PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Another successful season closes for the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club - culminating in the Section 7 premiership! Each of the senior grades were very competitive with each team narrowly missing the finals. The club's junior ranks are going from strength to strength with another year of fielding some six junior sides along with running another very successful Milo in2CRICKET program.

I'd like to personally thank all those who gave up their time and effort to help make the club the success it is. In particular, I'd like to thank Jenny Buersch for her continuing outstanding effort on being Junior Coordinator which she has put an extraordinary amount of passion into; Jarrad Benson who has done a fantastic job as Treasurer including securing a number of grants again for the club. Andrew Strunk as Senior Director once again put in a significant amount of time ensuring the club had all four senior teams on the park each week; Scott Brodie as Secretary has been meticulous with records of meetings, attending delegates meetings, putting together this Declaration which takes a huge amount of time and so-on. Matt Smith as Events Co-ordinator was instrumental in organising our key fundraisers such as the Quiz Night, Junior Movie Night, Casino Night and the 20/20 Grand Final among many others not to mention helping to organise the BBQs and many other jobs around the club. I'd also like to thank each of the senior captains who put in work every week to ensure the teams run smoothly. Matt Smith as A-grade captain, Harley Simmonds as B-grade captain, Martin Wagner as C-grade captain and Steve Davenport as D-grade captain who have all done a superb job which the club is very grateful for your efforts.

As a club, we're already seeing the efforts of the hard work so many have put in with seven of last year's U15 premiers coming up into the senior ranks. Under the leadership of Steve Davenport and Mark Withers, the Development Team in Section 7 won the premiership after finishing second in the home-and-away season beating top-ranked Coromandel in a low-scoring but extremely tense Grand Final at Blackwood Football Club. It was fantastic to see so many current and past players come and watch the side battle it out - not to mention the efforts by the young lads in particular who managed to defend a meager total of just 111, the team triumphed bowling out a very experienced Coromandel for just 94. A number of these young players have had a taste of higher grade cricket throughout the year as well, and likewise, a number of current junior players have played senior cricket this year. This shows there's a great development pathway for our juniors moving into our senior ranks and something the club is extremely excited about for the future! Prior to Christmas we ran the popular Milo in2CRICKET program at Weymouth Oval on Friday nights. Andrew Gormlie, one of our senior players and currently studying teaching, took on the role as Coordinator and did a fantastic job with four senior players assisting each week. We had around 40 kids aged 5 - 9 each week and was a great success. A big thanks to Andrew for giving up so much of his time to help the club. Due to the rapidly expanding membership at the Ramblers, over the past 2 years we have continued our fundraising to build additional facilities at Weymouth Oval. This season we've made great use of the two additional practice nets and the larger shed the club has installed prior to the commencement of this season. This has meant both Juniors and Seniors can practice together more and allows for even greater numbers of cricketers in the coming seasons.

A new event was added to the social calendar this year with the well-supported Casino Night where we decked out the Community Centre with various casino-style games, such as Black Jack; Roulette; Texas Hold'em and a chocolate wheel. A great time was had by all and something the club will no doubt run with again next year. A key component to any community club is fundraising and this year's quiz night was another fantastic event with a very impressive $3,500 raised for the club. This brought the whole club together and was a great night enjoyed by all. A big thanks to the helpers who came early and assisted in setting up for the night. Those funds will go towards the continuing improvement of facilities at the club as well as a recently purchased BBQ Trailer that the club now owns. This will allow the club to continue fundraising by hiring out the BBQ Trailer as well as provide BBQ facilities for local festivals and so-on, as well as increase awareness of the club.

Last but not least I'd like to recognise our sponsors who contribute to the on-going financial success of the club. They include our major sponsor of Skyworld Contractors (Kevin O'Looney). Kevin has been a great supporter of our club and in turn, please help by supporting Kevin and our other sponsors wherever you can. A new sponsor this year has been The Hub Pizza Bar via Cesar who has donated generously to the club and we hope this continues on for many years to come. Ongoing sponsors from previous years which continue to provide valuable donations are free bread from Blackwood Bakers Delight and weekly meat trays for raffles from the Blackwood Butcher. As always Steve Davenport and Paul Durham of Promotions R Us sponsored our Quiz Night with further donations from Champs Sports in Blackwood. Details of all sponsors are on the club website - www.coromandelramblers.com.au.

