ALS is disease of emotional changes, too.

Independence vs. Safety

Page 5: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

ALS is like a pressure cooker.

Page 6: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

We can help find pieces of the answers.

Page 7: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Normalcy is worth its weight in gold.

Page 8: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Couples go through ALS together, but…

Page 9: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

These are truly extraordinary circumstances.

Page 10: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Think outside the box.

Page 11: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

It’s not easy to accept help.

Page 12: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

The family must gather its resources.

Page 13: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

You can work with any size support system.

ALS brings so many intense emotions: loss, frustration, helplessness.

Page 16: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Loss: physical function, control, identity

Helplessness

Frustration

Frustration

Page 20: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

We all want our roar to be heard.

Page 21: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

We take out our frustrations on those closest to us.

Page 22: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Resentment is the line in the sand.

Page 23: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Families…what IS “normal?”

Page 24: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

What was the family like before the ALS?

Page 25: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

We have to work with closed family systems.

Page 26: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Secrets and lies

Page 27: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

We can only do what they allow us to do.

Page 28: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Everything is not always as it appears.

Page 29: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

We all have ideas of what a couple looks like.

Page 30: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

We have images in our mind of “family.”

Page 31: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Who’s to say?...

Page 32: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

…if it works for them!

Page 33: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Quality of Life (QOL)

Page 34: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

“I’m not going to let this take any more of me than it has to!”

Page 35: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Energy conservation is for the spouse, too.

Page 36: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

“Conserve my energy for what?!”

Page 37: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Our most challenging families

Page 38: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Objective 1: Understand the 3 most common ALS issues in a family: loss, helplessness, frustration.

Page 39: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Objective 2: Be able to provide 2 tools to help the family cope.

Page 40: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Encourage patient and family to ask for help: counselors and support groups, as well as their support network.

Page 41: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Teach that the anger is at the disease.

Page 42: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Objective 3: Be able to teach three ways to maximize support and resources:

Page 43: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Use a page on website to organize resources

Page 44: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Think outside the box: Peapod (grocery delivery service); take FMLA one day per week.

Page 45: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Validate how difficult it is to ask for help, but explain the necessity.

Page 46: Presentation 227 laurie fieldman als families

Something for us to remember:
