ZSOMBÓ



Where is it?

• There are 2,826 villages in Hungary.

• Zsombó is situated in Csongrád county, in theSouthern Great Plain region.



• We live close to thecounty seat, Szeged.

• It is often called the Cityof Sunshine.

• Szeged lies on the banksof the River Tisza.

• This is the third largest

city in Hungary; over170,000 people live here.

• It is famous for salami andpaprika.

The Nearest City



• According to the firstwritten record, it wascalled Forro Somboja.

• The name of our villagecomes from the word‘zsombék’ (tussock).

•

This is a plant that can befound all over the marshyarea.

Etymology



• The beginning dates back to 1717.

• Zsombó was originally a farmstead centre.

• It became independent of Kiskundorozsma in 1950.

A Bit of History



• The population is about 3,500.• The average age of the people is 37.

• Most of the population is Catholic.

Population



• People started to collectmoney in order to build achurch into the centre of

the village.• The construction began

in 1924 and finished in1927.

• The church was built in apure Romanesque style.

• The church was built tothe memory of theBlessed Virgin Mary.

• There is always a hugefestival on the firstSunday of September,when people celebrate

Virgin Mary’s birthdayand also remember thisgreat cooperation.

• Zsombó belongs to theGreat Plain, so the land

is flat.• There is a bigger forest

by the main roadtowards Szeged, and a

smaller one near thefootball pitch.

• One third of the population works in agriculture.

• There are several family farms.

• The soil is sandy, so thefertility is poor.

• Thanks to the climate, we can

produce various fruit andvegetables such as peach,strawberry, grapes, potatoes,tomatoes or paprika.

• Peach also appears on ourcoat of arms.

• Floriculture is unique inZsombó. The Gyuris familyruns a flower farm.

They grow a selection ofplants that provide flowers allyear round.

• Another interesting fact is

that they use thermal waterheating.

Industry



• There is another Gyuris familywho runs a soda waterfactory.

•

Fröccs (the Spritzer) is one ofthe most popular alcoholicdrinks in Hungary.

• It is actually wine (mostlywhite wine) mixed with goodold-fashioned soda water, notwith mineral water.

• We even have our ownbrewery.

• Fenyves Sörház makes thepopular red beer.

• Folia Cargo Pack is a family enterprise.• This company produces flat film for milk,

agricultural films, industrial films and snack bags.

• Asparagus is a well-known company producingdecorational accessories (like plastic bags,wrapping paper, ornaments) mainly for flowershops.

• This is our most famoustourist attraction.

• It was built in 1747.

• The cellar was built frommeadow limestone.

Sándor Rózsa Tavern



• The tavern was named aftera notorious outlaw of theHungarian Alföld.

• Sándor Rózsa lived in the19th century.

• He had an adventurous life:the legends portray him asa noble-spirited brigandwho robbed the rich to helpthe poor.

• János Tombácz lived inthe 20th century.

• He was the symbol of

folk life in the Szegedarea.

• He is considered one of

our greatest peasantstory-tellers.

Old School Buildings

• At Wesselényi Folk HighSchool there are variouslectures on different

topics.

• Királyszék School has

been renewed and it isgoing to operate as aforest school.



• Attila József Community Centre and Library plays avital role in the life of the village.

• It organizes different clubs and events, e.g. the

popular Village Days in June.

• The other important place is the local footballpitch, which gives place to various events like theVillage Festival in September or the FootballDerby between Zsombó and Csólyospálos.