Thanks to everyone for their efforts this year on helping to make the club what it is. It's a fantastic community club which I believe is truly welcoming and a good place to play cricket. I encourage anyone who would like to be a larger part of it to join the committee next season as we do need more enthusiastic people willing to dedicate some time to the club. Looking forward to seeing everyone next year for another successful season! Glen Rosie President

As you are all aware this is my second year as a Junior Coordinator for the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. The 2012/2013 season was very challenging with my own personal life with the loss of my Dad. Also another challenge was trying to have full teams every week in all the junior sides. However once again I saw a vast improvement in all the junior players from the Under 9’s to the Under 15’s. This year I managed to go and see almost every team for a short period of time and found that we have quite a few stars amongst our juniors. We will also see another four junior players going to join the seniors next season and I wish them all the best in their future in the seniors for the Ramblers. The 2012/13 season, showed we still have a high level of players in our junior program at the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. We have one Under 9 side, two Under 11 sides, two Under 13 sides and one Under 15 side. Once again we also ran the Milo In2cricket program with the numbers increasing from the year before and we found the program was a great success. A big thank you has to go to Andrew Gormlie who ran the Milo In2cricket program with the help of some of our senior players. We also had some of the kids from Milo In2cricket also playing in the Under 9 competition which was great to see. Behind every team we have for the junior program we need a coach and I would like to thank Forbes Thompson, Justin Rowley, Andrew O’Keefe, Darren Parker, Andrew Strunk and Phillip Henshall for taking on this very important role in the juniors. They have given up their time to train, go to coaching courses, to enter scores in “My Cricket” and to coach on Sunday mornings and Monday evenings for the 2012/2013 season. A special mention also needs to go to Sharon Hunkin, Mandy O’Keefe and Mark Penn for all their efforts in helping me by collecting meat and bread for the BBQ’s, organising everything on the nights of the BBQ’s and fixing problems when they arise with gas bottles being empty or doors needing to be fixed on the BBQ. There are also others volunteers that support the coaches with scoring, managing the team and umpiring and also all of the juniors need to thank their parents for participating and bringing them to the trainings and games. A special mention also needs to be made to our junior sponsors, as without them, the fees and charges for many of these club programs would be much higher. Once again, Kevin O’Looney from Skyworld Outdoor Blinds provided the major sponsorship for the club and our new sponsor, Caesar from Hub Pizza Bar also providing sponsorship for the club. In addition, other junior and senior sponsors also provided goods and/or services to the club across the year, including Blackwood Butchers, Bakers Delight at Blackwood, Joan’s Pantry, Champs Sports in Blackwood and Promotions R Us, for which we must all be thankful for. Since they have helped support the club, I would urge everyone from each family to consider using their services. I believe that all of our members including players, parents, volunteers and spectators can hold their head up high and be proud of being part of such a great club and I hope to see you all back again for the 2013/2014 season. If anyone is not returning next year I wish you all the best in your new activity and remember that you are always welcome back to Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. I hope that each and every one of you has enjoyed the 2012/2013 season at the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. As a club, I hope that we have helped develop your cricket game further and provided you with plenty of opportunities to socialise and to make new friendships. I wish you well in your winter activities and see you in September. Don’t forget to come to the AGM as we would love to see more of you volunteering to make the junior program the best there is to offer in the association.

