President Suzanne Shipley

It is my pleasure to take a moment to highlight how your contributions have led to exciting gains for Shepherd University over the 2013-14 academic year. With your help, we have laid the groundwork for a stronger, more self-reliant future. We started the year by opening our center in Martinsburg. This state-of-the-art facility was built to meet the needs of working adults with technologically advanced classrooms and comfortable spaces for learning and gathering. Equally as important, the academic programs that we offer support the needs of busi-nesses along the I-81 corridor, and the combination of high quality education, first-rate customer service, and economically relevant programming has resulted in first-year benchmarks for the Martinsburg Center being exceeded.

In the same spirit of providing students opportunities to grow with the changing needs of the community, we took the first steps toward the development of Shepherd’s first doctoral program, a doctorate of nursing practice (D.N.P.). While there is still a significant amount of work to do, the implementation of this program will represent an important milestone in Shepherd’s history, and one that could not have been accomplished without the synergy that comes from the community working in concert.

On another front, and with special thanks to the Leadership Circle, we were able to begin the process of reinvesting in our business programs. We are fortunate to have professional programs that produce many of the region’s most successful business and community leaders. Building on the work of the faculty to reinvigo-rate our liberal arts core curriculum, it is now time to turn our attention to our professional majors. This effort will be doubly important as we work to imple-ment the McMillan Family International Initiatives, especially in the recruit-ment of international students who are interested in professional preparation.

I mention these three initiatives among all the gains made throughout the year because they are such strong symbols of your support. Each of the initiatives I mention above moved forward because talented people like you saw their worth and invested by advocating on campus and in the community for their progres-sion. You worked on committees, communicated with the HEPC, worked with our representatives, and talked to your neighbors about the need for support. As if that were not enough, you contributed financially, thereby assuring that Shepherd would succeed. In the following pages you will see the direct impact of your gifts on students and on the university. To all of you who gave, I extend thanks on behalf of this wonderful place called Shepherd.

Sincerely,

Suzanne ShipleyPresident

SU named Best in Southeast for eighth yearFor the eighth year, Shepherd University was named one of the best colleges and universi-ties in the southeast according to the Princeton Review’s website. The New York City-based education services company selected Shepherd as one of 138 institutions it recommends in its Best in the Southeast website feature titled 2014 Best Colleges Region by Region. The schools selected for the Princeton Review’s website section were rated in six categories: aca-demics, admissions selectivity, financial aid, fire safety, quality of life, and green.

Kamenica gives 141st Commencement addressThe 141st Commencement address was given by Dr. Emir Kamenica, professor of economics at the University of Chicago, who came to the U.S. as a 15-year-old refugee after his father was assassinated by Serbian forces in the former Yugoslavia. Baccalaureate degrees were awarded to 810 undergradu-ates, and master’s degrees were awarded to 70 grad students at the ceremony held May 10, 2014.

Leadership Circle funds business program reviewThe Leadership Circle ended its charter year with more than 60 members. The Leader-ship Circle helped launch the university’s initiative to increase the stature of the business program by funding the involvement of two internationally recognized experts in business program development—Randy Boxx and Jerry Trapnell—to help define the next steps for increasing the program’s competitiveness. After conducting an extensive review of docu-ments and data that included reaccreditation processes and strategic plans, they met with internal and external groups, including faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni, and community leaders to obtain additional information. The resulting report is a five-phase plan to change the structure, strengthen the resource base, and adopt curricular changes.

SU and BRCTC sign articulation agreementShepherd University and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College established several articulation agreements in education, nursing, and credit-for-experience degrees (Blue Ridge CTC’s Board of Governor’s A.A.S. degree to Shepherd’s Regents Bachelor of Arts degree). President Suzanne Shipley and Blue Ridge CTC President Peter Checkovich signed the agreements June 30, 2014 in a ceremony at Blue Ridge CTC.

