I have spoken many times about the

another dimension of sharing, within our remarkable organization, that adds to the

richness of our experiences.

One of the field trips last year was to the

outing, one of our master experts shared 2

tips about features that were built into my

DSLR camera, that I had been unaware of and hence had never used. It was the Live

Members’ News Tom Stephens took third place honors in the

current juried photography show at the Blue

Mountain Foundation for the Arts, in

Collingwood. Tom also is one of the nine

finalists in the annual photography competition of the Bruce Trail Conservancy.

Online voting will determine the overall

winner.

Latow members with work accepted into the

22nd exhibition at McMaster Innovation Park's

Art in the Workplace are Betty Arsenault, Beth Bennett, Lise Bennett,

Chuck Burdick, Mark Emmerson, Dennis

Martin, John Pingree, Andrzej

Pradzynski, Tom Stephens, and Tim

Story. The exhibition opens on December 1.

Images by 12 Latow members are on display

in the Art Gallery of Burlington's Lakeshore and Rotary Rooms. See Keith Marshall’s

article on page 6 for more on this project.

focused on one of the individuals who are

considered amongst the most influential on

the Web, as featured in the Huffington Post

article on the Top 30 Most Influential

Photographers on the Web. Number 15 is Paul Steele who has you smiling from the moment

you discover that his website is

baldhiker.com.

His About Us notes that Paul is founder and

editor of the site as well as a hiker from

northern England, an area of: mountains,

lakes, valleys and fields of green. He invites you to join his Twitter following of over

650,000 subscribers. In the midst of some

inspiring photography and tips he has

incorporated video that takes you directly to

some of the spots that he would like to share.

There are 2 dangers:

Danger #1: One of his pages, in addition to

some inspiring food photography, also

includes the recipes for such things as “Ruby

Grapefruit Tartlets” and “Decadent Chocolate

Tower Cake”. Eat before scanning the site or

cravings may be created.

Danger #2: Photo Galleries and videos of some of his favourite off the beaten path

destinations could lead to expensive additions

to your own travel bucket list.

Closer to home, our October 4 speaker, Philip

Sun, gave 50 Ways to Improve Your Results

in Competitions. We counted and there were

50, but the principles he shared can lead to better and perhaps more disciplined

photographic shooting regardless of whether

the end goal is competition.

We have sessions in November that cover

Fine Art Printing, a guest speaker on Lighting

Cars and Simulated Motion and much more. Take in as many of the Latow events as your

personal calendar will permit and follow the

Calendar on Latow.com.

Also please note and support the Arts

Burlington Christmas Sale, which is fast

approaching and is noted elsewhere in this

issue of In Focus.

Until we meet again,

David

What’s happening in November?

More November details on page 4!

Digital Printing: Nov. 10 Tom Stephens

Interested in Digital Printing? Join Us.

On Thursday, November 8, we'll have a

session on printing with two parts: Preparing

your work for lab printing and at-home printing. Duncan & Wright's lab manager will

be on hand for an informal talk about

preparing files to get the best results from lab

printing. And then some Latow members who

do their own printing will talk about their

experience and bring samples of their work.

If you have questions or something to share,

contact Tom Stephens. If you want to make a

print and bring it along to the meeting, try

the SRGB Calibration Target on the Latow

website (Member downloads/Miscellaneous).

Lightroom Workshop: Nov. 3 Tim Story

Bring an image night

Please bring 2 unprocessed full sized original

RAW , JPG or Tiff images for developing from

scratch to the Lightroom group meeting.

If you have any questions or need assistance,

please email me at [email protected]

New Exposures: Nov. 8 Don Munro

Our ‘New Exposures’ program provides

members with an opportunity to

bring images to share for the purpose of

getting valuable feedback on how these images can be enhanced.

We are asking that you bring just 2

images. We will definitely be able to

comment on one of your images, but may not

get to your second. Please attempt to arrive a

wee bit early and submit your images, stored on memory stick to Tim Story. Format

resolution needs to be 1050 x 1400.

Put Tuesday, November 8 on your calendars

for our next New Exposures evenings. Our

second meeting of the year went well and we

were glad to see so many new members

participating along with some excellent commentary and suggestions.

Digital Group: Nov. 15 Paul Sparrow

Step by Step Photoshop Corrections

This month I’ll take a look at a “step-by-step”

procedure to corrections that should be

applied to all images from camera original

to finished image.

From preliminary

cropping and

processing to

targeted levels and colour correction to

retouching and

cloning of unwanted

objects to final

sharpening I’ll go

through a standard

“process” that all images should go

through.

Automotive Photography: Nov. 22 John Larsen

On November 22, Daniel Caruso will host an

evening discussing his automotive

photography techniques.

He will share both his lighting style and the fascinating post processing that he uses in his

work that includes some very high-end

cars. Even if you are not a gearhead you

should consider Daniel's work to simply be

product lighting. It just happens that his

subject is bigger and usually more expensive than most subjects!