TROPHIES AND AWARDS 2012/13

A.R. BENSON A GRADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Matt ‘SMITHY’ Smith for once again winning the A.R.Benson A Grade Player of the year award for the 5th time tying with a new player to the club this season Tom Edwards scoring 10 points each. Matt took on the A Grade Captaincy this season and did a great job. Matt Played all 11 games opening the batting making 445 runs at an average of 40 with 1 century and a 94, also taking 7 wickets at an average of 27, but probably under bowling himself due to the depth in the bowling attack in the A Grade this season. He also played part in some large partnerships throughout the season. Well done Matt Congratulations to Tom “Whopper” Edwards on being joint winner of the A.R Benson A Grade Player of the Year in his first season with the club. Tom came to the club to enjoy himself with Harley Simmonds in the B’s after a couple of years off cricket. After some bad luck and bowling to batsman incapable of “getting a knick” Tom was promoted to a depleted A Grade team to bolster the bowling line up. In his first game against Glenelg we witnessed his ability to hit big and then to bowl fast, miserly opening bowling spells with his first 10 overs going for only 7 runs. Wickets did not come fast but had he been assisted by the slips cordon several more wickets would have come his way. Unfortunately no catches were taken in slips off Tom’s bowling yet 10 or more chances went begging. He ended the A grade season with 16 wickets from 8 games. Tom also proved invaluable with the bat and played some important innings during the season including a crucial 60 not out against South Rd to keep our finals chances alive. 173 runs @ 25 from 8 games is a great effort considering he regularly batted in the tail. Well done Tom and we wish you the very best in your cricketing future wherever that takes you.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR Congratulations to Glen ‘G’ Rosie for winning the Player of the Year Award. Glen polled 15 votes, 2 in the B Grade and 13 in the D Grade beating Steve Davenport with 13 votes. Glen did not have a great start to the season having problems with an injured shoulder and also battling Glandular Fever. He played his first game in the B Grade scoring 33 runs putting on an important partnership with Sam Davenport. He then went down to the D Grade to help Steve Davenport with the development team of kids from the last years U15’s. He decided to play as a batsman rather than a bowler which he is known for because of his shoulder. Not known as a batsman he opened the batting making 444 at an average of 63 from 7 games including 2 centuries, his first for the club and other scores of 65 and 59. Glen also took 5 wickets in the D Grade and played a big part in the successful D Grade Premiership. Well done Glen.

He was a member of the 2000/01 B Grade and 2004/05 D Grade Premiership Teams, played in the seasons the A Grade won the Premiership in 1994/95 and 1998/99, and also played in the Twenty20 Grand Final Team in 2010/11 and is a Life Member. Well done Dave.

100 GAMES Congratulations to Ben ‘BENNY’ Chilton for playing 100 Games for the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. Ben is the third generation of the Chilton Family to play for the Ramblers following in the footsteps of his Father Brett and Grandfather Des. All three of them have captured hat-tricks for the club, Des having two and Ben capturing his with a LBW. Ben has played most of cricket for the club with Brett in the C and D Grades. A couple of highlights of Ben are a one handed leaping catch on the boundary at Weymouth oval this season and playing in the C Grade Premiership Team in 2005/06. Well Done Ben. Ben’s accomplishments are 1117 runs, 11 wickets, 4 C Grade and 3 D Grade fielding trophies.

Congratulations to Tom ‘MADDOG’ Muir for playing 100 games for the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. Tom has played all his games for the club in the C,D or E grades, playing in 3 Premierships sides including the recent D Grade Premiership against Coromandel. Tom has scored 1029 runs making his highest score this season with 49no and has taken 15 wickets including a hat-trick. What Tom is famously known for is his appetite at selection night BBQ’s and Pizza nights testing the food while cooking the BBQ. His proudest moment for club apart from winning premierships was receiving the ’CHOP’ the BBQ Man of the Year Award. Well Done Tom.

10 000 RUNS Congratulations to Steve ‘Davo’ Davenport on becoming the first player since Len Kenyon to pass 10 000 runs for the Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club. Steve has played a record 380 games scoring 10 250 runs at an average of 27.9 including 7 centuries equal with Scott Brodie, 3 behind David Conlon and only 15 behind Len Kenyon. This season Steve went back down to D Grade to Captain the development team of Under 15’s from last season. He had a great season with the bat scoring 528 runs at an average of 52.8. With a few seasons left in him there is no reason why could not score more than 12 or 13 000 runs before he decides to hang up the whites. Congratulations Steve.

GLEN WATCHMAN CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Matt ‘SMITHY’ Smith for being awarded the Glen Watchman Club Person of the year award. Matt this season gave up the Presidency of the club to concentrate on the A Grade Captaincy. Matt also took on the role of the events coordinator organising all our major events throughout the season including the Casino Night at the Coromandel Valley Community Centre, the Junior Movie Night at Weymouth Oval and our successful Quiz Night at Blackwood Memorial Hall. Matt has also been busy organising meat and drinks for all BBQ’s including the Coro Festival and the T20 Grand Final. He has also been instrumental in organising a BBQ trailer for the club which can be used at our big events or hiring out. Well done Matt.

