Teaching Steps 1. Welcome (3 minutes)

• Welcome each participant to Game On! Invite them to sit together according to the age group they will teach.

o Give each conferee one VBS 2018 Eye Black Decal and a handout (Item 1) as she enters. (Try to give out each color equally.) Lead conferees to place the decal on their handouts to reference later.

o Invite conferees to make a name tag. • Say: “It’s time to gear up for the big game! Whether you’re the type to root from the

stands, march in the band, cheer on the field, or hustle to the line, it’s Game On!” • Comment: “During VBS, preschoolers will learn what God wants people to do. But, just

like athletes, we should warm up before we begin.”

2. Pregame Warm-Up (10 minutes) • Lead conferees to play a charades-style warm-up game.

o Invite two volunteers to play. Give one the football Game Cube Insert and the other the soccer ball Insert (from Babies–2s Pack Item 15c).

o Point out the 6 sections on the tablecloth on the wall. Explain that the volunteers will get to advance their ball one segment for each correct movement guessed (moving from left to right). The goal is to get both balls down the field.

o Lead the first volunteer to draw a Movement Card (3s–Pre-K Pack Item 10) out of the locker and act it out (silently) for the group. Blow the whistle as soon as the correct answer is given and allow the volunteer to advance her ball one space.

o Give the second volunteer a turn. Continue playing until every Movement Card has been used and both balls have moved through each section of the field.

• Say: “Before we gear up and teach preschoolers, let’s pray and ask God to prepare our own hearts.”

• Lead the conferees in prayer. Ask the Lord to help participants as they teach and minister to preschoolers and their families.

3. G is for Get Ready (10 minutes)

• Explain that today conferees will learn about 6 things they can do to prepare for preschool VBS using the acronym G-A-M-E-O-N. Invite them to print each letter in the pennants along the side of their handouts. Say: “Use the space beside each pennant to write your notes.”

o Comment: “G is for Get Ready.” Clip the “G” (from Kindergarten Pack Item 11) near the top of the piece of yarn hanging vertically near the focal wall.

o Ask conferees with YELLOW eye black decals on their handouts to stand. (Ideally, conferees will be scattered throughout the group.) Guide them to say: “G stands for Get Ready.” Invite two conferees to join you at the front and lead the others to sit down.

• Share: “Our first job as coaches is to get our hearts ready to teach.” • Open the locker, hold up the Bible, and say: “The Bible is our ultimate playbook for life.

During VBS, preschoolers will learn that God gave us the Bible. Let’s look in the Bible to learn the preschool Bible verse for VBS.”

o Remove the Verse Cards (3s–Pre-K Leader Pack Item 7) from the Bible and explain that the verse is written on these cards, but they will need to be put in order.

o Ask the two YELLOW volunteers to clip the verse words in order on the string stretched between two chairs. Explain that one volunteer may touch only the cards, and the second volunteer may touch only the clothespins. They must work together to put the verse together.

o Thank the volunteers and invite the group to read the verse together: God has given us everything we need. 2 Peter 1:3

• Ask: “What signs or signals do referees or umpires use during a game?” Lead conferees to show you the signal for “touchdown” in football (arms raised straight up overhead) and the symbol for “out” in baseball (right thumb and pumped back over shoulder).

o Invite conferees to stand. Teach the following motions to the verse: ∼ God: point with fingers up ∼ us: point to chest with thumbs ∼ everything: move left arm down by side with palm facing out ∼ need: move right arm down by side with palm facing out

VBS 2018 Preschool Base Conference Plan

4

o Lead conferees to say the verse and perform the signals or signs. • Explain that preschoolers will use this one verse for the entire week of VBS. • Mention that preschoolers will also get to sing the verse in the song, “Everything We

Need” (Music for Preschoolers CD, track 1). o Teach the motions to the song as directed on p. 49 in the 3s–Pre-K and

Kindergarten Leader Guides. o Lead conferees to sing and do the motions.

• Comment: “God has given us everything we need to help preschoolers learn about Him during VBS. But more importantly, God has given preschoolers everything they need to learn about Him. We can help preschoolers and their families discover wonderful truths during Game On! VBS.”

