After a belated snow attack it is nice to see spring on the hori- zon. It is also exciting to be a month away from the 1 st Annual SENH Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards ceremony. There were many qualified projects that have been submitted and will be judged by a panel of SENH members. I am looking forward to learning about the innovative and unique structures that our membership has championed over the last few years. This is a great opportunity for us all to celebrate our accom- plishments together. I presented at the Structural Engineering Institute conference this past month and was able to take the opportunity to net- work with other structural engineers and hear some great tech- nical presentations. One of the themes of the conference was to step outside our comfort zones and take pride in the fact that we are structural engineers. We get to design beautiful signa- ture structures that stand out on our landscape all over the world while having the tremen- dous responsibility to ensure public safety. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end as the producer of “Dream Big- Engineering Our World” played the trailer for this recently released national IMAX film. I was filled with awe and pride at what we as structural engi- neers have designed in the past and what we will surely design in the future, as we continue to innovate and push the limits of what is possible. So many of us our happy in our own little world of crunching numbers and designing, that we forget to pick our heads up and let other people know what great work we do. Because we are often not the “life of the party” type people, it is difficult for others to see what we do, especially young people that are looking into a career. We need to get involved in local STEM programs to get the word out that not only are structural engineers practical and smart, but we are creative problem solv- ers and we have fun! Our new awards program is a perfect opportunity to speak up and share with our peers and hopefully with others outside of our structural engineering world. Thank you to all of the firms that have submitted for these awards and to the awards committee for all of your hard work in setting up this program. On another note, I wanted to thank all of you for your support while I have served you as president over the last three years. I will be passing the torch to another member of the BOD this summer. It has been an exciting time of growth with great meeting topics and training, the formation of the YMG, online payments, and of course this awards program. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s efforts in accomplishing these goals. Seven years ago I reached out to a BOD member and asked if I could help out, and I am so thankful that I did, because it has been an awesome opportunity to serve such a great group of creative and inspiring structural engineers. I challenge each of you to give some thought to how you may be able to serve this group this year. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE RELATIVE TO THE STATE BUILDING CODE

The following bills have been retained in committee:

HB80 brings the state’s RSA’s relative to energy conservation in building construction into alignment with the state building code RSA’s.

HB92 which would update the state building code to the 2015 i-code has ended up in a study committee in the House. This is the same language from the bill that failed to pass in 2016.

If you are interested in participating in the Study Committee phase of this process in the House, contact the bills’ prima-ry sponsor:

Younger Members Group

The Younger Member Group successfully met with a number of UNH students for a resume boot-camp before the March meeting. Thanks to support from UNH professors and faculty, a healthy range of students from sophomores to graduate students were able to attend and get feedback about their resumes and perspective job opportunities. By all accounts, these students displayed a sincere interest in pursuing structural careers and (as a whole) showed an impressive under-standing of structural behavior through their coursework. Following such a productive event, it is our hope to continue these resume reviews in the future. YMG Trivia Night ~ The annual web-based trivia night is once again being presented by the national Young Members Group Support Committee. The SENH team will look to defend our championship title against the other east coast young member groups. The event is scheduled for 6pm Thursday, May 11th at the Manchester office of Hoyle, Tanner & Associ-ates. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. Email [email protected] if you are interested in participating.

YMG Spring Event ~ Habitat for Humanity! We are joining with the Greater Manchester Habitat for Humanity for a volunteer day on Saturday June 17th on Lowell Street in Manchester and are looking for help from you! The overall project consists of renovat-ing a former duplex into a single family home for a family in need. Construction volunteers simply need to bring work boots (sorry no sandals) and clothes for the day. Lunch is being provid-ed by Habitat for Humanity, and a social hour will follow courte-sy of YMG. Anyone interested can please send an email to [email protected]!

Presentations

UNH Steel Bridge Team The team will be participating in the Northeast regional competition hosted by UConn and hopes to qualify for the na-tional completion in Oregon. The challenge is to design a 1:10 scale model of a 200ft-long bridge which needs to span a 7-ft “river”. The team’s design and approach aim to minimize the construction cost and the structure cost. The team is slated to finished fabrication in two days and begin practicing assembly. The team is contemplating flipping the bridge vertically as an approach to finish assembly quickly. Fundraising efforts are underway with spots on the team’s t-shirts available.

FEMA Flood Maps by Eric Maher, Esq. Eric provided a background for the development of the recently revised FEMA flood maps, which are meant to portray the 1% base flood elevation. The maps are intended to be referenced in zoning requirements, financing, and most im-portantly insurance as part of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). New maps have been developed from 2013 – 2017 at a cost to tax payers of $400 million per year. One model was utilized nationwide, which was based on the characteristics of the Pacific Ocean. Eric was quick to note that the Pacific Ocean is far from New Hampshire and that these models can be quite conservative. Eric reviewed the public comment period and municipals appeals process
