Students enrolled in the Paramedic program put in more than 1,200 hours of class time including 700 hours of clinical study in order to prepare to serve their communities in emergency situations.

The program follows the National EMS Educational Standards and is approved by the N.C. Office of Emergency Medical Services.

The Paramedic Graduation was held earlier this month on the SCC campus in Dobson.

Dr. Douglas Underwood, director of surgical services at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, was the guest speaker for the ceremony.

Underwood spoke to the graduates about the importance of a solid educa-tional foundation and emphasized the tremendous responsibility they have as healthcare providers. Additionally, Under-wood challenged graduates to forgo com-placency in their careers, instead striving for excellence in all that they do.

Special guests included SCC President Dr. David Shockley, SCC Vice President of Corporate and Continuing Education Dr. George Sappenfield, SCC Center for

Public Safety Division Chair Kirk Killon, SCC Emergency Medical Programs Coor-dinator Vickie Ramey, and SCC Medical Director Dr. Jason Stopyra. Each offered brief words of congratulation and encour-agement to those graduating.

Class President and Valedictorian Ethan Hooker spoke on behalf of the class to express immense gratitude for all who helped the graduates accomplish their goals and succeed in the program. Hooker was also voted “Most Supportive” by his classmates and instructors.

Additional superlative awards were given out during the ceremony also. T.J. Woodfin was recognized as “Most Dedicated Paramedic Student” as well as “Ideal Paramedic Partner,” and Amanda Holt was voted “Most Improved Para-medic Student.”

Eleven graduate from physical therapy program

White Plains Christian School held its graduation ceremony on May 27.

While this year’s class has just three members, school officials say next year will be a much bigger class with 12 juniors moving up.

The three graduates for 2016 were Austin Davis, Nathaniel Eas-ter and Jenna Newman. The two marshals for the ceremony were Lydia Brewster and Turner Delph.

The valedictorian was Jenna Newman, and the salutatorian was Nathaniel Easter.

The graduates are: Ginny Brasfield of King, Daniel Hall of Mount Airy, Jim Hollett of Winston-Salem, Chris-tina Kelly of Mount Airy, Katie Martin of Ararat, Va., Corey Norman of East Bend, Bryan Richardson of Winston Salem, Laura Rooks of Lowgap, Antho-ny Sexton of Mount Airy, Tommie Stan-ley of Mount Airy, and Sarah Wilson of Winston Salem.

SCC’s competitive Physical Therapist Assistant program prepares graduates to work in direct patient care settings under the supervision of physical therapists. Assistants work to improve or restore function by alleviation or prevention of physical impairment and perform other essential activities in a physical therapy department.

Upon completion of the degree pro-gram, graduates are eligible to take the licensure exam administered by the North Carolina Board of Physical Ther-apy Examiners; of the recent graduates,

there is a 100 percent pass rate for first-time test takers. Their 100 percent exceeds the passing rate average of 86 percent of the United States Accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Programs.

Graduates of Surry’s PTA program can seek employment in a variety settings including general hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, outpa-tient clinics, and public schools. Five of the program’s recent graduates have already acquired full-time employment as licensed physical therapist assistants.

Surry’s 2016 PTA cohort celebrated not only by attending the recent SCC Commencement Ceremony, but by holding a pinning ceremony and cook-out at Fisher River Park in Dobson to share their accomplishment with family and friends.

Seven students recent-ly graduated from Surry Community College with an associate degree from the Electronics Engineer-ing Technology (EET) program.

The graduates were Jordan Easter of Ararat, Va., Jacob Galyean of Mount Airy, Luis Garin of Elkin, Samuel Harris of Dobson, Jordan O’Neal of Ararat, Carolyn Shock-ley of Tobaccoville, and Benjamen Underwood of Yadkinville.

SCC’s Electronics Engineering Technology program prepares stu-dents to apply basic engi-neering principles and technical skills to become technicians who design, build, install, test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify developmental and production electronic components, equipment, and systems such as industrial and computer controls, manufacturing systems, communication systems, and power elec-tronic systems.

Each student graduat-ing worked on a unique major project to demon-strate the knowledge they gained from the EET program. A few notable projects included a Nixie tube clock made using display tubes from the 1970s to show the time, a Morse code trainer used to teach people how to read Morse code and convert it to English, and an air quality sensor that monitors ambient temperature, humidity and dangerous levels of certain gases.

Additionally, all seven graduates success-fully passed the exam to receive their Certified Electronics Technician certification from the International Electronics Technicians Association. While this certification is not required to work in the electronics engineer-ing industry, it will set Surry’s graduates apart from others in their pro-fession when applying for jobs and seeking promo-tions, the college said.

Many of the EET pro-gram’s recent graduates have already procured employment or higher

education opportunities due to their hard work and the high employ-ability of those in the advanced manufactur-ing field with multiple students having lined up post-graduate profession-al plans as early as six months prior to finishing their degrees.

