Solid Insulation

• The life of the insulation is the life of the transformer.

• Insulation is the weakest link in the transformer.

• Insulation system is the most important part of the transformer to maintain.

• Requires early and prompt attention.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This is an approximation of the relationship between DP and tensile strength. New paper before it is wound onto conductor or put into a transformer core and dried has a DP value of about 1200 and tensile strength of about 17,000 psi. In the manufacturing and especially the drying process in the transformer factory, the paper breaks down a little bit. So, new paper in a new transformer has a little lower DP and tensile strength. We actually see DP of between 800 and 1000 for new transformers. As the paper ages in service, the cellulose chains break down through the action of heat, oxygen, moisture, and other conditions we will talk about in more detail directly. As the cellulose chains break down, they get shorter. So, the DP goes down. As the DP goes down, the tensile strength measured in psi goes down also. This makes sense, because the paper gets weaker as the cellulose breaks down. The end of reliable life numbers, in DP and Tensile Strength, are actually definitions taken from the Guide for Loading Oil Immersed Transformers – C57.91. These are 25% retained (75% loss of) tensile strength and 200 DP. The two are not exactly equivalent end points, time-wise. What end of life represents is that the paper has weakened to the point where it cannot be relied upon to withstand any sort of significant disruption. This does not mean that the transformer will fail right away – instead it means that it will probably fail if put under mechanical stress.

WHAT HAPPENS?

• Untreated, your oil will attack the paper and drastically cut short the life of your transformer.

• Oil tests reveal the condition of the oil, paper and therefore the transformer.

Liquid Screen Test: Acid Curve Showing Absorption Effect of Paper on Acid

Oil Without Copper WireOil, when aged alone shows a low level of decay products

Oil + Copper Wire without Paper InsulationWhen copper is placed into the oil, as in a transformer, it acts as a catalyst and the oil aging rate is greatly increased.

Oil + Paper Wrapped Copper WireWhen paper is wrapped around the copper, as is in a transformer, the aging still occurs, but the decay products go into the paper insulation.

OIL RECLAMATION

Page 27: Presentation to: Western Mining Electric Association...Presentation to: Western Mining Electric Association • World’s Largest Database of Test Records • 4,000,000 Customer Transformer

THE PROCESS…

1. Filter oil through 0.5 micron filter.2. Heat oil up to 200 F - turning it into solvent.3. Filter with Regenerative Fullers Earth (FLUIDEX) to

remove oxidation by-products.4. Apply vacuum to remove moisture and gases.

HOW IT WORKS…

Multiple passes of transformer oil through heat, vacuum and fullers earth returning the oil to near

virgin condition and cleaning the paper.

WHEN TO RECLAIM . . .

• Before the oxidation inhibitors are depleted.• While the oil is still in good condition.• WHY? The oil is filtered through the paper, removing contaminants. While the

oil still appears clean, the paper is actually gathering sludge and deteriorating.

What oil testing is done?

• Testing new oil.• Testing oil in newly installed

transformers.• Testing of in-service oil.

– Routine and non-routine– Monitoring– Diagnostic

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Testing new oil is done to determine whether the oil will work well in the application, and whether the manufacturer is supplying oil that meets the agreement between buyer and seller. Manufacturers of transformers also typically include a slate of tests to be done on new installations in the first hours, days, and weeks of operation. Do these tests is necessary to maintain validity of the warranty offered. We are not going to address the new oil tests or the new installation tests to any great degree. What we want to concentrate on are the tests done on in-service transformer oil. We are going to present and discuss a package of tests that should be done routinely. We will also talk about other tests that may be run to diagnose specific conditions. We will describe these and the definitions of terms as we work through this session.

Testing new oil.

• Qualifying new suppliers.• Buying oil for especially large,

expensive, or critical units.• Acceptance testing.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
When qualifying new suppliers or buying oil for specific units, you are concerned with comparing a customers’ standard production to your requirements – functionally. For acceptance testing, you run a sample for specific tests selected to compare that actual oil being bought to the oil quality that was agreed upon between buyer and seller. This is more of an independent quality control check. If the oil fails to meet the requirements, it is not accepted for use. Virginia Power story.

Testing oil in new equipment.

• Confirm quality of oil used.• Confirm proper processing and

installation of oil.• Confirm internal cleanliness of

electrical equipment.• Confirm proper operation for first

hours, days, weeks of service.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The transformer manufacturer and the owner determine ahead of time what kind of oil and what kind of processing are needed to ensure proper functioning of the transformer. Testing is done to review these parameters. Also, testing is done to confirm proper operation of the equipment. The idea is that some defects will show up early in the operation of the equipment. Testing may catch these so that the defects can be corrected before doing serious damage. It minimizes the risks that the manufacturer incurs by offering a warranty.

Testing in-service oil.

• First routine interval.• Purposes of routine testing:

– Oil aging and oxidation– Contamination– Routine monitoring or operation– Evaluate condition of solid insulation

• How well is the oil continuing to fulfill its functions?

• Non routine testing.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Teaching points – 10 month initial interval. What do routine tests look for? How is the oil performing? At what point does it need to be maintained. Non-routine tests may be indicated by abnormal results for the routine tests, or they may be for purposes of troubleshooting specific conditions.

Four Functions of Insulating Liquids :

• Protect the Paper Insulation• Provide Dielectric Strength• Provide Heat Transfer (Cooling)• Testing Serves as a Diagnostic Tool for

the Condition of the Equipment

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Review. First is most important – and goes away first upon aging of the oil. Dielectric and heat transfer hold on longer as oil ages. Testing for condition is what we are going to talk about in this session.

Oxidation Inhibitor Content (Monitoring test)

• Almost all new mineral oil is inhibited.

• Uninhibited oil has inhibitor content less than 0.08%.

• Canada standard is 0.4% inhibitor; rest of North America is 0.3%.

• Under normal circumstance, active inhibitor content will prevent the start of oil oxidation.

Moisture Content (Monitoring test)

• Modern transformer operate at very low moisture levels.

• Free-breathing transformers typically use desiccant breathers.

• Low ppm content are advisable, but this information alone is not adequate for maintenance.

• Use oil temperature data at time of sampling to calculate % saturation and % moisture by dry weight.
