, who helped designed some of Courchevel’s ski runs in 1946. The run bearing his name opened in March 1966.Émile-Allais: named after the former Megève ski champion, France’s first ski instructor, and inventor of the French skiing technique (1937). He was Courchevel’s technical sports manager from 1954 to 1964 and it was here that he created the profession of ski patroller.Jean-Pachod: named after the valley’s first ski instructor (1932), a local from Courchevel Le Praz, he launched the first ski school in Courchevel Moriond in 1935.

A word from Perrine Pelen, appointed organisation committee director general in April 2019.“The World Championships will be an opportunity to showcase the sports DNA that’s been part of the resort for so long now. Our goal is to make people want to be a part of this incredible skiing experience and to join us in a huge celebration. This will be the skiing world’s flagship event of the next 15 years, and a chance to let Courchevel, Méribel, Savoie and France shine…”Her experience: Alpine ski World Champion (2 world medals), Olympic Vice-champion (3 olympic medals), Marketing Manager for Savoie Mont Blanc Tourisme. At her side: Jean-Philippe Demaël (boasting experience in both company and sports management), appointed organisation committee deputy director general.Keep up with all the latest news: www.courchevelmeribel2023.com

LE PRAZ SKI JUMPSAn Olympic heritageIn Courchevel Le Praz, you’ll find something very different: the Olympic ski jumps (90 metres and 120 metres) which were used in the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games. The site is rounded off by two other adjacent ski jumps: one 60 metres and the other 25 metres, on which beginners can have a go! And if you don’t feel like jumping, you can head inside the tower to find out a bit more about ski jumping with an exhibition tracing the sport’s history in the resort. Thanks to this Olympic site and its hotbed of young talent, the resort is considered one of the leading ski jumping sites in the whole world.

SPORTS CLUBA move on the horizonCourchevel Sports Club will soon be moving to a brand new 3,000 square metre building at the bottom of the slalom stadium (completion planned for 2023). It will comprise the administrative offices, a function room, sports hall, changing rooms and a car park for 20 cars. The project has largely been enabled thanks to a gift from British businessman and sports fan Jim Ratcliffe (whose daughter is a Club member), who wanted to provide it with high-tech infrastructure to welcome young skiers.

ESF French Ski SchoolA range of new developments• A Made In Courchevel uniformThe French Ski School Collection uniform was designed by instructors from the Courchevel 1850 French Ski School, for the ski school’s instructors, in collaboration with CEPOVETT, France’s leader in professional apparel: a ski school first. Worn in extreme weather conditions, these outfits needed to be adaptable so were designed to have multiple layers able to be worn on top of each other (down jacket interior, softshell outer layer…). Ultra-technical and attractive, this collection was tested and approved by ten ski instructors last winter.Bonus: to be eco-friendly, the uniforms will be recycled into ski gear accessories (rucksacks, belts…) available to purchase at the French Ski School shop.• A French Ski School office is opening in Courchevel Le PrazNow you can book your ski lessons in Courchevel Le Praz, from an office housed in the Alpinium building.• A new reception for the French Ski School’s Piou – Piou Club in Courchevel Moriond Extending over 160m2, this new area welcomes 3 to 5-year olds before their ski lessons and during breaks. With a dedicated reception, a large room for mid-morning and afternoon snacks, a ski room with boot warmers etc. embarking on an adventure with Piou-Piou couldn’t be more comfortable!

SKI TOURINGOn the riseFans of ski touring love the sport’s physical challenge, stretching their limits and enjoying a sense of freedom at the heart of nature. Courchevel has created two marked, groomed itineraries: one which is 3.2 km long over a 500-metre vertical climb, and another which is 5 km long over a 1,000 metre climb. As well as being used for competitions (like the Millet Ski Touring every Wednesday evening), these two itineraries are open to those wishing to have a go or improve their technique. Starting out from Courchevel Le Praz, one of the routes arrives at 1,850 metres and the other at the Col de la Loze mountain pass.

