What really is artichoke?

What really is artichoke?

The cardoons (lat. Cynara cardunculus, Agg. Cardoon or Spanish thistle artichoke) isa deep-rooted perennial plant of Mediterranean origin, well adapted toxirothermikesconditions of N. Europe. Its development begins with the first rains of autumn andcontinue taking advantage of the winter rains and spring until earlysummer when the soil moisture reduced to very low levels. Then the part abovethe plant is dried and can be harvested dry between June and August. With the first of October rains observed again rapid developmentcardoons that within a few days will again fully cover the ground, etc.

Nutritional value for cardoonfodder

• The grass is high quality, chemical composition (Cecilia Cajarville, 1996 - Source:J. Fernandez U.P. Madrid):• Dry Substance 13%• Organic matter 82% of DM• Fibroid substances 13% of DM• Protein 13-15% of DM• Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) 24-26% of DM• Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF) 16-17% of DM• Acid Detergent Lignin (ADL) 2,6 - 3,5% of DM• Fat 2.8% of DM for green fodder and 1.4% of DM for silage• High digestibility coefficient: for dry matter and 78.3% and for organicEssence 86.1%• High energy content: 0,97 UFL (Milk forage units) and 0.98• UFC (Meat forage units)• Moderate ingestion coefficient: 64 g of Dry Matter / kg of metabolic weight PV (0,75)[Possibly due to high moisture content (87,7%)]• The grass has a very good potential for silage, whichattributed to the high content of soluble sugars (27%), pH valuesbelow 4.3, ammonia nitrogen less than 0.27% of DM,high lactate concentrations (9-17% dry basis) and only tracesbutyric acid. The residue contains soluble sugars about 15%.
