The motherboard is the main circuit board inside your PC.A motherboard is the central printed circuit board (PCB) in some complex electronic systems, such as modern personal computers. The motherboard is sometimes alternatively known as the main board, system board or on Apple computers, the logic board. Every components at some point communicates through the motherboard, either by directly plugging into it or by communicating through one of the motherboards ports.

slots like PS/2 connector used for connecting mouse and keyboard to the motherboard.

It has USB ports to connect data cable , pen drives etc.

Serial connectors. Parallel ports connect printer to

motherboard. There is a VGA port to attach the

monitor. There are audio and video ports also.

PROCESSOR SLOTS

Type of motherboard chosen depends on the type of processor being used.

It has a heat sink or fan located on top of it and so it can be located easily.

It acts as a base for the processor. We can fix the processor on it by

judging the cut that is made on the slot.

PCI SLOTS

PCI stands for peripheral component interconnect bus protocol.

It is used to insert external cards like LAN card, Sound card etc.

In some mother boards where a separate AGP slot is not present even the graphics accelerator card is inserted in PCI slot.

RAM SLOTS

These are used for connecting the RAM to the motherboard.

These are basically connected via north bridge to the motherboard main control circuit i.e. processor.

Usually black or white in color and 3 to 4 in number.

They are provided with attachment pins to avoid unusual movement of RAM.

CMOS BATTERY

Motherboard includes a separate block of memory made for low power consumption.

CMOS RAM chips are kept alive by a battery even when the PC’s power is off.

CMOS stands for complementary metal-oxide semiconductors.

NORTHBRIDGE AND SOUTHBRIDGE

The south bridge provides connections to i/o devices , such as the PCI bus, USB and PCI express devices.

The north bridge connects directly to the processor via the front side bus (FSB). It also connects to the AGP.

SMPS CONNECTOR

It is SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY connector which provides power supply to the CPU.
