November 2011
Dear Friends of Saint Mary’s High School,
As I gathered my thoughts in preparation for this Report on Annual Giving, I reflected on the simple words of Jesus, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” I am gratefully overwhelmed by the alumni, parents, students, and friends of St. Mary’s, who have demonstrated a spirit of giving back to our School. My hope is that each of you finds an incredible sense of fulfillment in your willingness to give.
With the economy experiencing continued uncertainty during the 2010–2011 academic year, St. Mary’s appreciated more than ever, its steadfast supporters who have helped to build a strong financial foundation for today and for the future. Even more uplifting, last year we saw a significant increase in the number of new alumni donors, which we hope to build upon for the future. We cannot achieve so much without your consistent and continued generosity.
Our goal with this Report on Annual Giving is to be accountable for the stewardship of your resources. While saying thank you is very important, it is far more important that we express our gratitude through our accomplishments. Here is a sampling of a few of the wonderful things happening here that are supported by your generosity:
◗ St. Mary’s became a technological leader of high schools across the country as we implemented the iPad 2 curriculum for this year’s freshman class. ◗ 208 students in the Class of 2011 earned $14 million in scholarships and were accepted into 120 colleges and universities.
◗ Tuition assistance funds helped to defray the cost for 37 students whose families want a Catholic education for their children, but who struggle to meet tuition.
◗ 68 incoming freshmen attended the annual summer program at Camp Marist on Ossipee Lake in New Hampshire. The Freshman Camp serves as both a relationship building exercise and an introduction to the spirit and family of St. Mary’s High School.
Please accept this Report on Annual Giving as our special way to thank you for believing in our leadership, our mission, our students, our past, and our future. Every gift, no matter how large or small, is making a significant difference in the life of St. Mary’s High School.
With heartfelt appreciation,

President’s Report on Annual Giving | 9
Parents make the ultimate investment by entrusting St. Mary’s with the care and education of their children. We are particularly grateful to those parents, both past and current, who generously support St. Mary’s with gifts to the Annual Fund or participation in the Gaels Parents’ Association events.

Parents – Current and Past
“My wife, Peggy, and I are so pleased to have given our small contribution to Saint Mary’s High School after seeing the influence upon our son after only a few weeks of attendance in his freshman year at St. Mary’s.
Having had four sisters graduate from St. Mary’s and all four having gone on to professional careers, two lawyers, one doctor and an administrator, my mother was extremely pleased with her decision to send her girls to such an institution.
As a Catholic educator, my mother, Irene Mattone, lived by a simple code, “Work as if everything depended on you and pray as if everything depended on God.”
My wife, Peggy and I believe that this is the lasting instruction which St. Mary’s High School seeks to instill in their students. My wife and I pray that we will be able to work hard enough to continue this contribution over the coming years.”– Joseph Mattone P’15

New Donors to the Annual FundIn a special way, we recognize those alumni and friends who made their first gift to St. Mary’s High School in 2010-11. Their support makes a statement about their pride in the school and confidence in its future. A gift of any size, every year, is the only way for St. Mary’s to succeed in growing the number of alumni donors.
We look forward to retaining their support and adding new names to the growing list of generous benefactors.

Scholarship and Tuition AssistanceThe ability to help students and their families finance a St. Mary’s education is a most critical need at St. Mary’s High School. Scholarship opportunities help to recruit and reward uniquely talented students. Tuition assistance responds to students with immediate and unforeseen financial difficulties. In many instances, this support means the difference in their ability purse a Catholic education.
On behalf of the grateful student beneficiaries, we acknowledge the donors who directed their 2010-11 gifts to scholarship and tuition assistance.

Scholar Profile
Hillary De La Cruz Ruiz’s parents emigrated from Ecuador in 1993. Upon entering kindergarten, she did not speak a word of English. “However, instead of letting that obstacle get the best of me, I worked extremely hard, and by the time I entered second grade, I spoke perfect English.” When she was accepted to St. Mary’s High School, she knew that tuition costs would be a challenge. “My mother constantly drilled into me that faith can move mountains. And, it really has.” The Beba DeGaal Memorial Scholarship is partially responsible for allowing Hillary to finish her senior year at St. Mary’s. A member of the National Honor Society and the Scholar Service Institute, Mrs. DeGaal
and her family would be proud of Hillary’s scholarship and commitment to education.

“Margo and I absolutely believe in the power of ‘tithing and giving back’. Our own experience about all the blessings we have in our lives, is that the more we give away, the more that comes back. That is the way life works, and that is the way to foster hope and grace in the lives of others we touch though our prayers and charitable giving. Spiritual enrichment is paramount, yet God has blessed us to do His work though our charitable donations.”

2010 Don Monti Memorial Golf ClassicThe Don Monti Memorial Golf Classic is an annual fundraising event to benefit Saint Mary’s High School. Don Monti was a St. Mary’s student who died of leukemia at the end of his sophomore year in 1972.
In appreciation for all that St. Mary’s gave to Don, his parents the late Tita and Joe Monti, his sister Caroline Monti Saladino, her husband Arthur, and his brother, Richard Monti generously support St. Mary’s High School. The golf classic has been named in Don’s memory since 1996. Every year, alumni come together to rekindle St. Mary’s connections and raise money which directly benefits current St. Mary’s students.
Another component was added in 2003 when the Coughlin Family chose to honor the memory of the late Timothy J. Coughlin ’76 who was tragically killed on 9/11/01, with the presentation of the “Timothy J. Coughlin Outstanding Alumnus Award”. This growing list of alumni who are committed to St. Mary’s High School is an inspiration to all who attend the outing.

