I hope that you found time to relax over the winter break and are now ready to resume the important work of helping students learn. As I write this, anniversaries are on my mind. January 11 marks the anniversary of the day I became president of Cypress College seven years ago. Since the average tenure for college presidents is something like four years, being here for seven is some- what noteworthy. In fact, of the nine community colleges in Orange County, I am the most “senior” president. (I refuse to say that I’m the “oldest,” but that may be true as well.) Together we have accomplished a great deal in these seven years. We have revamped curriculum and teaching methodologies; we have hired nearly 80 new faculty members; we have hosted two accrediting team visits; we have developed two strategic plans; we have survived a serious budget crisis; we have embraced technology in instruction and in our everyday work lives; we have embarked on a major facilities improvement plan that is transforming the campus; and, most impor- tantly, we have changed the lives of thousands of students by helping them make their dreams of educational achievement come true. We have continued the Cypress College tradition of collegial rela- tionships and a cooperative, “can do” spirit that has helped us through the very difficult times that we have faced. We are known as a friendly campus where people go out of their way to help students and col- leagues alike. We are also known as a place that likes to celebrate and have fun, a fact that leads me to thoughts of another anniversary—the college’s fortieth—which we are celebrating in 2006. The college opened its doors on September 12, 1966, after having been “constructed” in just 74 days. Over the next few years buildings were completed, faculty and staff were hired, programs were devel- oped—the college grew to become one of California’s comprehensive community colleges. Now, here we are 40 years later, and it’s time to celebrate our founding. Throughout this year there will be various celebrations as different departments plan events, but the big event will be the campus-wide open house scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, October 21. We will invite back former students and retirees so that we can show them the changes the campus is undergoing and so that we all can share memories that make up the history of Cypress College. I encourage everyone to mark their calendars now and plan to be part of the anniversary celebration on October 21. Have a wonderful spring semester! In fact, of the nine community colleges in Orange County, I am the most “senior” president. (I refuse to say that I’m the “oldest,” but that may be true as well.)

Together we have accomplished a great deal in these seven years. We have revamped curriculum and teaching methodologies; we have hired nearly 80 new faculty members; we have hosted two accrediting team visits; we have developed two strategic plans; we have survived a serious budget crisis; we have embraced technology in instruction and in our everyday work lives; we have embarked on a major facilities improvement plan that is transforming the campus; and, most impor-tantly, we have changed the lives of thousands of students by helping them make their dreams of educational achievement come true.

➤40th Anniversary:It’s hard to believe, but the 40th anniversary of Cypress College is

upon us. Dubbed an instant campus because instruction began just 74 days after construction started, the first classes wer offered on September 12, 1966. Various events throughout 2006 will mark the anniversary. However, a campus-wide open house is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, October 21.

Former students and retirees will be invited to return to campus to participate in the event. The open house is an opportunity to show off the changes the campus is undergoing and so that we all can share memories that make up the history of Cypress College.

Please mark your calendars now and plan to be part of the anniver-sary celebration on October 21.

Additional information will be available throughout the semester.

➤Budget:Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled his budget proposal this

week — the first look seems pretty encouraging for community colleges and the students we serve.

Specific details aren’t yet available for the District and the campus; they will be shared in a future edition of @Cypress.

A report on Cypress College’s

Construction Projects

➤Construction:Library/Learning Resource Center — The opening date of the

new 62,500-square-foot L/LRC is approaching. As of now, everything is on schedule for the two-story building to open on January 30. On the exterior, site work such as landscaping and concrete are 95% complete. The outdoor lighting is done.

On the inside, crews are working double shifts, installing furniture. The first floor is nearly complete, and the bookstacks are done on the second floor. Counters, millwork and other furniture are making their way into the college’s first new building since 1976.

The first floor will house the Learning Center while the Library collections and resources will be on the second floor.

Elevators — The elevator on the front of the Cypress College Complex (formerly the Library/Administration Building) is complete and it has passed inspection. Work is progressing well on the elevator being installed between Gym 2 and Tech Ed II. More time, however, is needed on the other two elevators — for Business and Tech Ed I — because of underground issues such as telecommunications infra-structure.

Central Plant — This project will be closed out next week. Final testing is underway, and the pathways around the building are open.

Lot 1 — Work has begun for the truck-loading dock for the future Student Center. Re-striping of parking spaces and s new exit will be done before classes begin.

M&O — The crane should arrive this week to put the walls up, so we will start to see a building spring up in Lot 6. It is scheduled to open this summer.

Remodel for Efficiency — Three buildings are being bid as a package: Tech Ed I, Business and the third and fourth floors of the Cypress College Complex.

