Know, go and extinguish fireFire is one of the dangers of natural
disasters. Mostly, fire outbreaks in hot anddry season. Fire preventive measures are tobe taken with a view to minimizing loss of lifeand property of people. Thus, all the peopleare to join hands with fire brigades fromtheir residential areas in carrying out firepreventive tasks.
The mission of Fire Brigade is to reducedanger of fire. Members of Fire Brigade aredynamically performing fire preventivemeasures and putting out of fire with theirmotto “quickly know, quickly go and quicklyput out the fire”.
Prompt action of Fire Brigade memberscan reduce volume of loss in outbreak of fire. The Fire Brigade must be equipped withenough hi-tech fire engines and combinedwith collaborative efforts of the people.
All the people from urban and ruralareas, factories and workshops and marketsare to take fire preventive measures. Allbuildings and residents are to be installedwith adequate fire extinguishers. Moreover, markets are to be facilitated with watertanks with over 10,000 gallons capacity, water pipelines and water taps. In addition, fire fighting groups are to be formed forchecking the markets systematically.
Over 50 per cent of outbreaks of firewere caused due to negligence of fire.Although authorities concerned giveeducative talks and supervise fire preventivemeasures, most of the people are weak inpractising fire prevention.
Not only members of fire brigade butalso the people are to dutifully makeconcerted efforts in taking prevention offire and putting out the fire. Only when thepeople strictly fol low fire preventivemeasures in accord with the Fire ServicesLaw, will both urban and rural areas befree from danger of fire.

Scientists set to study Pacific rimearthquake risks
WELLINGTON, 5 May—Portable seismographswill be installed at 900locations in NewZealand’s lower NorthIsland as part of a studyto help scientists betterunderstand earthquakehazards in the PacificRegion.
The miniature quakerecorders will be buriedat regular intervals, some just 100 metresapart, in a 100-km lineand scientists will thendetonate explosives indeep bore holes tomeasure the soundwaves being reflectedback from rock inter-faces deep under-ground.
The 21-day project, scheduled to begin on 2May, involves scientistsfrom Wellington-basedVictoria University, NewZealand Institute of
Geological and NuclearSciences GNS Science),Tokyo University andthe University ofSouthern California.
The study will focuson the boundarybetween the Pacific andAustralian tectonicplates that lie just 20 to30 km beneath thesouthern North Island.
Professor Tim Stern, from Victoria’s Instituteof Geophysics, said theproject was one of thelargest of its kind to becarried out in NewZealand.
“The seismographswill tell us about thethickness andmechanical state of rockunits beneath the seismicline down to depths of50 kilometres or more,”he said.
The data would helpbuild a high resolution
three-dimensional image of therock structures and the tectonicplate boundary in the region.
The project will be one ofthe biggest temporarydeployments of seismicequipment in New Zealand’shistory.
It will also be the first timethe boundary zone of the twotectonic plates under the regionaround New Zealand’s Capital,Wellington, has been studiedin such detail.

The company paid $10.7 billionlast June for the Africa business ofKuwaiti telecom operator Zain, vaulting the group into the ranks of theworld’s top five wireless players bysubscriber numbers.
But the costs of the acquisitionhave been mounting for Bharti as ithas been investing heavily in the loss-making firm since June and hasstruggled to integrate it into itsbusiness. ‘Superdrug’ could fight both HIV and MalariaWASHINGTON, 5 May—HIV, the
pandemic virus that causes AIDS, kills 2million people each year worldwide.Malaria, a pervasive parasite spread bymosquitoes, infects 225 million people andkills 781,000 annually. The former diseasehas ravaged our species since spreading tous from monkeys a mere 40 years ago; thelatter has been our enemy for so long, ourbodies have evolved ways to fight it. Thetwo killers, new and old, actually have afew molecular similarities. Because of thisand some brand-new research a single“superdrug” could soon fight both.
That drug is HIV protease inhibitor, amedicine that scientists designed specificallyto treat HIV by preventing the deadly virusfrom constructing its proteins correctly.“HIV protease inhibitors are in clinical usenow and are a leading HIV drug,” said
Photini Sinnis, head of the MedicalParasitology Laboratory at the NYULangone Medical Centre. “They havecompletely changed the face of HIVtreatment in recent years. People who takethese drugs don’t die of AIDS anymore.”
Proteases are enzymes that cut proteinsinto their correct shapes, allowing them tobecome active. HIV protease inhibitorsstop the HIV virus in its tracks bypreventing one of its protease enzymesfrom doing that job. Without the work ofthe protease, HIV proteins remain uncutand inactive, and so the HIV units, calledvirions, cannot assemble them to makenew virions. The body has naturalmechanisms for killing HIV virions, but it can only kill so many at a time;preventing the virus from replicatingkeeps the HIV cell population to a levelthat the body can handle.—Internet
CHICAGO, 5 May—Breast shields are the best way toprotect the breasts of women from radiation exposurewhile they have a chest CT examination, according toa new study. The researchers compared a breast shieldwith a new technique called posteriorly centered partialCT, in which the CT scanner turns on and off as it scansthe patient.
For each approach, the team at Penn State HersheyMedical Centre measured the radiation dose to the frontand back of an object called a breast phantom, whichmimics the size of the breast area of a woman. “Wefound that posteriorly centreed partial CT does decreaseskin entrance radiation dose to the breast by 16 percent, but increases overall radiation dose to the chest by 8percent,” lead author Dr Rafel Tappouni said in anAmerican Roentgen Ray Society news release.
“The bismuth breast shields, on the other hand, reduced skin entrance dose to the breast by 38 percentwithout an increase in overall radiation dose,” headded.—Internet

