FISHING NEWS UPDATE
It was the Friday night a week before Christmas.
“Do you really want to go to the Kootingal Bowling
Club for their raffles and members draw?” I said “I
would rather go fishing”.
So there I was fishing away without getting a bite.
At 7pm it was quite light but I had had enough so I
reeled my line in and when the bait, of live shrimp,
was about 6 inches under the surface a 40cm
Yellowbelly grabbed it. My only fish.
I was quite happy with it until I received a phone
call the next morning to gaily tell me that if we had been at the Club I would have heard my
membership number come out and we would have walked off with $1,300.
It was a very expensive Yellowbelly! (Tasted good on the barbie though)

BULLETIN EDITOR JANUARY 2016
Wishing you a Happy New Year from all of us to all our friends in Australian Lionsonoz, A
bit of “bragging” but we are extremely proud of family, 9 grandchildren, our 3 children, 2
son-in-laws and daughter-in-law.
We had a quiet January watching
the “grass Grow”. Stewart received
a rain guage in 2014 an he has got
into the swing of recording the rain we get. Boy did we
get plenty!!!
Stewart and I attended the Bungendore Country
Muster at the beginning of February. What a fantastic
week spent with good music, and good friends.
As you all will know by now, Stewart is transferring
back into a local club that he has been working with
while a member of Lionsonoz. He is missing the “face
to face” with other lions members although he has
really enjoyed his time in Lionsonoz and has made
many friends which he will keep in contact with. As I
am a member of Lionsonoz both of us will be attending Conventions and meeting up where and when ever
we can in our travels.
I also have a bag of ring pulls collected from my music club. I speak to a lot of people about the ring pulls and
they keep coming in to me from a number of people.
Thank you to those who have sent in items for the Bulletin, some articles have been held over until February
Bulletin.
Articles for the Bulletin to be emailed to Lion Marge Ollis by 7th of each month please.

Until next time, Regards Lion Marge

Secretary’s Report January 2016 – Lion Gwyneth Payne The next few months are reasonably busy with the Nominations and Election of the
Executive for 2016-2017 and getting ready for the Multiple District Convention for
those who are going.
The Nomination process is contained in the Constitution as below:
Nominations Committee: Article IX Section B of the Standard Form Club Constitution requires the Club President to appoint a Nominations Committee. The Club President is responsible for the appointment of a Nominations Committee during December/January of each year. This committee should comprise a small number of experienced Lions, preferably under the chairmanship of a past President. The task of the committee is to select at least one member of the Club to stand for each of the vacant positions for the forthcoming year and to ensure they are willing and able to take on the position for which they are to be nominated. If necessary, the committee must encourage newer members to stand for office. At the time of appointment of the committee it may be found to be helpful to circulate each member of the Club requesting their preferences for Club Office during the forthcoming year, and have members return that preference s to the Chairman of the Nomination committee. A clear distinction should be made between “Club Office” as defined by the Club Constitution and appointments that are the prerogative of the Club President. following his/her formal election-the nominations committee should only deal with elected positions. The committee must ensure that newer members receive adequate consideration and resist the temptation to renominate existing officers because “they know the job”. At the same time, the committee having regard to all the circumstances, should select the best member available for each position, remembering that there are excellent facilities for training in the majority of districts together with information support by way of manuals etc for President, Secretary and Treasurer. Nominations Committee Report The Committee should report to the President prior to the date of the Nominations meeting which should be held during February, submitting at least one name for each position. A commonly held misconception is that the committee may submit only one name for each position - this is not the case. Any number of suitable nominations may be submitted for each position by the committee if the Club so prefers. Alternatively, the Club may prefer that only a complete board selection is offered by the committee. Election Procedure – Nominations Meeting The Club Secretary must give 10 days’ formal written notice of the venue, date and time of the nominations Meeting to each pre paid-up member. It is strongly recommended that such notice should include a reminder that any paid up member is entitled to submit further nominations for any or all elected positions subject only to those nominated agreeing to serve; together with a list of those members nominated by the committee. The Nominations committee should not be seen as controlling the appointment of the officer bearers for the coming year and at all stages it should be clear to Club Members that alternative nominations are welcomed at the Nominations meeting. The task of the committee is solely to ensure that a full list of suitable nominations for all elected positions is available at the nominations meeting. Election Meeting Following the nominations meeting, an election meeting must be held during March, to comply with the MD201 reporting requirements and in accordance with Article X Section D of the Club Standard Form Constitution. The Secretary must give a minimum of two weeks’ prior written notice of the
9
meeting, which must include the date, time, and venue of the meeting together with the names of all those nominated for each position. Further nominations CANNOT be accepted at the Election Meeting, other than in the circumstances outlined in Article X Section C of the Club Standard Form Constitution. Notification of Elected Officers Following the election meeting, the Club Secretary must immediately, and in any case no later than 31st March notify the elected officers for the ensuring Lions year commencing upon 1st July to the Cabinet Secretary
It is important that the time lines are met for the District, Multidistrict and International requirements’
We should begin to give thought to who would like to be a delegate at the Multiple District
Convention, members eligible to be delegates should be financial and been a member of Australian
Lionsonoz for one year and one day.

Lions doing what they do best - helping people, is a common
sight for those many communities in which Lions serve. But,
horses helping Lions - now that's a twist!
In a great show of generosity and community spirit, the NSW Harness Racing Club charity pacer, Abettorrose regularly races for charities and community groups, who receive $2,500 for a win, and, if unsuccessful, the chosen charity still receives $250 just for a start! Last Friday, Lionsonoz member, Lion Trish Hyett accompanied husband Lion Syd, a member of Ingleburn Lions Club, to the NSW Harness Racing Club meeting held at Menangle Park to cheer on charity pacer, a Abettorrose. This beautiful horse trotted bravely for Ingleburns Lions Club, proudly leading for most of the race, but the last couple of hundred meters proved just too much for this fearsome filly.

