We champion stories that need to be told, stories that challenge prejudice and disadvantage and have the power to change the world around us.

Our servicessounddelivery offers a wide range of digital storytelling services, from bespoke training for expert citizens and in-house teams, storytelling team days, to project partnerships, consultancy, story gathering and content creation.

We can help you maximise your impact through storytelling

• Unlock the potential of digital storytelling within your organisation• Amplify the voices of the people and communities you support• Connect to the media and those who have the power to create positive change.• Change perceptions, influence policy and raise funds through firsthand stories.• Support your grant recipients to discover how they can amplify their impact

Being the StoryBeing the Story is an annual event celebrating the power of thought-provoking storytelling. Born out of the Social Media Exchange Lightning Talks, Being the Story gives a platform to dynamic speakers whose inspiring stories will spark conversations, challenge perceptions and stimulate ideas. What unites all our speakers is how they have used a personal experience to create a positive change.

Our Being the Story talks have been viewed by over 70,000 people on YouTube and our speakers have gone on to deliver Google and TEDx talks and be featured across the BBC, Channel 4 News, the Guardian and Huffington Post.

We’re building on the success of our Being the Story events to launch a Spokesperson Network of media confident storytellers led by people with lived experience of the social issues challenging society today. Our Crowdfunder will help to fund this work and encourage a more diverse media where people with experience of issues are part of the conversations affecting them. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/beingthestorynetwork

If you have an inspiring story to tell, would like to partner on a Being the Story event, or be involved in our spokesperson network, get in touch to find out more. Being the Story 2019 is scheduled to take place on Friday 18th October 2019. beingthestory.org.uk

Write for sounddeliveryOur sounddelivery blog provides a platform for storytellers to share their firsthand experiences and for sector influencers to give their insights into the benefits and challenges of digital storytelling. “It was an absolute pleasure to work with sounddelivery this year. Jude is an inspiring leader, a very empowering facilitator and extraordinarily generous with her networks. She introduced us to journalists and producers which ultimately led to the parents we support getting some amazing opportunities to share their stories on Channel 4 News and Dispatches.”

Elhum Shakerifar@lalalooms www.hakawati.co.uk

“I produce films because I love stories, I love narrative. I work with people whose voices I want to hear.”

We are thrilled to welcome our keynote speaker, BAFTA-nominated producer, curator and storyteller Elhum Shakerifar. Elhum embodies our event theme – “Championing our Stories” making it her mission to amplify voices we need to hear through film and supporting others to do the same through her international film education projects.

Elhum was recently listed as a Producer on the Rise by Screen in their 2018 Brit50. She was recipient of the BFI Vision Award in 2016 for producing and distributing documentaries through her company Hakawati with the core ethos that a good story is all in the telling. Recent credits include winner of the BIFA for Best Documentary Almost Heaven (Carol Salter, 2017) and BFI/Sundance funded Even When I Fall (Sky Neal and Kate McLarnon, 2017). Her BAFTA nominated production A Syrian Love Story (Sean McAllister, 2015) was named #3 Best Film of 2015 by the Guardian. She also produced McAllister’s 2018 A Northern Soul for BBC2. Her work has been broadcast internationally and screened at festivals including Berlinale, IDFA and Rotterdam. Elhum is a programme advisor for London Film Festival for films from the Middle East, North Africa and Iran and Film Curator for Shubbak, festival of contemporary Arab culture. In 2017, she was nominated for the Arab British Centre’s Award for Culture and was awarded the Women in Film and TV Factual Award.

Elhum’s roots lie in the charity sector. She was Development Coordinator at Dost, a project of the Trinity Community Centre in East Ham, working with unaccompanied minors through a mix of education, psycho-social support and youth work. She also volunteered there for over 10 years and was awarded a Jack Petchey Young People’s Champion Award for her work. We can’t wait for her to share her experiences as a producer and how she has harnessed film to bring important stories to a wider audience.

