CLINICAL ACTIVITIES!The Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Department specializes in particular in the treatment of ischaemic

heart disease (myocardial revascularization by bypass), mitral valve diseases with valve replacement or valvuloplasty (conservative procedure), and aortic valve diseases, with or without aneurysm, treated surgically by replacement with prosthetic valves or reconstructive surgery with valvuloplasty.!

In order to minimise the invasive nature of the procedure, coronary surgery is performed off pump, i.e. without the aid of cardiopulmonary bypass, and modern surgical techniques such as endovascular stents and treatments to preserve the cardiac and vascular structures are used.!

Some of the surgical procedures at the Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Department are made by minimally invasive techniques with the "da Vinci" Robot.!

Particular attention is paid to the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins, carried out by laser or conventional therapies, on both an inpatient and day-hospital basis.!

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES!The Cardiology Department is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of all cardiovascular

diseases, in both acute and chronic phases. It carries out non-invasive cardiological tests and surgical procedures (e.g. transthoracic and transoesophageal ultrasound, vascular studies and functional heart tests) as well as invasive tests and procedures (e.g. complex coronary angioplasty, carotid and peripheral vessel stents and arrhythmias).!

The department has an inpatient ward with a coronary unit and a room for instrumental diagnostic and percutaneous surgical procedures, of which it performs more than a thousand each year. Coronary and other heart diseases, such as interatrial septal defect, patent foramen ovale and heart valve malfunction, are treated percutaneously.!

The department also uses non-surgical therapies to treat structural heart diseases (damaged parts of the heart, interatrial septal defects, patent foramen ovale) and to repair heart valves (e.g. aortic stenosis). It also carries out intensive arrhythmology work, with insertion of pacemakers, defibrillators and suppression of cardiac arrhythmias.!

Adjuvant and interventional pharmacological therapies (antithrombotic and statin therapy) in patients undergoing carotid and coronary angioplasty !

New intracoronary stents and use of circulating endothelial progenitor cell capture stents !Application of autologous stem cells in patients with cardiac arrhythmias.!!

What is Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD)?


•  SCD is death related to an abrupt loss of heart function, also known as sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)!

•  “Sudden” can be one hour to 24 hours!

•  Often associated with ventricular fibrillation, it can be a complex condition!

•  Think of it as an electrical accident in the heart!

What is Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD)?

Only effective treatment for SCA is an electrical shock delivered by:!!
