    Joan Carolyn Freemantle

    October 27, 1926 – January 29 2014

Joan Freemantle spent her childhood in Douglaston, Long Island, New York. She attended Beaver College (now Arcadia University) outside of Philadelphia and graduated President of the student body with a degree in music. In 1948 she married Jordan Freemantle with whom she had three children. In 1987 Joan and Dan moved to Southern Shores where Joan continued to give piano lessons and with her students created memorable recitals and productions. Joan became involved in forming the Outer Banks Forum, an area-wide organization which brings a series of concerts to the area . She served as president of the Forum for seven years. While playing four hand piano pieces with her friends talk began of staging a concert venue for local talent, the first of these being the “Messiah Sing Along”, but this would take money. We found the money, but we had to be a 501 © [3] organization so the four friends got together and founded the Eastern Carolina Concert Society. That year we produced the Sing Along with about 60 singers. From there the organization took hold and with the leadership of Joan Freemantle, became a vibrant part of the music community of the Outer Banks. The Eastern Carolina Concert Society has been in existence since and has produced some very interesting programs. In 2002 Joan and Dan moved to Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk where Joan continued to organize musical and dramatic events at the retirement community. Eastern Carolina Concert Society dedicates this program and the entire year to Joan Carolyn Freemantle. We still miss her.
