Speech By Dr Su Guaning, President, NTU, at NTUAlumni Day 2004 — Ties That Bind on 27 November2004 At Nanyang Technological University

Members of the NTU Alumni family, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome all ofyou back to campus for Alumni Day 2004.

Things are moving in NTU.The TIMES Higher Education

Supplement recently published the first everWorld University Rankings. It created quitea stir in academic circles. Although numerousprevious ranking tables have been publishedfor various parts of the world, particularlyfor the United States, this is the firstcomprehensive ranking of universities donefor the whole world.

NTU came in at 50th position, rankedabove many well-known names such as DukeUniversity, Purdue University, BrownUniversity, and Tsinghua University. All ofus in academic circles know that rankingsare quite imperfect measures of the standingof a university and have to be taken with apinch of salt. We are certainly not about togloat or to think we are superior to thefamous universities I mentioned. We aregratified to learn that the high position ofNTU came with a strong showing in the peerreview score.

This confirms my own anecdotal evidencethat our partner universities, among themtop ranked MIT, Stanford, Caltech andCornell, regard our academic staff and ourprogrammes with high respect.

All our alumni can be justifiably proudof this recognition and achievement.Singapore as a nation can be very proud forhaving produced two of the top 50 universitiesin the world, matching Hong Kong andSwitzerland. We are certainly not resting onour laurels. Much work lay ahead of us.

First, we are hard at work transformingourselves into a comprehensive university. Our three new schools are well on the wayto full operation. Preparations to take in ourpioneer students are well advanced.

Second, we are developing a holisticNew Undergraduate Experience that offersour undergraduates not just a wide rangeof choices in courses and modules, majorsand minors, but also offers them theopportunity to participate in team andgroup activities, build character and spirit,

and develop leadership qualities.Third, we are developing a seamless path

between research, inventions andentrepreneurship, paving the way for NTUto become a key driver of the new knowledgebased economy that Singapore is developinginto. NTU is set to climb further up the ranksin future years. But we are not going to chasethe tail of NUS. Instead we are charting ourown directions and developmental path. Onthe one hand, this offers Singapore studentsmore choice and diversity, and a richer highereducation scene. On the other hand, thisoffers us clear pathways to overtake.Universities are very complex communitiesof scholars, administrators and students. Weare holding our own in many areas againstNUS, and in some of them we are better. Butour competition is not NUS but out there inthe world at large. Both NTU and NUS woulddo well to keep our eyes on the ball and noton each other, for the benefit of Singaporeans.

This year, I am gratified to see atremendous attendance figure among ouralumni and their families, rising from 1500last year to 2600 this year. This bodes wellfor the future of alumni bonding with ouruniversity and for the future of the university. Our alumni are key stakeholders in thisinstitution. We are working on building theframework for a more united and strongeralumni body, as well as ways to engage thealumni better in the operations and visionof the university.

Six outstanding alumni are beingrecognized today for contributions to theuniversity and its relationship with thealumni. I look forward to seeing many moreof you helping bring us together for the benefitof future generations. We have appointed anew Director of Alumni Affairs, Mr Soon MinYam, who is a graduate of NanyangUniversity. This afternoon, we shall welcomeMinister of State Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, another alumna, as Guest of Honour for ourCarnival and Tree Planting ceremony.

Trees are being planted in many partsof the campus, not least in Yunnan Garden,to symbolise the university mission of

developing future leaders, or in Chinese,Among the trees we are

planting will be the ones, which seeds are , of Saga seeds to enhance theromantic atmosphere on campus. We arealso working with our alumni groups to setup an Alumni Council to unite all alumnigroups to work with the administration inadvancing the university standing.

Next year, the year 2005, will be the 50thyear since the founding of NanyangUniversity, our predecessor institution thatfirst planted the seeds of knowledge inYunnan Garden. It is also the year in whichall our three new schools, Humanities andSocial Sciences, Physical and MathematicalSciences, and Art, Design and Media, go intofull operation. It is a milestone year in thehistory of NTU.

The University will be embarking on ayear-long series of events to celebrate NTU's50th Anniversary. We shall celebrate thecolourful mosaic and tapestry that is the NTUof today, the talents of our students, theachievements of our professors, and therichness of campus life. We shall celebratethe history and legacy of our predecessorinstitutions, Nanyang University,Engineering, Accountancy, and Education. We shall celebrate the achievements of ouralumni going back 50 years to the foundingof Nanyang University, and highlight theircontributions to Singapore, the region andindeed the world.

Through these celebrations, the people ofSingapore will discover a gem of a university, set in a garden campus, full of life, learningand leadership opportunities, the choice ofthe discerning who want to be the difference, who want to lead, in the high technologyworld of tomorrow. We fully expect, in theyear 2015 when we celebrate our 60thAnniversary, that we will have climbedfurther up the league tables and done ouralumni and the people of Singapore proud.

I know I can count on your support aswe continue our drive to excel, as a GlobalUniversity of Excellence.

Thank you.

Nanyang TechnologicalUniversity’s (NTU) School ofComputer Engineering (SCE)is helping to design Vietnam’s

first virtual reality (VR) laboratory, whichwill be set up at the Vietnamese Academyof Science and Technology’s (VAST)Institute of Information Technology (IOIT).

