JOHN RICKARD DEMONSTRATION: “You don’t have to be the best just do YOUR best”

On Saturday we were treated to a fabulous demonstration by John Rickard who has been a member of our society for over 25 years. The first part of the demonstration he spoke about his life, the beginnings of his art and showed wonderful slides of his paintings then demonstrated a pen and wash painting.

He started painting as an 8 year old when he attended West Coburg Primary School where he won an award for art at that early age. He talked about the old days of heating water in a copper for a bath and lighting was from a kerosene lamp: Wonderful memories.

His first paid artwork was commissioned by The Argus of Robert Menzies, a portrait in lead pencil and he remembers that at the time he was paid 25 pounds for it.

During the war he worked as an engineer and at APM Southbank where he worked until he retired in 1986. During his retirement he has painted, played music and delved into genealogy.

He did many sketches over time using a 4B-6B pencil and as he said you have to be precise with those ones because once laid down there is no going back.

When he starts a piece the first thing he thinks is “where’s the light” and that gives him the basis of where everything will be. Most of his artwork is barns and old buildings with the occasional portrait. He said keep paintings simple with block of light and tonal perspective. “You don’t have to paint every detail leave some white lights for the viewer’s imagination”

He started his painting for the demo using a pen to sketch first lightly with a few little darks then applied watercolour over the pen sketch making sure to leave those little white lights that are so important. To finish he used a slightly thicker pen to highlight and emphasise parts of his painting.