Student Affairs named a Promising Place to WorkShepherd University was one of 31 institutions named a Promising Place to Work in Student Affairs (PPWSA) 2014 by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine. The PPWSA national study, a collaborative project between ACPA and Diverse magazine, was conducted by the Center for Inclusion, Diversity, and Academic Success (iDEAS) in the College of Education and Human Ecology at Ohio State University. Shepherd’s Office of Student Affairs supports the univer-sity’s mission and core values through promoting student learning, engagement, success, service, and satisfaction through services, programs, and functions. It has 27 depart-ments, functions, and units.

McMillans establish international initiativeBob and Tia McMillan know the power of unre-stricted giving. Both have served on the Shepherd University Board of Gov-ernors and understand that unrestricted gifts allow Shepherd to respond to opportunities that enhance the strength of Shepherd. They expressed their com-mitment to Shepherd by becoming charter members of the Leadership Circle. This year their unrestricted gift was put to work funding the McMillan Family International Initiative. With the McMillans’ support, Shepherd is now poised to take advantage of a new enrollment market while strengthening the educational experience for all students by providing increased exposure to other cultures and perspectives.

Shipley is serving as COPLAC presidentPresident Suzanne Shipley is serving as president of COPLAC (Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges). It was her leader-ship that led Shepherd to apply for membership in the organization in 2009. COPLAC membership includes just 28 public liberal arts colleges.

Opposite page: Held every other year, the President’s Reception for Donors and Scholars gives President Suzanne Shipley the oppor tunity to meet the students and faculty who have benefited from scholarships and awards created through the Shepherd University Foundation, as well as providing scholars the chance to meet their sponsors. At this year’s reception, President Shipley visited with Foundation scholars and their families, including Richard Cordor of Mar tinsburg, recipient of the Ralph and Margaret Burkhar t General Memorial Scholarship, the Frada Fine Memorial Scholarship, and the Storer College Scholarship. A junior at Shep-herd, Richard hopes to attend medical school after he graduates. Though not sure yet which field of medicine he’d like to pursue, he admits to a strong interest in anesthesiology. For now, however, he’s happy to enjoy the oppor tunities Shepherd has to offer. “It was an honor to have met President Shipley,” he said of his experience at the President’s Reception for Donors and Scholars. He added that the many alumni, faculty, and board directors in attendance made him feel welcome as well.

Thank you for your generosity and dedication to Shepherd Uni-versity. The following lists are a compilation of all donors who made gifts or commitments to the university during the 2013-14 year. Great care was taken when preparing the Honor Roll of Donors. If there are corrections to be made, please contact the Shepherd University Foundation at 304-876-5195 or by email to [email protected].

Above: This year the Women for Shepherd University continued their mission to create a sense of community for women to connect and build relationships by establishing Women Investing in Shepherd (WISH). Using a one-woman, one-vote process, this women’s giving circle sponsored by the Shepherd University Foundation invites women to make an annual charitable contribution of $500 to be placed into a grant fund, which is divided into two equal pools. One pool will provide an award for Shepherd University campus-centered academic, athletic, cultural, or community service learning programs, while the other will provide an award in suppor t of programs for education, health and wellness, ar ts and culture, environ-ment, and community and family for nonprofits in the greater regional community. This inspired group is holding a series of social gatherings to educate and recruit alumnae and friends in the Shepherd community. Pictured at one gathering are WISH members and prospective members (clockwise from left): Dolores Lowe, Peachy Staley ’70, Liz Oates, Sarah Metzbower, Bev Hughes ’71, Carolyn Fleenor ’78, Sue Mentzer-Blair ’70, Sara Lueck ’67, Lois Pierce, Shirley Wiltshire ’64, and Shirley Derr. For more information about how to become involved with WISH or to receive an invitation to a social, please contact Meg Peterson at 304-876-5021 or [email protected].

Right: Baley Loy, of Rippon, is a senior biology major and recipient of the Captain Charles N.G. Hendrix Memorial Scholarship. Captain Hendrix is the late husband of the late Jessie Hendrix, a longtime officer and member of the Shepherd University Foundation Board of Directors, and the father of Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix ’74, a biology alumna. Mary is an inter-nationally renowned medical researcher and currently serves as president and scientific director for the Ann and Rober t H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Research Center at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Captain Hendrix served with distinction as an instructor at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. When he passed away, his wife and daughter established this scholarship in his name to commemorate his devotion to the pursuit of higher educa-tion. It is designated for students pursuing a degree in the field of pre-med or related fields of research. Having taken organic chemistry courses and performed her summer research with assistant chemistry professor Dr. Jordan Mader, Baley proved to be an exceptional student. “Baley showed an innate understanding of how molecules react and was especially astute at applying course material to the lab por tion of class,” says Dr. Mader. “She is a joy to work with both in and out of the classroom.”

