The Cardiovascular
System:
The Heart
Transport system pump Using blood as the transport medium, the
heart continually propels oxygen, nutrients, wastes, into the innerconnecting blood vessels that service body cells.
Heart:
The HeartHere you can see the size and parts of the heart
Size and Location
Flat baseIts apex points
inferiorly toward the left hip
apical impulse caused by the apex
of your beating heart contacting the
chest wall
The lungs flank the heart laterally and partially obscure it
We depend on this dynamic organ for our very own life
• About the size of a fist, the hollow, cone-shaped heart is snugly enclosed within the mediastinum.
• The heart extends from the second rib tothe fifth inter-costal space.(About 5inches)
This is where the heart is locatedThis can give you an idea of what size the heart looks like
Coverings of the Heart
The heart is enclosed in a double-walled sac called the Pericardium.
The loosely fitting superficial part of this sac is called the Fibrous Pericardium. This dense connective tissue
protects , archors it to surrounding structures, and prevents overfilling of the heart with blood.
Covering of the heartThese are the layers of the heart
Two Atria Two Ventricles The internal partition that divides the heart
longitudinally is called the Interatrial Septum, where it separates the atria, and the Interventricular Septum, where it separates the ventricles.
Chambers of the Heart
Chambers of the heartThis picture reveal the four chambers of the heart
The heart is two side-by-side pumps, each
serving a separate blood circuit. The blood vessels that carry blood to and from
the lungs form the Pulmonary Circuit, which serves gas exchange.
The blood vessels that carry the functional blood supply to and from all body tissues constitute the Systemic Circuit.
Pathway of blood
Pathway of blood these are the arteries and veins in which blood flow through to the heart
Conclusion
The Heart serve as one of the most important functions of the body. The ceaselessly beating heart has intrigued people for centuries. People has thought of the heart as the source of emotions. While these theories have proved false, we do know that the emotions affect the heart rate. Overall, the cardiovascular system provides the transport system "hardware" that keeps blood continuously
circulating to fulfill this critical homeostatic need.
