“Endurance is one of the most difficult

disciplines, but it is to the one who endures that

the final victory comes.”

Summer is passing again, and the lengthy, sunny days accompaning it arealmost gone. This is the time of year where time itself slows, whetheryou’re in the Caribbean, Mexico or South/Central/North America. Theseare the days where endurance finds itself tested. The heat almost seems topersuade you to engage in the lackadaisical summer mentality.

Though occasional time off work is vital for rejuvenation, immersing intothat mindset becomes an option. But we know that it isn’t the first horse

out of the gates that triumphs; it is the one that stays steadfast and resolute. We learn through reflections of thepast; we seek progression through preparation for the future. By establishing and illustrating our goal, we havea defined destination.

Now that the finish line is in the distance, it is time to run the race. It is time to return to work refreshed, revi-talized and ready. It is time to teach your organization the direction and pace to run.

The FCCA Conference is the ideal place to reinvigorate your organization, by clarifying the cruise industry’s goalsand infusing enthusiasm into your organization to help you achieve your goals. It provides the opportunity to meetthose who can assist your race, people who will share knowledge, experience and training. The cruise executivesfrom the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association’s Member Lines look forward to seeing you and your staff at theFCCA Caribbean Cruise Conference & Trade Show in the Cayman Islands, October 31 – November 3, 2006.

This Conference issue of Caribbean Cruising highlights a couple of the FCCA’s most recent events/activities:Platinum Associate Members’ trip to Colombia and highlights of a Platinum Members new tour...ExploraCaribe. A glimpse of our own future is seen in the FCCA Conference and Trade show article. Also included arearticles illuminating features: the Free Stay Program and Royal Caribbean Internationals ship building program.

I believe that there is a direct correlation between the success of an organization and the vision, commitmentand passion of its leader(s). The FCCA’s goal is to positively impact these individuals, so that they may passthis advancement on to the cruise industry and destinations. I hope to see all of you in the Cayman Islands, where their renowned turtles can teach us how to run this race.

Respectfully yours,

Michele M. Paige

The Florida-Caribbean CruiseAssociation and PlatinumAssociate Members were able

to witness the reasons behindCartagena’s recent and rapid tourismrise. Barraged by skepticism andstereotypes, hindered by misconstruc-tions and preconceived petrifaction, this luscious land has been lying dor-mant for far too long. But the peoplehave awakened and intend to enlightenthe visitors of their passion; they long

to show the love of their land and thelengths they will extend themselves towin tourists over.

As the attendees disembarked on June28th, 2006, they would immediatelyfeel this engaging environment. A feel-ing of significance would also over-whelm them, as the people of Cartagenaknew the importance of the imminentevents. Once exiting the airport, thebare ground was an astonishing sight; a

red carpet was almost expected toaccompany the press present.

Once everyone had boarded the bus, aguided ride brought the group to thestunning Santa Teresa Hotel, whichhad been transformed from a convent. After ample time to settle in andunpack, one of the most rewardingactivities took place. The coach trans-ported everyone to the Juan FelipeGomez Orphanage, where they partici-pated in presenting the presents. Afterthe largesse had been distributedaccordingly, the group observed theoperations of the orphanage.

Because of the orphanage and the foun-dation, more than 1,100 lives have beensaved. They aren’t just lowering theinfant mortality rate; they provide freemedical care for adolescent mothers andtheir babies.

In addition to the gifts, clothes and sup-plies, they now had a new piece ofequipment: a water fountain, compli-ments of the FCCA Foundation. Thegroup was then rewarded with a cock-tail party at Plazoleta del Santa Teresa,

The next day differed for many, but pro-vided adventure and enjoyment foreveryone. For some, it began with acomplimentary breakfast and quicklyturned into a scenic, historic city tour.Everyone then reunited during lunch atClub de Pesca. Many returned to thehotels in order to get well rested for theeventful night ahead of them, but sometook the opportunity to join MichelePaige on her spontaneous shopping tour.

The group then gathered at the HerediaTheatre. Through the speeches of LuisGuillermo Plata, President ofProexport; Andres Pastrana, U.S.Ambassador of Colombia, and NicolasFrancis Curi Vergara, Mayor ofCartagena, insight about the country’s

current state of affairs was gained; theirexponential growth was demonstrated;their vital role throughout an abun-dance of industries was exemplified.

The city of Cartagena even bestowedthe key to the city to none other thanFCCA’s own Michele Paige, she alsorceived the “Passion Award”.

The passion of Colombia was then per-sonified throughout the rest of thenight. Upon exiting the theater, therewas a congregation of dancers presentto surprise and amaze. When theensemble seemed complete with theirperformance, they found their way intothe crowd and selected people at ran-dom. After a brief dance, they spreadthe exuberance and festivities to thestreets. Accompanied by the dancers, the group made their way down the old

city main street. The spectators thenbecame the spectacle, as residents madetheir way outside to watch the passingparade. Though some opted againstwalking and rode aboard the horse andbuggy, everyone arrived at the samedestination – San Ignacio Rampart, where dinner was then served. Ofcourse – no meal is complete without ashow, and the Country ImageCampaign provided just that. After theBeauty Pageant contestants made theirelegant promenade, more dancers tookthe stage to grant another glimpse atColombian culture.

