“The purpose of art is washing the dust of
daily life off our souls” - Pablo Picasso
This is a first for me, having completed my newsletter message only to
discover that it had no relevance to our current circumstance. What value
is there in informing you, the reader, of classes and events scheduled
which are then summarily cancelled?
The abrupt cessation of all programming of the Guild came with lightning
rapidity once the Board had voted to do so. The morning of Friday the
13th, I sent out a proposal to the Board, and by Friday evening it had been
accomplished. Notice was sent by every contrivance to members and class
participants, with only a few escaping our net. We had at least one Guild member show up for
the Monday workshop, along with the instructor. In each instance, efforts had been made to
contact each. Shari, the church contact person, was also not notified until Monday of our
decision to close.
The progress of the virus will dictate when we will be able to resume, but it is safe to say that it
will not be for a month or two at best. At present I am using the time to paint, an activity that I
have had little opportunity for recently. I find with no other responsibilities or distractions, the
time flies by and I feel productive. It makes the Picasso quote above more meaningful to me,
particularly if I equate dust to virus.
I have received nothing but positive feedback on the decision to curtail activity, except for
concern of how members will miss the community and support of the group. We are working
on activities that will allow us to maintain contact and involvement without venturing out,
thereby placing each other at risk.
Please be safe. The glorious spring weather and rebirth of nature reminds us that there is
always renewal following a period of winter. Be steadfast and healthy.
Yours in art,
Paul

If you are looking for class information for the next two months, which is normally included in our Newsletters, here’s the explanation that you may have missed’:
Dear Members and Friends of the Portland Fine Arts Guild,
After much deliberation and discussion, in the interest of everyone's health and
peace of mind, the Board of the Portland Fine Arts Guild sadly takes action to
cancel all current programs, effective immediately. We want all members,
friends, and their families to be safe from the COVID-19 virus. We look forward
to resuming workshops, classes and activities as soon as reasonably possible. If
you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me personally.