4. A is for Athletes (15 minutes)

• Clip the next letter (A) on the focal wall string and say: “A stands for Athletes.” o Remove the “Athlete Cards” (Item 2) from the locker. o Ask conferees with the RED/ORANGE eye black decals to stand and say: “A

stands for Athletes.” Invite two conferees to play the game and distribute the “Athlete Cards” to six other conferees. Lead the other RED/ORANGE conferees to sit back down.

• Comment: “Coaches must know their athletes so they can help them be the best they can be. At VBS, coaches (teachers) must know the athletes (children) they teach. Knowing your athletes helps you better know how to teach and minister to them.”

• Give the two RED/ORANGE players each a straw and ask them to stand on the opposite side of the table from the cups. Point out that one cup is labeled Yes and the other is labeled No.

o Read each question, alternating questions between the two players. Allow the player to answer by blowing the ball into the answer cup of their choice. Then ask the conferee holding the matching “Athlete Card” to read the official correct answer from the card.

∼ Can a 2-year-old cut out a heart from a paper plate? (No. Your athletes have unique skill sets! Kids are still developing fine and gross motor skills. Be prepared for a wide range of skills among the children you teach.)

∼ Does a 3-year-old enjoy repetition? (Yes. Practice makes perfect! Preschoolers love repetition. It’s good to repeat activities throughout the week and bring back favorite games and songs.)

∼ Will a 4-year-old sit still for 10 minutes? (No. Preschoolers have short attention spans—roughly one minute for every year of age. Stay flexible and be ready to shorten, repeat, or even skip elements as needed.)

∼ Can a 5-year-old internalize and apply Bible truths? (Yes. Preschoolers can listen to Bible stories, play Bible verse games, ask questions, use the Bible, and sing about God and Jesus. )

∼ Do preschoolers enjoy imitating adults? (Yes. You’re the coach! Eyes and ears are always on you. Preschoolers are always watching and listening. Kids will learn more from your actions than your words. You are always teaching something.)

∼ Are kindergartners experiential learners? (Yes. Get your team “in the game!” Preschoolers are hands-on, experiential learners and they LEARN as they DO.)

o Display the Daily Points (3s–Pre-K Leader Pack Items 8a-e) and explain that there is one main point, or central Bible truth, for each day.

o Distribute the items randomly to conferees around the room. • Give each of the five GREEN volunteers a megaphone labeled 1 to 5. Say: “M is also for

megaphone. Let’s use the megaphones to learn the material we will teach.” o Lead each volunteer to read the clues on her megaphone and say them through

the megaphone. o Explain that the name is the main character of the Bible story, the second word is

a clue about the Bible story, and the third word is part of the daily point. • Help conferees identify the trading card, craft stick, and daily point that match the clues

on that day’s megaphone. o Megaphone clues:

∼ Day 1: Jesus, sheep, important ∼ Day 2: Lazarus, gauze, anything ∼ Day 3: Thomas, eyes, true ∼ Day 4: John, heart, love ∼ Day 5: Paul, music, praise

Item 2. Athlete Cards

Q: Can a 2-year-old cut out a heart from a paper plate?

A: No. Your athletes have unique skill sets! Kids are still developing fine and gross motor skills. Be prepared for a wide range of skills among the children you teach.

Q: Does a 3-year-old enjoy repetition?

A: Yes. Practice makes perfect! Preschoolers love repetition. It’s good to repeat activities throughout the week and bring back favorite games and songs.

Q: Will a 4-year-old sit still for 10 minutes?

A: No. Preschoolers have short attention spans—roughly one minute for every year of age. Stay flexible and be ready to shorten, repeat, or even skip elements as needed.

Q: Can a 5-year-old internalize and apply Bible truths?

A: Yes. Preschoolers can listen to Bible stories, play Bible verse games, ask questions, use the Bible, and sing about God and Jesus.

Item 2. Athlete Cards

Q: Do preschoolers enjoy imitating adults?

A: Yes. You’re the coach! Eyes and ears are always on you. Preschoolers are always watching and listening. Kids will learn more from you.

Q: Are kindergarteners experiential learners?

A: Yes. Get your team “in the game!” Preschoolers are hands-on, experiential learners and they “learn” as they “do.”