Friday would prove to have the mostprofessional feel to it. It started off nor-mally, with complimentary breakfast inboth hotels, but the executives andPlatinum Members then found theirway over to the Santa Teresa. The business

functions began with one-on-one meetingsbetween Members and Executives. Asthese personal processes came to aclose, the FCCA PAMAC meetingbegan preparation. Included in this wasnecessary security precaution, as therewould be a very important participant:Alvaro Uribe Velez, President ofColombia. Rick Strunck, Director ofItinerary Planning, Norwegian CruiseLine shares some of the advantages,“For me, the time spent recently inCartagena, Colombia with the FCCA'sPlatinum members served a duel pur-pose. It was obviously an excellentopportunity for a hands-on evaluationof a potential destination for NCL'scruise ships. However, of equal impor-tance was the opportunity to spendquality "face-time" with some of themore influential operators in theCaribbean. I feel it's extremely benefi-cial for both the cruise executives andthe Platinum members to share, first-hand, their concerns, insights, opinionsand the latest developments within theindustry... especially when these dis-cussions take place in a beautifulCaribbean destination like Cartagena!”

Once the business aspect had been cov-ered, the group was once again free toappreciate the affable ambience. The

group was first transferred to el Hotel deAmericanas for a scrumptious lunchwith a beach view. From the hotel, avariety of selections were available—ranging from a Bay cruise, a tour of thefortifications of Cartagena, or returningto the appropriate hotel. The night wasthen saturated with celebration. It beganon board a pirate ship with entertain-ment to engage the audience, and tostart the night’s festivities.

As the newly-appointed pirates disem-barked, they found a welcoming partyand a greeting band. As they helpedthemselves to drinks, more speecheswere heard from Luis Guillermo Plata,President of Proexport and AndresPastrana, U.S. Ambassador ofColombia. As a bodacious buffetbecame available, the group found theirway down to the port’s dining hall.

Though the next day signified theoncoming completion of the trip, itoffered the both of best worlds; activityand tranquility were both within reach. There were two morning tours offered, both of which offered exploration. Themore passive of the two was a trip tothe Botanical Gardens and the World ofReptiles, and the more active escapadeconsisted of a snorkeling and diving

trip. The afternoon and evening provid-ed the opportunity to get to know theland at a more personal level, as itgranted sufficient free time to form acustomized farewell.

Robert Giangrisostomi, Senior DeputyExecutive Director of the CanaveralPort Authority sheds his thoughts,“Thank you for all your hard work forthe Cartagena Trip. It was just wonder-ful in every aspect. I am sure everyoneenjoyed the trip and the President andhis government did a most superb jobeducating all of us on the tremendousadvancements Colombia has made inthe areas of Tourist Development andSafety and it is my firm belief that thiswill become a major port of call in thefuture for all cruise lines. Cartagena isbeautiful and has a rich history that haslived on through the centuries and it isamazing that so much of the Spanisharchitecture and fortresses still remainin pristine condition after 500 years. This was truly a port of call to remember. Please express my gratitudeto President Uribe for a most successfuland worthwhile visit.”

The flight home provided time to reflecton the copious opportunities presentedin Colombia – the land of passion. It letthem think back on the vivaciousnesscontained throughout every action andfunction. This was another trip in whichthe conjunction of work and pleasurewas seamless. Though it wasn’t just theusual crowd that made this trip spectac-ular, the people of Cartagena realizedthe impact this event would hold, andthey intended to make a lasting impres-sion. They provided live examples ofthe extent that they would exert in orderto appease Platinum Members, CruiseExecutives, cruise passengers, or anyother visitors to their country.

Most business events aren’t characterized by acts of philanthropy, but this happened to be the case in FCCA’s Platinum Event inCartagena, Colombia. Amidst the business and pleasure, theattendants were able to fit in a great act of charity, making aneffort to assist the Juan Felipe Gomez Escobar Foundation.

Founded in March, 2001, this organization has had two areasof concern: saving lives and educating adolescent mothers.More than 1,100 people owe their lives to the Crib SponsorProgram, which reduced the death rate from 47.4% to 6.8%in just 4 years. Through this program, free medical care isoffered to adolescent mothers and their infants, and over6,480 patients have taken advantage of this feature during thelast 7 months!

Since teaching one to fish proves much more rewarding, thefoundation offers education to adolescent mothers. Throughthe Adolescent Mothers Program (AMP), 620 girls havealready received psychological support and training in beau-ty, cooking, and sewing. There is also the AdolescentMothers Alumni Program (AMAP), which selects outstand-ing participants from the AMP and gives advanced guidance

in computer skills and first aid; some were even chosen to bepart of Johnson & Johnson “Bright Minds” program and arenow enrolled in college. Workshops which show how to gen-erate income through bakeries, candy shops, and “kiosks” arealso available.

In order to support the efforts, the Platinum group went to theorphanage bearing presents and promise. As the largesse waspresented, there was a palpable sense of exuberance and gra-ciousness, not longing and despair as one might expect tosee. As the clothes, food, and nursery items were distributed, not a single soul tried to take advantage of the generosity;each mother accepted only what was meant for them andrequested nothing more. After the 10 boxes of gifts weregiven out, they did receive an additional item: a water foun-tain, which was the gift they requested.

From talking to the myriad of mothers, it was obvious that manyof them could excel if only presented opportunity. Through thejoint efforts of the FCCA and the Juan Felipe Gomez EscobarFoundation, it is clear that chances and breaks will find theirway. These families have hope and so much more.

Staying Put for Another Year

Carnival Cruise Lines made anannouncement today that was goodnews for the city of Mobile.

The announcement was that Carnivalhas exercised their option for a third yearto homeport Holiday at the Alabamaport for 4- and 5-night cruises. This willkeep the ship there through 2007.

Carnival seems to think Mobile is awonderful partner. In the announce-ment, Carnival president BobDickinson said, "Consumer response to'Fun Ship' cruising from Mobile aboardthe Holiday has been exceptional. Weare very pleased to extend our contractwith the city - a valued business partner- and continue offering fun, affordablevacations from one of the cruise indus-try's finest terminal facilities."

