The Rotary Club of Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia
Dear Fellow Rotarians:
I welcome this opportunity to congratulate and extend my best wishes to all the officers of your club elected to serve in 2001-02. Your fellow Rotarians have shown theirconfidence in choosing you to lead the club during the coming year. During 2001-02, I am asking all Rotarians to conduct the business of Rotary by working to meet theever-growing needs for Rotary service in our communities and our world. To accomplish this goal, it is essential that we continue to bring in new members, especially those individuals who are seeking a way to use their talents and experienceto help others.
This year, I would like you to help your club focus on the following key issues:
• Increasing Rotary’s membership by bringing in members and sponsoring new clubs;
• Undertaking new community service projects;
• Undertaking new international service projects; and
• Enhancing Rotary’s public image in the community and throughout the world
by your commitment to the business of Rotary.
Thank you for your commitment to your own Rotary club and to Rotary International. The dedication of Rotary clubs and individual Rotarians in support of these key issues will ensure a future for Rotary that is bright with possibilities. In declaring thatMankind Is Our Business, we are making a commitment to all of humanity - a commitment that will ultimately transform the lives of both those who needRotary’s humanitarian service and those of us who are privileged to offer it.
With warm regard.
Sincerely
Richard D KingRI President 2001-02
DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2001-02
Dr Low Teong
Dear Rotarians and Guests
Congratulations to President K C Chu and her team for the honour to lead the RotaryClub of Kelana Jaya during 2001-02.
What does Rotary mean to me ....I suppose it depends on whom you ask:
to some .... it’s a chance to runto some .... it’s a clean fresh cup of water.
to others a way to provide food for the familiesto some .... it’s a chance to learn a skill or a discipline
to others a way to experience a culture and its peopleto some ... it’s a way to make their community a better place to live
to others a way to improve the quality of life for all humanityto some ... it’s a way to live peaceably with their neighbours
to others a way to promote peace in the world.Rotary is a miracle as small as one tiny drop of vaccine in a child’s mouth and as
big as peace and prosperity for our planet.Personally, I think it requires an incredible investment of our time and energy that
offers unlimited returns. For the recipient it can be the promise of a future filled withhope; for the donor, the assurance of fulfilment and probability of grace.
While in this Rotary’s 85th year it is tempting to savour its rich and brilliant past; for most people Rotary is and will remain ....
a pathway to the future.
Past Rotary International Director Robert Cerwin
Are you a Rotarian? If you are not we would like to welcome you. Ask one of theRotarians on your table or in the hall.
You can join us to make the world a better place to live in because MANKIND IS OURBUSINESS .
Yours in Rotary

Welcome to the 11th installation of the President and Board of Directors of the RotaryClub of Kelana Jaya.
Rotary is foremost about service, and in the last twelve months, the club hasundertaken many worthwhile, beneficial projects. If the journey, rather than thedestination, is the reward, then it has been an exhilarating odyssey for me and I havebeen recompensed beyond measure. Whilst it is natural for the president, as the club’sfigurehead, to be credited with the club’s success, I can honestly say we would haveachieved nothing if not for the collective effort of all our members. For theirenthusiastic support of the club and Rotary, I offer my grateful thanks. We have triedto live up to our motto for 2000-01, CREATE AWARENESS, TAKE ACTION .
Leadership is nevertheless an essential quality if a club is to progress, and I know thatunder the presidency of K C Chu, we have a dynamic leader and the Rotary Club ofKelana Jaya is well poised to reach greater heights in service to the community.
Finally, let me thank all those involved in the organization of this evening’s function. They have invested considerable time and effort to make this Installation an enjoyableone. My sincere appreciation also to all our sponsors and other well wishers whosesupport is so important to us.
Yours sincerely

Dear Fellow Rotarians and Friends,
G reetings and a very warm Welcome! My deepest appreciation to our Guest- of- Honour,District Governor Dr Low Teong, First Lady Jackie, gracious guests, the OrganisingChairman and committee, each and everyone of you for your presence, support, andgenerous contributions.
The fantastic Past ‘Gentleman’ Presidents, with your support had once steered thisrelatively youthful Club through stormy seas. However for the past many years, like a sail boat we had cruised surely and steadily through in many of our endeavours. Of late, we often wanted, as at the sudden occurrence of a grave tempest, to change thehelmsman - to replace the pilot of the calm by the pilot of the storm. With this came theelection of the Club’s first ‘lady’ President. This is indeed a great privilege and honourfor me. With all your relentless support, my team and I will surely have a go, yes, we will have a go and hope to sail smoothly on with you by our side.
Our theme this year is aptly: MANKIND IS OUR BUSINESS .
In line with our theme, we plan to implement several new projects including twoMatching Grant Projects; to set up and equip an education/information centre toenable children on cancer treatment some form of continuation in education while in ahospital ward and to set up and equip a resource and training centre for carers andChildren with Special Needs to facilitate their social, educational and medicalmanagement at a teaching hospital. With the generous sponsorship of Pan MalaysianPools, we will continue our meaningful project; Klinik Kebajikan Rotary.
Lastly, may we always emulate the great tradition of our predecessors in joining handsand experience the joy of sharing Rotary with others. In this difficult financial climate,to be able to rise above our own personal trials and tribulations to serve mankind givesan even more profound meaning to Rotary and its cause.
Sincerely,
K C Chu PHF