Student Center — Bids will be opened on January 24.Complex — Moves are scheduled for February 10 (the first floor)

and February 24 (the second floor). Financial Aid and DSPS are on the first floor. EOPS and deans offices for Counseling and Student Support Services on the second floor.

Piazza Renovation — A major renovation of the piazza has begun. The work is taking place between Fine Arts and the Complex. It involves completely removing the cement and brick topping and the barrier layers, as well as the installation of metal railings.

Spring Publication Dates for @Cypress

This is the semester’s first edi-tion of @Cypress.

In all, 17 publications for @Cypress during the Spring 2006 semester will be produced.

The weekly newsletter from Dr. Lewis is distributed each Friday during the semester, excluding a hiatus on April 14 for Spring break. The February 17 edition will appear a day early due to President’s Day.

Here are the remaining publica-tion dates: January 20, 27; February 3, 10, 16, 24; March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; April 7, 21, 28; May 5 and 12.

Please submit any news items to be published to the Public Information Office at ext. 47006, or via e-mail to [email protected].

In addition to being sent to all campus e-mail accounts, this publi-cation is also available on the Web site. E-mail subscriptions are also offered to any interested commu-nity members.

According to the Community College League of California’s analysis of the pro-posal, the governor’s budget would increase per-student funding by $383, a 7.7% hike.

Other important points include:• Student fees remain at $26. Over the

last three years, fees have increased 131%;• A cost-of-living adjustment of 5.18%

is proposed;• Equalization funds totalling

$130,000,000 are recommended. Equalization is an important concern in the District since the NOCCCD receives less money per student from the state than many other districts in the state;

• $148,800,000, or 3%, funding was proposed for enrollment growth.

The Governor and lawmakers will now begin to negotiate the details of the budget proposal.

➤Swap Meet:The college’s new swap meet vendor

just completed a successful first weekend on campus. California Open Air Markets is the new vendor selected by the Board late last year. The last day under the old vendor was December 31, and the swap meet was closed on January 1.

Already, some significant changes have been noticed. California Open Air Markets had a staff member in every parking lot to better control parking. Their staff was in radio contact with each other, sharing infor-mation such as knowing how many spaces remained available in each lot.

The swap meet staff also had cross-ing guards to better handle traffic on circle drive.

While it was a good first effort (and a dramatic increase in support to the cam-pus compared to the previous vendor), California Open Air Markets isn’t yet satis-fied with the changes.

They are looking at two sites for poten-tial additional parking for vendors (and, per-haps, overflow for shoppers) with a shuttle

service as a long term goal.Their efforts thus far have relieved a

burden on our security to a great degree. The contract with the new vendor is

expected to roughly double the swap meet revenue that the college has earned in recent years.

➤Americana:The 31st Annual Americana Awards,

sponsored by Bowman Real Estate, take place on Saturday, February 25, 2006 at the Disneyland Hotel Grand Ballroom.

The Americana Awards honor citizens of the year from the eight cities that form Cypress College’s primary service area. In addition, Americana salutes a person of the year and a distinguished business or com-munity partner.

This year’s recipients are:Irv Pickler — Man of the Year Tiger Woods Foundation and Learning Center — Distinguished Community Partner Reverend Ralph Juengel — President’s Distinguished Service AwardCitizens of the Year:Shirley McCracken — AnaheimEllyn Clark — Buena ParkChris and Tammy Sherrin — CypressRuth Smith — Garden GroveUlla Herman — La Palma Michael R. McCrary — Los Alamitos/RossmoorChuck Feenstra — Seal BeachDave and Debbie Morse — StantonEmployees can purchase tickets for

themselves and a guest to Americana for the discounted rate of $150. Tickets are normal-ly $200 per person, $2,000 per table, and $3,000 for a founder’s table. A variety of sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Pickler is the father of Baseball Coach Scott Pickler and Softball Coach Brad Pickler. He is also a long-time member of the Foundation Board.

The event’s Title Sponsor — Bowman

Real Estate — is headed by Walter Bowman, an alumnus who also serves on the Foundation Board.

For more information, contact the Foundation at ext. 47126 or visit http://www.CypressCollege.edu/foundation.

➤Scholarships Apps:Scholarship applications are cur-

rently available for download from the main page of the college Web site at http://www.CypressCollege.edu. The application can be completed and submitted entirely online.

Throughout the 2004-2005 school year, a total exceeding $150,000 was given to students to assist them in furthering their education.

➤Senior Day:The college’s annual Senior Day has

been set for March 23.In recent years, the event has been

transformed to include booths from campus programs, divisions and student services. A series of workshops has also been added to the half-day event.