Carnival's VP of market planning, TerryThornton said, "We believe that ourships are deployed in a way that enablesus to generate the best results for ourtotal fleet. Mobile is an important pieceto that puzzle, and is a good 'fit' for theHoliday. We are still working on devel-oping this homeport and creating high-er levels of demand. Even though wehave operated in excess of 100% occu-pancy, we would like to improve on thecruise rates," Thornton said.Nonetheless, he said that so far,Carnival views their operation atMobile as very successful and they arehappy with the way things are going.

Carnival Cruise Ships to Make 27Trips to Colombia in 2007

Princess Cruises ships will make 27trips to the Colombian Caribbean portof Cartagena in 2007, President AlvaroUribe's press office said in a recentstatement. Princess Cruises is a unit ofCarnival Corp. (CCL). Each ship willcarry about 2,000 tourists each.

Cruise lines are resuming docking inthe colonial port of Cartagena asUribe's get-tough policy againstguerillas and criminal violence hasled to a dramatic improvement insecurity conditions.

Carnival's announcement follows asimilar decision from its competitor,Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL)

Royal Caribbean's chief executive,Richard Fain, said in May his companywill take about 76,000 passengers toCartagena in 2007 and 2008.

"You know the importance for theport, for the taxis, for the restaurants, for the jewel shops, for everybody inthe city," Uribe said in the speech tocruise businessmen gathered inCartagena for a congress.

Each cruise passenger spends between $75and $100 per day in the ports they stay in,according to Royal Caribbean's estimates.

The President said other companiesalso decided to include the city in theiritineraries.

The lower crimes, kidnappings and vio-lence in general in the country areencouraging tourists to visit Colombia.A total of 937,000 foreigners visited thecountry last year, up 20% from 2004and much higher than the 566,092 thatarrived in 2002, according toColombia's Commerce, Industry andTourism Ministry.

F C C A C u s t o m e r S e r v i c eWorkshops Target St. Lucia

The Florida-Caribbean CruiseAssociation recently partnered with theSaint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority(SLASPA) the Ministry of Tourism andCarib Travel in Saint Lucia to host atwo and a half day training workshopfor three hundred industry personnel onthe island. On July 25, Adam Ceseranoinstructed the participants on innova-tive ways of improving their services inthe areas of courtesy, professionalismand marketing.

Speaking at the opening of the work-shop SLASPA's Tourism Officer DonaRegis described the occasion as a redletter day for Cruise in the St. Luciancommunity. She expressed SLASPA'sgratitude to the FCCA for taking the ini-tiative in helping the government of St.Lucia ensure that customer servicetraining has a training benchmark acrossthe sector.

According to Regis "the increasing evi-dence of the significant impact of thecruise industry in the Caribbean, thetraining of front-line workers becomesa critical factor in maintaining St.Lucia's image as the destination ofchoice for many."

The morning workshop for Tour opera-

tors, vendors and customer serviceworkers was formally opened by St.Lucia's Tourism Minister Hon. Philip J.Pierre. He took the opportunity to re-affirm government's commitment toensure a favorable environment for thegrowth and development of the cruisetourism industry.

The second workshop for Taxi opera-tors was officially opened by Hon.Felix Finnesterre, Minister ofCommunications, Works, Transport &Public & Public Utilities. In his wel-come he made an impassioned plea forcontinued collaboration between theFCCA and the destination countries forthe mutual benefit of all.

According to the Minister, the positiveforecast for the 2006 cruise season iseven more reason for the FCCA's part-nership with SLASPA and the Ministryof Tourism, as these three organiza-tions work assiduously to help theCaribbean maintain its rank as thedominant cruise destination.

Workshop participants for both sessionsindicated a high level of satisfactionwith the training, which they received.

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) has exemplified justhow two are better than one; their grand aspirations nowserve as incontrovertible support. Though the title for thelargest ship at sea usually holds a sole owner, it must now

be shared between RCI’s dynamic duo, both weighingin at 160,000 GRT. The real story isn’t how the

possible 3,634 guests fit onto the ship;elucidating upon the enormousness

isn’t necessary.

Many have already delved into the statis-tics already, as the new fleet received anabundance of anticipatory attention. Manyalready caught a glimpse of the ships through

the public eye and read the numbers, learningabout the 1,112ft x 185ft structure. However, the sizealone is not astounding; awareness needs to be gained onthe adaptability of the two powerhouses – the Freedom ofthe Seas and the Liberty of the Seas. They have found away to ensure that everyone can have a good time, on oroff the ship.

Unfortunately, not all of the amenities and features can becovered here, but a few examples include the ice-skatingrink, which even hosts an original show, and the 43-foot-tall by 44-foot-wide climbing wall with a central spire and11 climbing routes. It’s possible to fulfill almost everyappetite at the Royal Promenade’s cafes and bistros, barsand lounges, and shops; the overhanging bridge and night-ly midnight parade should make it a popular meeting point.

People who prefer to stay in their rooms and take advantageof the complimentary room service also find added comfort, convenience, and innovation. All staterooms now featureflat-panel televisions. As the sisters and line are like familyand treat the passengers as such, the ships are now equippedwith rooms to more appropriately accommodate their fami-lies. “The new stateroom categories on Freedom of the Seasgive guests the ability to spend downtime together comfort-ably between onboard activities and shoreside adventures,”

said Richard D. Fain, Royal Caribbean Chairman and CEO.“We’ve introduced several new configurations, givingguests the freedom to choose from different stateroom sizesand price ranges.” They now offer families six ways to betogether beyond triple and quad stateroom categories, including the Presidential Family Suite, at 1,215 square feet, which sleeps 14 and features four bedrooms, four baths andan 810-square-foot outdoor living area with whirlpool, wetbar and al fresco dining table.

Since the families may not have a particular predilection forstaying in the room, there are many services and activitiesthat cater to families. The younger guests can enjoy RoyalCaribbean’s award-winning Adventure Ocean Program. From science experiments and Adventure Art by Crayola®crafts projects to sports tournaments and dance parties, guests3 to 17 years of age have a full social calendar. Teens, in par-ticular, have plenty of space to call their own with three, exclusive areas just for them – Fuel nightclub, The LivingRoom hangout and the Back Deck sundeck. In addition,Freedom of the Seas features the line’s Aqua Babies andAqua Tots playtime programs developed by partner Fisher-Price®, Inc. for cruisers ages six months to 36 months andtheir parents. The parents may enjoy the jungle-themed,adult-only Solarium, which provides many opportunities—from spending a lazy afternoon in a hammock to enjoyingunderwater music while swimming in the central pool.

“Freedom of the Seas” combined pool area is 43 percentlarger than on our Voyager-class ships, giving us the abilityto create three distinctive spaces to appeal to our varied audi-ences,” said Richard D. Fain, Royal Caribbean Chairman andCEO. The pools have also become more of an attraction, andit seems appropriate that they’re providing passengers withfun in the water while on the water.

Though the ocean may be serene, there will be enough wavesin the FlowRider® surf simulator to hang ten. The 32-foot-wide by 40-foot-long FlowRider® generates a thin sheet ofwater that flows over the ride surface, creating a wave-like

shape. Similar to swimming against a current in a stationarylap pool, riders surf or body board against a wave like water-flow of 34,000 gallons per minute, carving turns and tryingtricks. Fortunately, wipeouts prove far less brutal, as theinnovative design even includes a composite surface, similarto a trampoline, which provides a cushion to absorb theimpact of falls.

Descending from the aft sports court on Deck 13 down toDeck 12, the FlowRider® is surrounded by plenty of spacefor spectators to cheer on their friends, family and fellowcruisers. After guests sign up, instructors walk them througha required safety session with tips for a successful ride. Forkids who can’t wait to get a jump on the action there is a dailysurf camp from 8-9a.m. that teaches FlowRider® lessons. Anadjacent sports bar features flat-panel TV's with a live feed ofthe surf park action, while a sports boutique offers surfinggear and wear.

Another highlight, and one of the most spectacular spaceson Freedom of the Seas, is the H2O Zone, a colorful won-derland of large, brightly hued sculptures that double asinteractive fountains that spray, sprinkle and spurt water inevery direction.

The oversized sculptures depict family members of all shapesand sizes, including the family dog, and give guests numer-ous ways to get soaked – and soak each other – by turningwheels, setting off sensors and dodging dumping buckets. The sculptures are spread throughout a large, central wadingarea that also includes a number of spray cannons, water jetsand ground gushers.

In one corner of the water playground, a circular poolshoots a current of water in a river around a central island.Guests float with the flow as they are misted by one of thefountain sculptures. Next to the circular pool, a shallowpool, fed by a flamingo-shaped fountain, creates a secludedspace for the ship’s youngest cruisers. At the back of thepark, a rectangular swimming pool is flanked by wading

areas and fed by a waterfall cascading from an overhang-ing bridge. At night, the water park turns into a dramati-cally lit sculpture garden.

All of the excitement isn’t directed at what to do on theship; there is a good deal of focus about the destinationsthemselves. The two ships in Royal Caribbean’s newFreedom class, to be joined by a third in 2008, will alter-nate between 7-night Western and Eastern Caribbeanitineraries, Liberty departing on Saturdays and Freedom onSundays from Miami. Both will bring guests to the RoyalCaribbean’s private destination, Labadee, Haiti, beforereturning to Miami, Liberty’s Western Caribbean itinerarycalls in Cozumel, Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman;and Montego Bay, Jamaica; while the Eastern Caribbeanitinerary calls in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Philipsburg,St. Maarten, allowing for a third day at sea to take advan-tage of all the ship has to offer.

Harri Kulovaara, executive vice president, is quite modestin saying, “We created Freedom based on guests’ wishesand demands and there are so many things to do, see andexperience, that it allows cruisers to escape and have thefreedom of choice. It’s a terrific time for our brand and welook forward to introducing Liberty of the Seas, to return-ing guests and first-time cruisers.” Both he and the line areillustrating the direction of cruising; the desire to satisfythe customers; the fun on the land and the sea. TheFreedom and Liberty will show their collaborated strength.

With five months left in the preparation for the 13th AnnualFlorida-Caribbean Cruise Conference and Trade Show, theCayman Islands Government, in an unprecedented steptowards preparing the business community for this importantevent, hosted several training workshops in June.Representatives from the FCCA, the Cayman IslandsDepartment of Tourism and the Cayman Islands InvestmentBureau collaborated with the Honorable Charles E. Clifford,Minister for Tourism, Environment, Investment andCommerce, to create these unique workshops, entitled “Howto prepare your business to benefit from the cruise lines”.

The Minister opened the workshops by indicating his hopethat the panel of experts would empower and prepare localcompanies to meet the FCCA decision makers in October.

The FCCA teamed up Amilcar “Mico” Cascais, the Directorof Tour Operations for Carnival Cruise Lines and GrahamDavis, Manager of the Caribbean and Atlantic ShoreOperations of Princess and Cunard Cruises, to assistCayman in realizing the imminent and infinite possibilitiesoffered by the upcoming Conference. They formed a power-ful industry triad that would prove perfect for delivering theinformation to allow astronomical improvements for thelocal tourism economy.

