What is Science?

This vast body of changing and increasing knowledge is described by physical, mathematical and

conceptual models

as well as the knowledge generated

through this process

The use of evidence to construct

testable explanations and

predictions of natural phenomena


Defined by the National Academy of Sciences.

Students should know that some questions are outside the realm of science

because they deal with phenomena that are not scientifically testable.

The Scientific MethodA system of steps used to investigate,

answer questions and solve problems


Provide examples of food science questions such as:

• Why do bacteria grow on food at certain temperatures?

• Why do bananas turn brown?

• Why do oil and vinegar not mix?

Randomly select students to provide additional questions.

There are several different steps to the scientific method. We will be using the

five step model.

Step 1 – Question• Identify the problem

• State it clearly as a question


Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation. Good questions come from careful observations. • How? • What? • When? • Where? • Who? • Why?

Step 2 - Hypothesis• Predict a possible answer


A hypothesis is an educated guess based on available evidence.

Step 3 - Experiment• Test the hypothesis

• Develop and follow a procedure


Carry out the experiment following the procedures.

Analyze Data

• Evaluate the information

• Include charts, diagrams or graphs


Review the information and check the data to be able to see if your hypothesis

was answered.

Sometimes, other questions are created and you may need to go back to a

step.

Step 5 - Conclusions• Report your results

• Share with your classmates


The report may be an oral report, a written report or a presentation.

It should be shared the class.