Honda adds 833,000 vehicles toairbag recall
DETROIT, 5 May—Honda Motor CoLtd expanded an earlier recall of Hondaand Acura vehicles over airbags thatcould deploy with too much pressure, causing injuries or fatalities, thecompany said.
The expanded recall adds more than833,000 vehicles for the model years2001 through 2003.
Some of these vehicles containreplacement airbags that could containthe defect. Honda is looking for 2,430replacement airbags that could containthe defect, but could not locate them all, leading to the large recall.
This is the fourth time Honda haswidened its airbag recall. The first recallrelated to this issue was in 2008.
The number of vehicles affectednow stands at 1.65 million, according tofigures reported to the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration.
These additional vehicles were not
included in earlier safety recalls becausethe original airbag modules on thedriver’s side were not affected by theissue. But replacement airbags couldcontain the defect, Honda said.
Honda told safety regulators thatjust 0.29 percent of the affected vehiclesare likely to contain the defect.
In certain vehicles, excess pressurecould cause the airbag inflator to rupture.Metal fragments could pass through theairbag cushion material causing injuryor even a fatality. A “small number” ofinjuries and two fatalities are linked tothe airbag recalls, Honda spokeswomanChristina Ra said. These were not recentand did not kick off this move, Ra said.
The recall includes some 2001 and2002 Accord and Civic sedans, 2002Odyssey minivans and 2002 and 2003CR-V crossover vehicles. It alsoincludes 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TLand 2003 3.2 CL vehicles.—Reuters

LONDON, 5 May—A recent study has found that people who play soccer computergames are more aggressive than those playing other violent games like war games. It explained that while participants remain ‘numb’ when they see someone being‘killed’ on screen, apparently harmless games that mirror real life can have a far greatereffect. Psychologists Simon Goodson and Sarah Pearson from the University ofHuddersfield have found stronger physical and emotional reactions among volunteersplaying football games than violent games. They conducted the study on 40 male andfemale participants who were asked to play either a violent video game or a footballgame.
They measured the heart rate, respiration and brain activity of the participantsbefore and during the game. The results showed that ‘killing’ someone in a gamecaused little brain activity, but conceding a goal or a foul, caused high levels of activity.“There is much concern over the effects of violent video games and how thesecontribute to general aggression. However, this research indicates that “killing”someone is not as “real” as playing a sport, and that the brain recognises this anddoesn’t react in the same way,” the Daily Mail quoted Goodson, as saying.—Internet

MEXICO CITY, 5 May—China has become one ofthe most important investors in Latin America andthe Caribbean accounting for almost 9 percent ofthe total investment flow to the region in 2010, theUnited Nations Economic Commission for LatinAmerica and the Caribbean (ECLAC) said onWednesday.
“In 2010 Chinese companies invested about 15billion US dollars in countries in Latin America andthe Caribbean, basically through mergers andacquisitions,” said the ECLAC in a new reportpublished here Wednesday.
It said that more than 90 percent of Chineseinvestments in Latin America have been used towardthe extraction of natural resources, especially inmining, but China is expected to start diversifyinginvestments into a lot of new areas in the years tocome.

The ECLAC said that the flows of investment isreinforcing the production of specialized items inthe region, but it did not provide any example ofthis.

ATLANTA, 5 May—Con-servationists say they arepleased with early efforts tokill rats on South Georgia,in what is the biggest rodenteradication campaign inhistory. No-one reallyknows how many ratsinhabit the island in theSouth Atlantic, but it couldbe millions. Introduced onthe ships of sealers andwhalers in the 19th and20th Centuries, the rodentshave had a devastatingimpact on local seabirdpopulations. But the layingof toxic bait in part of theisland seems to have hadsuccess. Some 50 tonnesof rodenticide were spreadby helicopters in Marchover a contained zonehemmed in by glaciers.
Subsequent inspec-tions on the ground foundonly dead rats. The killrepresented just the firstphase in the project, andcovered a mere 13% of therat-infested land area ofSouth Georgia. Nonethe-less, the South GeorgiaHeritage Trust says it hasbeen hugely encouragedby the results. "Prior to thebaiting, if you went out atnight, there were rats run-ning everywhere," ex-plained project leader Pro-fessor Tony Martin fromDundee University, UK.

SCIENCE DAILY, 5 May— Evolution is provid-ing the inspiration for University of Adelaide com-puter science research to find the best placement ofturbines to increase wind farm productivity.
Senior Lecturer Dr Frank Neumann, fromthe School of Computer Science, is using a "selectionof the fittest" step-by-step approach called "evolu-tionary algorithms" to optimise wind turbine place-ment. This takes into account wake effects, theminimum amount of land needed, wind factors andthe complex aerodynamics of wind turbines.
“Renewable energy is playing an increasingrole in the supply of energy worldwide and will helpmitigate climate change,” says Dr Neumann. “To furtherincrease the productivity of wind farms, we need toexploit methods that help to optimise their performance.”