Their mission was to enlighten new tour operators to the

guidelines of an important process, one which would allowthem to market their business on board the cruise lines. Mr.Cascais and Mr. Davis brought extensive experience relatingto the subject matter – insight to the process of presentingtours to the cruise lines. Through this education, new touroperators are able to gain access to one of the most profitableand promising industries; one which brings millions of peo-ple to their destination; an opportunity of contacting the mul-titude of passengers that plan to visit their country, and hope-fully eventually their tour. The curriculum didn’t just includethe necessary steps to take by the tour operators, but also elu-cidated upon the cruise lines’ desires and actions and how toprove the product perpetuates them.

Mr. Cascais and Mr. Davis shared invaluable informationon how companies should approach the cruise lines to dobusiness. They stressed the importance of preparing com-prehensive proposals inclusive of insurance, fees anddescriptions of services and products. They encouragedcompanies to have patience in the proposal review processand shared tips on how to negotiate with the cruise linesonce the proposals had been reviewed.

Ultimately, the cruise executives delivered what theMinister of Tourism asked - step by step instructions onhow to organize potential new tours and activities, how toprepare proposals for the cruise executive’s considerationand even how to follow up for maximum effectiveness.

“Over the years, Grand Cayman has become extremely wellknown in the travel market and has built a reputation of beinga wonderfully exotic and romantic place to visit, making it avery desirable destination for cruise guests,” tells LarryStauffer, Manager, Shore Excursions and Island Recreation,Disney Cruise Line. Stauffer adds, “Grand Cayman truly hasit all, from breathtaking scenery to incredible cuisine and arich cultural history. One of the greatest stand-out attractionsin the Cayman Islands is the opportunity to experience someof the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world. Guestswho enjoy water sports rave about the coral reefs. In addition, the people who work in the tourism industry in GrandCayman are great professionals. It is the combination of thesefeatures that make it a truly wonderful port destination.”

The Cayman Islands, site of the upcoming FCCA CaribbeanCruise Conference, is one of the strongest destinations in theCaribbean, alluring vacationers with coral-decked underwa-ter vistas, white sand beaches, and fascinating natural out-door attractions. Mico Cascais, Director of Tour Operationsfor Carnival Cruise Lines, acknowledges the strength of theCayman Islands as a cruise destination. “The Cayman Islandsis a unique place, very flat, but beautiful beaches, and strate-gically located between Jamaica and Cozumel for westernCaribbean itineraries.”

As Patrick Schneider, Account Manager, Shore Excursions -Royal Caribbean International, claims, “Having GrandCayman on an itinerary will sell a cruise, and it falls intoplace on any 7 day run out of Florida, Texas or the Southeast. It naturally fits and also has a good name.”

The community takes great pride in sharing their idyllicisland home – and it shows. The motto “Tourism Together”characterizes the attitude that the tourism-based businessestake toward their responsibility to provide visitors with agreat experience. In 2005 tourism drew almost two millionvisitors to the islands, representing about 50% of grossdomestic product. Steve Nielsen, Vice President ofCaribbean and Atlantic Shore Operations, Princess Cruises, mentions, “There’s been a shift in demand to go to theCayman Islands because they offer friendly people, touristattractions and natural beauty. There’s been continual growthin the past 25 years. Caymanians have a high standard of liv-ing, as they have strong economic drivers: banking, insur-ance, and tourism.”

In this environment, residents such as Robert Hamaty,Proprietor of Tortuga Rum Company, have thrived on theeconomic growth that tourism brings. “We’re in a greatgeographic location and cruise ships love the Cayman

Islands because of its safety, minimal crime situation com-pared to other destinations, our strong economy, and clean-liness,” he says.

The Hamaty family started out selling rum cakes from a fam-ily recipe in 1984. They now boast a booming business with17 retail locations and franchises in Barbados, Jamaica, andBahamas, plus sell their products onboard 108 cruise ships. They attribute much of their success to the cruise industry.“Cruise ships are such animportant part of the economyof the Cayman Islands; after9/11 if we didn’t have thecruise ships here, our mer-chants would have sufferedconsiderably worse.”

Cruise ship growth is up. Lastyear we received 1.8 millionvisitors by cruise ship, and the2006 number is projected at2.3 million. In anticipation ofthis growth, the CaymanIslands partnered with theFCCA to enhance its portfacilities. The Annual FCCA Conference is the perfect oppor-tunity to recognize that alliance. Nielsen said, “We are look-ing forward to the 13th annual FCCA Conference at GrandCayman, as we appreciate our long-term partnership.”

The Agreement signed on August 19, 2003, saw the CaymanIslands and the FCCA as partners in the construction of a new

cruise ship facility in downtown George Town. The alliancewas nearly 2 years in the making and attests to the strengthof the FCCA-Cayman relationship.

“There is now a dedicated cruise terminal for tenders andpassengers,” said Nielsen, “allowing more room in the exist-ing facilities to accommodate the current number of passen-gers calling at Grand Cayman.” Kirk Hendricks, owner ofKirk Sea Tours, which operates many of the shore excursions

in Grand Cayman, shares,“The new Royal Watler CruiseShip Terminal is an excitingdevelopment for vendors andtour operators because it pro-vides for better customer ser-vice, and a more organized dis-patch.”

Robert Hamaty, who is also theex-chairman of the portimprovement and beautifica-tion committee, supports thenew facility. “The RoyalWalter Cruise Terminal hascreated 200 ft. of tender pier

with a nice covered area, retail shopping facilities, bath-rooms, large area for picking up tourists, and a bus terminal.”

