April 2016 Page 1 Volume 30-4 A Monthly Newsletter Published by the RoadRunner Prospector’s Club April 2016 April 2016 The Spring Picnic is this month on April 23 rd , the Saturday immediately after the General Meeting. There is an article in this newsletter devoted to it and I urge you to be in attendance. As it is a “potluck”, bring a dish that can be shared. There will be electric generators for crock-pots and the like. Be sure and bring your RRPC name badge for the gold drawing. I hope to see you there. In March we had the first dig of the year. As most of you know we are going to have four digs a year. They are more work than you would think for the Board; no not the digging of the holes; that is done by a backhoe, but all the preparatory and paperwork with the filings is performed by Board members with other members as- sisting. All of that takes time. Considering the turnout at the March dig (we had perfect weather), and considering the turnout that I witnessed at prior digs, in my view, they are the best type of prospecting outing for a club. This is not to take an- ything away from the Spring Picnic, because the picnic is a fun outing. However, the feedback that I have heard from members is that the “digs” are well received so we are ramping up the number. If you find gold, please let the Board know be- cause we can always schedule another dig on the same claim. It is not as though you are giving away a secret location by advising the Board of your good luck at a dig; we all know about it. We cannot schedule digs on many of the claims because they all are not easily reached by a high clearance pick-up nor is there sufficient parking for many vehicles. For those members that have not yet paid their dues, please do so. Do not let your membership lapse. Also, the warm weather is fast approaching. Be aware of possible fire warnings, stay hydrated and watch out for ‘buz-tails’. Make it a good month and be safe out there. Frederick Horn, President Presidents Corner

RRPC at 2016 Phoenix Gold Show

Life member, Al Ordorica, orchestrated a vendor booth for our club at the annual GPAA Gold and Treasure Show at the Arizona State Fairgrounds on the weekend of March 12th and 13th. Plans were set in motion to man the booth for the entire show and what to bring. Several Wednesdays at the club office were dedicated to booth presentation, membership packets, show “freebees”, visual aids, video presentation, and Club attractions. Set-up was Friday, 3/11 and the booth was looking really sharp! Saturday morning of the big day, the public hit the doors and we were immediately busy answering questions about our Club and signing up new members! The show was great fun and a huge success for our club. The Board is planning to be a part of this terrific event next year. It is a pleasure to see and meet so many “fellow pro-spectors” and be a part of keeping modern-day prospecting alive in Arizona. A huge thank you to the following members for their help: Al Ordorica, Mike Slater, George Kneckt, Karl and Fay Weber, Pete Baker, George DeHaven, and Reeve Kahabka for making it happen!

March Dig on the Carrie #2 Our backhoe dig on Saturday March 19th outing on Carrie 2 was a great event for all partici-pating members. This club-sponsored event will take place four times a year and is for all member age groups from young supervised kids to seasoned senior members. We safely dug enough good sized pits and a trench to provide ample ground for all to show their skills in the art of the hunt for gold. Please plan to join us for our next dig event which is tentatively sched-uled on September 17th. The location of the next dig will be announced at a later date. Fun will be had by all and with some luck, all will find some gold.

Gold Fever Turkey Creek RRPC Map 8

Some of the most used club claims lie on Turkey Creek off the old Senator Highway. This is near the Goodwin marker which is all that is left of the old mining town founded in 1863. This area was named after John Goodwin, the first territorial President of Arizona who was appoint-ed by Abraham Lincoln. Turkey Creek is rich with gold mining history and is still a good pro-ducer of gold today. Map 8 contains 15 claims, some of them were previously owned by our members. The large Ponderosa Forest offers a cool relief from the Phoenix valley. The creek provides seasonal water flow which affords the opportunity to prospect with dredges, re-circulating sluices, high bankers, and of course panning! Be careful here, as most of the land is “claimed-up” and it’s easy to stray off of our claims.

The Patriot Claims are closed to motorized access and you need to park and walk to the claims. There is an old cabin (private property) where you leave your vehicle behind on the approach-ing road. The Patriot Claims are closed to all prospecting January 1st thru April 15th ever year by the forest service.

Several of the prospecting stores recommend Turkey Creek for finding gold, including A&B Prospecting. Remember to take your plan of operations since this is in the Prescott National

Forest. This is a great spot for camping and staying awhile!

Cautions and warnings: Wear your badge Take lots of drinking water Claims near other claims...be mindful and respect others Leave a prospecting plan at home so others know where you are Leave no holes! Have fun and find GOLD! If you would like to comment or contribute to Gold Fever articles please contact me at [email protected] Next article will profile Map 8—Turkey Creek. Bob Hood
