The Church is essentially missionary “since it is from the mission of the Son and the mission of the 1Holy Spirit that she draws her origin, in accordance with the decree of God the Father.” The missionary

commitment through the “mission ad gentes” (mission to the nations) is essential for the communities' growth. By recognizing the existence and the urgency of that commitment, Pope John Paul II reveals the fruits of that mission in his encyclical letter Redemptoris Missio: “I see the dawning of a new missionary age, which will become a radiant day bearing an abundant harvest, if all Christians, and missionaries and young churches in particular, respond with generosity and holiness to the calls and challenges of our

2 time.”

Each year, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith (SPF) suggests a spiritual animation for ecclesial communities celebrating World Mission Sunday (WMS) which will take place this year on

thOctober 19 . “To Sow is to Love: Grow in Love!” is our theme for World Mission Sunday 2014 which is the turning point of the missionary month, a moment for Christians from all over the world to express their spiritual and material solidarity towards the poorest Churches of the world.

The Animation Kit that we suggest is composed of spiritual animation leaets: The Global Prayer Hour, the Missionary Novena with Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and Saint Francis Xavier, the Missionary Mass and the Homily Hints, among others. Our animation kit has been made in a way that best suits your needs. That is why it can be adapted to hour-long animations, used during the week leading up to WMS and, of course, on World Mission Sunday itself. You will also nd enclosed a leaet that provides information on the projects supported by the SPF in French Canada, the donations collected on WMS 2013 and the geographical name of the places where the money is sent.

In 2013, French Canada's collection reached a total of 631 558, 55$. All the donations of the collection made on World Mission Sunday form the “Universal Solidarity Fund” and are sent to the poorest Dioceses of the Universal Church in order to help them carry out health, education and pastoral projects. That collection cannot be used by the vestries, or the economical comities, or any Canadian Dioceses for parochial or humanitarian projects within a Community or Parish. All the ordinary collection, in other words, the offertory collection, which includes return envelopes (it is not enough to place a basket for the missions at the exit of the church), has to be sent to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith's national ofce.

From year to year, the generosity of the Catholic Church in Canada is undeniable as thousands of missionaries have evangelized peoples – and still do so – in Asia, Oceania, Africa, Eastern Europe, South America and the Caribbean. It is true that the way in which Mission is experienced has changed, as well as the cultural, economical and social realities. But World Mission Sunday remains for many Christians, the only moment in which they can support those men and women who experience the “missio ad gentes” and thus, participate in the Universal Church's life.

“Our own times offer new opportunities to the Church in this eld: The collapse of oppressive ideologies and political systems; the opening of frontiers and the formation of a more united world due to a development in communications; the afrmation among peoples of the evangelical values that Jesus incarnated in his own life (peace, justice, brotherhood, concern for the needy); a type of soulless economic and technical development that only urges the search for the truth about God, about man and about the meaning of life itself. God opens to the Church, the horizons of a humanity more prepared for the sowing of the Gospel. I feel that the moment has come to invest all the Church's strength for the new evangelization and the mission ad gentes. No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples.” (Redemptoris Missio, 3)

World Mission Sunday is an annual event that is essential for the growth of the poorest dioceses in Africa, Asia, Oceania, Eastern Europe and South America. It allows the Universal Church to “renew her missionary commitment”. (RM, 2) It is above all, the occasion in which all Catholics redene themselves within the essential project that Christ entrusted to his disciples on Pentecost: “Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.” (Mt 28:19-20)

We don't ignore the negative tensions and tendencies that we experience within the churches of Christian traditions such as Canada. For many of our brothers and sisters, the “ad gentes missio” is not a concern anymore. “This tendency is certainly not in line with the directives of the Council and subsequent teachings of the Magisterium. Internal and external difculties have weakened the Church's missionary zeal towards non-Christians, and this is a fact that all believers in Christ should worry about. Indeed, in the history of the Church, the missionary zeal has always been a sign of vitality, just as its weakening is a sign of a crisis of faith.” (RM 2)

The Church is essentially missionary

The Church is a community of people deeply-rooted within a history and culture. In accordance with their particular charisma, they commit themselves in following Christ and proclaiming his love message. The Second Vatican Council presented the Church's missionary identity within the Trinitarian Mystery well. Founded by the Trinitarian love for Humanity and Christ's life, the Church continues to follow our paths. This mystery made visible by Christ and to which the Church of the baptized is the visible sign and instrument. The universal Church as well as the local Church, is essentially missionary by nature and she must remain faithful to the Lord's mandate. Animated by the Holy Spirit, not only she must go “to” the boundaries, but also, she must live “in” the “world's peripheries” in order to experience Christ's mission with other people.

The “ad gentes missio”

Even in a context of poverty and restructuration, the local Church cannot close its doors to the Lord's mandate as well as to the “ad gentes missio”. “Make the tent you live in larger… (Isa 54: 2). To broaden one's horizons and leave behind our own boundaries, with the purpose of proclaiming and sowing the Word of God, suggests openness to others. It suggests an interior movement, “ad intra” and an exterior movement, “ad extra”, in order to inhabit a different space, either geographical or social. To do everything possible implies a cultural shift that creates a new way to do things and to experience the Communion.

The “ad gentes missio” refers to the passage in which the Lord sends out his disciples: “Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples” (Mt 28:19). Our mission is to become missionary disciples on a permanent mission and also humble sowers of the Word of God in order to love as Jesus did, humbly and poorly. This mission involves communicating with other worlds, cultures and peoples; it also implies to accompany them in building a better world. Thus, the “ad gentes missio” is mainly the work of a sower who went out to sow grain” and proclaim “the Good News. In our context of indifference and atheism, the “ad gentes missio”, which requires the contemplation of the actual world and prayer, emphasizes this permanent mission at the heart of the world: disciples sent towards our poorest brothers and sisters in order to proclaim and experience the Word of God.