Excursion options in the Cayman Islands seem virtually end-less. According to Schneider, “The biggest attraction onGrand Cayman is Stingray City. It’s the basis of tours foraround 40% of all tourists to the island.” An exceptional

number of stingrays gathered at the site only about ten yearsago when North Sound fishermen came to clean their fish inthe calmer, shallower waters just over the reef. Enterprisingdive masters began hand-feeding them and the creaturesbecame passive to humans. The water level ranges from 12feet to waist deep, and visitors can safely swim and interactwith the rays.

Home to over 16,000 sea turtles, the Cayman Turtle Farm atBoatswain’s Beach is the only green sea-turtle farm in theworld. When Columbus first discovered the island, he calledit "Las Tortugas" for the flush of turtles in the area. In fact, the first business here wasreplenishing sailors’ ship sup-plies of turtles, which eventu-ally nearly depleted the ani-mals’ population in the islands. The conservationist haven wasestablished to bolster theendangered species; they hatch8,000 turtles a year.

Visitors are encouraged toexplore the mangroves bykayak, snorkel or dive throughreefs and shipwrecks, relax bythe warm, placid water at 7-Mile Beach, try a vast array ofwater sports from windsurfing to water-skiing, and deep-seafish for tuna, wahoo, and marlin. The Cayman Islands isknown for spectacular scuba diving and snorkeling, and boast159 dive sites. History lovers can soak up local culture atPedro St. James Historic Site. Outdoor types can appreciatethe island’s natural beauty at Queen Elizabeth II BotanicPark, or the Mastic Reserve, one of the last remaining exam-ples of the Caribbean's dry, subtropical forest.

There are also underwater sightseeing excursions available, like the Atlantis Submarines, first launched in the CaymanIslands in 1985, with US coast guard-approved, battery-pow-ered, non-polluting submarines that dive over 100 feet deep.Another option is the unique Seamobile, a bubble sub thatseats two and is piloted from the outside. The Seamobile pro-

vides 360-degree views; passengers can communicate withthe pilot to help steer, and the craft dives as deep as 150 feet.

The 13th Annual FCCA Caribbean Cruise Conference andTrade Show, October 31st-November 3rd, will be an idealopportunity to discover these and other facets of the CaymanIslands tourism industry. “It’s great that the Department ofTourism is sponsoring the Conference. It will showcase whatthe Cayman Islands has to offer to the cruise executives andthe industry. The FCCA Conference gives the local operatorsa chance to show what they offer,” Hamaty declares.Schneider concurs, “The Conference is a great opportunity to

meet with tour operators andcruise professionals. I enjoythe FCCA Conference becauseit gives me the chance to meetthese people and see what theislands have to offer so we cantransfer it to the guest experi-ence… The Conference isgoing to open people’s eyes towhat’s going on here in theCayman Islands. It will be anideal opportunity to show offthe island and how we canaccommodate the demand ofany guest on any given day.”

Cascais attests to the benefits of the Conference, “Any FCCAfunction offers a tremendous opportunity to showcase whatthe destinations have to everyone from CEO’s to marketingreps… the FCCA raises the bar very high in terms of offeringopportunities to serve the cruise industry… Attendees returnevery year because they get such success and enjoymentfrom the Conference.”

Stauffer summarizes his expectations for the event, “TheFCCA Conference is all about the opportunity to partner andbenchmark with others in the industry. It is a tremendousgrowth opportunity for attendees at all levels, and I am cer-tainly looking forward to the opportunity to meet new lead-ers and dignitaries in the Caribbean, particularly those whowill be hosting the Conference from the Cayman Islands.”

When the FCCA asked what would havea beneficial environmental impact, thir-teen destinations answered with aresounding voice. But this reply emittedno sound; it was in the form of somethingmore natural: art. The 2006 Children’sPoster Competition showcased artisticability, creativity, and their consciousnessof the world around them. Apart from animpressive turnout, 2006 proved to be oneof the most difficult years to judge. Thetalent from both groups was an over-whelming, but pleasant, experience.

The categories hopefully struck home tothe participants and granted them notonly awards, but awareness. Studentswere encouraged to create a poster thatvisually depicted at least three ways theycould help protect the environment andpromote the knowledge among students. The goal is to effectively educate effectand significance of environmental protection. Each countryshowcased the work of their finalists. There is a rigorous judg-ing process conducted in three rounds for this competition, orig-inating in the local schools, from the country’s selection com-mittee, and ending with the FCCA’s Judging Panel. Selection ofthe winners was a difficult feat, as all of the works portrayedeffective, sound ideas coupled with masterful technique. However, winners had to be chosen; Trifon Simmons of Nevis’St. Thomas Primary triumphed in the Junior Division (ages 12and younger), and 15-year-old Sabrina Romulue of St. Lucia’sCastries Comprehensive Secondary School brought the goldhome with her for the senior division.

Mr. Simons and Ms. Romulue both received an educationalscholarship of US $2,500 for their achievements. Both were alsowelcomed aboard one of the member line ships, where theirprizes, plaques, food, and more awaited them. NorwegianCruise Line catered Trifon Simmons’ ceremony, with his class-mates and faculty on the Norwegian Majesty, and SarbrinaRomulue, along with others, celebrated while experiencingRoyal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas. Thoughany participants was a winner, there were other awarded appli-cants. In the Junior Division, Bianca Blanchard from Haiti wonsecond place, with 10-year-old Kalya Jones from Belize takingan impressive third place. The Senior Division runner-ups were

Attainea Toulon from Dominica, whotook 2nd, and fourteen-year-old AmeliaLayne. For their efforts, they received US$1,500 and $1,000, respectively.Additionally, the FCCA awarded US$500 for art supplies to the schools of thefirst, second, and third place winners, with all other finalists receiving US $200.

