AND ETHICAL CORP.”
Reported by:
Perico, May angela c.
What is RESPONSIBILITY?
•"Responsibility means to be willing or to be able to respond to somebody for something.
•"Moral responsibilities derive either from one´s interpersonal relationship to a person whose welfare is in question or from the special knowledge one posesses, such as professional knowledge that is crucial to an aspect of another´s well-being“
by: Carolina Whitbeck
Professional Responsibilities:
Engineers understand professional responsibilities primarily at the level of individuals and organizations, as specified in the codes of ethics of all engineering organizations. Though the codes differ in emphases and details, all engineering codes say that engineers should be technically competent and should continue to improve their competence.
Types of Responsibility that an Engineer has:
•Causal Responsibility
•Role Responsibility
•Legal Responsibility
•Moral Responsibility
PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
Professional people and those working in acknowledged professions exercise
specialist knowledge and skill. How the use of this knowledge should be governed when
providing a service to the public can be considered a moral issue and is termed
professional ethics.
Professional ethics
is a set of standards adopted by a professional community. Professional
ethics are regulated by standards, which are often refereed to as codes of
ethics.
IMPLEMENTATION
Most professions have internally enforced codes of practice that members of the profession must follow, to prevent exploitation of the client and preserve the integrity of the profession. This is not only for the benefit of the client but also the benefit of those belonging to the profession. Disciplinary codes allow the profession to define a standard of conduct and ensure that individual practitioners meet this standard, by disciplining them from the professional body if they do not practice accordingly.
GENERAL PRINCIPLES
“Engineers, in the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public”
-National Society of Professional Engineers
“A practitioner shall, regard the practitioner's duty to public welfare as paramount.“
-Professional Engineers Ontario
Codes of engineering ethics identify a specific precedence with respect to the engineer's consideration for the public, clients, employers, and the profession.
The following is an example from the American Society of Engineers:•Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public and shall strive to comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their professional duties.•Engineers shall perform services only in areas of their competence.•Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.•Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, and shall avoid conflicts of interest.
• Engineers shall build their professional reputation on the merit of their services and shall not compete unfairly with others.
• Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and dignity of the engineering profession and shall act with zero-tolerance for bribery, fraud, and corruption.
• Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers, and shall provide opportunities for the professional development of those engineers under their supervision.
• Engineers understand professional responsibilities primarily at the level of individuals and
organizations, as specified in the codes of ethics of all engineering organizations. Though the
codes differ in emphases and details, all engineering codes say that engineers should be
technically competent and should continue to improve their competence