“Once there was a man who went out to sow grain” (Mark 4:1-20)

This parable is intended for crowds and it is used for the disciple's teachings. Jesus is the master of parables. The parable of the Sower is included between two invitations: “Listen!” (Mk

4:3) and “Listen, then, if you have ears!” (Mk 4:9) This story is based on nature and everyday life; it gives pause for thought on the strength of the Word of God. After three more or less good soils, the Word shows all its strength: “the plants sprouted, grew, and bore grain: some had thirty grains, others sixty, and others one hundred.” (Mk 4:8) The transforming power of the Word of God invites us to have Faith and Hope. This parable focuses on the one who listens and hears the word resonate within his heart. He's the soil that receives the grain. The grain being the Gospel, we are questioned about how we welcome it in our lives. This parable makes us see God's heart. What are the obstacles that prevent me from listening?

A parable that talks to us

In order to proclaim the Gospel, we must “go out” like the sower and walk on the world's paths. It is the action of sowing that will open new paths to the Gospel; enliven God's gifts that we have within us and grant the one who “listens”, to become a witness and disciple, missionary of the Word of God, without expecting anything in return except the grace of love that gives life. In this way, God does his work. The Word takes root and bears fruit, “some had thirty grains, others sixty, and others one hundred”. It is a parable of hope and life. It states the faith and hope in God's love that acts in silence with the purpose of growing new life. It is a parable that talks to the must vulnerable people of our world. How do I listen to the Word of God, with which ears?

Openings

People are hungry and thirsty of a consoling word that encourages and changes life. The Church is becoming more and more “catholic”, in other words, she's becoming “universal”. She is beautiful because of the men and women in all continents and all the cultures that compose her. The rst disciples, Peter, Luke, Matthew, John and the others, as well as the rst communities of believers were sent throughout the world on Pentecost and, despite the persecutions, the revolts, the martyrdoms, the atheisms and agnosticisms, and all the political-media attacks, the Word of God that was proclaimed, bore fruit. The world has never been more religious and in search than our own times. The Bell Center and Internet have replaced the Temple and the paths of Palestine, but Jesus is the same Lord. There are always receptive people who are willing to accept the Word that changes life. It is up to us to sow! What kind of soil am I? What fruits will I grow and bear?

“The sower went out to sow and to love.” Lord, help me become a fertile soil. To sow is to love!

Have a great World Mission Sunday!

Mt 22:1-14 - The Wedding Feast

Today's Gospel shows us, with a parable, that many guests do not respond to the invitation. It is something that we understand clearly today when we take into account that our churches are more empty than full. It is not only the attendance to religious services that is decreasing. There is also a large decrease in everything related to religion. It is difficult to find volunteers to teach catechism and even young people who are willing to be catechized. The parable tells us that the king sent out his servants to the streets and asks them to invite other guests, guests that do not fit the original description of those initially invited to his son's wedding. Eventually, the banquet hall was filled with people and despite the guest, who was not wearing proper clothes, the wedding took place and everyone enjoyed the banquet. It was a great celebration.

Next Sunday, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. We are like those servants that the king sent out to tell the invited guests to come. The answers that we might receive are strangely similar to those found in the parable. Some guests are more concerned about their fields and their businesses; others will even ridicule us and mock about the banquet that we offer in the king's name. We must find different guests. He told us to go and make disciples of all nations. Today, we must invite people to become Christians based on their own circumstances, to be Christians differently. We must remember that love is the essence of Christ's message. Let us invite to the feast those who are able to love and those who need to be loved. This will be the theme for World mission Sunday: TO SOW IS TO LOVE.

October 13, 2014 Ferial MondayLk 11:29-32 - Jonah's Miracle

Jesus' listeners wanted a miracle, some sort of prestidigitation trick, in order to believe that Jesus was really a messenger of God. Faith is not the result of a razzle-dazzle, but comes from an intimate encounter with God. That is why Jesus spoke about the miracle of Jonah. Like Jonah who spent three days inside the great whale, Jesus will also spend three days in the tomb before his resurrection. It is less spectacular than any sign from heaven, but its deeper value is much more wonderful. Jesus says that the people of Nineveh will stand up against this generation because they converted when they heard Jonah's preaching even if it wasn't a homiletic wonder.

In his long conversation with God, as described in the fourth and last chapter of the Book of Jonah, Jonah found the true reason of his conversion, the true sign that every person who seeks the truth about God should find:

“Jonah was very unhappy about this and became angry. So he prayed, 'Lord, didn't I say before I left home that this is just what you would do? That's why I did my best to run away to Spain! I knew that you are a loving and merciful God, always patient, always kind, and always ready to change your mind and not punish.” (Jon 4:1-2)

Jonah would have wanted to preach about a strict and vengeful God, one who would have had all human flaws. By showing us a God who is love, by loving him and loving all humans as he did, we will become the missionaries that the Church needs today.

Lk 11:42-46 - The Pharisees' Malediction

Jesus was very strict with those who were legalists (today's fundamentalists). A missionary must acculturate himself; he has to seek for goodness in the mentality of the people he wishes to evangelize. He must not try to impose principals and rites that are not relevant to them.

In 1659, the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith published this instruction: “What could be more absurd than introducing the cultures of France, Spain, Italy or even any other European country into China? You are not a messenger of our culture, but of faith that does not destroy cultural traditions of other people, but conserves them if they are not bad.”

Today's missionaries, and all Christians, must be missionaries. They have the duty to present the Gospel in its essence and not to be against the customs and different ways in which some people pray, express their faith and, even sometimes, believe in God.