• Off-piste section at the Courchevel 1850 French Ski School:ESF Mountain AcademyThe opportunity for a real experience“Off-piste skiing with the ESF” with a safety workshop (avalanche beacon, probe…) for recognising the risks, getting to know the terrain, and of course enjoying a range of itineraries in Les 3 Vallées.• Competition stadiumsAt the Slalom Park (Courchevel 1850), learners can take their Flèche or Chamois qualifications, and take part in the Slalom Park Cup every Saturday. In Courchevel Moriond, the park becomes a night-time playground in the evening.

NEW GENERATIONA new concierge serviceThe New Generation ski school now offers an in-resort concierge service so you can organise all the elements of your stay in the blink of an eye: heliskiing, off- piste adventures, restaurant bookings, transfers, childcare, etc.

GUIDESEven higher! This winter, the Mountain Guides Office has 4 new products:

MOUNTAIN COACHINGSkiing and sharing tips: adapting to different snow types, managing your exertion levels, nutrition, packing your bag, learning to get your bearings, getting the best from your equipment and carrying out a rescue.SKI N’FLYA ski touring climb with a paragliding descent as your reward!SKI FITNESS NATURECombining fitness and ski touring at the heart of nature.EVEN HIGHERIn a roped party with a guide, climb an ice waterfall on a route along a wild mountain ridge.

• Guillaume Berlioux has worked with Oxygène ski school for almost 10 years and has been a supervising manager in Courchevel Valley for 3 years. With over 15 years’ experience in adapted skiing (including 6 in seated skiing), he has been able to put together a complete package. His discipline is aimed at those with limited mobility and disabilities (paraplegic, blind or partially sighted, autistic, etc.) “Why do I love adapted skiing? Because I can introduce or reintroduce the thrill of snowsports to people who didn’t think it would ever be possible.”

• Axel Fornasier is a ski instructor at the Courchevel 1850 French Ski School, as well as a professional paraglider and a proud member of the French acrobatic paragliding team. “Nothing in life thrills me more than the feeling of freedom you get from wide open spaces.”

PORTRAITSOff-piste with a guide Arthur Sordoillet, high mountain guide and member of the Courchevel Guides Office talks us through his favourite spots in Courchevel and Les 3 Vallées.

How do you choose the itinerary for the day?According to the group’s ability, snow conditions and forecast, as well as the terrain (gradient, orientation, how busy it is…). After that, we play it by ear! As an ANENA trainer (National Association for the Study of Snow and Avalanches), when I’m out, I’m always conscious of communicating with the group and giving skiers guidance so that they feel involved in the decision-making process: managing the risks and understanding the snow mantle.

What are your favourite spots in Courchevel? The Avals Valley is a must! Accessible via the ski lifts, its secret, wild, peaceful spots are great for ski touring: perfect for combining the effort of climbing with the joys of snowsports. If it hasn’t snowed recently, you can head for the Aiguille du Fruit from Chanrossa’s north-facing corridors, the powder snow there is usually really good.

And in Les 3 Vallées?Mont Vallon’s beautiful slopes in Méribel, La Gratte in Les Menuires, with the option of itineraries in the Encombres Valley or Geffriand, the majestic Gébroulaz glacier from Val Thorens… The potential for off-piste in Les 3 Vallées is incredible!

The land of gourmets• Two new restaurants are opening at Le Manali Lodge in Courchevel Moriond: the first on the ski slopes (in the same location as the previous restaurant) opens for lunch and a second inside the main building opens in the evening.Portrait idea: Chef Antony Trezy, previously Chef at Bistrot Le C, loves working with fresh, locally sourced produce, and creating vegan and gluten-free dishes. His career has seen him manage a gastronomic restaurant, working with chef Éric Frichon at The Lanesborough in London, and become partner chef at Yoann Conte’s two Michelin-starred restaurant in Annecy.• At the heart of the new Écrin Blanc hotel, Le Grill offers simple, quality cuisine made from seasonal, local produce. The dishes can be enjoyed indoors, as guests soak up the sunshine streaming through the large bay windows, or out on the terrace, where you can also choose from a pizzeria and oyster bar.Designed as a local concept store, Le Cellier describes itself as a genuine meeting place where you can try local produce in the form of elegant snacks, whilst enjoying a glass of wine. Live performances from artists three times a week. And also… the restaurant accessible from the Aquamotion swimming pools is changing its name to Le Cellier Bis. An entirely new décor and updated menu are on offer for a gourmet getaway in a sociable atmosphere with snacks to share.