Ms. Romulue of St. Lucia’s poster, enti-tled “Your Environment Reflects You,”illustrates both the negative and positiveaspects of the environment. The trees sig-nify growth and development and takethe form of a man and woman to repre-sent the people of the land. There are twoof the same features, which enhance theidea of how the good and bad practicesaffect the environment. The poster touch-es on such subjects as the importance ofnature, deforestation, proper garbage dis-posal, and the protagonists and antago-

nists of the marine environment.

Mr. Simmons Nevis’ work, “Preserving our Environment”shows spectacular insight from someone only twelve years old.It touches base upon the detriments harming homeostasis onboth the land and sea. It portrays the effects on the animals andshows solutions. It advocates an active, aggressive stance bydemonstrating the impact an individual can make, but it alsoexemplifies the malevolence some take toward nature. It isalmost calling out in duress that the right path must be selected.

The FCCA thanks all participants for their hard work and looksforward to seeing more dazzling displays. It’s true that every par-ticipant was a winner, and the knowledge gained is always a wor-thy requite. Even those whose work never left the local level stilldeserve mention, and they are encouraged to try again next year. Persistence is necessary in order to attain something you may desire.

This competition definitely portrays plethoric perks, but many of theparticipants weren’t in it solely for the money. This was an opportu-nity to bring awareness to others around the globe; these childrenwere able to present their ideas, along with their skill, to the masses. The Ministries of Tourism have expressed their interest in thecompetition. Next year’s event will prove even more innovativeand beneficial, and the children will submit tantamount treasures.

Located on the northeastern of the Caribbean coast of Colombiaand at the foothill of the highest coastal mountain range in theworld, “La Sierra Nevada”, Santa Marta has a dry climate withan average temperature of 82°F and a population of 410,309friendly people. Founded in 1525 by Rodrigo de Bastidas, it isthe oldest city on continental America, providing visitors a mixof history, Indian cultural heritage, charming people and anextraordinary diversity of landscapes and beaches.

The city proudly displays the signs of its past represented inancient buildings and military constructions, including laQuinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, an 18th century villa wherethe Liberator Simon Bolivar died in 1830. Today the villa isdivided in three main tourist attractions: the main house, which maintains its original from and period pieces, a secondhouse remodeled to accommodate the Bolivarian Museum ofContemporary arts and the Tayrona Museum.

Those seeking cultural Indian heritage will find La CiudadPerdida ('Lost City') a 14th century city built high in theSierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world highest coastalmountain at 18,942 foot (5,775 meters), it is one of the largestpre-Columbian towns discovered in the Americas. Its stoneconstructions are a vivid reminder of the high level of cultur-al and architectural development of its builders.

Unexploited paradises are found nearby the city, where morethan 3,000 hectares of land and coast forming the bays ofThe Parque Tayrona. In this national park and ecologicalpreserve the bays named Neguanje, Concha, Cinto, andArrecifes provide visitors a unique encounter with nature.Within the park is the important archaeological site ofPueblito where direct descendants of the ancient TayronaIndians may be found.

In addition to the above attraction, Santa Marta providescruise lines with a top of the line port. Located at latitude 11º15' North and longitude 74º13' West, the port serves users 24hours a day all year round, with seven docks with an averagedepth ranging from 40 to 80 feet and berths 94 to 250 metersin length. The Port of Santa Marta offers safe storage servicesat its warehouses and yards, and was the first ColombianMaritime Terminal Port to attain International Certificationunder ISO 9000.

In other words, what Santa Marta has to offer is a magicalencounter where colonial history, archaeological and ecolog-ical sites, Indian heritage, and multicolored beaches mix toprovide your passengers an opportunity to experience greatdiversity in a single place.

The Freestay Caribbean cruise-conversion program has beenendorsed by the tourist community, including business lead-ers, government officials, tourist promotion boards and HotelAssociations in 13 destinations – including Barbados,Cozumel and Cartagena, Columbia where the program willsoon debut.

"We anticipate that extending the Freestay Caribbean pro-gram to Belize and Mexico will have a positive economic andsocial impact on theWestern Caribbean region"said Al McNab of HydeShipping. "The program'ssuccess in other islandnations leads us to feel con-fident that it can facilitateincreased tourism whichwill certainly boost thelocal economy for theseports."

The program has maturedwell in Antigua, Belize,Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica,St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Croix and St. ThomasUSVI. Program participants work with program sponsorTropical Shipping and their island officials to design and dis-tribute special coins to cruise passengers.

The Freestay Caribbean 'Come Back And Stay In TheCaribbean' program capitalizes on the history of doubloons, like those thrown to the thousands of parade-goers during theworld-renowned Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans, where the coins are minted for each destination.

Each coin is etched with a famous landmark or logo of theisland or country it represents, the Freestay Caribbean web-site address and the U.S. toll-free number for the Ministry orBoard of Tourism.

Barbados, which launches the program this year, has chosenparliament buildings as their landmark.

The coins can be used to obtain specific discounts and other

travel incentives from participating hotels, restaurants andother vendors. Those incentives are published on the pro-gram's website, www.freestaycaribbean.com, which growsright along with the program.

The website, which has a fresh, new look after a recentfacelift, has seen more than a 1% increase in overall trafficsince May 2005. That translates to more than 1.4 million hitsand 35,000 visits in the past year.

Destinations such asAntigua, Belize andGrenada who work withtheir partners are seeingsuccesses along the way.

Officials in Antigua, whoare having a re-launch ofthe program this year, haveworked the program rightalong with island vendorsand have testified to theprogram's success.