Mt 25:31-46 - I Was Hungry and You Fed Me

Today, we celebrate the feast of the first Canadian saint. She was called the Mother of universal charity. Yet, today's Gospel talks about universal charity. Through this speech, Jesus explains clearly that by loving the poor and the needy, we are his true servants and friends. Marguerite is a good example of that love. All suffering and poverty finds assistance through her. She sowed love around her. She was the instrument that God used to love the poor. What a wonderful example received in preparation for World Mission Sunday! To sow is to love, to love the needy in order to love God himself; all the Christian and missionary vocation is presented to us right there. As our country is still considered missionary, this saint showed us what to do under those circumstances. Today, we realize that our country is becoming missionary again. Let us follow the example of Saint Marguerite and let us find, as she did, means to sow God's love around us and everywhere on Earth.

Lk 11:37-41 - Ritual Ablutions

The Jews were scandalized because Jesus didn't do the ritual ablutions before eating. Jesus explains clearly that what is important is not the outer rite, but what lies within the heart. Some persons have a heart filled with impurities, but they take good care of their appearances. It is, the heart, it is love that is important. We should not judge others by their appearance. Formerly, we used to say that the cowl does not make the monk.

Next Sunday, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday; we are all invited to become missionaries and proclaim the Good News, the Gospel of love. When we proclaim the Gospel, we might have a tendency to insist too much on the exterior details and not enough on love, which is essential. Even secular rites are called to step aside and make room for simpler things, things that really reflect love which doesn't have to be concealed behind the ritual screen of time and history. Saint Augustine said: “Love, and do what you will”

October 17, 2014 Friday, Saint Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch

Lk 12:1-7 - The Pharisees' Yeast

This text from the Gospel talks about truth and trust. The Pharisees' yeast is treacherous; it is what raises the dough, but it is not the truth, or God's true love; it is what keeps up the appearances, but in reality, it is a sham. All fear and hesitation that we might experience, in order to bear witness of our belonging to the Lord, our use of the true yeast of love, must vanish through trust in God, who knows that we are more valuable than any bird.

This coming Mission Sunday invites us precisely to sow love and use the good yeast so the evangelical dough will raise and fulfill the world. In order for unleavened bread to become bread, it only requires the yeast of love. In order for the Good News to become widespread, it is necessary that we become interested in its propagation; that we become aware of our global responsibility. Snow can only melt if it is exposed to the sun's rays; hatred and mistakes can only disappear when love floods the world.

October 18, 2014 Saturday, Saint Luke, the Evangelist

Lk 10:1-9 - The Disciples' Missionary Outreach

Today, it seems that Jesus sent his disciples to do a field experience. He doesn't deny the difficulty of what he asks them: like lambs among wolves. The task is immense: There is a large harvest, but few workers to gather it in. He doesn't target the place of their apostleship: Whenever you go into a house...Whenever you go into a town. Despite the problems than can occur and that will certainly occur, remember that the Kingdom of God has come near you!

Today, Jesus sends missionaries to proclaim the Good News, just as he did in his time. He sends each and every one of us. There are many ways to preach: through words, but also through example and service. It is important to realize that all of us are sent. Whatever the place, the house or the city, the neighborhood or distant country, towards our fellow countryman or a stranger, we must accept our departure, leave behind our comfort and evangelize, according to our own possibilities and situations. What is important is to proclaim the Gospel.

Thursday of ordinary time

Lk 11:47-54 - Building the Tombs of the Prophets we Killed

Jesus continues to strongly criticize the Scribes and the Pharisees. He proclaims the truth. He dares to attack those who present themselves as good people. Proclaiming the truth is often something audacious. As soon as Christ's speech is finished, they try to find reasons to get rid of him. At first, they tried to get rid of him because he questioned society's most important persons. Then, they nitpicked to see if either one of his words will give them reason. Eventually, they will kill him.

The Church must proclaim the Gospel even if she is human and sinner. The Gospel is concerned about what lies within the heart. Obstacles will come from those who go by appearances and forget the prophecies to admire the prophets' tombs. Like the disciple who is not above his master, the missionary should often expect to be criticized as Jesus was. Nevertheless, it is not a reason to stop the evangelization of peoples.

th29 Sunday of Ordinary Time (for those who have decided to use the ordinary Mass)

Mt 22:15-21: Tribute to Cesar

“Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God.” In the first reading, Isaiah told us: “I alone am the Lord, the only one who can save you.” Saint Paul who wrote to Timothy tells him not to become attached to discussions that really don't favour God's plan. It is clear that it is necessary to pay your taxes if you want the proper functioning of the state. Once you have done this, it is important to know what God's plan is. The state has laws and control systems to make sure that we pay what we owe. God does not use the power of coercion upon us. He shows us his universal law, which is love. Then, he gives us the freedom of choosing to accept or ignore his law. In any case, love does not impose itself; it appears at our door and waits for us to open it.

Today, it is World Mission Sunday. Jesus, who is our master of love, asks us to never forget his last commandment, the last request that he made to his disciples before his ascension: “Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples” Today, we are asked to think about our human brothers who live in the poorest countries and to be generous in order to help them as well as all the people who bring them the Good News. To be generous doesn't mean that we have to give money. This would be too easy and it could be a soulless donation. We must love all peoples, accept all strangers who live near us, show our love in every way, without forgetting to pray.

October 19, 2014 World Mission Sunday

Mt 13:3-9 - The Parable of the Sower

This parable is normally used with the purpose of inviting us to become good soil; it calls us out so we can grow within us the Word of God. It is certainly an excellent practice. Today, we would like to look for another lesson in that text from the Gospel. The sower sows everywhere, not only on good soil. Who is this sower? It is Christ, of course, but it is also each and every one of us who are invited to follow him and to sow as he did. Everyone has to receive the seeds, the Good News of the Gospel. What are those seeds that have to be sowed everywhere? It is love. This year's theme for World Mission Sunday is: TO SOW IS TO LOVE.

