Hall of the Immortals

Communicators Hall of Fame

Living Hall of Fame

Carl Allen’s homebred Royal Troubador, winner of the 1990 Yonkers Trot, produced 1995 Horse of the Year, Hall of Famer CR Kay Suzie. In 1994 Allen (1929-2004) was voted Glen Garnsey Trainer of the Year and received the New Jersey USHWA Chapter’s Stanley Dancer Award in 1996. In 1997 he was inducted into the Florida Harness Racing Hall of Fame.

Living Horse Hall of Fame

This year’s nominees for the 2016 Living Horse Hall of Fame are Credit Winner, Mr Muscleman, Muscle Hill, Real Desire and Yankee Glide. Members, please complete and postmark your ballots by December 28, 2015!

Few in the industry can duplicate Jerry Connors’ memory of events in the sport of harness racing. A “jack of all trades,” Connors has worked at numerous racetracks and organizations throughout his career as a publicist and administrator. He has been an USHWA director for 23 years and is a licensed judge and track announcer.

David Carr joined the USTA as a publicist and staff writer for Hoof Beats magazine in 1982. Three years later, Carr proposed the creation of the information and research department, and developed it into a superb resource for those writing about the sport of harness racing by maintaining accurate and accessible data.

John Hervey wrote that Princess “unquestionably ranks among the greatest mares of trotting history.” The dam of foundation sire Happy Medium, Princess (1846-1877) is perhaps best known for her 1859 series of races against Immortal Flora Temple.

Exhibitry Traditionally, our Hall of Fame Weekend visitors are greeted with exciting new displays to enjoy and this year was no exception. Exhibits on view in time for our July celebration featured 2014 Horse of the Year JK She’salady, “Women in Racing Today,” “The Greyhound Collection: A Preview,” as well as our 2015 Hall of Fame Inductees. In addition, installations were created to highlight the Amateur Driver and to showcase our Harness Racing Americana Collection. Both the Carriage Room and Front Foyer became the setting for the colorful works of artist Lumen Martin Winter. Titled “The Spirit of the Horse,” this is the first museum presentation of Mr. Winter’s art since his death in 1982.

Charles Keller III’s Yankeeland Farm produced Hambletonian winners Muscles Yankee and Yankee Paco. Keller is a director a n d m e m b e r o f t h e E x e c u t i v e Committee of the Hambletonian Society. He was a director of the USTA for five terms and an active member of the Finance Committee. He is currently a trustee of the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame and a member of the Executive Committee.

Trainer-driver Bruce Nickells has developed champions for more than four decades. Associated with many top horses during his 70-year career, he has specialized in the developing of pacing fillies. For his management of Hall of Fame Immortal Miss Easy, Nickells was voted 1991 Glen Garnsey Trainer of the Year.

In October, the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame was honored with a peer-reviewed Award of Excellence presented by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN). The GHHN's Awards for Excellence program recognizes and commends exceptional efforts among its members. Awards are made to projects which exemplify creativity and professional vision, resulting in a contribution to the preservation and interpretation of the history, culture and diversity of the region. The Harness Racing Museum’s “Remember Roosevelt!” exhibit and accompanying publication, Roosevelt Raceway, the Dream & the Legacy, Where it All Began, were acknowledged for synthesizing historic preservation with visual public presentation. The outstanding exhibit and photo essay book grew from the Museum’s nearly decade-long Roosevelt Raceway Legacy Project which, aided by grant funding from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, cataloged and digitized thousands of photographs secured from the lost Long Island track. The Museum’s exhibition marries elements of artistic design, multi-media display and artifact presentation in a seamless layout carrying visitors from the Museum’s entrance to its main gallery.

Exhibitry Designer Judi McMahon and Collections Curator Rebecca Howard proudly display the Museum’s Greater Hudson Heritage Network’s Award of Excellence.

EDUCATION

Library Donations The Museum’s Peter D. Haughton Memorial Library received donations of books, videos, periodicals and sale catalogs from

Dana Bala, Larry DeVan, the Hambletonian Society, Hanover Shoe Farms, Gary Hermanson, Janet Holdeman,

Philip Sporn, the USTA, and Richard Winsche.

Stallion Auction The Museum’s Outreach and Winner’s Circle Gift Shop team also traveled the “grand circuit” in 2015. From the Meadowlands for the Hambletonian to Delaware, Ohio for the Little Brown Jug, the staff kept busy in August and September. Next on the calendar was Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs for the annual Grey Ghost and Poltergeist Pace on October 31st. From there it was off to Harrisburg for the 77th Annual Auction of the Standardbred Horse Sales November 2-6. Thank you to everyone who shopped or stopped to chat and to all the Museum team members who make these trips possible. Special thanks to all that give us a “hand” and show their support in Goshen or on the road including Big Dee’s Tack, Chuck Connor Stable, Marcia Faber, Kelly & Mark Ford, Fox Den Farm, Bud Hatfield, Dr. Garth Henry, Ray Schnittker Stable, Jennifer Starr and Thom Young.

