Presbyterian News and Views From the Minister’s Study Dear Members and Friends of First Church: I continue to praise God because of the health, vitality and spiritual resolve of First Church. We are a place of vibrant spiritual growth and over the next several months we will begin to see our num- bers grow. Last year we had a remarkably successful stewardship campaign. One of the things that this tells the watching world is that the members and friends of First Church are committed to the vision of making disciples of Jesus Christ. It also means that First Church has the wherewithal to sustain quality ministry and meaningful outreach. Our resolve is seen and admired by our brothers and sisters in Christ. Since August I have been on the radio Sunday mornings as a part of God Won MinistriesThe Apostles Call. One of the results has been that people in our area have wanted to learn more about Presbyterians and First Presbyterian Church. What they have discovered has ex- cited and encouraged them. On numerous occasions I have been told that First Church is not a typ- icalPresbyterian Church. I have always taken it as a compliment. What I think they usually mean is that First Church is obvious and steadfast in its commitment to be a disciple-making Church. We are serious about Jesus, His Word and our obedience. Often Presbyterians wonder what they bring to the body of Christ. We are not as flash as some Christians, we dont move as easily (and you know that has nothing to do with age). Presbyterians can be slow, ponderous even dour. What they see, however, is that we are valiant for truth and steadfast in our commitments. All of this can be seen by other Christians in the community and I am happy to know that we have a reputation among our neighbors as a Bible-believing, Bible- preaching, Jesus-loving church. There can be, I think, no higher praise. So stick with it. Your ef- forts inside the church are noticed even outside the church. This March we will be celebrating Easter. Prepare spiritually for Easter. Pick and read a gospel all the way through. Pick and read a New Testament epistle all the way through. Even Jude or Phile- mon will do. The point is to know that Jesus Christ lives and speaks to you. Jesus Christ rose from that grave. He is seated at the right hand of the Father. Even now, by the power of His Spirit, we are joined to Him. Jesus is alive. Because He is alive, we have new life in Him. Jesus is risen, not just in our hearts, but in reality. He is risen and He reigns. Having called us to new life in Him, He reigns in such a way that all things will work together for our salvation. Because Christ has been raised we can live lives of gratitude and faithfulness. I know I am preaching to the converted, but as March roars in like a lion know through all the coming storms that our comfort is in the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. So, join us Wednesdays at 6:30 for Bible Study, and join us for our chapel services at 7:00 during Holy Week. May the Lord bless you and keep you, make His face to shine upon you and give you peace. From the Minister’s Study

Dear Members and Friends of First Church: I continue to praise God because of the health, vitality and spiritual resolve of First Church. We are a place of vibrant spiritual growth and over the next several months we will begin to see our num-bers grow. Last year we had a remarkably successful stewardship campaign. One of the things that this tells the watching world is that the members and friends of First Church are committed to the vision of making disciples of Jesus Christ. Hunger Offering

The monthly Hunger Offering (.04 cents a meal) will be received immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service on March 13, 2016. These funds are administered to support local and regional hunger needs. Your contributions are greatly appre-ciated. Jim Salmon took almost 50 pounds of food to C-CAP in February. They really appreciate what FPC contributes to their food bank. Thanks to all of you for helping in this mission.

PW Mission Project \Berkeley County Back Pack Program Helping to end child hunger in our county… One backpack at a time! Ways You Can Help… There are many ways we can help but PW has decided to hold a food drive as our efforts to help make this project a success. Suggested needed items:

Water bottles

NEW BOOKS ADDED TO THE LIBRARY The first two books were purchased at the "bookstore" at the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals' Women's Conference in Lancaster, PA in October. “God, Adam and You, Biblical Creation Defended and Applied” is a collection of writings by six different authors on various aspects of the creation story and how what we believe about it affects our beliefs about the rest of the Bible and how we live it out. “Compassion - Seeing with Jesus Eyes” by Joshua Mack "What We Believe, Understanding and Confessing the Apostles Creed", by R.C. Sproul You'll find them on the table in the Library with a large sign, NEW BOOKS. Check them out by entering your name and date in the notebook on the shelf opposite the ta-

ble. Watch for another book coming called “Extravagant Grace, God's Glory Displayed in Our Weakness", writ-ten by Barbara R. Duguid, the main speaker at the October conference. (I have three more chapters yet to read!) Joan Van Brunt

One Great Hour of Sharing

Once again we are entering the Lenten season and churches throughout the country will be participating in the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering along with other denominations. This offering has his-torically been the largest offering year after year among Presbyterians. Sixty percent of the PCUSA churches participated in 2014 and $6,645,678 was collected.