Right: A dedicated member of the Shepherd University alumni community, John Reynolds ’64 is the creator of three funds through the Shepherd University Foundation. In addition, he recently retired from service as a member of its board of directors. John’s philanthropic spirit was initially inspired by his aunt and uncle, Charles and Sarah Reynolds Eber t, who offered him an affordable housing arrangement when he first moved to Washington, D.C., to take a job with the federal government. He established the Charles David and Sarah Reynolds Eber t Memorial Scholarship in commemo-ration of their generosity. John later created the Thomas Guy Reynolds Endowed Scholarship in honor of his father, T. Guy Reynolds ’33, also a Shepherd alumnus. In 2010, he established the John T. Reynolds Endowed Chair in Chemistry (deferred) to help recruit, recognize, and retain outstanding faculty for Shepherd’s chemistry depar tment. Having earned his degree in chemistry at Shepherd, John briefly taught high school before joining the CIA, where he had a long and successful career as an intelligence officer. With his latest gift, made through a bequest in his will, John joined the Joseph P. McMurran Society, a special group of donors who have made the choice to provide for the future of Shepherd University through an estate or other planned gift. Pictured at the 2014 Joseph P. McMurran Society dinner reception, John is a regular attendee of this annual event that honors society members and their guests.

Left: After graduating from Shepherd, Karl Wolf ’70 went on to enjoy a long and fulfilling career with his alma mater. He served as director of admissions from 1970 through 2004, at which time he was named director of athletics. In 2009, he became the assistant to the vice president for academic affairs for com-pliance and athletic initiatives, a position he held until his retirement in 2013. Having served as advisor to Lambda Chi Alpha, he created a deferred scholarship in its name in the hopes that other fraternity alumni might contribute toward the scholarship. “It’s a very good organization that stresses brotherhood, leader-ship, scholarship, and community service,” said Karl of the fraternity. Karl also created deferred endowments to suppor t scholarships for new and emerging spor ts and general athletics, as well as a general fund for university initiatives. Additionally, he has served as a long-time member of the Foundation’s board of directors, as well as its executive committee. He is a char ter member of the Joseph P. McMurran Society and often acts as a host at the organization’s annual dinner reception to honor members and their guests. While Karl’s presence is cer tainly missed during the day-to-day activities of campus life, his strong work ethic, civic involvement, and philanthropic spirit over the decades has ensured that his legacy will live on at Shepherd. Right: Charles H. Woodward ’59, associate professor emeritus of biology, was a highly respected professor of biology and science education at Shepherd for more than 30 years. When he retired in 1998, several of his students and colleagues in the Biology and Nursing Depar tments established the Charles Woodward Scholarship in his honor. The award is designated for students majoring in biology, science education, pre-medicine, or nursing, like those whom Charles enjoyed mentoring during his tenure at Shepherd. Charles’ alma mater and former employer continues to maintain a special place in his hear t – he is pictured here enjoying the annual Emeritus Club luncheon in May with his wife, Peggy.

Left: As a business administration major, senior Morgan Grega, of Charles Town, is one of several students to benefit from the scholarship awards established through the Rural Fi-nancial Planning Project (RFPP). Suppor ting Shepherd’s business program with a concentra-tion in financial planning, the RFPP strives to improve the lives of rural Americans through the promotion of financial literacy and the delivery of financial planning by well-trained and ethical financial planning professionals. The RFPP is committed to providing mentoring and internships, scholarships for students, and professional development oppor tunities for faculty. As a result, four named funds have been created through the program, including the Rob and Mary Logan Hoxton Scholarship, the John and Lisa Wolff Scholarship, the National Capital Area Chapter–Financial Planning Association Scholarship, and the Rural Financial Planning Scholarship. Now in their third year of distribution, these annual scholarship awards have already helped several Shepherd students, including Morgan, who received the Rob and Mary Logan Hoxton Scholarship during the 2013-14 academic year. Morgan is an active member of Shepherd University’s Financial Planning Club, for which she serves as treasurer. She will graduate in December 2014. “Receiving this scholarship through the Rural Financial Planning Project has made it easier for me to focus on my classes and have more time to devote to the Financial Plan-ning Club without having to worry about working,” said Morgan. “I highly appreciate it!”