Outreach We are lining up our roster of stallions for the 2016 breeding season. Over $640,000 has been raised for promotional and

educational services provided by the Museum from this unique fundraiser! We invite you to put your unused breedings to work for the benefit of all – the breeding donor, the mare owner, the

Museum and the stallion. If you have not participated in the past by donating a breeding or placing a bid and would like more

information, please contact Joanne at 845-294-6330 or [email protected].

The Museum successfully applied for a three year General Operating Support grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The Museum was also grateful to receive conservation funding from a NYSCA re-grant program administered by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network. Funding is supporting the care of a painting of the great Dexter, King of Trotters. The Historic Collections Department assisted in the return of the Museum’s Lunch & Lecture program, coordinating a presentation on artist Lumen Martin Winter in October and conducting an informative lecture on the history of our 1913 stable home in November. Thank you to all who supported this year’s Restoration Raffle, which raised $4,700 for collections care and conservation.

The Museum’s popular traveling exhibits continue to make the rounds. The “What is Harness Racing?” Poster Series was

displayed at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, Maryland in May. “A Drive to Win” made trips to the Pickaway County Fair

in Circleville, Ohio in June and to Rosecroft Raceway in October.

Traveling Exhibits

The Education Department continues to develop new programs for all members of our community, especially equine enthusiasts! For Scouts, in addition to our patch program, we now fill the requirements for badges, belt loops and pins for Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. For homeschooled children we expanded the selection of workshops, offering “Digestive System & Feeds,” “Color Theory with Currier & Ives,” “Equine Sculpture” and “Drawing Techniques and Perspective.” New topics booked for December include “A Muscular-Skeletal System Comparison,” “Equine Anatomy and Relief Sculpture” and “Painting Horses and Farmlands.” Participation in Education programs showed a considerable increase for October and November 2015 and numbers for booked events in December exceed the numbers from 2014. Plans for 2016 include workshops for horse-oriented youths including “Markings and Registration,” “A Perspective on Animal Communication” and “Equine Reproduction.” The Halloween workshop was a success with 31 children making a delightful herd of pot belly ponies out of pumpkins. A Youth Art Exhibit is being planned for late February. We participated in the Cornell 4-H Horse Fun Day, enjoying the opportunity to share our passion and enthusiasm for the Standardbred with over 100 young people and their families. Thanks to the Connor Stable, we had a wide assortment of tack to exhibit and discuss with attendees, along with a display of race shoes, a free raffle, a Buddy Pacer game and a beaded horseshoe necklace craft. The Museum was included as part of the Agri-Women tour and the Education and Collections Departments coupled for the Lunch and Lecture event “Currier & Ives and Adult Coloring” on Nov. 24th.

For her outstanding contributions to the promotion and preservation of Goshen Historic Track,

director Janet Terhune received the 2015 Amy Bull Crist Distinguished Service Award from the

USHWA Monticello-Goshen Chapter.

Just in the nick of time for Hall of Fame Day, work was completed on a brand-new stamped-concrete patio and drainage system in the Museum’s courtyard. Broken sections, frost heaving, poor drainage and uneven surfaces on the two old patios created safety issues and limited usable space. Installed by Evolution Stamped Concrete of Ellenville, NY, the new patio provides a uniform and aesthetic look to the courtyard and almost doubles the amount of space that can be used for our outdoor events.

Historic Collections received generous donations of photographs, tickets, programs, media guides, film, video and driving colors. Highlights included a Roosevelt Raceway flag; a wine funnel with inscription commemorating Gladys Harriman & Tassel Hanover’s record 1:57 4/5; paintings by Richard Botto, Sherman Raveson and Richard Stone Reeves; a vintage c.1955 tote machine; a wealth of Frank Ervin archival material; a plethora of postcards and pennants, and much more. Donors included Richard A. Botto, Jim Brooks, Mal Burroughs, Stacy Cahill, Tom Charters, Daniel Coon, Greg Coon, Lawrence S. DeVan, Marianne Doherty, Mary Lou Dondarski, Larry Drysdale, Kenneth Earle in name of father Lloyd A. Earle, Jay Farrar, Marjorie Northrop Friedman, Patricia Grant, the Hartline Family in memory of Donald Hartline, Carol Hodes, Lee Houghtaling, Alexander Katlan, Greg Magreta, Tom Moorman, Frank Musantry, Dominick Rosato, Joe Sbrocco, Sheri & Allan Schott, Jim Simpson, Richard Stone, Linda Toscano, Margaret & Bernie Taylor, Sue Van de Water, Judy Davis-Wilson and Frank Wiswall, Jr.
