    When do I use the present SimpleWhen do I use the present Simpletense?tense?

    y To describe repeated actions or habits.(e.g: I get up at 7 oclock every morning).

    y To talk about things that is always or generally true.

    (e.g: The sun sets in the west)

    y To describe a permanent situation or a condition with no definite start or

    finish but which is true now.

    (e.g: We live in London)

    When do I use the present SimpleWhen do I use the present Simpletense?tense?

    y With adverbs of frequency such as always, usually, often(e.g: She often studies in the library)

    y With time expressions such as every day/ week/ year, in the morning/afternoon/ evening and at night.

    (e.g: I go to the gym once a week)

    y To express future meaning with actions and events that is part of a fixed

    timetable.

    (e.g: The train leaves at 8:30)

    y We add s to most verbs: walks, gets,

    y We add es to verbs that end in sh, ch, ss or o: finishes, goes, catches ,

    y If a verb ends in a consonant +y, we change the y to i and add es: tries,studies,

    e.g.y I like football, we like football, he likes football.

    y I watch a lot of films, we watch a lot of films, he watches a lot of films.

    y To talk about something which is in progress at the moment of speaking.(e.g: It is raining now)

    y To talk about something which is in progress around the present, but notexactly at the time of speaking.

    (e.g: Peter is looking for a job these days)

    y To talk about situations which are developing or temporary.

    (e.g: Computers are becoming more and more important in our lives)

    y With adverbs such as always or constantly to express complaints andannoyance.

    (e.g: He is always calling me late at night)

    y With time expressions such as now, at the moment, at present, these days,

    nowadays and today.(e.g: Im writing an e-mail right now)

    y To talk about future arrangements or plans.

    (e.g: Im meeting Peter tomorrow)

    The present continuous is made by having am, is or are + the verb + 'ing'.

    NOTE! Sometimes you can use the present continuousto talk about the future.

    e.g. I am going on holiday on Friday.

    Present continuousPresent continuousYou can use the present continuous when you aremaking plans. It's useful to talk about definitearrangements in the near future, as in the example inprevious slide

    'I am working late tomorrow.'

    e.g.

    What time are you leaving tomorrow?I'm leavingat8 O'clock.

    I'm goingout tomorrow.

    I'm gettinga new car next week.

    Going toGoing to

    'Going to' + the verb is also useful to talk aboutplans. It suggests that something is decided.

    e.g.