Photo Art Group: Nov. 29 Joh. Friedrich

Impressionism

I am working hard on rehearsing my

presentation about Impressionism and

Photography.

Impressionism and Photography have

something in common. They both evolved at

around the same time in the 1800s. There

are some surprising similarities between the

two.

So why not impress me by showing up on Tuesday, November 29, and I will try to

impress you with some interesting history

about these two art media. I have learned

some things from Impressionism and I want

to share them with you.

Black and White Group Don Mallory

A change this year is communication. I only

have email addresses for folks that have

contacted me at some point in the past. If

you are interested in the programs, please contact me via email, at the B&W Group web

page, or follow me on Twitter

(@MonochromeAttic).

Open Studio Format - Sundays

This fall and winter the program will primarily

be an open studio workshop model. An open studio means just that. It's open. Chemistry

for printing is provided, paper is your

responsibility, however I have paper and you

are welcome to reimburse me at cost.

Any guidance or help that you need is

available; just ask. If there is a process (basic

printing, contact sheets, maximum black, f-stop printing, push or pull processing,

solarization, sabbatier, toning) that you are

interested in or curious about, ask.

I will be in the darkroom on the following

Sundays from 1- 4 p.m. for open workshops:

Sept. 18, 25; Oct. 2, 9, 30; Nov. 6, 3, 20, 27; Dec. 4, 11; Jan. 29; Feb. 5, 19, 26; March 5.

Remember, this is your space, your group. If

you want to do something special, let me

know, so we can figure out how to do it.

Christmas Potluck—reserve now! Nichala Cutts

It's that time of the year!

Latow's annual Christmas

Potluck is just around the corner.

Please join us with your guest on the evening

of Tuesday, December 6 for some great food,

fun and entertainment! It will be held in the

AGB Rotary room, with the food intake at

6:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Please send an e-mail to confirm your attendance and if you are bringing a guest

to [email protected].

Also indicate which you’ll be bringing:

Creative Adventure is the theme of our 2017

seminar speaker, Denise Ippolito. Over the

course of Saturday, April 8, 2017, Denise will

address four topics:

Learning to Think Outside the Box (Denise’s thought processes when

photographing)

Visual Expressions-- mostly "regular"

images from Japan, Falkland Islands, etc.

that are not heavily processed, i.e., the art

of seeing

Blending Nature and Art, Denise's passion, as is well illustrated on her website, and

Bloomin' Ideas, Denise's very artistic and

creative approach to floral subjects -- with

applications to other subjects.

An example of Denise's wide variety of

subject matter.

Denise’s thought process as she

approaches image-making will be a sub-

theme throughout Saturday's seminar,

so photographers of all experience levels can

expect some worthwhile lessons (as well as

gorgeous images).

In her approach to art and the creative

process on Saturday, Denise has been

encouraged to minimize repetition of images

(a complaint about some of last year's

presentations), and to plan for an audience

with a wide range of skill and experience.

The Organizing Committee has also asked Denise to make a clear distinction between

Saturday and Sunday's presentations: on

Saturday, she will show some images made

with creative filters and blurring, but the

detailed how-to explanations for these and

other techniques will be saved for Sunday's

sessions.

Look for more details on the Sunday sessions

in the next newsletter, when we have the

results of the interest survey being sent to all Latow members and to all non-members who

have attended our Photography Weekend in

the last five years.

TIPS & TRICKS

Cold weather

photography tip:

Carry a bulb-type air

blower in your pocket and use it to blow away those snowflakes

that invariably land on your lens even

during a light snowfall.

“The eye should learn to listen before it

looks.”

Robert Frank

John Poulson shot this image of a weathered boardwalk during Latow’s recent outing at Valens Conservation Area. Thirteen members participated in the October 22 field trip.

Book project comes to fruition Keith Marshall

Almost four years ago Latow and the AGB

commenced a project to produce a book of

members’ work that would be taken to

corporate clients interested in buying art. All Latow members were invited to submit

images that would be used to select twelve

members whose work would be in the book:

Ort Baldauf, Tom Stephens, Don Corby,

Tim Story, Andrzej Pradzynski, Jim

Hamilton, John Pingree, Paul Sparrow, Keith Marshall, Frank Myers, Atchuta

Alapati and Wayne Elliott (not currently a

member).

The AGB staff subsequently chose twelve

members and selected eight images from

each to be included in the book. Two books

were produced and eventually one was displayed in Art Etc. at the AGB. This book is

now on display in the entrance lobby by the

vending machines opposite Art Etc.

Recently the AGB offered to display sample

images from the book on the walls of the

Rotary room & Lakeshore room. This is a first for the AGB and we should thank Robert

Steven, the Art Gallery of Burlington CEO for

making this event happen. I would encourage

you to go and see the images and also to

take a look at the book.