There are three efforts on which OGHS focuses. First and foremost, there is the focus on hunger which receives 36% of all monies collected. OGHS does not just hand out food but tries to help people be able to get food for themselves. You may have heard the old adage; “Give a man a fish and he’ll eat it today, but teach a man to fish and he will eat every day.” We do both, we give out food and we teach them to fish or raise food.

The second effort is the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) receiving 32% to continue their ef-forts in disasters. These funds help restore things to normal after a disaster, be it natural (think earthquake, flood etc.) or manmade (think war, refugees etc.). Would you believe that PDA still has a Presbyterian presence in Louisiana coordinating volunteer efforts to restore that area? Well, believe because it is true. This has been confirmed with the GA offices in Louisville by our M&E Committee.

The third and final focus is Self-Development of People which receives 32%. This is an effort to partner with people of all stripes to help them. SDOP helps both financially and by connecting them with other people and organizations to alleviate poverty. There is no racial, ethnic or any other requirement other than to be disadvantaged economically. Poor has no boundaries.

We will be receiving this offering on Palm Sunday and also on Easter Sunday again this year. Why don’t we count our blessings, name them one by one and then pray about what our part may be in

this vital mission. You will be blessed once again.

In Sympathy

We remember Chet Martin, a beloved member of First Church

who went to be with His Lord on February 20th. Please remember his family and friends in your

prayers. We will surely miss him. "....Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and staff, they comfort me." (The 23rd Psalm)

Tuesday Morning Prayer Group

NEW MEMBERS STILL NEEDED!!!

Prayer is the backbone of the church and this mission is a tradition here. Our participation in the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group has been declining for a while now and we are in need of new members. Participation in this provides a great opportunity to fellowship, to support one another and to connect with our Heavenly Father through prayer. Many favorable comments have been made about our mission and the cards we send. It is not uncom-mon for patients to say that they have felt the power of our prayers. At numerous times and places, prayers have included church growth. This is an excellent opportunity to help First Church and your community to serve our Heavenly Father through prayer! We meet on Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. in the library. We enter through the parking lot door. Pastries and coffee are enjoyed each week. Questions? Contact Lew Rinker, 304-267-4762.

National Christian Choir In Concert

Sunday, March 13, 2016 4:00 p.m.

This group of singers, part of the larger National Christian Choir (NCC), presents an afternoon of music that touches the heart — from contemporary praise music to traditional an-thems, from powerful rejoicing to moving songs of comfort. 2nd Edition exists to take the NCC exper ience into church-es and venues that usually cannot accommodate the full 170-voice Choir. Tickets: Adults-$5.00; Students K-12-$3.00. Children under 4 years do not need tickets but we do need to know they are coming. Limited Capacity: please order early and don’t count on tickets being available for sale at the door. Patrons in wheelchairs or otherwise disabled should order tickets early. Maddie the Mission Mouse

“In like a lion out like a lamb.” After a cold, snowy February is it possible that March will give us a reprieve and be a harbinger of better things to come? Can we pray that March will herald the coming Spring, April showers, and warmer weather with May flowers? I thought by coming to West Virginia from Minneapolis I could escape some of the snow, wind, and cold that that part of our country is well known for. It makes sense that many Scandinavian immi-grants settled in that part of the United States. They felt at home there. I could have done without the 40 inches of snow that filled the First Church parking lot and piled up against the doors. We owe Jim Horner a great thanks for plowing us out and quickly at that! You are so blessed with members that