It is with profound sincerity that my wife Lulu and I greet you on the occasion of yourinduction of officers for RY 2001-2002. Your fellow Rotarians have indicated theirconfidence in electing you to lead the club during this new Rotary Year.
The members of the club will always remember fondly, your club’s generosity in supporting our Matching Grant project which we called “You can see clearly now”.Definitely, all the beneficiaries are very grateful that they can now see with so much clarity.
Now that the torch of leadership has been passed on to President K C Chu, we are certain that the same kind of leadership, if not better, will make your clubstronger in line with Rotary International’s thrust for Membership Development. We have the distinction of having oneof the highest ratios of women Rotarians in our district.
We took several measures to increase membership. An articleon membership development appeared in every issue of ourweekly bulletin, The Shuttle. Guest Evenings were held on 24August and 15 June at which members invited guests toattend our meeting. In April, we formed a MembershipDevelopment sub-committee to look into ways and means ofincreasing our membership.
It is with re g ret that I re c o rd that a former member andpast president of the club, Alwin Daniel, passed away on 17July 2000.
ATTENDANCE
PP Lee Seng Tong was Attendance Chairman. The club’saverage attendance from July 2000 to May 2001 was 90%.This is again a re c o rd. Within the district, we were ranked 5thout of 57 clubs. High attendance is the sign of an active cluband this is one of the achievements we are most proud of.
For this year, we have 14 members who achieved 100%attendance. Our “One-Hundred Percenters” are:

ROTARY INFORMATION
Rotary information continued to be given out both duringour weekly meetings as well as in The Shuttle.
During Rotary Awareness Month in January, Rtn LynnAbdullah with assistance from President Leslie Yeapconducted a Rotary Quiz for the benefit of our members.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
There was an exhibition about Rotary and our club held in conjunction with the Sweet Charity children’s concertin September.
The club received considerable publicity in the press for its various projects. Copies of newspapers articles arereproduced separately under “RCKJ In The News” . This isprobably the most publicity our club has ever received in one
Rotary year.
News about our pro j e c t swas also regularly publishedin the District Govern o r’smonthly Newsletter.
In an attempt to raise theimage of our club among the public as well as toother Rotarians, our clubhas this year introduced aclub logo. “Kelana” is theroyal Malay headdress andour logo is a stylisedversion of it. In the samevein, we have this year
adopted a club t-shirt which we will wear to all our pro j e c t s .This will help us to maintain a sense of identity. By popularchoice, the t-shirt will be yellow.
GENERAL
Pre-PETS
One of the major undertakings by the club this year was to organise what is called the “Pre-PETS”. “PETS” is thePresident-elect Training Seminar and are held every year. Forthe first time this year, our District organised the Pre-PETS,two preliminary seminars for Presidents-elect. These wereheld on 26 to 27 August 2000 at the Eastin Hotel, PetalingJaya and from 17 to 18 March 2001 at the GoldcourseHotel, Klang. Presidents-elect from almost every one of the57 clubs in District 3300 attended. I had the honour of being the organising chairman for this project and thank

