Dutch MastersSetting up your tournament

What you need• Make a 20 yard by 10 yard area with small target goals at opposite ends. If you do not have target goals use two cones a yard apart.

• Keep a collection of balls close by. Each match is played at high intensity so be ready to feed a new ball in quickly to keep the match moving.

• Dutch Masters can be played using one pitch or two and works best with six, eight, 12 or 16 players.

how to play� Depending on how many players you have, choose to play either 3v3 or 4v4.

• Print out the appropriate Score Sheet template (see pages 5 to 7), give each player a number and fill in the names of the players in the ‘Player name’ column.

� There are six matches in every Dutch Masters tournament. For each match in the tournament, arrange your players into teams as shown in the ‘Teams’ column on the Fixtures list.

� On your whistle, play a three-minute match using the rules on page 4.

� After the match, record the score in the ‘Result’ column on the Score Sheet.

� You then need to award points to each of the players:

All players who have been on a winning team are awarded 10 points.All players who have been on a drawing team are awarded 5 points.All players who have been on a losing team are awarded 2 points.

• Put the points scores for each player in the appropriate column under ‘Matches & Points’.

• Repeat the sequence until all matches in the tournament have been played.

• Add up the points for each player in the ‘Points total’ column and find out who is your Dutch Master!

Decide whether to play 3v3 or 4v4. Give each player a number, then use the appropriate Score Sheet (see pages 5 to 7) to record the names and numbers.

Record the scores for each player as you complete each match. When you havecompleted all the matches in the tournament, add them up to find the Dutch Master!

Use the fixture lists on the Score Sheets to organise your matches and ensure thatevery player gets the correct number of matches.

Play yourthree-minutematch usingthe rules setout on page 4.Keep a collection of balls close by so that you can feed them in to the play and keep the match moving.

Record the score of the match in the ‘Result’ columns on your Score Sheet.

add extra players� It doesn't matter if you don't have exact numbers, you can still play a Dutch Masters tournament. For example, if you have 10 players, you can play 4v4 with two players resting each match.

• You must ensure that each player rests for the same number of matches. You could do this by playing four matches and having each player rest for one match. Or you could play eight matches and have each player rest for two matches. Also, make sure you mix teams up as much as possible avoiding having pairs or trios of players on the same team too often.

• There is a Score Sheet with spaces for extra names on page 9 that you can use to organise a customised tournament.

use two pitches� If you have lots of players, space and manpower, you could set up two pitches and run two tournaments side by side. This would be a bit difficult for one person to monitor so you would need another coach to help you out, but having two matches running at once can create a great tournament buzz.

• There is a space on each Score Sheet for you to note the pitch number, so you can add as many pitches to your tournament as you can manage.

If you have the space and can find someone to help you out, playing two matches at atime is a great way to create the feel of a real mini tournament

If you have more than the ideal number of players, you can still organise a Dutch Masters Tournament, just rest players from each match. Make sure everyone rests for the same number of matches.

rules• Each match lasts for three minutes.

• There are no goalkeepers.

• There is no offside.

• Players can take as many touches as they like but must score with a one-touch finish.

• The ball cannot go above head height. If it does, a direct free kick is awarded against the offending team from where the ball was last touched.

• If the ball leaves play, instead of a throw-in players pass back into the area.

• Corners apply as normal.

Scoring• All players who have been on a winning team are awarded 10 points.

• All players who have been on a drawing team are awarded 5 points.

• All players who have been on a losing team are awarded 2 points.

Dutch MastersEvaluating your players

reward good playDutch Masters is very competitive and every participating player will want to get the highest score. But, if extra incentive is needed I’ve created a certificate you can award at the end of each tournament (see next page).Simply print off a certificate before you begin and write in the winning player’s name and points score at the end of the tournament.

Look for player influence• Dutch Masters is an excellent way of evaluating players. The small-sided format means that every player is involved and has the opportunity to influence the outcome, while the regular, rapid turnover of the ball tests players in attack and defence.

• With players rotating between teams you will quickly see who the most influential players are. This will be most noticeable on an individual level, but you will also spot patterns that highlight good pairings or small units. For example, If player 6 wins every match, he is likely to be a strong, influential player. If players 3 and 5 win every match when they play together they might have a strong understanding of playing together.

• Even scorelines give an indication of performance. At first look, player 2 might appear to be a weak link, losing most of his matches. However, perhaps those matches are lost by a single goal and with player 2’s team scoring relatively fewer goals. In this case we might surmise that player 2 is best suited to playing in defence or as a holding midfielder. Or perhaps we just need him to get forward more often. Likewise, if player 7 is always involved in 10-goal thrillers, perhaps they need to focus less on attack and a bit more on their defensive duties.

Interpret the scores• Scores can be evaluated on a session or season basis. If a player records an unusually low score in a given week they might be injured, unwell or unmotivated. If a player’s scores consistently improve, perhaps they’re putting in the effort to become a better player.If your top points scorer starts to slide down the table as the season progresses, they might be getting complacent or lazy.

• Ultimately, interpreting the results is entirely down to you. But make sure you evaluate players in a way that is meaningful and don’t jump to conclusions based on the statistics alone. While Dutch Masters is an excellent evaluation tool, it is not the be all and end all.

By recording scores over several weeks you be able to identify the strongest players. In this example, Joey Nolan maintains his high levels every week, while Bacary Song starts the season slowly but builds his performance over the weeks.

In this example, Player 6 is on the winning team in every match, which indicates that he is an influential player. Player 2, on the other hand is on the losing team in five out of six matches, which indicates that he could be a weak link.
