What are they?

Screws are simple machines They turn rotating motion to straight motion Usually made of metal Long History

Around 200 BC, a Greek mathematician ( Apollonius of Perga ) worked out the geometry of the spiral-helix and laid the groundwork for the screw!

What do they look like? Have a head and a shaft Have a spiral track on the shaft Vary in sizes Varying shapes on the head of the screws

To build structures To hang pictures To put together a chair To make a book shelf To hold together components of a computer

How do I use them?

To use a screw properly a person needs the aid of a second tool called a screw driver or a special type of screw driver called a power drill

Basic metal screws come in regular metallic colors Silver Gold Metallic Gray

Screws can also be spray painted any color

What sizes do they come in?

Screws come in all different lengths Small Medium Big

Also the screw thread comes in many different sizes

Who should use them?

Anybody from the amateur to the professional carpenter should use the screw.

It is such a simple tool to use.

You can get them from many retail and warehouse stores

How much do they cost?

They start at under $1.00

Can go up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars for specialized screws like the ones used in the space shuttle

Why wouldn’t I just use nails? I don’t know.