(Help me mum, I’M SO HOT)
Temperatures touching on 40 degrees and Little Jimmy just couldn’t handle it, wet
clothes with a fan was the only way to cope with Kel occasionally wetting him all
over, as well we had the air conditioner going full blast.
Two days later it was 10 degrees and Jimmy was getting around in his doggie coat
trying warming up. Kinglake, Victoria.

RED FINN
Get a load of these little beauties PDG Warren, caught in
one of the large dams situated on the Charolais Stud near
Kinflake, Victoria where my son Tony is the manager.
When we visit which
is about once or twice
a year there always strong
competition between family
members to see who can out
fish out shoot targets or
who can shoot the most
foxes or fish for crayfish in
the many dams. Of course
Tony usually wins as he has all the clues. However, I did give him
a stir up a couple of times.
These fish are just so pretty and if you hold them in the right light
they have amazing colours. It is always a catch and release situation as he doesn’t want the
numbers to decrease so that we are to able to continue the sport.
This is the view from the front door of our van, beautiful to wake up to each morning.
Kel and spent six weeks on the property and one day we would be freezing and the next trying to
cool off in 39 degrees heat. Crazy place that Melbourne area.

AUSTRALIAN LIONS KNITTING REPORT - JANUARY, 2016

PAW PROTECTORS NEEDED FOR KAOLAS INJURED IN BUSHFIRES
Something a little different this month, I realize that not all ladies are comfortable with knitting or
crocheting but I do know for a fact that some of you are a wiz on the sewing machine. During the
recent bush fires many Koalas were seriously injured and the International Fund for Animal Welfare
(IFAW) has asked volunteers to make up paw protectors which are used to put over bandages. The
treatment for burns in a koala is very similar to the treatment of burns in a human being a regime of
infection control, applying burn creams and bandages. Port Macquarie Koala Hospital has 190
volunteers and three paid staff and during a bush fire in heavily Koala populated areas 400 mittens
could quite easily used up within the week.
If I can encourage you to participate in this project we could then decide where to send the mittens
where they would be most needed, we may not even use them all this
year but we do know bushfires are a fact of life and the IFAW need to
have a stockpile handy,
So I ask please, if you have a little bit of time and a sewing machine
that’s just sitting there, run up a few sets of mittens, they
certainly be appreciated by the IFWA and of course the Koala.
Patten for mittens on next page. Lion Yvie Kearns

2017 - Australian Lions Coin
A couple of months ago Gwyneth suggested the I type up an article about a Coin to be struck
by the Australian Mint to celebrate the 100 years of service that Lions have performed for
18
their communities around the globe since 1917. At the time, I didn’t think that it would make
much of a story to write about, but over Christmas I thought, yes maybe I should tell our
members how this all came about.
About three or four years ago when I was a member of the Lions Club of Forest Lake Inc., I
thought to myself, wouldn’t it be nice if the Lions of Australia were recognized for the work
they do in their communities by having a coin struck that would be in circulation for many
years to come, something that the public would see on a daily basis, while promoting the
good work that Lions, Lioness and LEO’s do for their communities around Australia.
I went and saw Bernie Ripoll, who is the Federal Member for Oxley, who at the time
happened to have the Australian Mint as one of his portfolios, when I explained my idea to
Bernie, he said he thought it had merit and would take it to cabinet.
Bernie contacted me about a month later and said that it meets all criteria set down by the
Australian Mint and asked for a proposal to be put forward by Lions.
At the time I was also serving on Cabinet in Q3 and I spoke to the District Governor of the
day who was Kaye Smith, she also liked the idea and said she would take it to the next
Multiple District Council for consideration. Apparently the council of Governors liked the idea
and will be taking it up with the Australian Mint.
I then gave all the information to now PDG Kaye who forwarded the information on to the MD
Council.
With a bit of luck, we will see a coin struck celebrating the 100 years of service by Australian
Lions in 2017.
Yours in Lionism
Lion John Matheson
Subject: ** The Value of Engineering **
I know those who are even slightly mechanically inclined will love this. You don't have to be an engineer to appreciate this story
19
A toothpaste factory had a problem. They sometimes shipped empty boxes without the tube inside. This challenged their perceived quality with the buyers and distributors. Understanding how important the relationship with them was, the CEO of the company assembled his top people. They decided to hire an external engineering company to solve their empty boxes problem. The project followed the usual process: budget and project sponsor allocated, RFP, and third-parties selected. Six months (and $8 million) later they had a fantastic solution - on time, on budget, and high quality. Everyone in the project was pleased. They solved the problem by using a high-tech precision scale that would sound a bell and flash lights whenever a toothpaste box weighed less than it should. The line would stop, someone would walk over, remove the defective box, and then press another button to re-start the line. As a result of the new package monitoring process, no empty boxes were being shipped out of the factory. With no more customer complaints, the CEO felt the $8 million was well spent. He then reviewed the line statistics report and discovered the number of empty boxes picked up by the scale in the first week was consistent with projections, however, the next three weeks were zero! The estimated rate should have been at least a dozen boxes a day. He had the engineers check the equipment, they verified the report as accurate. Puzzled, the CEO travelled down to the factory, viewed the part of the line where the precision scale was installed, and observed just ahead of the new $8 million dollar solution sat a $20 desk fan blowing the empty boxes off the belt and into a bin. He asked the line supervisor what that was about. "Oh, that," the supervisor replied, "Bert, the kid from maintenance, put it there because he was tired of walking over, removing the box and re-starting the line every time the bell rang."