Christmas Sale Opportunities Russell Benoit

This year the Soup Bowl and Guild Christmas

Sale will be held from Nov 24 to 27.

Members are invited to enter up to three

framed pieces to be hung in the Lee Chin Gallery. There is an entry fee of $10.00.

If you are entering the Christmas Sale it is a

requirement that you volunteer at some point

during the weekend. Ort Baldauf is passing

around signup sheets for the event. Please

ensure you record your name and time on the volunteer sheet or contact Ort directly.

Intake for the Lee Chin Gallery will be on

Tuesday, Nov. 22 from 6:45 to 8 p.m.

Send the details of your entries to Russell

Benoit:

your name

title of the print type of print

price (If the piece is for show and not for

sale please indicate NFS.)

Members are also invited to book a table to

display unframed prints in the “Unframed

Room.” There is a charge of $10.00 per table. Although this is called the Unframed

Room, small framed pieces no larger than 80

square inches, may also be sold. Tablecloths

are supplied by Latow.

If you would like to book a table in the

Unframed Room please advise Dennis Martin as soon as possible as there are a limited

number of tables available.

If you are planning on using an easel or stand

in addition to a table, please advise Dennis so

he can determine the room layout.

Date and time for the intake for the

Unframed Room will be announced closer to the event.

Whazzup: Exhibits & Competitions

GTCCC Annual Open Competition

Tom Stephens

Once again, Latow members have an

opportunity to test themselves against the

best club photographers in the GTA. We are

one of 24 clubs that belong to GTCCC and these clubs have a total of 2500 members.

So ... if you enter the competition and win --

as many Latow members have in recent years

-- you will have some serious bragging rights!

Not to mention ribbons and certificates.

Here are the key dates:

Submit up to 12 digital images or prints to

Tom Stephens by Jan. 24.

Include your fees of a measly $2/image,

or 12 images for $20 -- a bargain!

Prizes are announced April 22.

There are 12 categories for entries --

something for everyone and slightly tweaked from last year: Wildlife, Birds, Animals,

Botany, Landscape/Geology, People, People-

action, Architecture, Pictorial, Creative Vision,

Prints and Macro. Yes, some of these

categories may overlap, but there are helpful

definitions in the Rules and Guidelines, available in the Members' Download section of

the Latow website.

Last year, we had 76 entries by 12 Latow

members. We can do better in 2017!

Sales opportunity at Bronte Creek Provincial Park Joanne Wright on the volunteer board for

Bronte Creek Provincial Park contacted Arts

Burlington. She is helping to organize the

Bronte Creek Victorian Christmas event.

This year they are inviting artisans to have a

Free table to sell their wares (pottery,

over the course of 3 weekends in December.

If guild members want to participate they can

contact Joanne at her home number 905-336-4041.

(from the National Gallery of Canada)

The National Gallery of Canada is establishing the Canadian Photography Institute (CPI), a world-class, multidisciplinary research centre dedicated to the history,

evolution and future of photography.

The CPI will position Canada as a global leader in the field of photographic studies and offer an active program, accessible collection, research hub and digital portal for

academic and public engagement.

Built on the foundation of the National Gallery’s acclaimed Photographs Collection, the CPI will house one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of photographs and related materials, representing the entire history of the medium and revealing the most important stories of the modern era. With the finest resources and programs, the CPI will attract creative thinkers and scholars from far and wide, stimulate

ideas and generate discoveries.

Why Photography?

Photography is the most varied of pictorial techniques, ranging from daguerreotypes and silver gelatin prints, to large scale back-lit transparencies and building-size murals, digital images to ink jet

prints.

Since its invention in 1839, the photograph has been used as an instrument for scientific research, historical documentation and journalism, as well as artistic expression. As an art form, it has had a profound influence on other media, functioning as an aide-mémoire for painters and sculptors, as a

catalyst for the development of abstraction, and as inspiration for the cubists, who borrowed forms from aerial photography and x-rays. The influence of photography on contemporary culture cannot be overstated; humanity has become ever more dependent on and demanding of images. Digital photography is now a universal, daily, even hourly pastime, a standard medium for both mass and private communication. In future, the photographic

image will be even more ubiquitous and versatile.

Photographs play an important role at the National Gallery, where they have been collected since 1967. Although it has long emphasized the photograph as a category of fine art, in recent years the National Gallery has taken a much broader interest in the medium, in tandem with a contemporary artistic culture that explores the whole photographic field in its rich diversity, as a subject, a source of ideas, or a

bank of shared cultural references.

Corby Custom Framing

We provide quality framing with a lightning-fast turnaround and at very competitive pricing.

We only use conservation quality mat boards. Lower costing paper and acid free mat boards will introduce harmful gases into the frame package that eventually deteriorate your work.

We only use wood moulding as well. Lower cost plastic and MDF mouldings have no longevity.

We specialize in large orders for artists preparing for exhibitions. We'll work with the artist to achieve the best pricing and delivery possible.