A team of 10 NTU professors andresearchers has been working with theIOIT since January 2004 to design andset up the laboratory. The effort includeda week-long technical workshop in March2004 in Hanoi, during which NTUprofessors shared their research findingsin VR technology. NTU will continue tohave a role in the laboratory even after it

Says Assoc Prof Seah Hock Soon,Dean of NTU’s SCE, “Our school ispleased to share our expertise in virtualreality research and development withIOIT, whom we value as a researchpartner.”

“The working relationship betweenSCE and IOIT has been excellent and weare now finalizing details for a long-termcollaboration between SCE and the IOIT,which will take off after the opening ofthe virtual reality laboratory. Says Dr Le,“We are impressed with NTU’s reputationfor and expertise in virtual reality andaugmented virtual reality, and more sowith their willingness to share theirexpertise.”

School of Electrical and ElectronicEngineering (EEE) exploited videoprocessing technology to develop anintelligent surveillance system, which candetect and decide if a swimmer is in dangerof drowning, and sound an alert, all in fiveseconds or less. This was done togetherwith EEE students who have sincegraduated and Asst Prof Yau Wei Yun, thena researcher at EEE and now seconded tothe Institute of Infocomm Research.

Designed as an aid for lifeguards, particularly those monitoring crowdedpools, the system uses a real-time video

attention of the lifeguard while the camerafocuses on the swimmer in trouble, andrelays a real-time image to the monitorthus helping the lifeguard identify instantlyand exactly which swimmer is in dangerof drowning, even if the pool is packed withswimmers.

While such swimming pool surveillancesystems are not new, the version developedby the EEE team is unique in its design, for which a patent was filed in Singaporein 2002. Rigorous trials in swimming poolsput the false-alarm rate of the systemdeveloped by NTU at less than 3%. In fact, the ability of the system to “see”, “analyse”and make a decision, establishes it firmlyas a first for Singapore.

Assoc Prof Tan says there iscommercialisation potential and welcomesinterested parties to contact him. A Snapshot Of MemoriesBy Lam Seng YipNTU Buddhist Society Alumni Dinner ’04

t was a quiet Saturday evening on 4 Dec ‘04 and the settingwas that of an idyllic holiday resort. Children played at pool-slides amidst swaying palms and lush green view enjoyedfrom the cool comfort of luxurious sofa sets – the perfect setting

to meet up with old friends and enjoy a meal together. On the second floor of Yishun SAFRA Club, the

atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as gueststrolled in for the NTU Buddhist Society AlumniDinner – Snapshot. Oohs and aahs aboundedas old friends met and new additions wereintroduced.

At 7.45pm, the lights were dimmed andthe alumni were treated to a slide showtracing their undergraduate days with theBuddhist Society all the way from the 1980s.From the lens of manual analog cameras to autofocus cameras to digital cameras, history waspresented and memories relived. The first surprisefor the night were received with smiles and laughter asthe alumni found pictures of themselves and their familiestaken just outside the dinner hall shown in the slide show.

The dinner then switched gear as the music started to

The waiters and waitresseswere none other than the representatives of the Buddhist Societyand Alumni management committee. They brought with themanother surprise. The first “dish” of the night was a camera withparty poppers for each table.

After a short speech, the Alumni Vice President Mr. LimKien Chuan led the guests to kick off the dinner with the poppingof the party poppers. The rest of the night was filled with fun andlaughter as guests indulged themselves in goodfood, great company, wonderful games and fabulous lucky drawcontests. The free cameras came in handy for guests to capturethe happy moments.

The happiest person at the end of the day had to be Ms.Christina Kwok who bagged the grand prize – a DVD player!

Amongst of the memorable moments of the night includeslittle three-year-old Xinying who won a prize twice

her size – fortunately Daddy and Mummy cameto her rescue. Other surprises included three

alumni (including our Alumni President Mr.Toh Hong Seng) rushing to join the dinnermid-way from the airport.

As the dinner officially came to a close, the guests were reminded of the next comingevent on 18 Dec ’04 – the Open House cum

IMechEResearchCompetition

MPE Triumph in

For the second year running, the Andrew Fraser Prize has beenawarded to a postgraduate student from the School of Mechanicaland Production Engineering at NTU. The prize aims to recognise thework of researchers in the field of Mechanical Engineering and isawarded annually. From a pool of 24 research students from NTUand NUS, 6 students were selected for the final round of the competition. The entries came from fields as diverse as biomaterial processing, machining, operations research, and MEMS (Micro-Electrical-Mechanical-Systems).

In the final round, the students were required to submit a researchpaper and give a 20 minute presentation of their work. The competitionwas won by Mr Marcos, of NTU, for his presentation entitled:“'D2Frequency Dependent Electroosmotic Flow in a Closed EndRectangular Microchannel”'D3.

In his presentation, a novel usage of the electroosmosis principlein a mechanical actuator was demonstrated. Preliminary work toassess the feasibility of this actuator was presented. A US provisionalpatent has been filed based on this design.