Today, there are many defeatist people who believe that there is no point in sowing the Word because they say that people don't listen anymore. We are under the impression that we are preaching in the desert. It is possible that the real problem is that we sow words rather than actions. Love is not only a nice sentimental poem; it is an act of dedication, self-denial and caring for others. Today, on this World Mission Sunday, we are invited to be generous, to sow love by donating money according to our capacities and generosity, but also by showing an interest in our brothers and sisters who live in distant countries that we still consider countries of mission. Prayer is a gift, and praying is something that everyone can do; it is free seeds that bear good fruit when we have faith.

To sow is to love: Grow in love! (Mk 4:1-20)The purpose of this animation is to prepare World Mission Sunday that will take place on October 19, 2014.The suggested theme for that particular Sunday is: To sow is to love: Grow in love! (Mk 4:1-20)

He used parables to tell them many things. “Once there was a man who went out to sow grain. As he scattered the seed in the field, some of it fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some of it fell on rocky ground, where there was little soil. The seeds soon sprouted, because the soil wasn't deep. But when the sun came up, it burned the young plants; and because the roots had not grown deep enough, the plants soon dried up. Some of the seed fell among thorn bushes, which grew up and choked the plants. But some seeds fell in good soil, and the plants bore grain: some had one hundred grains, others sixty, and others thirty.”And Jesus concluded, “Listen, then, if you have ears!” (Mt 13:3-9)

1- Reading of the Gospel and sharing as suggested

Introduction

Let's sow so that we may be able to hope!

It is absolutely clear that if we don't sow, we cannot expect to harvest. The goal of every missionary action is to make the Gospel grow.

Now, let's read a passage from the Gospel of Matthew

After each exterior factor, let's take a moment of reflection. If any of the participants want to share a small comment, he or she can do so.

Let's consider which factors are exterior to the Sower. Then, we will think about what the Sower can do.

The seeds: They are the Gospel. After 2000 years, the Gospel message is still new, still fresh and very good. We still call it the “Good News”. It is very difficult to have better seeds than that. If anything goes wrong, it is certainly not because of the quality of the seeds.

The soil : In order for the seed to grow and bear abundant fruits, the soil must be good. In today's world, there are all sorts of soils, some are stony or have brambles and others, have all sorts of imperfections that can hinder a good growth. But, there's also good soil. What do we have to do then? We have to do what the Master did: to sow everywhere and let it grow.

The weather : A good alternation of rain and sunshine are necessary so that the growth will be as we have hoped. Cyclones and hurricanes are harmful to the growth. The Sower has no control over the weather. Even artificial watering can only partially correct the lack of rain.

3- Final prayer

Response: Lord, make us missionaries of your love.

Lord, you sowed your message of love so everyone could hear it and notice how you are a God of love R.

You want to bring today's men and women together in your proclamation of love. R.

To sow with love:There is a common proverb that says: everything is in the way. In the Bible, the book of Proverbs says:

To sow gestures of love : Here are some examples of gestures of love that we can “sow”:

Jesus went on to say, “The Kingdom of God is like this. A man scatters seed in his field. He sleeps at night, is up and about during the day, and all the while the seeds are sprouting and growing. Yet he does not know how it happens. The soil itself makes the plants grow and bear fruit; first the tender stalk appears, then the head, and finally the head full of grain. When the grain is ripe, the man starts cutting it with his sickle, because harvest time has come.” (Mk 4, 26-29)

For me, apostolic courage consists of sowing the Word by bringing it to those to whom it is destined. To give them the beauty of the Gospel, the wonder in encountering Jesus and letting the Holy Spirit do the rest. The Gospel says that it is the Lord who makes the seeds grow and bear fruit. (Gianni Valente, Des Bidonvilles de Buenos Aires au Vatican, Bayard, p.37)

Now, let's read a passage from the Gospel of Mark.

Better to eat vegetables with people you love than to eat the finest meat where there is hate. (Prov 15, 17)

Find other examples of gestures of love that we can spread around us.

For each of the examples given -those written on this paper and those found by the participants - each person has to remember a particular moment from her life experience in which she was a witness or a beneficiary of such actions and share them with the other participants.

- To smile and warmly greet a person that we meet.- To visit a sick person and offer a prayer for her recovery.- To accompany a lonely person.- To invite a stranger for a cup of tea.

Pope Francis says practically the same thing in his own words.

2- What can the Sower do in order to improve the odds of a good growth?

Do as the Master did:This means sowing without thinking about the seeds that will fall on unsuitable soil. We are all called to become sowers. The Lord will take care of the rest.

Response : Lord, make us missionaries of your love.

You ask us to sacrifice what is unnecessary and, sometimes, even more in order to help the needy. R.

You ask us to lovingly sow your love and you tell us to trust the Spirit for the rest. R.

Lord, we want to be available for sowing; we are aware that we are limited in strength, but we also know that you can accomplish many things with us despite how little we have. R.

Let's go and make Disciples of all Nations, by teaching them to do what the Lord has taught us. R.

Prayer to Mary:

Mary, our Good Mother, after the Annunciation you left in a hurry to bring the Good News to Elizabeth; you became the New Testament's first Missionary. All your life, you were attentive towards your Son and to others. In Cana, your love for others made your Son perform his first miracle before his time. You gave him the opportunity to show his love towards humans. At the foot of the Cross, you witnessed his ultimate act of love. On Pentecost day, you were present at the birth of his Church. We admire your constant availability. You have always been present along the path of God's love.We want to do as you did. Intercede for us.Amen

Spiritual Animation for Young People:

Introduction

The Lord calls everyone in order to sow love. You too are called! Whether you are a child, a young or an elderly person, you are all invited to love as he did.Read Jesus' call as well as the answers from our friends. Write your comments on the spaces provided and share your answers.