are willing to pitch in and make life in this church the blessed House of God that it is. You do make the song, “We are Family” so true in this place. These are exciting times! You have warmly welcomed new folks to quickly feel at home here, and after hearing the Word of God truly preached and lived out here, they have decided to make this place their church home. We are all blessed that they arrived here willing to serve and not just to be served! God is good and we experience many blessings as we worship him in this place. Have you been attending the Wednesday Bible studies that Dr. Burton is leading about “Jesus on Eve-ry Page” in the Old Testament? If not, you are missing an exciting, interesting learning experience. Dr. Burton is a gifted, learned teacher. His knowledge of the Bible and Bible times allows him to bring the life of Jesus and the people of that time to life. He is very well read and knows what knowledgeable people of history and today have to say about God’s promise to all of us and the great gift we have in Christ. With the sermons planned leading up to an early Easter Sunday in March we all should have a renewed understanding of the promises made to God’s people and the real sacrifice Christ made to en-able us to truly understand the great gift we have in God’s love and grace. Don’t miss the series of services at 7:00 PM each evening during Holy Week. On Maundy Thursday, March 24th a meal at 6:00 PM will be provided by the Kirk Session followed by worship and the Lord’ Supper. There is a special Good Friday service at 3:00 PM. Then on Easter Sunday morning the cele-bration of Christ’s resurrection and our assurance of new life will be the focus of the 11:00 AM wor-ship service. First Church has lost very special members in recent months, most recently Chet Martin. Chet will be sorely missed. He loved this church and true to the special person Chet was, he very quietly was often serving in the background. We have been so blessed to have experienced the time he was with us. Chet, go with God as he welcomes you home. You folks surely keep a mouse busy trying to keep up with all that is going on here. Thank you for providing me a warm welcoming place to be and your CRUMBS are most welcome. My thanks to the great cooks here, I am well fed.

‘til next month, Maddie

Happy Easter

SESSION NOTES

The Kirk Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsburg, WV met in stated session in the Church Chapel on February 8, 2015. There were eight Ruling Elders present. The Moderator then led a period of Meditation and Praise that included Scripture, and Prayers. The minutes of the Stated Kirk Session meeting of January 11, 2016 were accepted without exception and will be entered into the Session Minutes Book with committee reports attached as amendments. The committee asked that the sound system be checked to ensure all microphones fed to all speakers in the sanctuary, choir loft, and nursery. Elder Rinker listed all committee members and their responsibilities including the Memorial Com-mittee. Complete report is attached. Maintenance: No Report Submitted. A contract proposal was received from Bonded Applicators of MD INC. This will need to be reviewed by the incoming Maintenance Committee members. Once evaluated, their recommendations will be considered. God’s in the Park will again be a significant event to which First Church can be a part. The session then turned to a season of Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession followed by the adjournment with a Benediction of-fered by the Moderator. The date of the next stated meeting is scheduled for March 14, 2015 at 5:00 PM. Once approved, the Session Minutes for the February 8, 2016 Stated Meeting with Copies of reports from the various commit-tee and Boards will be included in the Session Record Book and posted on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.

OPENING THE CHURCH

Isn’t it great to come to church on Sunday mornings and find the doors open for you? That doesn’t happen by chance. Each month your church officers commit to opening the church, ensuring the heating or air conditioning is on and working, lights are on, and all outside doors are open. For March Tom Horn has volunteered to provide this service. When you see the folks who are doing this for us, take a minute to thank them for making our worship experiences more physically comfortable.

HE IS RISEN by Cecile Frances Alexander

He is risen, He is risen’ Tell it out with joyful voice: He has burst His three-days’ prison; Let the whole wide earth rejoice. Death is conquered, man is free, Christ has won the victory. Come ye sad and fearful-hearted, With glad smile and radiant brow. Lent’s long shadows have departed. All His woes are over now And the passion that He bore: Sin and pain can vex no more. Come with high and holy hymning; Chant our Lord’s triumphant day. Not one darksome cloud is dimming Yonder glorious morning ray, Breaking o’er the purple East, Symbol of our Easter Feast.
