VP Technical Report By John Fischer Jr.

CHAPTER MEMBERS

This month our presenter will be Jim Walls who is with the Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute. His presentation will be ASTM and CISPI Specifications and Installation Requirements for Cast Iron Soil Pipe. Sometimes as new products and materials come into the market we overlook the historical products we have always used and need a refresher about why those products were so successful and are still viable. Jim has a long tenure in the plumbing industry. Unfortunately the presentation by Scott Blackmore from Blackmore and Glunt, Inc., on new technologies in two parts: “Why modulation does improve efficiency in water heating” (part 1) and an “Introduction to ECM pumps in plumbing systems” (part 2); was cut short by power point system malfunction. Because of the interest shown Scott has indicated he will return at a future meeting to try again to make the presentation. Suggestions for meeting presentations this year and next would be very much appreciated.. Continuing education certificates will be available for this meeting and several certificates remain for other months that were not previously retrieved. See you at the March meeting.

D.O.E Announces New Energy Efficiency Standards for Plumbing Equipment The final standards for commercial pre-rinse spray valves set the maximum flow rate for these fittings at 1-1.28gpm depending on class. The final standard for residential boilers prohibit constant burning pilots and require an automatic means of adjusting temperature. User Guide to Green Building Standard is Now Available ASHRAE has published an updated user’s manual to ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES 189.1: Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings except Low-Rise Residential Buildings to help engi-neers understand the changes in the 2014 edition of the standard. Among the many changes in the 2014 edition of Standard 189.1 that are addressed in the User’s Manual are:

Change of all site requirements to mandatory, with the previous prescriptive and performance op-tions moved to the mandatory requirements.

Addition of minimum storm water management requirements for minimizing the impact of storm water discharge from the project site.

Inclusion of new requirements for bicycle parking; preferred park for low-emission, hybrid and electric vehicles; and a predesign assessment of native and invasive plants.

Adjustment of minimum on-site renewable energy requirements to provide two clear prescriptive paths for including on-site renewable energy in a project.

Establishment of two performance options for demonstrating compliance with the minimum en-ergy efficiency requirements.

Addition of lighting quality to the scope of the indoor environmental quality section as well as requirements for lighting controls in specific space types.

Clarification of the requirements for air sealing of filtration and air-cleaning equipment; and new requirements for preoccupancy ventilation.
