SOCK-TOBER COLLECTION

Our Sunday School students and families are taking an active commu-nity based approach with offerings this year. In place of a monetary offering we will be collecting goods to donate to various organizations in our community. Our Sunday School students will be able to experi-ence the impact their generosity can have on our neighbors. During the month of October, students will be collecting socks to be donated to The Center for Youth. There is a strong need for socks in larger teen sizes, but all sizes are welcome. We invite the entire con-gregation to join us in our efforts. Should you wish to contribute, please add your socks to the "Donation Station" in the Sunday School area in Founder's Hall. Be sure to say hello to our students and let them know that you are supporting their collection efforts.

The ALY Forum is an inclusive and safe environment filled with thoughtful discussion and acceptance for differing viewpoints - we’ll also sneak some physical activities and laughter in there, too! The first ALY Forum will focus on us getting to know one another and setting respectful ground rules for our future discussions. In the forums to follow, we will discuss a variety of religious topics, including those that you suggest! We will also use the forum time to think of outside activities that we want to do together. The activities will represent the foundation of the ALY group and include fellowship (having fun together), service (helping others together), and ministry (learning about God together). Hope to see you there!

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP POTLUCK DINNER

Sunday, November 4, 4:00 to 6:30 pm

12 Corners Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall Welcome our new neighbors from faraway lands such as Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria, Burma/Myanmar and Nepal. We will all share food and fellowship at this abundant potluck dinner. Our friends from Catholic Family Center, the local agency that sponsors refugees moving to the Rochester area, and members of 12 Corners and South Presbyterian churches join us in this outreach ministry. Space is limited for each congregation (20 adults PLUS their young children….small children are not included in the count) and reservations are required. Please bring a dish to pass that will serve at least 8 to 10 people. Because many of our guests are Muslim, dishes with any kind of pork should be avoided. Electric outlets for crockpots are limited, so try to bring your dish as warm as possible, or able to wait in one of the warming ovens. Additional spaces are available for volunteers. Volunteers are needed for setup, cleanup, hospitality and greeting, parking lot, kitchen and buffet table management. Watch for details and signup sheets on the bulletin boards in the Narthex and by the of-fice entrance, as well as in the Sunday bulletin. Come and join us at the table, share a meal, be a welcoming and healing presence for people who have made a long and ardu-ous journey to their new home….come and love our new neighbors. For more information, contact Avis Hooper, Pastor Gail, or Margy Peet.

PASTORS PAGE

Six Worries a Day

She wakes up with a start and looks at the clock next to her bed. It’s 3:15am and she is wide awake. Her mind begins to fill with thoughts of work and family, things to get done, deadlines to meet, problems unresolved. Worry and anxiety begin to settle in. If this has ever been your experience, welcome to the club. Some of us are chronic worriers, some are non-worriers, and the rest of us fall somewhere in between. The question is not if we worry, but how we handle our anxious thoughts and feelings. I’ve read that the people of Guatemala have a custom of dealing with anxiety in a unique way - using wooden boxes in which six tiny dolls are wrapped in brightly colored thread. According to tradition, if you tell each doll one your worries before going to sleep, the dolls will work on relieving the worry during the night. Since there are only six dolls in a box, a person is allowed only six worries a day! Personally speaking, I’ve never tried the doll method. But if we are worried about worrying - if worry interrupts our sleep, distracts us at work, or keeps us from the peace and wholeness God intends for us – the following five-step plan may be helpful:

Recognize when the worry begins. Interrupt it before it consumes your thoughts.

Write down the worry. This action may lessen the need to carry the

thought in your mind. Have a worry session. Set aside a period of time to go over your

worries one by one, to see how they might be resolved. Discard some worries. Some things are worth worrying about, oth-

ers are not. Release it to God. Placing our anxious thoughts in God’s hands can

be the first step in knowing the peace that God promises and offers us in facing our days with confidence.

We also might consider this advice from Martin Luther:

When I am weary with problems

I go tend my pigs; I do not let myself go round and round,

pondering my troubles. For the human heart is much

like a millstone in a flour mill; when it grinds wheat,

it produces flour; when it grinds without wheat,

it only wears itself down! The human hearts is like that;

unless it is occupied with something good, the devil works into the empty space

with bad thoughts, temptation and worries which wear us down.

Whether we have six - or sixty worries – may the God of peace

put our hearts and minds at rest. Peace in all things, Pastor Gail

BREAD FOR THE WORLD SUNDAY October 21

Join us this day in worship as we join a collective Christian voice with thousands of churches across the country in praying for those who struggle with hunger - and to rededicate ourselves to actions to end hunger here and abroad. During worship, we invite you to take part in an Offering of Letters - urging our nation's decision makers to continue programs that provide hope and opportunity for people liv-ing with hunger. And so we pray: Holy Spirit guide us, that those who suffer from the deep wounds of poverty may be helped...and healed. Amen.