Marcos is currently pursuing research in microfluidics towardsthe degree of Master of Engineering under the supervision of AssociateProfessor Ooi Kim Tiow and Assistant Professor Charles Yang Chun.

For more information, please contact:Mr MarcosTel: 6790 6174Email: [email protected]

In the field of BioMEMS, electroosmosis phenomena have alwaysbeen an integral part of its research due to its abundant applications. For instance, electroosmosis has been utilized widely as a powerfulpumping means to precisely transport and manipulate liquid samplesin microfluidic devices. In this work, an unconventional usage ofelectroosmosis principle in a mechanical actuator will bedemonstrated. In its simplest form, this actuator consists of anelectrolyte filled non-conductive microchannel with one end closedand another end acting as a piston. When an electric field is appliedtangentially along the channel, a high backpressure gradient isinduced along the channel, such that the piston end will be subjectedto a higher pressure and the closed end to a lower pressure. Toallow the piston to actuate, an alternating (AC) electric field can beemployed. This concept is not restricted to only applications inmicro systems but it can be extended to conventionally sizedenvironments. Preliminary work to assess the feasibility of thisactuator is presented in this paper.

This paper presents an analysis of the frequency dependentAC electroosmotic flow in closed-end rectangular microchannels, which is not only relevant to the development of the newmicroelectrophoretic approach but also provides insight into thedevelopment of a novel electrokinetic microactuator. Since themicrochannel is closed, the AC electroosmosis should have adifferent frequency response due to the superposition of the viscouswaves generated by the electroosmotic flow and the inducedcounter-flow. In the present study, the Navier-Stokes equationgoverning AC electroosmosis is solved analytically using theGreen’s function formulation in combination with a complex variableapproach. With the Debye-Hückel approximation, the electricaldouble layer potential distribution in the channel is obtained byanalytically solving the linearized two-dimensional Poisson-Boltzmannequation. The effects of frequency-dependent AC electric field onthe oscillating electroosmotic flow and the induced backpressuregradient are studied.

The results show that the AC electroosmotic flow is stronglydependent on the frequency of the applied sinusoidal electric field. Moreover, it is found that the induced back pressure increases withincreasing frequency of applied electric field or decreasing channelsize. It is concluded that such a phenomenon is a feasible proposalfor actuation applications.

Technopreneurship & InnovationProgram (TIP)Started in 2002, the 16-week full time TIP is designed to provideeach participant with a truly wholesome entrepreneurship learningexperience. It is modeled against the entire venture creationcycle by systematically imparting to participants the knowledge, the skills and the mindset - through “real life” applications andexperiences.

Besides classes at NTU, theTIP Program included1 week ofseminar sessions at Stanford University as well as corporate andstart-up visits atSilicon Valley, and a5-week immersion programatthe University of Washington (UW), Seattle USA.

The design of TIP curriculum is well supported by experientiallearning and the vital components of an entrepreneurshipecosystem (for both segments in Singapore and in US), whichinvolved interaction with entrepreneurs, mentors, innovators,intellectual-property attorneys, venture capitalists, privateinvestors, business leaders and relevant government agencies.

Before lessons begin, TIP participants are sent to OutwardBound School (OBS) to build strong team spirit. Based onparticipants’ feedback, the OBS experience bonded all of themtogether and further spurred them to leave their comfort zones,be resourceful and react quickly to adversity — the traits of asuccessful entrepreneur.

The collaboration with UW also provides TIP participants anexcellent opportunity to work more closely with US inventors. The work includes conducting in depth technology and intellectualproperty (IP) evaluations, and producing business plans basedon the inventions. These business plans will then be judged by~ 40 judges who are from venture capitalist and businesscommunities in US. In addition, an arrangement was also madewith UW for TIP graduates, who are interested, to exploit the IPwith new startups.

TIP offers only a maximum of 50 placements each year tomaintain the quality of interaction and the level of dynamism inthe learning process. The program has been well received. Since

Graduate Diploma Technopreneurship & Innovation Program 2005 (TIP 2005)

TIP has a unique pedagogy which employsthe following elements:1. Lessons are conducted by academics with venture experiences,

and practitioners e.g. venture capitalists, entrepreneurs andIntellectual Property lawyers.

2. Participants are encouraged to present their analysis on casestudies and team-based projects through role-play, skit or drama. Besides facts and figures, the learning derived also emphasizeon critical, creative and integrative thinking; teamwork; learningskills; and deep social awareness. For project work, teams areformed to consist of participants with different educationaldisciplines, cultural background and experiences.

3. Experiences of instructors and participants are brought into theclassroom to make learning more active, interactive and engaging.

4. Use of online business simulation game, aptly namedMarketplace . Teams invest electronic money to form companiesto compete in a new and fast-growing global computer industry.

5. Entrepreneurship ecosystem for participants to network with andto learn from business communities e.g. venture capitalists inSeattle, Silicon Valley and Stanford University, and locally inSingapore.

6. Business Plan Competition organized by UW for the TIP segmentin US, where participants gain through mentoring by leading USinventors and conducting in-depth technology evaluation.

7. Internship for TIP participants, upon graduation, with companiesin China, US and Singapore.
