It looks like it will be the best year we have seen in the last twenty years for the native wildflowers of the area. The orchids are having a great year, the early species have nearly finished like the greenhoods but over the next few weeks the spiders will be coming out and it should be spectacular. If you get the chance, get into the forests around Central Victoria. Last month we had an excellent demonstration and workshop with Diederik. Diederik’s message was to not get caught out trying to create a tree to soon and to develop the trunk before worrying about branching. We were all given an opportunity to study a maple tree, from Diederik’s nursery which have been developed over eight years, and look for the new leader. It was daunting for some of us in making that big decision. Where to cut? Our thanks always to Diederik for his willingness to let us novices work on his trees. There is no better way to learn than to be forced to make the decisions that will shape the future of a tree. We also said goodbye for now, to our longtime member and friend Tom. Tom is in the last throws of his move to the Geelong area. Hopefully Tom will be able to make it back to visit us on occasion, but for now we wish him the very best in his move. Geelong Bonsai Club will be benefiting from his vast horticultural, pottery and bonsai knowledge. This month as always, due to the unavailability of the hall, will be our annual visit to one of our members homes to see their collections and enjoy a relaxing time together. David and Trish have invited the members to visit their home in Monegeetta. Glenn has put the details together so please turns to page four for the itinerary. Unfortu- nately the Showell’s won’t be able to join you but I’m sure you’ll have a great day out. That’s enough from me, I hope you are all well and have an enjoyable day out on Sunday. Presidents Notes

Hello Members, What a soggy start to Spring we are having, we’ve had nearly 5 inches of rain and counting in Castlemaine. It looks

like it will be the best year we have seen in the last twenty years for the native wildflowers of the area. The orchids

are having a great year, the early species have nearly finished like the greenhoods but over the next few weeks the

spiders will be coming out and it should be spectacular. If you get the chance, get into the forests around Central

Victoria.

Last month we had an excellent demonstration and workshop with Diederik. Diederik’s message was to not get

caught out trying to create a tree to soon and to develop the trunk before worrying about branching. We were all

given an opportunity to study a maple tree, from Diederik’s nursery which have been developed over eight years,

and look for the new leader. It was daunting for some of us in making that big decision. Where to cut? Our thanks

always to Diederik for his willingness to let us novices work on his trees. There is no better way to learn than to be

forced to make the decisions that will shape the future of a tree.

We also said goodbye for now, to our longtime member and friend Tom. Tom is in the last throws of his move to

the Geelong area. Hopefully Tom will be able to make it back to visit us on occasion, but for now we wish him

the very best in his move. Geelong Bonsai Club will be benefiting from his vast horticultural, pottery and bonsai

knowledge.

This month as always, due to the unavailability of the hall, will be our annual visit to one of our members homes

to see their collections and enjoy a relaxing time together. David and Trish have invited the members to visit their

home in Monegeetta. Glenn has put the details together so please turns to page four for the itinerary. Unfortu-

nately the Showell’s won’t be able to join you but I’m sure you’ll have a great day out.

That’s enough from me, I hope you are all well and have an enjoyable day out on Sunday. Paul

August Meeting August Meeting. Maple Trunk Selection Workshop with Diederik.

Sunday's meeting was a standout. Diederik had everyone thinking outside the box and consolidating an artis-

tic process so significant in the development of a Bonsai, "the Trunk".

Diederik brought along some impressive examples to demonstrate what thoughtful selection and patience can

create. The workshop included selecting a Maple or two from a large selection of 8 year old clip and grow ma-

ples. Each tree had a well established trunk with numerous branches including any number of possibilities as a

new leader. It took a little time but with some coaxing everyone was soon picking and choosing, cutting and

clipping and ultimately looking at a trunk of their making. Well done to all for keeping the faith, each month

sees us moving forward and building on our skills while keeping things low key and so very enjoyable

Many thanks to Diederik for once again providing another excellent

workshop, we are so very fortunate to have such a masterful demon-

strator in our small yet highly enthusiastic group.

Regards Glenn. Thanks Alli and Ron for the extra photos.

FAREWELL and BEST WISHES TOM.

Last month at our August meeting we farewelled one of our original

and most dedicated members. Tom Cockram is a Bonsai enthusiast of

some 60 years. He has given freely of his knowledge and time and has

donated many trees and pots along with an extraordinary selection of

books and magazines. Tom has a unique way of doing things, it is al-

ways intended to assist, instruct and to pass on a wealth of knowledge

that all have benefited from. Tom is moving close to family in Gee-

long, he will obviously continue to work with Bonsai and will reinvig-

orate his love of Pottery. Tom will keep in touch and be back from time

to time but basing himself with Geelong Bonsai. Tom, we are excited

for You and wish You all the very best for the future. We Thankyou for

all Your efforts over the years.

Regards, Paul, Glenn, David and All at GBS.
