Stylus• The product will come with a stylus

which is connected by a wire.

• The user would be able to use the stylus to complete quizzes and highlight words they don't understand, which would enable them to learn the meaning of the words.

• They could click on characters names in their stories to show them a character biography, or if the book has also been made into a film, then an actor biography as well.

• Some stories will also end in a quiz, which checks if learning has taken place.

Disabilities

• We have also looked at how we could overcome disabilities when using the Kindle.

• For Dyslexia, we could have the option for different background colours, as it is easier for people who have this condition to read on certain coloured backgrounds.

• Accessibility features already loaded onto the Kindle include audio books, text enlargement and screen rotation.

Parental Control

• The Kindle will ask for your age (on the Amazon website) to make sure that only age appropriate books can be purchased.

• The books for this Kindle will be free/cheap, and can be bought either from the Amazon website or by using the Wi-Fi on the Kindle.

• The original Kindle has a parental control section, so this will also be a feature on the Kindle for Kids.

Features

• The Kindle will have changeable skins which can be designed by the child online (this would cost extra than a standard skin). The skin would double up as a protector against the screen being smashed and it will also be waterproof.

• A case will also be provided so it can be worn around the child's shoulder, so it would be harder to lose.

• The screen will be in colour and be able to hold books with pictures. This kindle will have a back light on it (a button will turn the light on when required).

• This Kindle can be bought with or without 3G, but both versions will have Wi-Fi (this is offered with all Kindles).

Target Audience

• The target audience for the product is children between the ages of 4-10. However, it would be targeted at their parents as well, as the parents would be buying the product for them (as children don't usually have that much disposable income!)

• Children between this age range will want the Kindle to be colourful and fit in with what they like. For example, if they liked a certain cartoon character, there would be a skin that they could buy with this character on it.

Competition

• After looking up 'children's e readers' and 'children's kindles' on Google, we found that Amazon haven't created a Kindle for children, though on their discussion boards, customers have said that this would be a good idea. We also looked on the Amazon website and looked up ‘Kindle', and again, there isn't one for children.

• However, our competition is the GoBook 8, which is an E-reader for children. It allows children to read books, watch movies, listen to music and look at photos, which makes it a borderline children's tablet. The GoBook 8 cost around £54.99.

Proposed Price• We have decided on a starting price of £80-£85.

This is because the Kindle's starting prices are around £69 and go up to £159. This would be a good price because it still does everything a normal Kindle does, but also has a backlight, quizzes, word searches, and booklets.

• There is also the opportunity to buy skins in different colours and designs that will protect the screen. These can be customised by the consumer for an extra charge, so we could make a profit on these.

• As you can buy this with or without 3G, the one with 3G will cost extra. When looking at the Kindle Touch, the version without 3G is £109 but the one with 3G costs £169. However, children are less likely to use the 3G all the time, so it would be a question of how much the parent would be willing to pay for that.