“I am urging more hotels and other tourism partners such asrestaurateurs and entertainment providers to prepare specialoffers and become members of the Freestay Caribbean pro-motion,” Lorraine Headley, Director General of Tourism forAntigua and Barbuda, said in the May edition ofCaribbeanNetNews.com

Antigua's partners include The Admirals Inn, Galley Bay,Grand Pineapple Beach Resort, St James’s Club and ChezPascal. Each has its own page on the freestaycaribbean.comwebsite and all have seen a more than 2.5% increase in over-all traffic to their pages from this time last year.

Galley Bay's webpage received 78 hits in the month ofJune this year compared to 12 hits in June 2005. That's a5.5% increase in traffic in just 12 months to the Antiguanretreat's Freestay webpage. In like manner, Chez Pascalhas seen a 6.14% increase in traffic during the same time-frame, jumping to 50 hits in June 2006 from 7 in the samemonth of 2005.

As illustrated in the chart below, the Freestay Caribbean websiterecorded its highest rate of internet activity in the first and sec-ond quarters of 2006, with the second quarter of 2006 seeing analmost 8% increase in activity from the same quarter of 2005.

The success of the Freestay Caribbean program is dependentnot only upon website activity, but also on the efforts of mem-ber islands and individual participants to work the program inperson and on the internet to everyone's fullest advantage.

More vacationers are choosing more Caribbean destinationsmore frequently, and Freestay Caribbean understands theeconomic opportunities that brings to each of the participat-ing destinations.

From 2003 through 2005, the number of visitors to theCaribbean has grown by a total of 19%, according to the2006 Caribbean Trends in the Hotel Industry report fromPKF Hospitality Research, which is the research affiliate ofPKF Consulting, a consulting and real estate firm specializ-ing in the hospitality industry.

“I am often asked by hoteliers and tour operators, Why isTropical Shipping so supportive of the tourism industry whenwe are not in the business of tourism?” My answer is alwaysthe same, ...“We are in the business of tourism,” said TropicalShipping’s Assistant Vice President of Government Affairs,Jennifer Nugent-Hill.

“The growth of the Freestay Caribbean cruise conversionprogram into a real partnership with the Caribbean HotelAssociation and the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association isone of the many positive aspects of the program.

(Tropical Shipping President) Rick Murrell's commitment tothe sustainability of Caribbean tourism is a real commitment. The fact that we have extended the Freestay program toinclude other ocean cargo carriers in countries where ourcompetitors also do business is quite telling.

“But we know that when the economies of the Caribbeanislands grow, so will all of our individual companies. We aregrateful that Seaboard and Hyde Shipping support the programin Belize, Cozumel, Jamaica and soon in Cartagena, Colombia.

“We know that support says that they also recognize that itmakes good business sense as well. Their willingness to sup-port this positive effort to help maintain the key economicdriver for most of the islands can only be categorized as agood thing to do. This program is a good thing.”

With a change of name comes a change of pace. SergioBriceño and Pelicanos Tours has been a well-establishedtourism entity, but there are always improvements to be made.Though the past organization wasn’t irreparable, a tune-upwas in order and will be accomplished through much morethan a name change. Explora Caribe is an eco-adventure tourcompany, one which entertains and educates. Their new tourdefinitely gives more than just an industrial face-lift.

It’s almost proper for a company’s transformation to permit acomplete conversion. The newly established Temazcalencounter is more than just a Mayan tribute; it seems morelike a portal to the time of their reign, a glimpse and under-standing of their beliefs and rituals. As the body, mind, andsoul slowly soothe, they open themselves to this experienceand process. It seems almost ironic to desire a return to cavedwelling. We were meant to pass that stage of progressionthousands of years ago, but now tranquility is found inmankind’s original abode.

Even before the voyage begins, knowledge about Mayan his-tory, beliefs, and rituals is presented by the cultural guidealong the way in the van. Upon arrival, the stage is set by anauthentic Mayan speaking in their native tongue. Though thewords may go without understanding, the message appearsquite lucid: an experience of a lifetime is about to commence. As the guide brings you to this natural lair, it first seems thatyou have invaded some ancient ritual. There’s no certainty ifthe ceremony would continue without your presence, but aninherent interloping feeling is not present; there is a sense ofsecurity and belonging.

Once you step into the sauna, which is constructed similarlyto the cave’s limestone formations, pain and worry evaporate

like the water. In addition to the pouring of water and herbson the lava rocks, the guide provides ritualistic and refresh-ing splashes of water while issuing words that can only beunderstood on a different level. As the lights go out and thepercussion persists, it’s almost like reaching a state of nir-vana. Peace is reached as impurities are washed away. Thespirit and soul seem sublime through the song, meditation, and prayer; the body and the skin are purified, while the mindis rejuvenated.

After the Temazacal comes the cave’s counterpart to thecleansing: the cenote, which is a natural, refreshing freshwater pool. The dive in, or gradual descent via ladder, iseven more sensational because of the previous passage. The crystal clear water, which is constantly fed by under-ground rivers, is as clear as a mirror and showcases thelimestone formations beneath. Both the look and feel isutterly revitalizing.

If every tour is even remotely as remarkable as the tantaliz-ing Temazacal experience, Sr. Briceño will have no problemfulfilling his expectations, “Our goal is to surprise the guestswith an experience above and beyond their expectations in allaspects of the tour. We understand that each happy customerbrings four new ones and that one unhappy customer takesaway 20, so we really want to give our guests an outstandingtour; we give a learning adventure, an opportunity to experi-ence the many different aspects of Mexico in an excitingway. Each tour incorporates different aspects of the specificport’s charm, character, history, natural beauty, relaxationand or adventure all in one.” The experience does more thanillustrate the company’s goal; it is almost a mission statementin itself.