Jude HabibFounder and Creative Director, sounddelivery

@judehabib • @sounddelivery sounddelivery.org.ukJude’s work has always focused on the power of human-interest stories and she is passionate about giving a platform to stories and issues that don’t get reported and strives to support people with lived experience – ‘Expert Citizens’ – to be confident to tell their stories themselves. Jude is a BBC trained reporter and producer with over 20 years’ experience of unearthing powerful stories. At the BBC Jude focused on human interest storytelling, developing and delivering high-impact social action campaigns across radio, television and digital including Ring Around Carers, Africa Lives, Hitting Home, Children in Need and Comic Relief.

She founded sounddelivery in 2006 to help charities and other socially-minded organisations navigate the changing digital landscape and find new ways of telling their stories. Key to this was building the skills and confidence across organisations and not just within the communications and fundraising departments.

Since then Jude has trained thousands of individuals in social media and digital storytelling, helping to raise awareness and inspire action on issues including mental health, domestic violence, sexual abuse, homelessness, the care system, poverty and life in prison.

Jude is a certified TPMA (Trainer Performance, Monitoring and Assessment) trainer and mentor and a Fellow of the School for Social Entrepreneurs.

“The storytelling training that sounddelivery has facilitated has been incredibly well received, both by attendees and by the partnership of commissioning organisations. The inclusive and person-centred approach to the day’s session has made it not only possible but advantageous to bring together people with very different stories, audiences, and confidence levels. The follow-up work bringing together the content and shaping it to suit the original brief has been excellent, as has the advice we have received from sounddelivery about what we need to do to give our storytellers the best quality support.”

AMPLIFYING THE VOICES OF THE PEOPLE YOU SUPPORTAmplify your organisation’s impact through firsthand storytellingNothing will show your organisation’s impact more powerfully than the authentic, well-told stories of the people you support. Lightning Talks

This year’s theme is ‘Championing our Stories’We’ve brought together three thought-provoking speakers who define this theme. These change-makers are really making a difference. We are delighted to have them here today for seven-minute Lightning Talks.

Live Tweeting InquestsThere’s a legal maxim that justice must not just be done, but it must be seen to be done. To date George Julian has live tweeted three coronial inquests, one court case and a psychiatrist’s fitness to practice tribunal. With the backing of monthly crowdfunders, she is currently supporting a number of bereaved families trying to secure scrutiny into the ‘care’ that their relatives received prior to their deaths.

We know that the life expectancy of learning-disabled people in the UK is about 25 to 30 years lower than those without a learning disability. We also know that these differences cannot be explained away as a result of illness or frailty. George’s work is highlighting how these premature deaths are linked to prejudice, bias and discrimination faced by people trying to access healthcare.

www.georgejulian.co.uk/blog/ • @GeorgeJulian

We are Everyone’s Children Travon Steadman works with Drive Forward Foundation, a London-based charity that supports care-experienced young people into employment, training and education. Before joining the team, he was a “service-user” and is a committed Ambassador and member of the charity’s Policy Forum. He is a strong believer in the power of lived experience to drive change and progress; highlighting the struggles young people face under government protection. His own journey has made him so much more aware of the struggle and pain of others, but also of how society looks at care-experienced people. A word that’s often used in conjunction with the care-experienced is “resilience”. But Travon refuses to accept this term, as he believes that it adds to the many misconceptions, prejudices and stigmas attached to the tag “care experienced”. He recently participated in a BBC3 production “Things Not to Say” on the topic of homelessness.

Why We All Need a F---it ListSix years ago at the age of 29 Emma Lawton was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It was the last thing she expected, Parkinson’s was something people’s grandmas got, right? A brain scan showed she had the early stages of the incurable, degenerative condition and she panicked. She realised she had a chance to tip life on its head. So, she did everything that previously scared her and swapping ‘no’ for ‘yes’ expanded her world. She became a spokeswoman raising the voice of her newfound ‘PD family’. This year she’s embarking on a project ‘called ‘The F---it List’ (rhymes with bucket) For 365 days she will be doing something new every day and blogging about it. The aim is to not only raise awareness of Parkinson’s but to prove that no matter what else you have going on in your life you can have adventures. LIVE NOW to the full. You don’t have to give up your job, you can stretch your horizons in your lunch hour.
