Background

The ATO has been working to support schools in developing and

delivering tax education since 1994 through its School Education

Program.

In June 2008 we conducted an evaluation of the Program.

A key recommendation from the evaluation was to develop an interactive

educational resource to better appeal to secondary school students.

We contracted Education Services Australia to develop a digital

education resource to assist students in years 10-12 understand the

Australian tax and super systems.


Developing the resource

Research was conducted with schools to guide development of the

resource.

Education Services Australia mapped the resource to curriculum for

each state and territory.

Training materials were developed to help teachers use the resource.

A pilot with 30 schools (students and teachers) tested the resource and

gained some initial feedback.


Tax, Super + You Tax, Super + You, includes:

– four subject modules that focus on the basics of the tax system: personal tax, business tax, and super

– activities that include quizzes, forums and tests– digital interactives that provide an engaging learning environment for students.

It automatically tracks students’ progression through the resource. Each module has a range of suggested lesson plans. As a teacher, you will be able to: create courses by selecting content to suit your

curriculum; track the progress of your students, and access online support.


Module 1 – Tax 101

Tax 101 addresses topics such as: What is tax and why do we need it? Tax: who, what, how and why? How is tax revenue spent? The Budget, taxes and spending The history of tax in Australia The role of the ATO.


Your tax Income and income tax Working and paying tax Completing your tax return Calculating tax due What other taxes do I have to pay? Fixing a tax problem


Business What is a business? Choosing a business structure Running a business Explaining business taxes How does GST work? How is business tax collected?


Super addresses topics such as:

What is super and how does it work?

Where does super money come from?

What do I need to do about super?

How do I choose a super fund?

Interactives

Tax, Super + You has four digital interactives that provide an engaging

learning environment for students.

Setting up Tax, Super + You at your schoolTax, super + you is available now, for free at:

www.taxsuperandyou.gov.au

To use it:

Schools need to register and nominate an administrator

The administrator can then add teachers

Teachers can then create a course for each class.


Features for teachersAs a teacher you can:

Set up a course for your class to use

Customise the course to suit the needs of your students

Track the progress and performance of your students.

Rubrics to help teachers assess classroom-based activities

Current usage of Tax, Super + You Tax, super + you was officially released on 10 July 2012 by the Hon

David Bradbury, Assistant Treasurer Within 24 hours, 15 schools had registered Registrations have now reached:

– Number of public course users registered = 1,918

– Number of secondary schools registered = 281

– Number of secondary schools that have set up courses = 75
