Dear parents, Firstly, we would like to welcome our new parents who recently became a part of our KMBR family. We hope that you will enjoy reading our first issue of the newsletter for 2017. In this issue, you will be furnished with more exciting news with regards to all the activities and happenings at the centre. We ushered the Year of the Rooster with a celebration together with the parents. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents who took the time off from their busy schedule to join us in the celebration. In Term 2, our Todd- N1s will be covering a broad theme on ‘Food’, whereas our N2s-K2s curriculum will be covering a broad theme on ‘My Family & Neighbourhood’. As we believe that children learn through active exploration and interaction, the teachers will be planning several outings and activities for the children in this upcoming Term. We would like to seek parents consent in allowing your child to participate in the activities. We look forward to working with you in partnership for Term 2. If you have any enquiries or feedback, do email me at [email protected]. Principal Mdm Ninah Khader

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.”
― Margaret Mead
By the end of term 1, the toddlers had already transitioned and adapted into their new class
environment. The teachers carried out activities to develop their skills and interests.
One such activity was the Discovery and Exploration. Children were engaged with
water play! They took turns to dip clothes into the basin and exchanged laughter and
giggles.
In their classrooms, teachers had creatively
setup different corners into ‘Interest Areas’ in which the children visited in
the afternoons. The children’s favourite was the dramatic area, where they
pretended to play cookery. They also had fun at the art area and block play!
We too had activities such as Outdoor Play. The toddlers especially, looked forward to go to the playground as they get to move around and have
fun! They learnt to get along with the others and gradually improved on their
social skills.

“I am feeling..” In February, the children learnt about the sub-theme “emotions”. As a follow-up activity, they did a craft where they get to choose to create either a happy or a sad face. The craft also helped to refine their fine motor skills; use of the pincer’s grasp. The children then used their crafts for a sharing session in class. They expressed their thoughts & personal experiences which made them feel sad or happy. Besides building on their language skills, this activity also aimed to develop the children’s social-emotional development by building their self-esteem when speaking to an audience.
“I spy with my..” ,Yet another exciting activity carried out outdoors. In line with the sub-theme in March “My 5 Senses”, the ‘Thrilling Threes’ had a Nature Walk led by the teacher. They were to look out for flowers. Without much hesitation, children went to the mini garden just next to the school and searched for flowers. They used their sense of touch, sight and smell for the activity. Each child even managed to bring 1 flower back to school and placed it in our sensorial basket.
Thrilling Threes!

February’s sub theme focused on ‘My Body’. The children arranged the pictures of the parts of the body and some were able to draw them. They had fun placing the pictures to the corresponding parts of their bodies..
In March, the topic focus was on “My Emotions”. The children were introduced to the different types of facial expressions and drew them according to how they were feeling.
Some children showed sad, happy and angry faces.

Children had fun playing the “Balloon-minton” with their peers. Such outdoor activities promote children’s wholesome
physical development as well as self-confidence as they interacted with their friends
during the games.
As the K1 children were beginning to understand the game rules, they were more engaged and confident in trying new skills. Through various games, they built stronger
relationships with their peers too.
During the Learning Centre time, children would use this opportunity to apply the new skills that they learnt from prior lessons. For example, the
activity ‘Let’s Take Measures’ , children used nonstandard units to measure length.
As children explored using their 5 senses, they made unusual
discoveries. See the children faces when they found a worm
wriggling in between the cracks of the gravels on the ground!

5 senses
In this activity, the children were blindfolded and they were required to use their senses and their sense of intuition to pour water up to the brim of the glasses without spilling! It was an exciting experience for the children. ‘Watch out, be careful!’
Fun-ART!
In Term 1, children were exposed to various mediums or tools other than the brushes. They used pompom balls and eggshells to paint pictures. They were amused at the texture of the eggshells and were curious as to why the eggshells were of various colours.
Kick-them-all…
At first, children were seen fumbling with the ball as they tried to kick and run with it. Many times, they were also seen to use their hands to change the course of the ball. However, the children persevered and practised until they were able to kick a ball according to the different courses, achieving the game’s objectives. Well done K2s!

Prior to KMBR’s Chinese New Year Celebration, the centre had a cultural week from the 18th January to 25th January to create awareness of the upcoming celebration and to introduce children to the Chinese culture and customs. Children joined the fun of the music and movements such as the fan dance, ribbon dance and lion dance and singing to Chinese songs such as Gongxi Gongxi and Xin Nian Hao. Children understood better about items associated with Chinese culture such as fan, dragon, lantern and rooster. Children did various crafts as they learnt about the different objects. They also learnt the Chinese culture and customs through storytelling which explained about how Chinese New Year is celebrated, what red symbolises and knowing more about Chinese goodies such as pineapple tarts.
