PRESIDENTS REPORT – OCTOBER 2016

Another National Rally is over but conducted under what can only be described as difficult circumstances. But none the less successful. Our 5-day trip to Canberra, with the Explorers, was plagued by rain, cold weather, and some flooding.

The weather during the Rally was cold and damp, particularly for we Queenslanders, with the temperature rarely rising above 14 degrees. My heartfelt thanks to the organisers for an enjoyable time in their fair city, Canberra, where there is so much to see and do. In all 604 Member Vans attended with Qld showing the largest number being 219 vans, including 4 from Townsville

As was expected, a number of meetings occurred under the auspices of the NACC. Chief amongst these was a presentation by Rin Klasen, Secretary of the NACC, regarding the “Benefits Card”. and a presentation by Con Tsobanopoulos, CEO of Ken Tame Insurance, now a wholly owned subsidiary off Allianz Insurance.

The CCQ Committee urges all Clubs and their Members to take advantage of the “Benefits Card”. Only numbers will guarantee the success of this venture. I am aware of the reticence by some clubs to be involved due to a concern regarding privacy issues. There are no privacy issues. In fact as a caravanner we provide more information to a Caravan Park when registering than is required for the benefits card. Your Club Secretary controls the information provided and all the NACC requires is a name and the Club.

Over recent weeks we (the committee) have been exploring the issues regarding Roadside Service. We have been made aware of certain short comings in the RACQ offer. Discussions with the RACQ are ongoing and a recommendation will be made in due course.

Changes in the Motor Vehicle Insurance Industry are impacting on road assistance as a free service now provided by some insurers. Ken Tame is one such Insurer. I have requested documentation from “Ken Tame” supporting this step which will be discussed by the CCQ Committee for distribution to you our members. A comparison of offers will be provided.

The arrangements for the 2017 State Rally are progressing with meetings occurring in Goondiwindi on the 11th and 12th October involving all stake holders from both Council and the Show Society. Watch this space.

A meeting was held with representatives from The North Qld Club regarding the 2018 State Rally. It is pleasing to note that the majority of members of the Club are keen to sponsor the Rally including their Club Executive. We expect confirmation in the near future.

Safe and Happy Caravanning to all.

My desk is mobile at the moment, writing this report as we huddle in the van out of the strong, cold winds at Jindabyne – our first stop after leaving Canberra at the end of the National Rally.

Speaking of which, I always believe that catching up with caravan club members from other clubs and renewing friendships made at past National Rallies is what these rallies are all about and the recent Canberra National Rally was no exception. It was great to put a face to members I have corresponded with by email and to catch up with others.

I believe the final tally for the Rally was 604 vans in attendance and the organisers are to be congratulated and thanked for all the hard work put into the Rally. The weather was unkind at times and that can’t be helped but overall it was once again an enjoyable rally.

Time now to start planning for the next National Rally in Albany, West Australia.

16th NATIONAL CARAVAN RALLY REPORT

The 16th National Caravan Rally at Canberra didn’t have an auspicious start with heavy rain in the days preceding the rally leaving parts of EPIC quite wet. However on Monday morning the 19th Old Well Station Road was over-whelmed with caravans with their owners eager to find a site suitable for their needs for the duration of the rally. Once the members were settled the matter of registration was an easy process with Canberra Club members stationed at registration desks in the EPIC Con-ference Centre.

The rally opening ceremony was held on Monday evening Budawang Building. Nigel Collyer was the emcee for the rally and he welcomed the Official Party to the stage. The official party comprised: Ian Sharp - President of the Canberra

Caravan Club & Gail Berthold Peter Hillas - Chairman of the National

Association of Caravan Clubs & Robyn Hillas

Wally Bell - Elder of the Ngunnawal Country

Mick Gentleman - ACT MLA Ray Swift - Chairman 16th National Cara-

van Rally Committee & Lyn Swift Amal Davis - EPIC Value Manager

The Official Ceremony commenced with a poem by Phil Bruce about the development of Canberra from the perspective of the land on which the capital was built. This was then followed by a traditional welcome by Wally Bell on behalf of the Ngunnawal Country the land on which the rally was being held. Ian Sharp welcomed caravanners on behalf of the Canberra Caravan Club. Mick Gentleman MLA proclaimed the rally officially open. A Wine & Cheese supper followed the Official Opening with the opportunity to catch up with friends at a Meet & Greet.

The day-time activities during the following days at the rally included; Daily seminars, technology classes Exhibitions - vintage caravan display,

trade exhibitions & sales Saturday farmers’ market and rally

members market Tours Craft Sporting activities - disc bowls, golf, lawn

bowls, tennis, walking, tai-chi, cycling, croquet

Mini downhill drag racing Dancing - square dancing Ukulele jam sessions Book club Evening entertainment

Each of the following days was taken up with a variety of seminars, tours, craft, Old Time Tea dances each afternoon and sporting events to keep everyone occupied during the day. The rally organisers had provided a different genre of music entertainment each evening. The line-up comprised music from popular music to bush ballads, jazz & blues, musical satire, Gilbert & Sullivan, John Williamson, rock & roll and big band.

With so many other National Iconic venues to visit as well the days were well and truly fully occupied and of course the Floriade event was also well patronised. There were some down sides to the rally with rain and cold taking some of the gloss from the event. Saturday was market day. A Farmers’ Market was held in the public area and the rally market was held in the Coorong Building in conjunction with the Rally Exhibitors.

The disc bowls competition was played indoors on carpet because of the inclement weather. This no doubt added a different dimension for those players who hadn’t previously played disc bowls on carpet particularly in control of the jack.

Tuesday saw the beginning of the tour program by Hire a Guide tour company. They provided several unique tour destinations of the region throughout the rally. These tours were very well patronised and the destinations included: Nooks and Crannies of the Parliamentary

Zone; This was a walking tour hosted by an experienced guide that took in several of the iconic buildings such as the National Library of Australia, High Court, National Gallery, and hidden treasures of National gallery Sculpture garden.

Floriade - the splendour and insights of this annual flower and entertainment festival.

Snowy Mountains Extravaganza; a full day tour of the Alpine country and the Snowy Mountain Hydro Electric Scheme.

The Australian Capital Territory South West Loop; a full day tour that took in Mount Stromlo Observatory, Cotter Dam, Tidbinbilla Deep Space Communications Complex, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and the historic Lanyon Homestead.

Winery Tours; These tours took in the Murrumbateman Winery and the Vines & Wines tour that provided tours of several wineries.

The Closing Ceremony was held on Tuesday evening. During the ceremony a cheque for $8000.00 was presented to representatives of RFDS and Snowy Hydro South Care. The Official Closure was performed by Peter Hillas, Chairman of the NACC. The Canberra Brass Band then completed the entertainment for the rally.