HAYDEN HILL MOST PROMISING JUNIOR

The Hayden Hill Most Promising Junior for the 2012/13 season has been awarded to Tom Callow. I had the good fortune to play both Cricket and Footy with Hayden Hill and have known him and his family for many years. Hayden was a team player, a larakin, a mate you could count on always. Hayden was a tremendous A grade bowler and late order bat. But most of all Hayden was a true Coromandel Valley Rambler. Hayden passed away from cancer quite a few years ago and is perched high in the Coromandel Valley Cemetery keeping his eye on both Hawthorndene and Weymouth Ovals. Tom Callow is a most deserving winner of this award and epitomizes everything Hayden Hill stood for. Tom rang me on the Thursday night before the first game and asked if it was too late to play as a wicketkeeper in our side after doing a pre-season at Sturt. Tom has made wicket keeping his own and has had a tremendous year behind the stumps, pocketing 5 out of 5 points in almost every game he has played. Tom’s display behind the stumps in the Grand Final was faultless and insured the Coromandel Side would find runs hard to come by. His catch off Zac Howell was an absolute classic. Tom’s, batting improved out of sight this year and was eventually given the role of opening the batting with Glen Rosie. His role was to be a catalyst to some big scores made by the Ramblers late in the season. Tom was also played two games in the B grade side this year acquitting himself nicely behind the stumps. Tom is a great lad, full of life, good fun (a larakin) and with time will be the next big thing at our club as a wicketkeeper /batsmen A gifted all round sports person, Tom missed the last half of the last minor round game and the semi-final to be a part of an elite soccer squad travelling to Italy and the UK. Congratulations to Tom Callow on winning the Most Promising Junior Cricketer for 2012/13. Steve Davenport D Grade Captain

DAVID FERRIS MOST IMPROVED PLAYER

The David Ferris Most Improved Player for the 2012/13 season has been awarded to Angus Cadman. Angus Cadman came to the club this year as an unknown. His efforts at practice were to be admired in the few sessions pre -season and it would be fair to say he showed some talent both with the bat and with the ball. Angus’s efforts with the ball were very good early in the year and by mid season he graduated to opening the bowling, often doing the bullocking work from one end against the breeze. Angus continued to be among the top two hard workers in the team at practice and his batting also began to blossom. Due to his opening the bowling and in the name of fair play to all, Angus was only given a couple of cracks up the order whilst batting. He acquitted himself nicely and for mine he was an obvious choice to fill in as opening batsmen in the semi-final when Tom Callow departed for overseas. Angus batted for 21 overs in the semi-final insuring a 60 plus opening partnership and backed up bowling beautifully to push the team into a Grand Final. Angus is a great lad, listens well and puts what he has learnt into effect on game day. There is no secret to what it takes to improve, practice, practice and more practice. Angus missed very few

Page 12: PRESIDENT’S REPORT · Shop 65 Hub Shopping Centre Aberfoyle Park SA 5159 Ph 8270 4460 Blackwood Bakers Delight ‘Real Bread, Real People, Real Delight’ Shop 6, 250 Main Rd, Blackwood

practice session and bowled and batted his heart out from 6.15 until 8.00PM. The club looks forward to watching Angus’s career develop and feels sure it won’t be long until we see another all -rounder join the A

grade ranks.

Steve Davenport D Grade Captain

DUCK CLUB With 44 players capturing 61 ducks we could have 4 grades for Duck Club this season. There was 4 players with 3 ducks each, 9 with 2

ducks and 31 with one duck each so picking out who makes the top 12 was very difficult.