QUESTION : How can you answer Jesus' call in your everyday life experience as well as the environment you live in?

If there are several young people in the group, we can ask them to read successively the following speech bubbles: Jesus, a Character, and “ You ”.

You are my friends and I'm certain that you want to help me sow love. That's all I ask my servants. I only hire sowers of love. I want love to reign on earth. Love is slightly like mangoes. There are hundreds of varieties that are somewhat different but they're all delicious. All are good for your health and contain many vitamins and nutrients. In Haiti, we love the Francisque mango, in Vietnam, it is the Cambodiana mango and in Costa Rica, we'll say that it is the Maya mango that is the best of all. Love also has many “varieties”. Name one of them and explain why it is one among many. Also share with us how you will put into practice your variety, your form of love.

I think that mutual aid is a form of love. When we see a person who needs help, we do our best to help him or her. That's what we call love. There's an elderly woman who lives on the second oor of my house, and who doesn't have many friends. I noticed that she had a hard time bringing her garbage bags downstairs. So, each week I will help her with that task.

What do you think about David's idea?

I would say that compassion is a form of love. If someone is sad, we are nice with him, we smile and we tell him that we understand his sadness and we want to be close to him. I have a classmate who is always sad. Not long ago, her mother died in a car accident. That's why I invite her to my house. Sometimes, I ask my mother to spoil her by preparing maple fudge, just like her mother used to do. She told me that she didn't want to cry in front of others, but that she felt comfortable to do so in front of me, and this did her good.

Fraternity is denitely a form of love. I think that we must try to consider everyone as brothers and sisters, something that's easier to do especially when people look like us. There are immigrants, for example, who don't speak our language very well, who wear clothing much different from the fashion trends we know, who practice another religion and who don't dare to get involved with us. There's a boy in my class, his name is Muhammad. He's from Egypt. Many boys don't dare to go near him. Every now and then, I invite him to my house. I even got him interested in basketball (He should make a good basketball player because he's very tall for his age). Until now, he still seems a little reserved, though. But I think that it will change.

I think that in order to be able to show love to everyone, we must smile to everyone. There are many students in my classroom that don't like the history teacher very much. When she comes in, most of them greet her by pouting their lips. I suggested to other students that we greet her with a smile. I've noticed that ever since we started to act this way, her courses seem to have become more interesting.

According to me, true love is when we are willing to make sacrices and give to those who are in need. Sometimes, I deprive myself of sweetmeats or some songs that I would normally download online so I could use the money to help a charitable organization or a person in need.

To love is to forgive. When we can forgive those who tricked us, those who insulted us in front of others and ignored us, then we can do as Jesus did and love our enemies. A boy in my classroom wrote bad things about me on Facebook and I replied by letting him know that he wasn't nice, but that I forgave him. Then, I told him that writing bad things was wrong, specially coming from a person with good values like him.

To love is to attribute good intentions to others. Many persons say that people, who do good deeds and generous gestures, always have something in the back of their minds. When we have family gatherings, Uncle Tony plays the piano and makes everyone sing. Some say that he wants attention, but I say that he wants everyone to be happy.

So, do you know other varieties of mangoes, other varieties of love?

You!

I would like to thank all my friends. They showed me that they know much more than varieties of mangoes. They know different ways to sow love around them. In order to make disciples of everyone, we must sow love in all its forms before everyone. If you do all that I have told you, my heart will be happy and yours too.

Lord, Jesus, we love you very much, but we know that you love us even more. Along with you and following your mother Mary's example, we want to sow love throughout the world. Grant us then, the strength and courage to love the world as you do. We, who want to love you as Mary did. Amen.

Global Prayer Hour

Each year, in Africa, in Asia, in South America, in Europe and in Oceania, Christians are invited to unite for the Global Prayer Hour for the mission of evangelization. We invite you to plan this hour of missionary prayer and make it a place in which children, young people and elderly people can experience a deep communion with peoples, cultures and specially the most vulnerable people in the world. United with all peoples, let's pray so that the Word of God sowed within our hearts, may allow us to open ourselves to brotherhood and solidarity with the Churches of Asia, Africa, Oceania, South America and Eastern Europe.

Together, let's prepare ourselves in front of the Lord so that we may be able to discover the sprouts of life in our life and our Church. In a moment of silence, let's pray and ask him to become sowers of the Good News.

Now, let us welcome the Word of God by listening to this passage from Mark's Gospel. (Mk 4:1-20)

“Again Jesus began to teach beside Lake Galilee. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it. The boat was out in the water, and the crowd stood on the shore at the water's edge. He used parables to teach them many things, saying to them: “Listen! Once there was a man who went out to sow grain. As he scattered the seed in the field, some of it fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some of it fell on rocky ground, where there was little soil. The seeds soon sprouted, because the soil wasn't deep. Then, when the sun came up, it burned the young plants; and because the roots had not grown deep enough, the plants soon dried up. Some of the seed fell among thorn bushes, which grew up and choked the plants, and they didn't bear grain. But some seeds fell in good soil, and the plants sprouted, grew, and bore grain: some had thirty grains, others sixty, and others one hundred.”

And Jesus concluded, “Listen, then, if you have ears!”When Jesus was alone, some of those who had heard him came to him with the twelve disciples and asked him to explain the

parables. “You have been given the secret of the Kingdom of God,” Jesus answered. “But the others, who are on the outside, hear all things by means of parables, so that, 'They may look and look, yet not see; they may listen and listen, yet not understand. For if they did, they would turn to God, and he would forgive them.'”

