Letter from the Regional Vice-President

Dear Southern Region Members of ADS

Having accepted the position of Vice President of the Southern Region based on the recruiting promise that the job required absolutely no qualifications and precious little more effort, the reality and subsequent panic has now set in. The charge to make the Region an organ of information, support and encourgement for all of us in all our diversities is bewildering.

There are five states, seven societies (as best as I can determine) and 123 of us lumped together under the heading of Southern Region wondering what on earth, besides our love of daffodils, we have in common. We vary a good 21 degrees in our winter low temperatures and 12 inches in total rainfall. We range from 0" to 17" of snowfall among our cities. Our peak daffodil blooming seasons vary as much as a month. A full 26 days separate our shows - not to mention the 10 to 12 hours driving time. Temperatures in March vary 16 degrees and 12 degrees in April among our states. Rainfall varies 2 inches these same months. Our members wrestle with such specialized growing environments as mountains, swamps, deltas, plateaus, sand and slate. What's a Region to do? What's a VP to do to make our existence relevant to such a scattering of members and growing conditions?

One thing I hope to do is to reinstate the Southern Regional Meeting. Since we are so spread out, the best approach seems to be to rotate the site of regional meetings. I would also like to rotate the site of the regional show and better coordinate the dates of our local shows. Of course, the newsletter is essential to the functioning of the Region. Ruth Pardue, who recently moved to our region from Columbus, Ohio, has volunteered to do the newsletter thereby winning my eternal gratitude. She will detail plans for the upcoming meeting and other information.

I need to hear from you. I need to know what you need from the Region. I need to hear your ideas, your problems and your solutions. I need your experience in organizing daffodil activities and in growing daffodils in your area. With the help of Ruth and the support of my local members, I hope to make our Southern Region an active and useful division of ADS.

New Student Judges

The Eastern Tennessee Daffodil Society sponsored Course I and H Judging Schools for the American Daffodil Society on March 24, 1990. The following successfully completed both courses and are eligible to student judge in the 1991 shows. ADS Judges Chairman Naomi Liggett recommends that these new students be given the opportunity to complete their requirements. The instructors for the school were Kitty and Dick Frank of Nashville, TN.

This delightful poem which was enhanced by computer graphics was the result of a project of the 4th grade class at Alcoa Elementary School in Alcoa, TN. Students planted a bed of daffodils and iris in the shape of the state of Tennessee. The iris is the state flower of Tennessee. These 9 and 10 year old students measured the depth and distance between the bulbs, wrote poems, made scientific observations, and recorded dates of bloom. A contest was held to see whose bulb would bloom first. The project integrated all disciplines of study of the 4th grade level. Thanks to Adrianne Alexander and all of her classmates for this innovative project.

Daffodils and irises In the shape of Tennessee.

That's the kind of art work 5 f. That best appeals to me.

We sprinkled lime and fertilizer On the soil to make them grow. That's the reason why this project Is special to me so. fi

When they come up in the sprin How excited we will be.

To see daffodils and irises In the shape of Tennessee.

Note from the editor: After having lived in the same house for 29 years, and with my husband being assigned to

Oak Ridge, Tennessee, I find myself desparately trying to dig daffodils, daylilies, hostas and peonies to make a new garden in my new location. Knowing that the growing season and cultural conditions for plants will be quite different, I will need all the help I can get from local gardeners. This has prompted me to try to get to know the daffodil people in this area. Having recently met our Regional Vice President, I am eager to let you know that we really have an enthusiastic leader.

Meet the Regional Vice President

Glenda Ross-Smith is a native of Tennessee. Her interest and love of daffodils started in the season of 1983-1984 when she was in Nashville. Her first garden was planted twice in this year as she moved to Knoxville. She is most appreciative of the help that Alice Wray Taylor gave her that first year.

When you enter Glenda's lovely home which is situated on the Tennessee River, you know immediately that a daffodil devotee abides within. Her personally designed kitchen has many delightful daffodil crafts and art objects. On my first visit while we were sitting in the kitchen, the 12 year old daughter Mary Ellen came in and made delicious biscuits for our lunch. Daughter Julia who is 11, was involved in the Alcoa Project mentioned in this newsletter. Michael is the youngest member of the Ross-Smith clan and has the boundless energy of a 9 year old. The children grow their own daffodils and have entered ADS shows and won ribbons.

Glenda met her husband in Istanbul while she was teaching college student personnel as a civilian. Glenda holds a Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee. Mike was an Army physician and his occupation took his family to many interesting spots around the world. He is currently with the University of Tennessee Hospital, Department of Anesthesiology.

The living room of the Ross-Smith home contains several unusal musical instruments. Glenda is interested in Celtic music and plays the Irish harp. She also is proficient on the recorder. Mike plays drums and each of the children play an instrument. They are all ardent Blue Grass fans. Glenda is involved in choral groups including the Medical Auxiliary, which she co directs, and the youth choir of Lake Hills Presbyterian in Knoxville, which is under her leadership. The family has a full recording studio which they added to their home. Glenda finds it easier to record the music for her choral groups.

Glenda has recently completed the first two courses of the ADS judging school. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Her friend and our luncheon companion, Nancy Robinson says that any thing that Glenda undertakes is done well and she is an inspiration to those who are fortunate enough to work with her.