The Captain of the Duck Club this season goes to a player that featured at number 5 last season. He made 28 runs from 7 innings and 3 ducks in the A Grade. His was sent back to the B Grade due to the lack of runs in A Grade made 53 not out, was promoted back only to score his third duck is Andrew Work. With 3 other players achieving 3 ducks, picking a vice captain was tough. So scoring 2 ducks before for the finals, then not scoring in the Grand Final and in his 100th game the Vice Captaincy goes to Tom ‘MADDOG’ Muir with 3 ducks. Opening for the 2012/13 Duck Club is Adrian Howard and Justin Langley with 3 ducks each. Adrian captured one in the B Grade, moved up to the A Grade to open the batting ended up with 2 more. Justin was promoted from last year’s D Grade after batting well but found it hard against the harder, better bowling in the B Grade. Andrew O’Keefe a new player to the club this season comes in at Number 3 after achieving 2 ducks from 3 innings and scoring 1 run in the A Grade. At Number 4 is the duck club wicket keeper, John Ferris who captured 2 ducks. Number 5 is our Duck Club Captain Andrew Work. Number 6 is Andrew Gormlie who is an allrounder for the Duck Club as he can bat, bowl and keep.He was unlucky not to score any runs in his half a game in the B Grade, he also ended up with one duck in the A Grade. Simon Billett another all-rounder comes in at Number 7 with 2 ducks claiming his from facing one ball in each innings, the first one run out and the second playing the ball onto his stumps. At Number 8 is our Duck Club Vice Captain, Tom Muir. Number 9, 10 and 11 these players could bat in any of these positions. Dan Hayes only playing 2 and a half games claiming 2 ducks and no runs is at Number 9. Number 10 featured last year, so keeping up his form is Mitch Higgins with 2 ducks Coming in, in his accustomed batting at Number 11 position is Alex Manning who is a past captain of the Duck Club. Although he hit a six off the back of his bat in a different innings, Alex makes the team with both of his ducks being first ball. Our Twelve Man is Jarrad Benson who claimed 2 ducks in the A Grade but misses out on the first team as he captained, made 207 runs and won the batting trophy in 4 games in the B Grade. Very unlucky not to make the twelve is another all-rounder in Kingsley Smith who claimed 2 ducks in the B Grade and missed games in the middle of the season to get married.

BBQ MAN OF THE YEAR The BBQ Man of the Year Award has been awarded to Alex Manning.

Alex was an outstanding contender for this year's award putting in the hard yards at many Milo nights as well as the Bunnings fundraiser along with various other cooking sessions throughout the season. Alex had that mystical squeaky toy in his sights from early on in the season and like a dog with a bone, he hung on throughout.

Speaking of dogs, Tom "Mad Dog" Muir put in another solid performance this year and if it there was a BBQ Man of the Decade, he surely must be a very strong contender. Nick and Andrew Work backed up again well this year, however they were upstaged by their mum, Ruth, who helped out at two key events namely Bunnings and the Coro Community Event. But there can only be one winner, so congratulations Alex - an honour well deserved.

B GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

At the beginning of this season we had a simple goal of making the finals and to have consistency in the side. The consistency is key to creating a bond within the group and therefore creating a team dynamic that would hopefully last for years to come. The start of the year was rocky to say the least with 26 different players and a change in captain happening in the first 4 rounds. However even with this unstable start we were 2-2 and all of the boys were enjoying their cricket and the team was jelling. In these games there were 6 players getting their first taste of B Grade cricket (Tom Edwards, Justin Langley, Robbie Jones, Andrew O’Keefe, Tom Callow and Sam Donnelly) and many more that had little experience at the level. Tom Edwards only played the first 3 games and was then upgraded to the A’s and Andrew O’Keefe also played some A Grade cricket throughout the season and served as vice captain in the B Grade. Justin Langley and Robbie Jones were the 2 most capped players for the season and after terrific seasons in the D Grade last season, proved that they both could play at the B Grade Level. Tom Callow and Sam Donnelly have been part of the Development side this season and are only 15 years old; they both showed signs of cricket ability beyond their years and will certainly be key players for the club in the future. With many of the mainstay B Grade players over the last few years there needed to be some younger, less experienced players stand up and they did. Alex Manning and Darcy Kildea where 2 players that took there opportunity by the horns and didn’t let go. After playing minimal B Grade cricket before this season, both of their first performances were outstanding and then continued on for the rest of the season. Alex taking 4/13 and then being only 3 wickets of the bowling trophy at seasons end. Darcy Scoring 53*, finishing the season with an average of 45 and become the teams wicket keeper after it being rotated in the first couple of games. The side showed some good form going into Xmas with wins against Belair and ICC Sharks, but couldn't capitalise on strong positions in games lost to Panorama and Southern. Whilst our bowling was generally tight, our batsmen struggled with consistency and posting scores above 200. When coming back to the team we were 4-4 and were playing archrival Coromandel. This was a massive game because if we won we would have been entrenched in the finals race and if we lost we would be out completely. After losing the toss and being sent in, the opening partnership of Josh Hassuen and Matt Judd was a great platform being 0/111 at the halfway make. However they both fell quickly after lunch and without anyone else scoring over 25 we were all out for 201. This was still a very respectable score and with the bowling attack we had were confident about defending it the following week. Next week had arrived and the team was eager to get on the field and start, the opening spells of Kingsley Smith and Robbie Jones were great and unlucky having beat the bat on countless occasions. Spells from Mitch Higgins and Alex Manning were crucial in the middle providing 5 wickets while still keeping the run rate down. The run rate required for