Then Jesus asked them, “Don't you understand this parable? How, then, will you ever understand any parable? The sower sows God's message. Some people are like the seeds that fall along the path; as soon as they hear the message, Satan comes and takes it away. Other people are like the seeds that fall on rocky ground. As soon as they hear the message, they receive it gladly. But it does not sink deep into them, and they don't last long. So when trouble or persecution comes because of the message, they give up at once. Other people are like the seeds sown among the thorn bushes. These are the ones who hear the message, but the worries about this life, the love for riches, and all other kinds of desires crowd in and choke the message, and they don't bear fruit. But other people are like seeds sown in good soil. They hear the message, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirty, some sixty, and some one hundred.”

Contemplation

Universal prayers

Following a moment of silence

Community gesture

By meditating the Word of God that we have just heard, let's take a few minutes to open, in faith, our interior senses in order to hear the words, the gestures and the attitudes of Jesus resonate within us. Let us establish a relationship with Jesus, here and now.

By using our memory and our imagination, let us imagine the places, the characters, the noises and the conversations. (A moment of silence) Let's take the time to imagine that we are present at the scene seated with the disciples. (A moment of silence) Let ourselves be touched inwardly by the environment, the mood and the emotions experienced by the characters. Let's awake our heart to the presence of God, of Jesus.- Let's think about our place in relation to Jesus, as well as the emotions that we feel in his presence. (A moment of silence)- Let us take a few minutes to “speak to God” as one may speak to his friend.

Let us offer those callings to the Lord.

Let us pray for Africa through the intercession of Saints Josephine Bakhita and the Uganda Martyrs.Lord, we see that peace and justice efforts are being made, but often, we are helpless witnesses of the dramas, the violence and the poverty

that are experienced in Africa. Open our ears, our eyes and our heart to the beauty, to the human and spiritual wealth of the African continent. May Africa be for us the witness of hope for a new world. Let us pray to the Lord.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

- Form small groups of 3 or 4 persons in order to share the fruits of this moment of prayer (5 minutes)- Invite each participant to write a word, a phrase or a prayer on the small grain-shaped card

- Place the card in front of the altar where lies the Word of God and a candle.

Missionary Novena with St. Therese of the Child Jesus and St. Francis Xavier

Leaflet - 6

To sow is to love: Grow in love! (Mk 4:1-20)

In preparation of World Mission Sunday

Introduction

Jesus established the missionary vocation on Ascension Day, when he asked his disciples to become missionaries.

“The eleven disciples went to the hill in Galilee where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him, even though some of them doubted. Jesus drew near and said to them, 'I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.'” (Mt 28:16-20)

The same idea is resumed in the Acts of the Apostles.

“When the apostles met together with Jesus, they asked him, 'Lord, will you at this time give the Kingdom back to Israel?' Jesus said to them, 'The times and occasions are set by my Father's own authority, and it is not for you to know when they will be. But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.'” (Acts 1:6-8)

The first thing that the Apostles did after their meeting with Jesus was to gather together in prayer with Mary, the mother of Jesus, as reported in the first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles.

Only later, prompted by the Spirit, did Peter and the others start to preach and eventually left in order to proclaim the Good News in every corner of the known world.

In order to make clear those parts of the missionary vocation, the Church (in 1927) gave us two Patron Saints that are extraordinary models in each of those aspects. Francis Xavier left to the world's end with the purpose of making Christ known while Therese of the Child Jesus prayed within her monastery so that the love of God be spread throughout the world.

During this novena, we will pray and think about that same zeal that encouraged our Patron Saints to sow the love of God.

This year's theme for World Mission Sunday is LOVE. If one had to define God in one word, one must say that he is LOVE. Therese already understood that it was what was essential. Herewith, I will cite a short extract of her biography: “On June 9, 1895, during the mass of the Trinity, Therese feels inspired to offer herself in sacrifice to the Merciful Love of the Good Lord (and not to the justice of God, as it was back then) because she discovered the depths of mercy that fall upon the small, the poor and the miserable. Here, she reaches the peak of her spiritual life. She will suggest this action to her sisters and her novices. The Church will suggest it to all the baptized people.”

Have a good novena!

“As Jesus walked along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw two brothers who were fishermen, Simon (called Peter) and his brother Andrew, catching fish in the lake with a net. Jesus said to them, 'Come with me, and I will teach you to catch people.' At once they left their nets and went with him. He went on and saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in their boat with their father Zebedee, getting their nets ready. Jesus called them, and at once they left the boat and their father, and went with him.” (Mt 4:18-22)

Day 2 Answering the call should be our priority

“Jesus answered, 'Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?' Then he pointed to his disciples and said, 'Look! Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does what my Father in heaven wants is my brother, my sister, and my mother.'” (Mt 12:48-50)

Like the first disciples, Francis and Therese gave up everything to follow Jesus.

Francis was seduced by Saint Ignatius of Loyola's project and he committed himself to make Christ known as far as life's circumstances would allow him to.

Therese was 15 when she entered the Carmelite order with the purpose of living a life of prayer and sacrifice, by having within her heart the desire to make Jesus known throughout the world. She would pray for the missionaries daily.

And me :Whether I'm committed to pastoral action or dedicate myself to prayer, as a duty or as an act of contemplation, I must answer that call and be a missionary.

Let us pray Our Father/ Hail Mary.Jesus, call us to your mission.Mary, show us how to answer the call of Christ.St. Francis Xavier, pray for us.St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, pray for us.

In order to be a missionary, it is necessary to consider Jesus as the most important person in our lives. It is not necessary to abandon others, but to be able to draw away from them to serve the Lord.

Therese was only 14 when she started the process of becoming a nun and attending the monastery of the Carmelite order. She wasn't able to wait any longer, as she stated. She would be admitted on April 15, 1888, at the age of 15.

Francis answered many calls during his life. Not only did he join Ignatius and many others who founded the Society of Jesus, but all his life, he answered successive calls that lead him to India and Japan.