Above: Donald L. Myers ’68 was a remarkable man whose role as CFO, vice president, and treasurer at American University made an impact on the lives of many. Don man-aged finances at the nor thwest Washington, D.C., university since 1982. The Washington Business Journal presented him with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, recogniz-ing his career in finance and his role as the architect of American University’s financial infrastructure and strategy. A prominent Shepherd alumnus, he created the Donald L. Myers Scholarship Endowment in suppor t of business administration, economics, and accounting students. When he succumbed to cancer in January 2014, Don left behind a great legacy in the field of higher education. Don’s wife, Margie Bryant, said, “Don was a first-generation college graduate who fully appreciated the life-changing value of a Shepherd degree. This scholarship in his name will honor his values and the life he devoted to his family and higher education”

Left: Susan Mentzer-Blair ’72 is an active and involved alumna of Shepherd University. As members of the Joseph P. McMur-ran Society, she and her husband, Bill Blair, regularly attend the society’s annual dinner reception. Sue also serves on the Shepherd University Foundation board of directors and is a member of the Women for Shepherd University’s planning committee, as well as a founding member of its recently created women’s giving circle, Women Investing in Shepherd (WISH). This past year Sue spoke with passion at the 2013 President’s Reception for Donors and Scholars about her role as executrix of the estate of her cousin, Jo Ann Mentzer ’60, who passed away in August 2013. Sue was instrumental in fulfill-ing her cousin’s wish to establish the Jo Ann Mentzer Scholarship for elementary education majors. Jo Ann commuted to Shepherd during her college years from Mar tinsburg, where she lived with her parents. Staying close to home and never marrying, she spent a fulfilling career teaching in Berkeley County Public Schools, touched by the many children who passed through her life and classroom. Sue credits Jo Ann’s experience at Shepherd for opening the door to oppor tunities that would not have awaited her had she not attended college. “JoAnn’s horizons changed spectacularly because of her time at Shepherd,” said Sue. “It made the difference between her going to work at the neighborhood five-and-dime or becoming a professional working woman.”

Right: Priya Arumugnathan is a senior from Shepherdstown and the recipient of three Foundation scholarships, includ-ing the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship, the BB&T Wealth Management Lacy I. Rice, Sr. Endowed Scholarship, and the Helen and Alber t Alvarez Memorial Scholarship. The latter was established by Ramon A. Alvarez ’62, former president and current vice president of the Shepherd University Foundation, and his wife, Mary, in memory of his parents. While neither Alber t nor Helen was able to attend college, they both stressed the value of obtaining a higher education. The inspiration behind the award is befitting of Priya, a biology major on a pre-med track, who said, “Being a college stu-dent in general comes with many stressors. I’m so grateful that, with the help of these scholarships, financing my education is not something I have to worry about as well!”

Above: The Joseph P. McMurran Society is composed of a special group of alumni and friends who have chosen to share their lifelong financial achievements with Shepherd University through estate and other planned gifts. Each spring, they are honored at the society’s annual dinner reception hosted by President Suzanne Shipley and the Shepherd University Foundation. Erdem and Joan Ergin (left) and Dennis and Anne Small ’67 attended this year’s event, held on April 26 in the atrium of Erma Ora Byrd Hall which overlooks East Campus, where guests enjoyed a four-course meal prepared by Chef Scott Anderson and Shepherd University Catering. Erdem established the Carole Ergin Scholarship in memory of his late wife, a social worker and community activist who taught at Shepherd for six years. Anne is a founding member of the Women for Shepherd University’s annual giving circle, Women Investing in Shepherd (WISH) and has included her alma mater in her estate plans.