Page 16: PRESIDENT’S REPORT · Shop 65 Hub Shopping Centre Aberfoyle Park SA 5159 Ph 8270 4460 Blackwood Bakers Delight ‘Real Bread, Real People, Real Delight’ Shop 6, 250 Main Rd, Blackwood

the final 10 overs was around 5 and they only had 4 wickets in hand. The death bowling from Andrew Work and Kingsley Smith was superb, however the teams fielding left something to be desired with 6 catches going down during this time. Whilst this was going on we still had a chance to win on the last ball of the day but as a result we were not participating in the finals. In conclusion it was a disappointing season for the team given the potential, however I believe this will only make us stronger in the future and come back bigger and better next year. I would like to thank everyone for playing this year and putting in 100% every game, also to the Ramblers for allowing me to captain this side at such a young age. Harley Simmonds B Grade Captain

C GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

G’day all from Wags! The 2012/13 C grade season looked full of promise at the beginning with a mix of young and oldish making themselves available for selection. After being relegated to Section 5, hopes were high that this blend of youth and experience would be a strong chance of making a finals appearance. An impromptu conversation with Smithy at the Gillespie indoor nets saw a new captain (myself) instilled, a position I accepted with a bit of trepidation. After captaining the D grade the previous year and hardly setting the world on fire performance wise, the responsibility of leading a group strong in club stalwarts seemed a reasonable challenge. Challenge accepted! The season started strongly with consecutive wins over South Park, Sheidow Park and ICC Sharks. Last year’s captain BC Brett Chilton helped himself to 80 runs in the opening game, then a fighting 30 in round 3. Kev O’Looney was in great form with score of 55, 31 and 32 in the first 4 games and provided thoughtful information on upcoming weather forecasts. Patrick Needham was a Rolls Royce, constantly scoring around the 30 to 40 run mark and throwing away a potential century every innings. But batting wise the season belonged to the vice -captain Scott Brodie. After starting reasonably slowly and being interrupted by surgery, Brodes dominated the batting, his 110no against North Haven an absolute highlight. His 87 no against Sheidow Park brilliant but unlucky, running out of partners while looking the goods for another century. Other batting mentionables are Andrew Nurofen ‘Strunk’s’ fighting 65 against Keswick and Leigh ‘Kanga’ Porter’s majestic 74no against North Haven, partnering with the Brodes for a 213 run opening partnership and a 10 wicket win. Bowling wise, after losing Mitchy Higgins and Alex Manning to the B Grade after some great performances, the ball was thrown around a bit to whoever put their hand up. Benny Chilton put in some great performances with a couple of 4 fors and a 3 for 15 against Sheidow Park in round 2. Bennys bowling was full of fire and he gave his all every ball every game. His fielding was outstanding too with a cracker of a catch at deep square leg against North Haven. The silver fox, Brett ( Johnny Walker Blue ) Chilton was also outstanding with the ball, his 76 overs at an average of 23

was a great return considering he normally came on in the middle overs against some established batsmen. Trent Morey, Simon Billett, Sam Squires and Patty Needham all bowled great spells when they were available. After the strong start to the season performances started to wane slightly especially when confronted with some stronger sides. Players not available for certain reasons or being promoted to the B grade added to the instability of the side. The

opening batting pair changing 4 times over the season gives you some idea of how tumultuous the season was selection wise, but C grade is for social players. The beer we shared together at the end of the game was most enjoyable as was the good natured banter. Even though the results didn’t go our way towards the end of the season, a great bunch of blokes got to enjoy playing and socialising together in what is in my opinion the greatest sport in the world for the best club in Adelaide. Go you Ramblers! Go you Nurofen C Graders! Cheers, Wags. Martin Wagner C Grade Captain

D GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT Junior Development Squad Report 2012/13. Firstly thank you to the committee for entrusting me with the development of these junior boys. It is a credit to Ashley and Jenny on the work that they have and are doing with junior players at CVRCC. Thanks also to Dave Benson and Richie Veroude on the work that they put in last year with our under 15 squad. Their work took the boys to a level to have them ready to play senior cricket and made my job this season a lot easier. My sincere thanks also go to Mark Withers and Glen Rosie for their assistance and expertise both at practice and on the ground, the boys are much wiser for your contributions. The year started with the club deciding to not enter an under 17 team but to develop the next crop of CVRCC juniors in section 7 of the adult competition. The boys came up against a lot of experienced cricketers and teams all who had many good things to say about what our club is doing to insure that our CVRCC will continue to exist well into the future. The first round saw the boys play Coromandel at Blackwood Football Club, where after a good start the boys somewhat predictably slumped to be out for just over 100. The bowling effort was great but we came up a little short. However some stars were born and with a little help from myself and Mark Withers the club had reason to be optimistic. Only one game later we were to beat Kenilworth Cricket Club who also finished in the top 4. The boys were on their way and the raw enthusiasm, and talent that was on show began a tsunami that engulfed every team that we played for the rest of the season with the only hiccup being a close loss to Plympton the game before Christmas.

Page 20: PRESIDENT’S REPORT · Shop 65 Hub Shopping Centre Aberfoyle Park SA 5159 Ph 8270 4460 Blackwood Bakers Delight ‘Real Bread, Real People, Real Delight’ Shop 6, 250 Main Rd, Blackwood

The boys experienced a bit of everything during the year. We had to hold on to eventually beat North Haven away by one run. Angus Cadman had to bowl the last over in the last game of the year against 2nd placed Kenilworth to claim a home final with only 6 runs to win off the last 4 balls. We made the running and we had to chase the other teams, we dealt with key players being out and we blooded some current under 15’s Ben Kanck and Daniel Bartle. Almost any situation that could be served up in a game of cricket was served up and was dealt with. Which bring us to the last fortnight of the season. The team finished second at the end of the minor round thus giving us a home final v Plympton the only side we had not beaten in the season. We lost the toss but for some reason were sent in to bat. We scored 178 runs and had to defend the score on the Sunday. As we had all season the boys positive attitude saw Plympton defeated scoring only 120+ runs. A great effort by our bowlers and our fielding as was the case in most weeks was a little better than the week before that. Grand Final day ironically was played against Coromandel Cricket Club at Blackwood Football Club the same venue that the boys began their journey back in October. I won the toss and batted and after only two overs the rain came down and ultimately we lost 8 overs of batting. Coromandel who we had beaten only a couple of games before impressively changed their game plan and bowled steadily and fielded brilliantly. Sam Donnelly with 37 insured we would pass the score we made at the Hill last time but only just finishing 9/111. An immature team could be forgiven for thinking the game was over there and then on Saturday night, however these young lads with a never say never attitude came back on Sunday thinking we could still win this game. Coromandel decided they would take the long route home and slowly chip away at the runs playing into our hands. Our mature bowlers were sensational but it was the calm and poise of our young bowlers and fielders that may have surprised most of the large crowd. Telford and Howell did most of the damage and were well supported by Cadman and Donnelly who had to plow into the wind. The boys held Coromandel to 17 runs in the first 13 overs 0 wickets, 15 runs in the second 15 overs with 4 wickets , and 21 runs in the third 15 overs taking 4 wickets. Coro went into the last session 8/53 needing 58 runs to win. They gave it a good shot , we grassed a chance but ultimately the CVRCC Tsunami dumped its full force on Coromandel Cricket Club and the Section 7 competition taking the last two wickets and leaving Coromandel on 94,17 runs short. A premiership it is fair to say was not even in our thinking at the seasons beginning. My charter was to develop and fast track the lads to be able to play senior cricket to the best of their abilities, to insure that the game of cricket was enjoyed and to teach club values. Each we week we were surprised by an individual and by the team in there development, their sportsmanship, their ability to listen and to learn. A premiership was a product of getting all of the processes right, by stepping up when it was your turn, to practice as if you were playing in a game (most often anyway) and to play with a sense of team and a sense of personal and club pride. Every player in the side improved this year as a player and as a person, from myself and the other senior boys to all of our junior players. Here is a quick wrap up of each players year. Harry Strunk was our 12th man in the finals and constant practice player who has played three games during the season. Straight out of the under 13’s. Harry is showing already a huge potential as a batsmen and Keeper. Harry’s attitude is sensational and is found in the nets not only on Tuesday and Thursday but most other days as well. We thank Harry for his huge contribution to our side this season. I would like to thank practice coordinator Andrew Strunk for the huge effort he has put in each week since early September. Andrew continued to come down and assist us in the nets during the finals and on finals game day to help us with some fielding drills etc. Andrew’s job is not an easy one and is very time consuming. Andrew’s dedication is another small piece in the jigsaw that enabled us to be successful this season. Thanks to Andrew and to his family for allowing him to put the time and effort into this position. Steve Davenport D Grade Captain