Donation by Aussino Malaysia Sdn Bhd
Aussino Malaysia, a company dealing in home furnishings, kindly agreed to donate part of the proceeds of its annual sale to our club. These funds will prove very helpful when we come to organise our 10th club anniversary in January2002, which it is hoped, will also be a membershipdevelopment event and an occasion when we can publiciseRotary to the public.
VOCATIONAL AWARDS
Rotary believes in the worthiness of all useful professions and occupations. In an attempt to recognise those who haverendered exemplary service in their occupations, the clubpresents its annual Vocational Awards. This year, the clubpresented two Vocational Awards to deserving people on 19October. The first recipient was Ms Janet Yeo, the founder ofthe National Stroke Association of Malaysia. Although shesuffered a stroke, she battled against the odds towardsrecovery and then formed this association to aid and supportother stroke victims.
The second award was given to Ms Santhara Devi, the DeputyD i rector of the Bethany Home in Teluk Intan. She has beenattached to the home for many years and has dedicated herlife towards the welfare of the children at the home.
FACTORY VISIT
A “Factory Visit” is a visit to a place of work. The purpose isto help us better understand how a particular business orindustry really operates. It does not have to be an actualfactory. On 14 April, several Rotarians visited the RubberResearch Institute Research Station in Sungei Buloh. We werebriefed on many aspects of the rubber industry. We had a
chance to see how bud grafting was done, as well as rubbertapping. After some refreshments, we visited the RRI’s factoryw h e re we learnt how rubber is pro c e s s e d . The highlight of thetrip was a visit to the International Rubber ProductsExhibition Centre. This is a very modern and high-techcentre which exhibits a vast range of rubber products.
After that, we visited a factory which manufactures acultured milk drink in Subang. We were briefed on thebenefits of the drink and then given a tour of the factory. Many Rotarians took the opportunity to purchase thedrinks. My thanks to Rtn Peggy Lee for organising thefactory visit.
VOCATIONAL SERVICE CASE STUDY
Rtn Manfred Faehndrich conducted the case study. The casestudy involved a hypothetical situation where an employerhas to deal with a long-serving employee whose skills werebecoming outdated. Rotarians discussed how the problempresented in the study could best be resolved so as to be fairto all concerned.

DISTRIBUTION OF THE 4-WAY TEST
The 4-Way Test is a benchmark whichRotarians use in their business andprofessional lives to guide their actions. In June, we made rulers printed with the 4-Way Test and distributed them tovarious schools, free of charge. My thanksto PP K W Wong for organising thisproject.
MICRO-CREDIT PROJECT FOR SINGLE MOTHERS
Although still at an early stage, the club is looking into the feasibility of carrying out a micro-credit lending project. The idea is to give small loans to single mothers so that they can start some useful employment from home. Many single mothers are unable to work because they are house-bound. Rtn Benjamin Quinones, who isprofessionally engaged in micro-credit financing, is in charge, and if the plan is workable, we hope to carry it outduring the next Rotary year.

SERVERotary is an international humanitarian service organization. The men and women of Rotaryare business and professional leaders who volunteer their time and resources to help others intheir local communities and throughout the world.
Rotary clubs carry out a variety of service projects that address critical issues including poverty, hunger, illiteracy, substance abuse, and pollution. Service to youth, especially children at risk, is a major emphasis. Working with and for tomorrow’s leaders, Rotary sponsors service clubs for youth and young adults and offers career development and mentoring programs.
INNOVATEWhere need exists, Rotary works to find solutions. Nonpolitical and nongovernmental, Rotaryclubs are autonomous and create innovative solutions to meet community needs.
Rotary members improve the quality of life through routine child immunization projects, medical and dental clinics, and the construction of safe water and sanitation systems. Clubs alsowork for peaceful communities by organizing violence-prevention projects.
Rotarians attack the problem of illiteracy through programs that strengthen primary, vocationaland adult education, and teacher training.
Whether standing at the forefront of an international health campaign or mounting a massiveliteracy initiative, Rotary rallies the toolsand know-how to successfully lead the way to change.
GIVERotary members dedicate their time, skills, expertise, and myriad other resources towardimproving the human condition.
Club members support international projects through the programs of The Rotary Foundation. The Foundation was created in 1917 for the purpose of doing good in the world, and issupported almost entirely by member contributions.
Organized by Rotary clubs in at least two countries, Rotary Foundation humanitarian grants support projects that provide healthcare and supplies, clean water, food, job training, and education — particularly in the developing world.
Large-scale Health, Hunger and Humanity(3-H) Grants support sustainable projects that helpothers help themselves.
Rotary members also contribute their technical expertise and compassion. Each year more than200 grants fund Rotary volunteers in 50 countries.
EXCHANGE
Rotary promotes cultural understanding and brings people together, even when they live worlds apart. Rotary’s exchange programs foster the free flow of ideas and opportunities across national borders.
Through Rotary, youth, scholars, and professionals experience the culture and people of anotherland — and return home to share their new understanding with others.
Some 7,000 secondary-school students participate annually in short- or long-term RotaryYouthExchanges.
The Rotary Foundation’s Ambassadorial Scholarships program is the world’s largest privatelyfunded international scholarships program. More than 30,000 students from 100 countries have studied abroad as Rotary scholars. The Group Study Exchange program pairs Rotarydistricts in different countries to send and receive non-Rotary study groups comprised of young professionals.
