Growth of our education and outreach programs prompted us to hire Rebecca Toms as part-time operations assistant this year. Becca, pictured above with MCF vice president Jon Gorham, previously worked at Natick Community Organic Farm in Natick, Massachusetts. Our new education director, Corey Thomas (above right), whose expertise is in animal science, came to us after earning his M.A. in agricultural education at University of Connecticut.

We continue to reclaim

fallow, overgrown land

and currently have

acres under

cultivation. The addi-

tional acreage provided a bountiful fall harvest

of broccoli, cauliflower,

kohlrabi, turnips, kale,

radishes and salad mix.

Farmer Steve grew more

than varieties of

vegetables, carefully

choosing crops to

provide our customers with a diverse offering

weekly and throughout

the season.

This year we gave more

than pounds of

fresh organic produce to

local hunger relief agen-

cies–like Woodbridge Human Services, Salva-

tion Army, Spooner

House and FISH New Haven–and more than

pounds since

2010.

Farm staffers helped organize a healthy food cooking competition where Valley middle school students competed for the most healthy comfort food. The winning dish was baked chicken with sweet mixed vegetable salsa.

We regularly attended

farmer’s markets in 2017, where we accept EBT

cards, and reach a

broader audience in Milford, New Haven and

Woodbridge.

At Massaro, we share our knowledge of grow-

ing one’s own food as

well as how to use it. In

2017, ~ people

attended farm workshops on topics in-

cluding fermentation,

growing cover crops, beekeeping, and

medicinal herbs.

The farm supports

community gardens, in-

cluding new ones in

Ansonia and Derby neighborhoods with

limited access to healthy

food. individuals

participated and more

than pounds of

produce was harvested.

Over the last year, farm

staffers instructed an

average of students

each week–from Anso-

nia, Bethany, Derby,

Middletown, New Haven, Shelton and

Woodbridge–teaching

them about sowing, har-vesting, composting and

pollinators.

In addition to our board

and committee members,

more than

volunteers put in

volunteer hours, planting, weeding, distributing

produce, maintaining

garden areas and provid-ing marketing and office

support.

More than

visitors passed through

the farm this year for

tours, workshops and events, like Celebrate

Spring, Family Fun Day

and Dinner on the Farm.

Our annual farm-to-table dinner, Dinner on the Farm, catered by Chef Denise Appel of Zinc Modern American Kitchen in New Haven, continues to be our signature event, selling out each year.