Day 3 Removing from our lives what prevents the Gospel to grow within us.

“And the seeds sown in the good soil stand for those who hear the message and understand it: they bear fruit, some as much as one hundred, others sixty, and others thirty.” (Mt 13:23)

In order to be a good soil, it is necessary to stay away from the brambles and everything that prevents the Gospel's seeds to grow within us.

In 1549, Francis Xavier wrote from Goa to a fellow Jesuit: “First and foremost, be attentive to yourself and to your relationship with God, because it is from it that your power to be useful to others depends. (…) Worry about and take care of your own conscience, as much as any other, because he who doesn't wish to be good and saintly himself, how can he make others do so?”

The mother of Therese died when she was only four. The young child became sad and felt sorry for her. For almost 10 years, she lived in sadness until, suddenly, she recovered her joy. She said: “Charity entered my heart; I forgot myself in order to please, and I was happy from then on.”

Me: In my life, I search for everything that may keep me from performing an act of love towards God and my neighbor. I try my best to avoid those obstacles. In order to be a good soil, it is necessary to stay away from the brambles and everything that prevents the Gospel's seeds to grow within us.

Let us pray Our Father/ Hail Mary.Jesus, with your help, I would like to clear my heart of any ties that prevent me from fully loving you.Mary, show us how to desire only God's will.St. Francis Xavier, pray for us.St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, pray for us.

“Be merciful just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge others, and God will not judge you; do not condemn others, and God will not condemn you; forgive others, and God will forgive you. Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands-all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.” (Lk 6:36-38)

Every missionary must be generous. He must know how to find joy and happiness in altruism.

Therese said that she wanted to spend her heaven doing good on earth. For her, to love God is to love her brothers and sisters on earth.

On the boat that took him to India, Francis transformed his cabin into an infirmary in which he would care for sick people.

And me : How can I show compassion towards those who suffer around me?

Let us pray Our Father/ Hail Mary.Jesus, with your help, we wish to be good to others.Mary, show us how to answer as you did to the angel, in order to always be at the service of the Lord.St. Francis Xavier, pray for us.St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, pray for us.

Despite the numerous dangers that exist in every country where he preaches, Francis gains the population's sympathy through his simple life. It was said of him: “It is that man who prays God with such faith and intensity! It is that man who shares the life of everyone, who sleeps on the ground, who eats dried fish and drinks curdled milk. It is that man who gives himself and gets exhausted for his master.”

Therese keeps her sense of humor until her last breath. During her last illness, as she suffered from tuberculosis, her sisters said: “The health of Sister Therese is deteriorating. She suffers a lot, but she laughs at herself: she says that she coughs as hard as a locomotive!”

And me: Do I take myself too seriously? Do I seek greatness or am I capable of considering myself an ordinary person?

Let us pray Our Father/ Hail Mary.Jesus, you were considered as a simple Nazarene. Grant us the capacity of accepting to live a simple life as you did.Mary, show us how to accept what is humble and simple as you did when you gave birth in a stable.St. Francis Xavier, pray for us.St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, pray for us.

Dayr 5 It is necessary to be clever and simple

The missionary must accept a simple life and at the same time, he must be able to avoid the cleverness of bad persons.

“Whoever believes that Jesus is the Messiah is a child of God; and whoever loves a father loves his child also. This is how we know that we love God's children: it is by loving God and obeying his commands. For our love for God means that we obey his commands. And his commands are not too hard for us, because every child of God is able to defeat the world. And we win the victory over the world by means of our faith.” (1 Jn 5:1-4)

Therese,Through her simple life, she was an inspiring model for many people. Orthodox and Lutherans, for example, like the way she sees God's love which they consider to be the source of our salvation, unlike our own virtues.

Francis : He encountered many difficulties in Goa (India) because the Christians that came from Europe lived like Lords and had slaves. How could he invite the locals to embrace the Christian faith if the European Christians were exploiting them shamelessly?

And me : When people see me acting, do they see a living page from the Gospel? Or, do they need to ignore me in order to understand the Gospel?

The Gospel is nothing else than love developing itself; it is God's love for us and the love of our brothers and sisters for Him.

Let us pray Our Father/ Hail Mary.Jesus, we want to be living pages of your Gospel.Mary, show us how to experience the Gospel as you did, so that people feel attracted by your Son when they see us.St. Francis Xavier, pray for us.St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, pray for us.

It is relatively easy to commit oneself to follow Jesus on a generous impulse. It is often more difficult to persevere as a disciple despite the difficulties that one may encounter.

Testimony of Cardinal Albino Luciani (who later became John Paul the first) on Therese: “I was 17 when I read your biography. I was thunderstruck by it. You called it: 'Springtime story of a Little White Flower'. It appeared to me as the story of a steel bar, because of the willpower, the courage and the decision that it revealed. The moment you chose the path towards a deep consecration to God, nothing stopped you: neither the illness, nor the external opposition, neither the clouds, nor the inner darkness.”

Francis preaches at the Sultan's Court in Ternate (Indonesia) and he succeeds in obtaining the conversion of a few important people. As for the Sultan, he is hesitant because one must give up many things to become a Christian.

And me: Am I ready to give up everything and follow Christ? Comfort, security and tranquility are often some of the things that one must be able to give up in order to follow Christ. These are things that we must leave behind. We cannot always go back and recover them.

Let us pray Our Father/ Hail Mary.Jesus, we want to follow you to the very end, without looking back.Mary, show us how to be servants of the Lord as you were, from the Annunciation to your Assumption.St. Francis Xavier, pray for us.St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, pray for us.

“And if someone takes you to court to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat as well. And if one of the occupation troops forces you to carry his pack one mile, carry it two miles. When someone asks you for something, give it to him; when someone wants to borrow something, lend it to him.” (Mt 5:40-42)

In order to be a missionary, it is necessary to know how to forgive and be generous. Christianity proclaims love of enemies.