Lakeside…Last winter, high mountain guide Roland and his restaurateur partner Nathalie opened the Chalet du Lac de La Rosière. With its laid-back style, warm, welcoming atmosphere and wood-fired stove, this peaceful haven in the heart of the snow-covered forest was designed as a “mountain creperie” and is the perfect place to enjoy a savoury tartiflette or raclette-style galette made from organic buckwheat flour. Platters of locally cured meat from La Dent du Villard, omelettes and winter vegetable and Beaufort soups are also available, as is Reblochon fondue enjoyed with Belledone bread soldiers. And to warm up after a lovely snowshoe session, try a delicious cup of L’Or Vert coffee roasted in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, a hot chocolate or a ‘hot white’- delicious according to Roland!Accessible by foot, on skis or snowshoes.

Sébastien VauxionThe first pastry chef to be awarded a Michelin star, Sébastien Vauxion offers a brand-new concept at K2PALACE: Le SarKara dessert restaurant. On the menu: a combination of unexpected flavours.

What are your first memories of cooking? As a child, at the back of my uncles’ bakery & cake shop, I remember the smell of strawberries, chocolate… Watching my uncle spin sugar and seeing the confectionary centrepieces really left its mark on me, as did my dad’s job as a market gardener.

What draws you to baking?I’m a real foodie! And it’s also a fantastic way to express yourself, coupled with my desire to make people happy. I’ve always loved discovering and combining different flavours (chocolate, spices, fruit…), searching out all the little aromatic notes, and bringing them together to create a sense of emotion. The only rule is that it has to taste good, or even excellent.

How do you create your menu? According to the season and the local produce in our very beautiful region. As I’m here all year, I search out black elder, cranberries, mountain caraway, rosehips… The trick is to work between seasons, so you end up with candied fruit, juices and jams. Baking allows me to combine very exotic ingredients with local produce. In one of my dishes I mix parsnip chervil ravioli with local cranberries and black cardamom: a geographical melting pot that tastes exceptional!

PORTRAIT

Where did you get the idea of creating a restaurant just for desserts?A lot of pastry chefs dream about having somewhere to express themselves without being constrained by the savoury side of things, turning the gastronomic service rules on their head. The menu includes starters (served cold, with vegetables and fruit), main courses (served hot), cheese (fromage frais with grated hard goat’s cheese) and desserts. I asked myself what would happen when we came to the end of a meal (as we’d been eating desserts the whole time), and came up with the idea of making familiar flavours: floating islands, profiteroles… The chronology works, it’s a complete meal in itself.

Your life in Courchevel…In winter, even though I’m an adrenalin junkie ski fan, I don’t get out on the slopes much, but my children really make the most of it! In spring, when the flowers bloom it’s incredible to be that close to such an amazing natural environment, it’s really inspiring. I did some training with a herbalist so I could recognise mushrooms, herbs, lichen… I try to take the whole family when I go picking, the children love it.

STARS IN THEIR EYES…7 of Courchevel’s restaurants currently hold Michelin stars, the highest concentration in the mountains. Prepare to have your taste buds tantalized.• LE 1947***Cheval Blanc Courchevel 5-starPALACE

Après-ski… Artists on the slopes

A great “arty” ideaThroughout the winter, several of the resort’s hotels and restaurants put on exhibitions of local and non-local art. It’s an opportunity to make some wonderfully unexpected discoveries over the course of a night or meal out, or an overnight stay.

Art flowArt is everywhere in Courchevel, especially in the resort’s numerous prestigious galleries. As an example, at Galerie Frédéric Got, photographer David Yarrow’s evocative and immersive approach to life on Earth will be exhibited between the 21st of December and the 4th of January. Over at Galerie 337, you can admire paintings by Daniel Castan, Jerlef, Grangil and horned animal sculptures by Ge Pellini.Galerie Saint-Martin focuses on contemporary art, neo pop-art and street art, featuring renowned artists such as Laurence Jenkell, Erro, C215, David Cintract, Peter Klasen, etc.In their gallery, Galerie MC Grulier which has been open 23 years, Marie-Christine and her daughter Johanna seek to promote contemporary art by exhibiting established international artists and newcomers to the art world.Galeries Bartoux, which also organises the Art at the Summit exhibition, shows contemporary artists and sculptors, as well as great artists from the 20th century to the modern day. Finally, the best-selling French artist in the world who regularly exhibits at the resort’s summits also has his own self-titled gallery: Richard Orlinski where he exhibits his magical, colourful menagerie.