GLEN WATCHMAN CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR

In 1979/80 the club decided to honour its founder, Mr Glen Watchman, by initiating an award to be presented to the Clubman of the Year. The Clubman Award is awarded to a diligent and hardworking person who has had a strong input and contribution to the club performance, generally off the field, for the current year. Glen first played for the Ramblers in 1928/29 and played continuously until 1939/40 when the club went into recess during the Second World War. The Club was reformed in 1947/48 and Glen continued to play from then until his last season in 1966/67 - another 20 years. Up to the mid-sixties Glen was the club. He was Secretary, Treasurer, team organiser, matting steward and Association Delegate. His contribution on the field was just as impressive, with 3606 runs and 336 wickets in 217 games. Glen won 3 Bowling Trophies during the 1950’s and remains 7th on the Bowling Aggregate, 14th on the Games Aggregate and 19th on the Batting Aggregate for the club. These figures do not include statistics from the years he played before the war for which records are no longer available. Glen was also the Patron of the Ramblers from 1970 until his death in February 1985.

HAYDEN HILL MOST PROMISING JUNIOR Hayden Hill joined the Ramblers in 1980/81 after he moved to South Australia from Sydney. Sport was Hayden’s thing. He played cricket in the summer and footy in the winter - too much sport was never enough. In 4 seasons with the B Grade, Hayden won the Bowling Trophy three times and, when promoted to the A Grade for the next four seasons, he also won that Bowling Trophy three times. Hayden Hill could bowl and in 96 games in 9 seasons he took 244 wickets. This is a remarkable effort considering he battled cancer for almost three of the nine years. In his eight full seasons, Hayden never missed a game, such was his commitment to and enthusiasm for the game of cricket. Hayden died in 1990 after putting up a very brave fight. The Hayden Hill Most Promising Junior Award is awarded in memory of Hayden to a junior player (under 20 years of age) who displays just some of the qualities that Hayden displayed in his short time with us.

DAVID FERRIS MOST IMPROVED PLAYER Each year the club has awards a trophy to the club’s most improved player as voted by the all the captains and the coach. The award was started because many players are ineligible for the Most Promising Junior Award. The Most Improved Player must have played at least two seasons with the club and have demonstrated a marked improvement not only in their performance, but also in their attitude and involvement in the club. David Neil has donated the trophy and requested that it be named the David Ferris Most Improved Player Award. David Ferris played 161 games for the club in the 1970’s and 1980’s. He scored 1019 runs at 11.2 and took 288 wickets at 19.1. David played mostly in the A Grade and captained the side in 1979/80 and 1980/81. David was awarded the Clubman Award in 1981/82 and won the A Grade Bowling Trophy in 1975/76 and 1977/78. He was a great clubman and served on the committee for many years, including holding the position of Treasurer from 1974 - 1977.
