SOME KEY MILESTONES COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2022

Official occasion for candidate cities to declare intention to bid

took place on 22 July 2014 in Glasgow. Edmonton and Durban

were the only two candidate cities bidding for 2022 Games.

31 March 2014 was the very last day for expression of interest to

bid the City of Durban joined the race.Mar2014

Nov 2014

Minister of Sport and Recreation South Africa, submitted a memorandum to Cabinet requesting Cabinet’s endorsement of South Africa’s intention to bid & host the Commonwealth Games in 2022 in Durban.

Cabinet approved and endorsed the intention by the City of Durban to bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and directed SRSA to establish a Bid Committee to develop the bid proposals to host the Commonwealth Games. Cabinet further directed SRSA and the National Treasury to consider the business plans, the proposed budget and funding model and revert to Cabinet before the announcement of the host cities.

2014 resolution

• SA & Durban’s Bid to host the CWG 2022 was lodged with the CGF by the Minister of Sport and Recreation at a formal ceremony that took place in London on 2 March 2015.

• 3 March deadline to establish the bid committee

• National Interdepartmental Technical Forum (NITF) formed and convened ahead of the evaluation commission meetings . Also part of the preparations for the Evaluation Commission meetings

April 2015

• The Evaluation Commission of the CGF visited the City of eThekwini led by high powered Commonwealth Games Federation delegation as well as events specialists.

• Affiliate members of CGF visited Durban City to evaluate the South Africa’s value proposition

July - August 2015

• Security assessments for the Durban City 2022 has been finalised and finalised with NatJOINTS

• SRSA to request cabinet to note the progress, the financial implications, and to approve South Africa’s bid to host the 2022 CWG. Cabinet approved the request based on funding guarantee of R 4.32bn

Aug 2015

• CGF announces Host City for 2022 CWG.Sept 2015

• SRSA met with the CGF (Commonwealth Games Federation) to provide an update, and the status regarding outstanding commitments regarding the Host City agreements.

• The CGF requested these be finalised by April 2016.Jan 2016

• SRSA convene an inter-governmental meeting with:

•City of Durban / KwaZulu-Natal Province National Treasury / Office of the Deputy President

•A progress report presented. Practical implementations provided to conclude outstanding commitment matters, in particular the financial guarantees.