Art (still) at the summitEvery year, the resort transforms into a genuine open-air museum. This winter, for the 11th edition of Art at the Summit, one artist is in the seat of honour: Bruno Catalano. Famous for his “Travellers” bronzes of men with missing sections holding suitcases, the artist is exhibiting several sculptures in the resort centre and one on the ski area, at top of La Vizelle.

«Montagne Propre» (Clean Mountain)Every year in June, the “Man of the day - Montagne Propre” association organises a litter picking day. Equipped with gloves and bin bags, tens of volunteers set about cleaning up the resort slopes.

Going greenAs part of its work running the ski area, S3V has implemented measures to preserve the environment for several years. Here are a few specific examples:• The installation of winter protection zones for black grouse.• Using local seeds and grasses during building work on the ski runs (e.g. in Ariondaz).• Using energy emitted by electricity cabinets to heat staff chalets.• Updating the artificial snowmakers so that they produce more snow using fewer resources (water and electricity).• Installing solar panels on gondola lifts (Les Grangettes).

HOTELS ARE PLAYING THEIR PARTA word from Bilal Amrani, chef at La Sivolière 5-star hotel«“Le 1850 Be Organic” is La Sivolière’s gastronomic, organic and ethically sourced restaurant. As the chef there, I now offer food that is made from 100% organic or wild ingredients. I’ve selected producers who use environmentally friendly practices and suppliers who are part of the “better consumption” campaign. Our clients appreciate our commitment to healthier produce that’s good for their health and for the planet!»

COURCHEVEL HOTELThe 5-star L’Apogée Courchevel hotel has been awarded Green Globe certification. For 6 years, the hotel has been committed to a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approach which involves both employees and guests. For example, “Giving Bags” are available in bedrooms through which guests can donate clothing to local organisations. The hotel also sponsors the Vanoise National Park, supporting the protection of the Alpine Ibex: a soft ibex toy is available for clients to ‘adopt’, with proceeds going to the Park.

eNational charter for sustainable developmentIn 2007, Courchevel joined the national charter for sustainable development in mountain resorts. The membership conveys the resort’s strong commitment to sustainable tourism, in other words, tourism that is sustainable in the long term, ecologically and economically, as well as being ethically and socially fair, especially for local inhabitants.

What is the charter’s action plan?• To promote sustainable development in the region.• To develop a sustainable habitat policy respecting architectural heritage.• To preserve landscapes and natural spaces.• To promote balanced resource management: public lighting (installing a street light system that reduces energy usage by half), water management (waste water treatment carried out by a modern filtration system employing bio-filtration).• Privileging high-performance, environmentally friendly modes of transport (free shuttlebuses, making ski lifts free at certain times, promoting car sharing).• Developing tourist activity that blends well into the natural landscape and is run in an environmentally friendly way. • Educating the resort’s various users to encourage them to adopt eco-friendly behaviour (‘giveboxes’, 200 recycling collection points, the installation of Tree6clope ashtrays to collect and recycle cigarette butts).

EnvironmentProtection Project

Green attitudeLe Flocon Vert, or Green Snowflake, is a label that guarantees sustainable development in mountain tourism destinations. This label was developed by the Mountain Riders association to promote exemplary tourist destinations to mountain holidaymakers. In 2018, Courchevel joined the “Flocon Vert” scheme to ramp up and promote the steps that the region is taking to support sustainable development. And the Station Verte or Green Resort label? This ecotourism label, awarded to Courchevel in 2017, recognises and categorises towns labelled as ‘nature’, ‘authentic’, ‘environmentally friendly’ destinations committed to preserving the region’s natural and cultural heritage and its inhabitants’ well-being.
