Class of 2014 Makes NCL Sunnyside History

Where has 6 years gone? The first class to complete a full 6 years as Sunnyside

Chapter Ticktockers. You were there at the start of something special and have

helped set the standard for all future Ticktocker classes. You are a wonderful

group of beautiful young ladies. So many experiences over the past 6 years,

facials, self defense classes, floating down the Clackamas River, and hair nets at

the Oregon Food Bank. I know each and everyone of you has so much to

offer. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. It has been an honor to

watch you grow and change over the past 6 years.

NEW THEME FOR NCL SUNNYSIDE CHAPTER!NEW THEME FOR NCL SUNNYSIDE CHAPTER!NEW THEME FOR NCL SUNNYSIDE CHAPTER!

The definition of purpose is: the reason for which something is done or created or for which something ex-

ists. Why do we do what we do? What is our purpose? NCL give us opportunities that can help us find our

purpose, which ultimately can give us great joy. Roses the Riveter represents taking on new challenges as

the women did during World War II. The theme Women of Purpose and the Rosie the Riveter image repre-

sent taking on new challenges and opportunities with the intent of finding personal purpose.

NCL Shapes The Future of Our Ticktockers

NCL is so much more than I originally thought

my daughter and I signed up for…and I mean

that in the best of ways! Having professionals

come talk to us about the college selection proc-

ess was extremely helpful and truly made a differ-

ence on how we went about applying to colleges.

Also I believe the letter of recommendation from

Julie Harvey, VP of Ticktockers, in regards to Ky-

lie’s involvement with NCL & the number of

hours she volunteered, played an integral part in the colleges she was ac-

cepted to and the scholarships she received. Without a doubt, it ultimately

opened up the possibility to attend schools that would have previously been

unattainable.

NCL Sunnyside chapter is thrilled to announce the Children’s Book Bank as our newest

philanthropy partner. The Children’s Book Bank (“CBB”) is a grassroots organization that

was founded just five years ago by a former Teach for America math teacher. It strives to

improve the literacy skills of low-income children by giving them books of their own be-

fore they reach kindergarten. To do this, The Children's Book Bank collects, repairs, and packages used books

which are then made available to low-income families in need in the Portland area - free of charge. The CBB

seeks to encourage family reading in low-income households and is committed to being a source for free "read

aloud" books. Early exposure to books is so important to developing prerequisite literacy skills and studies have

shown that strong reading skills correlate highly with later school success. Board books, picture books, alphabet

books, books about numbers, colors, animals, shapes and words, story books, rhyming books, Dr. Seuss books,

and books in Spanish are greatly needed and early chapter books are welcome. NCL’s main focus of assistance

with CBB will start with book cleaning. Every year the CBB helps clean and repair the thousands of books that get

donated ready for their new homes by erasing scribbles, wiping covers, and taping torn pages. If you would like

to read more about this new philanthropy, please visit their web page at:: www.childrensbookbank.org

Mission statement: The Children’s Book Bank envisions a society in which all children, regardless of means, are

surrounded by and experience books during their early years of development..

LASER TAG—What a Blast!

Ticktocker Council hosted the 2014 Laser Tag Night and Potluck on Friday May 30th

from 7:00-9:00p.m. Crossfire

LaserTag provided the equipment including laser tag blasters, “bunkers” to hide behind in the arena, referees and

the sound system. Ticktockers and Patronesses all got into the action and due to the fabulous turnout and support

from the NCL community we will be making a donation of $150 to the Clackamas River Basin Council to support

cleanup activities on the river this summer.

The 6th Annual Sunnyside Mother-Daughter Spring Tea and Awards Ceremony was held on Sunday

afternoon, May 18th, at the Monarch Hotel. This year's theme was "Changing for Good", represented

by the metamorphosis that results in butterflies. We honored our 17 graduating Senior Ticktockers

with a flower presentation, video tributes from their mothers, as well as written tributes displayed

around the room under bell jars. As is traditional at our NCL Spring Tea, we noted some of the out-

standing accomplishments of Patronesses and Ticktockers. Highlights of the event included the mov-

ing, and sometimes hilarious, videos. The crowd favorite may well have been The Princess video cre-

ated by the fabulous class of 2014. Decorations at the event used the butterfly motif, and included

photo montages, the bell-jars displays, and china serving tiers on the tables. Mother-Daughter photos

were taken during the reception, prior to the main program.

Helping Feed Our Neighbors Through The Oregon Food Bank

The Oregon Food Bank works to eliminate the root causes of hunger

through advocacy, nutrition education, garden education and through

working with communities to strengthen local food systems. In 2012-

2013, the OFB statewide network of regional food banks distrib-

uted more than 1 million emergency food boxes and 3.9-million emer-

gency meals were served at local soup kitchens and shelters.

As a NCL Sunnyside volunteer at OFB, you are making a difference in

lives every day by helping those in need. There are many ways to volunteer with the NCL Sunnyside Group or as

an Individual including: repacking bulk donations for use in food boxes distribution, helping with the OFB learn-

ing garden "Dig In!" and even helping collect food donations at the Waterfront Blues Festival over 4th of

July weekend. Every effort is appreciated! Our next NCL Sunnyside group opportunities at OFB are Saturday,

June 14 and 28 and July 12 from 1:00-3:30pm. Also there are now weekday opportunities with the first being on

July 15 from 6:00-8:30pm, Please sign up on the NCL calendar. Hope to see you there!

Our chapter hosted a very successful District 13 Spring

Training on March, 15th. It was the largest District 13

Spring Training ever held with over 150 participants with all

9 chapters represented. Our chapter was well represented

with all our new board members attending and Grade

Level Advisors from each class. The theme "Always Look at

the Sunnyside of Life" was well received and all participants

were very impressed with the welcome video. You can view

the video on our chapter web home page.

I received the following note of thanks from a Kathy Ander-

son a District Specialist that attended the meetings: "What a Great Day!! Best Spring Training to Date! Sunnyside –

YOU ROCK!!! Thank you to your Chapter for facilitating a wonderful atmosphere! The decorations, food, and that

video – just amazing!"

NCL National theme for the year is "The Year of the Ticktocker". They have been surveying Ticktockers and GLA's

and have really tried to roll out a new set of programs that can will help GLA's and will connect with the Ticktockers.

The success of this event was a total chapter effort and I want to thank everyone who participated. A special thank

you to the Spring Training committee Mylissa Azorr, Annie Le, Donna OKeefe and Andrea Scott. Also many thanks to

everyone who volunteered to help create the video, make decorations and volunteered at the event.