Traditionally, some 800-1,200 students from area high schools have visited the cam-pus to have a look and to explore our many educational programs.

The workshops include: “Choosing a College Major” — presented by Sharon Easton; “Smooth Transitions to Transfer” — presented by Stacey Howard; and “Getting Free Money to Fund Your College Education” — presented by Alan Reza and Lizzy Maicas.

Each of the workshops will be held in the new Student Activities Center, which opened last semester.

This is the first year that visiting stu-dents will be able to enjoy the new con-struction, since both the Cypress College Complex and the Library/Learning Resource Center will be open, in addition to the Student Activities Center.

Donna Friess Appointed by Governor to Victim Advisory CouncilGovernor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently

appointed Donna L. Friess, a faculty member in the Speech Department, to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Victim Advisory Council.

The council meets twice a year and has the job of developing victim services and departmental policies and practices that are victim sensitive.

“I am honored to be appointed,” she said.As the California Co-chairman for Force 100, a

grassroots group with a goal of getting a constitutional amendment passed for victim’s rights.

The group’s ardent effort was realized and acknowledged on April 22, 2004 when the U.S. Senate voted 96-1 to pass a federal statute advocating rights for crime victims.

The statute establishes rights for victim’s families to notice and participate at every critical stage of the criminal investigation. It also provides legal clinics and lawyers in states enforcing their own individual laws.

The proposed bill also calls for resources for the enforcement of these rights and remedies and a report-ing mechanism to track the effectiveness of these new laws.

District to Begin Transition to nocccd.edu from nocccd.cc.ca.usThe District’s Internet domain name will be

changed from @nocccd.cc.ca.us to @nocccd.edu effec-tive February 6. This means that all of the e-mail addresses for District staff at the Anaheim Campus will start using the domain of @nocccd.edu.

This change will not affect School of Continuing Education staff located at the Anaheim Campus.

At the same time, the District Web site address will change from www.nocccd.cc.ca.us to www.nocccd.edu.

The change essentially means that when send-

ing e-mail to staff who had an e-mail address that ended in “nocccd.cc.ca.us,” you will need to start using the ending “nocccd.edu” instead. Example: [email protected] will become [email protected].

While this change will take effect on February 6, e-mail sent to old addresses and visits to the old Web address will continue to function for at least six months.

There will be no changes to Banner or WebStar at this time.

Hats off to the staff in Academic Computing and Maintenance & Operations.

Both groups are experienc-ing a heavy load with all the work that goes into moves and the opening buildings.

For example, Paul Hamblin and Ismat Kahlon are working all weekend from January 27-29 to install the new computer work stations for students and staff in the Library/Learning Resource Center.

“It’s an incredible staff that we have,” Nancy Byrnes said of the employees in Academic Computing and M&O. “The Maintenance and Operations staff has been amazing in what they do. They’re involved in every one of the moves, both permanent and temporary.”

The women’s basket-ball team needed a 13-point run in the second half to down Golden West 84-51 on Wednesday. Freshman guard Marinna Figueroa came off the bench to score a career-high 7 points.

Freshman guard Brae Butler led all scorers with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman forward Sheila Ho-Ching ended the night with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Ana Fakatou, Brandi Thomas, and Stephanie Lewis all contrib-uted with 8 points each.

T-TEN Program One of Six Recipients of Inaugural Toyota AwardCypress College’s Toyota T-TEN program has been selected as one of six recipients of the inaugural T-TEN

School Recognition Award,The School Recognition Program is being established to recognize Toyota’s highest-performing T-TEN schools

across the country.“Your program has earned this recognition through its excellent implementation of our T-TEN training

model,” Roger Foss, national field support manager, wrote to Dr. Lewis. “The operation of a high-performing T-TEN program requires the adherence to many guidelines and policies.”

Schools were judged on graduate objectives, placements at Toyota dealerships, the maintenance of instructor and program certifications, and compliance with Toyota training requirements.

“This award is being given in recognition of your program’s outstanding work in these areas,” Foss said. “ I would like to thank you for your support of our T-TEN program and for being a leader in workforce

development initiatives within your community. Throughout the country, Toyota and Lexus dealers are in need of qualified automotive service technicians. Thank you for helping us to achieve the goal of filling this need.”

Toyota Motor Sales, USA, has been a strong supporter of Cypress College over the years. The company com-pleted a three-year, title sponsorship agreement of the Foundation’s Americana Awards last February.

In addition, the college’s T-TEN program has been ranked annually as one of the most successful educational enterprises as measured by success statistics.