Don Alvaro, a Portuguese captain, caused many problems to Francis. Before leaving the city of Malacca (Indonesia) and heading to China, Francis kneels near the captain's house and, with his arms outstretched in a form of a cross, he prays for him.

In the Carmelite convent of Lisieux, there was an old Sister that particularly annoyed Therese. She had a bad temper. Therese understands that loving others is the path that leads to Jesus. She decides then to love that Sister and to be particularly nice to her. “I would do to that Sister what I would have done to the person that I love the most!” Therese will even tell her that she was glad to see her.

And me: Do I pray for those who harm me and who are unjust to me? Am I waiting for the opportunity to seek vengeance or am I looking for reconciliation?

Let us pray Our Father/ Hail Mary.Jesus, you forgave the persons who killed you. Grant us the courage to forgive those who harm us.Mary, you were standing near the Cross and you accepted to offer your Son. Help us to accept everything that God will ask from us.St. Francis Xavier, pray for us.St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, pray for us.

“I may be able to speak the languages of human beings and even of angels, but if I have no love, my speech is no more than a noisy gong or a clanging bell. I may have the gift of inspired preaching; I may have all knowledge and understand all secrets; I may have all the faith needed to move mountains - but if I have no love, I am nothing. I may give away everything I have, and even give up my body to be burned - but if I have no love, this does me no good.” (1 Cor 13:1-3)

This year's theme for World Mission Day is: To sow is to love: Grow in love! (Mk 4:1-20)

Therese would have wanted to be a priest and at the same time, a prophet, a doctor of the Church, a missionary, a martyr…She wrote in her “Story of a soul”: “I understood that love holds all vocations; that it was everything and that it embraced all times and all places. Thus, I exclaimed: I found my place within the Church, I will be love.”

Francis’ life has no human sense. He suffers, he lives in poverty, he rejects richness and he even defies death several times. Yet, he's far from being crazy. What could possibly explain that way of life other than the love for Christ and our brothers?

And me : How far am I ready to commit myself to for love? Is it the love for God and my neighbor that gives meaning to my life?

Let us pray Our Father/ Hail Mary.Jesus, show us how to love Jesus as you do.Mary, show us how to be servants of the Lord as you were, from the Annunciation to your Assumption.St. Francis Xavier, pray for us.St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, pray for us.

First reading: Isaiah 55:10-11

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

Psalm 95

Second reading: Romans 8:18-23

“I consider that what we suffer at this present time cannot be compared at all with the glory that is going to be revealed to us. All of creation waits with eager longing for God to reveal his children. For creation was condemned to lose its purpose, not of its own will, but because God willed it to be so. Yet there was the hope that creation itself would one day be set free from its slavery to decay and would share the glorious freedom of the children of God. For we know that up to the present time all of creation groans with pain, like the pain of childbirth. But it is not just creation alone which groans; we who have the Spirit as the first of God's gifts also groan within ourselves as we wait for God to make us his children and set our whole being free.”

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia. For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.

The Gospel according to Saint Mark (Mk 4:1-20)

But some seeds fell in good soil, and the plants sprouted, grew, and bore grain: some had thirty grains, others sixty, and others one hundred.”And Jesus concluded, “Listen, then, if you have ears!”When Jesus was alone, some of those who had heard him came to him with the twelve disciples and asked him to explain the parables. “You have been given the secret of the Kingdom of God,” Jesus answered. “But the others, who are on the outside, hear all things by means of parables, so that, 'They may look and look, yet not see; they may listen and listen, yet not understand. For if they did, they would turn to God, and he would forgive them.'”Then Jesus asked them, “Don't you understand this parable?

A Universal Collection

The collection on World Mission Sunday is a “mandatory” universal collection. This means that all the Catholic communities of the world must remit the collection to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in its entirety. All the donations collected within the Churches of the world on that day form the Universal Solidarity Fund for the poorest dioceses of the Church.

A Sign of Communion & Sharing

The collection that takes place during the Eucharistic celebration is an act and a sign of solidarity and sharing. It represents our communion and our participation to the mission of Christ through our solidarity with the poorest Churches of the world.

This collection cannot be replaced by a collection at the doors of the church neither by a remittance of what is collected as a surplus in comparison to the ordinary collection. Also, we cannot put into a common fund all the “mandatory” collections of the year and distribute them fairly between various projects of the parish, because that would mislead the intention of the person who wants to make a donation to the Society for Propagation of the Faith. Moreover, we cannot put aside a part of the collection for other causes more or less connected with the mission (for example: twinning with a poor parish of the South, a parish missionary's projects, missionary congregations or missionary institutes that are present in the parish, etc.), because the Society for the Propagation of the Faith is the only recipient of the collection for World Mission Sunday (Statutes PMS, art. 10). The envelope removed at the beginning of the year for every Sunday of the year (return envelope) must also be deposited along with the collection for World Mission Sunday.

A Sign of Fraternity & Solidarity

The universal collection for World Mission Sunday is unique: its fruits are distributed worldwide according to the needs of the poorest dioceses. Everyone contributes to the cause and this allows the survival of the poorest Dioceses, especially those who do not benefit from twinning or privileged contacts with the West.

The universal collection provides each Bishop the means and freedom of action for the formation of catechists, solidarity, priestly vocations and consecrated life, education, health care, etc. Therefore, it is a tool of justice and fraternity between all the Dioceses. Furthermore, it allows supporting the permanent effort from the universal Church to go and proclaim the Gospel to all nations. This mandate received from Christ is carried by the baptized people and those who are jointly responsible for the Universal Mission along with the Church of Africa, Asia, South America, Central America, Europe and Oceania.

Thank you for your solidarity!