“My three brothers and I were fortunate to have the nurturing environment of Saint Mary’s High School and we benefited enormously. We have supported St. Mary’s because it is our duty to give to an institution which was so vital and influential for the four of us. We have maintained the cycle of generosity, in that our generation, which has gone successfully ahead, looks back to provide support in order for a new generation of students at St. Mary’s to be as blessed as my brothers and I were.”

On behalf of our student-athletes, their coaches and the Athletics department staff, thank you for your support.
Freshman Camp2011 marked the 27th Freshman Camp at Camp Marist in New Hampshire. Freshman Camp is a week long orientation experience at Camp Marist with teambuilding activities to facilitate new students’ transition to High School. Students, parents, and alumni cite it as one of the most important parts of a St. Mary’s experience.
Mr. Vincent Gschlecht (Mr. G.) has been involved with Freshman Camp since its inception. “Each year I am amazed at what happens at Freshman Camp as I watch total strangers quickly become friends and just have good fun together.”
This year, alumni were invited to make a gift to help underwrite the rising cost of Freshman Camp for the Class of 2015. The generosity of the following alumni and friends helped support the 68 freshmen who participated in this unique St. Mary’s experience.

iPad2 InitiativeThe launching of the new integrated iPad 2 curriculum with the Class of 2015 put St. Mary’s at the forefront of educational technology. It also created a unique and meaningful opportunity for alumni and friends to support the education of individual students.
During a conference call among the newly established alumni class agents, Muffin Maher Sauvigne ’75 wisely suggested that alumni be given an opportunity to make a gift to support the iPad initiative. With a gift of $500 or more, donors’ names were placed on the back of the device so that students would know that an interested St. Mary’s alumnus/a invested in their education. Alumni used the opportunity in beautiful ways to remember beloved departed, to honor friends and teachers, and most importantly to demonstrate their support for a new generation of St. Mary’s students who are continuing the same fundamental St. Mary’s education in new and exciting ways.
We are grateful to the following donors for their generous support of this new initiative. With your continued generosity we look forward to funding for future classes.

“I give out of gratitude for my transformational experience at St. Mary’s: my academic ‘awakening’, my social development and the inculcation of Christian values. I also credit St. Mary’s with a lifelong appreciation and enthusiasm for learning.
I give because my teachers, administrators and the parish provided an environment of excellence and heartfelt care for each student. Above all, I give to St. Mary’s in honor of one exemplary staff member – a role model for me to this day - Mr. James Volkland, who inspired me to become a teacher. Jim, I can’t thank
you enough.”– Ken Dunn ’66

Saint Mary’s High School
“As a proud graduate of the class of ‘79, I look back upon my four years at St. Mary’s as some of the happiest and most rewarding times in my life. St Mary’s, through the Marist Brothers, taught me how to give. Back then it was the treasure of time we gave with trips to orphanages, senior citizen homes, canned food drives and many other opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others.”

’69 Alumnus reconnects in Georgetown
James A. D’Orta, MD ’69 reconnected with St. Mary’s a few years ago when he came back to participate on a career panel for Seniors. Following the panel discussion, Dr. D’Orta took a tour of Marist Hall, had a wonderful visit with Bro. Kenneth Robert, and even stopped to see his old locker. While he was here, Dr. D’Orta fondly recalled the community service projects in which he participated as a student. In fact, service was so important to him, that Dr. D’Orta founded CONTACT, the school’s community service organization at the time. He attributes his experience of service at St. Mary’s to his decision to follow a career in medicine. Dr. D’Orta’s wonderful kindness continued last spring when he opened his historic Georgetown home to alumni and friends living in the Washington DC and Virginia area. Over 50 people attended this first regional event on April 14, 2011. They reconnected with old friends, identified new St. Mary’s connections and confirmed why they are so proud of their St. Mary’s education.
President Grace Cavallo said, “We are always looking for opportunities to share the St. Mary’s story. I am so grateful to Jim D’Orta for this truly special gift.”

Saint Mary’s High School
community relations
For two consecutive years, the Knights of Columbus Father William A. Daly, S.J. Council 2122 has made generous $10,000 gifts to provide tuition assistance to St. Mary’s High School students. As tuition assistance becomes a more immediate and critical need, the Knights committed to investing in the education of a student whose education would otherwise have been interrupted by financial hardship. Past Grand Knights, Ted Newkirk and Jim Cunningham agreed, “We wanted to invest in something that was directly connected to the parish community, and we wanted to make a difference in the life of a young person.” The gift was funded through the Knights’ Nativity magnet program which sold over 40,000 “Keep Christ in Christmas” magnets in 2009. Past Grand Knight, Ted Newkirk presented the 2011 check to President, Grace Cavallo, at a recent OktoberFest. Photo courtesy of the Knights of Columbus.

President’s Report on Annual Giving | 27
“I give back to St. Mary’s to honor my parent’s, Alice and Frank Coughlin, and their hard work and commitment to send four sons to the school. I give because I received a great education that prepared me well for college. I give to pay tribute to the many enduring friendships made at St. Mary’s that will last for my entire life. I give because it was an honor to wear the blue and white on the basketball court, and the lacrosse field. I give because it is important that Saint Mary’s remains vibrant in its mission of providing a great education, while instilling strong Christian values in its students.”