Computer and Elec-tronics Engineering Technologies Division Chair Dr. Clayton Work-man worked with stu-dents and companies to place students Samuel Harris and Jordan Easter in part-time positions at Hirsch Solutions and Dorsett Technologies, respectively, in the fall of their second year at Surry with the intent to transition to full-time employment upon com-pletion of their studies; both Harris and Easter enjoyed the additional experience they gained while part time, and have transitioned to full-time employment with ease.

Furniture Industries Inc., which is off to a great start, and will continue during his education at UNC-Charlotte in the fall when he begins pursuit

of a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

DOBSON — Three students at Surry Community College were recognized recently for their accomplishments.

One student from each of the 58 com-munity colleges in the North Carolina Community College System receives the Academic Excellence Award every spring.

Recent graduate Mackenzie D. Ammann of Mount Airy, an Associate in Arts major, was the North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award recipient for SCC.

President David Shockley recognized Ammann at the morning SCC Com-mencement Ceremony on May 14 where she received a commemorative gold medal and a plaque from the North Carolina Community College System.

Ammann graduated with an Associ-ate in Arts degree at SCC while receiv-ing her high school diploma from the Surry Early College. She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill to major in Business and Economics.

“As I prepare to make the transition from a community college to a four-year institution, I find it incredibly hard to say goodbye to a campus that has not only encouraged me to find my own voice in this massive world, but to also take the time to identify with those around me,” Amman says.

“As a student and tutor at Surry Com-

munity College, I have had the pleasure of networking with other students whose determination towards fulfilling such far-reaching aspirations for them-selves and their families has inspired me to be all I can possibly be as well.”

According to the N.C. Community Colleges System website, selection of the Academic Excellence Award is based on a single selection from each college. Selection is consistent with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society cri-teria and includes the recipient being currently enrolled, having completed at least 12 semester hours in an associ-ate degree program and maintaining a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.25. Colleges may use addi-tional scholarship criteria beyond these minimum requirements.

• Benjamin “Ben” Simpson of Yadk-inville was the 2016 nominee from SCC for the Dr. Dallas Herring Achievement Award.

The award was established in 2010 by the North Carolina Association of Com-munity College Presidents to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, considered one of the founding fathers of community colleges in North Carolina. The award is bestowed annually upon a current or former student who best embodies Dr. Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far

as they can go.”Simpson is working towards an

Associate in Arts and an Associate in General Education. He plans to transfer to Appalachian State University where he hopes to participate in ROTC and become an officer in the Army National Guard. He is currently a Private First Class in the Army National Guard, which he joined in September 2015.

During his time at SCC, he was inducted into both honor societies offered at SCC, Phi Theta Kappa and the National Society of Leadership and Success, the latter of which he served as the president. He was also the Student Government Association’s secretary.

• JaMeire Bryant of Jonesville was nominated for the Governor Robert W. Scott Leadership Award.

The award, also sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Com-munity College Presidents, was created in 2004 to recognize student leadership on a statewide level while also honoring former Governor Scott, one of the earli-

est supporters of the N.C. Community College System and the fourth System President from 1983 until 1994.

Bryant graduated in May with a Para-legal Technology degree with plans to transfer to Appalachian State Univer-sity to study Political Science.

He was very active on Surry’s campus having served as the Student Govern-ment Association President and Vice President and also as a College Ambas-sador. Additionally, Bryant was the President and Vice President of the Paralegal Club on campus. He was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa and the National Society of Leadership and Suc-cess while a student, the latter of which he served as Vice President.

Through all these organizations, he helped with blood drives, community holiday events, attended statewide conferences, conducted campus tours, assisted the SCC Student Services staff with orientations and summer camps, and served on the college’s Board of Trustees.

DOBSON — Twenty-six Surry Community College stu-dents recently graduated from the Associate Degree Nursing program.

The Nursing Pinning and Graduation Ceremony was held at Temple Baptist Church in Mount Airy.

Lory Puckett, nurse educator at SCC, was the guest speaker. She encouraged graduates to maintain professional boundar-ies emphasizing that nursing is one of the most trusted profes-sions. Additionally, Puckett reflected on the ways in which faculty can learn from their students.

Dr. David Shockley, SCC president, welcomed the gradu-ates followed by remarks from Dr. Yvonne Johnson, Associate Dean of Health Sciences at SCC. Shockley also presented

the diplomas, while SCC Nurse Educator Kiena Williams pre-sented the pins. Dr. Michael B. Miller, SCC Dean of Business, Technologies, and Health Sci-ences, performed the presenta-tion of graduates.

The Surry nursing program graduates provide

nursing care to clients through-out their lives in a number of different settings. Students can choose to complete the ADN or Associate Degree in Nursing, which is a two-year program enabling students to sit for the examination leading to licensure as a registered nurse. Currently licensed practical nurses (LPNs) can also choose to complete the LPN-ADN program,

which is a three semester program enabling students to sit for the examination lead-ing to licensure as a registered nurse.
