“Whatever You Do”

This month ends our intensive and adventurous journey in Colossians 3:12-17 that we have taken since last

September. In verse 17, Paul said: “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the

Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” This message comes through clearly in the hymn

“Living for Jesus.”

Living for Jesus a life that is true, Striving to please Him in all that I do;

Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free, This is the pathway for me.

Living for Jesus, as Paul challenges us to do, is a matter of courageously opting to use the greatest human

power that God has endowed us, our power to choose. Choose to live for Jesus. In striving to do this, I want

to share some thoughts of Christians past.

Do not yield to every impulse and suggestion but consider things carefully and

patiently in the light of God’s will. For very often, sadly to say, we are so weak

that we believe and speak evil of others rather than good. ---Thomas A’ Kempis

A Christian should always remember that the value of his good works is not based on their number

and excellence, but on the love of God which prompts him to do these things.

---St. John of the Cross (1542-1591)

A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed. ---Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906)

The bottom line is “Love in Action” and that love, the love of Christ dwelling in us and through us. Let the

chorus of Living for Jesus be a daily prayer for us this month.

O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee;

For Thou, in Thy atonement, Didst give Thyself for me.

I own no other Master, My heart shall be Thy throne.

My life I give, hence-forth to live, O Christ for Thee alone.

God bless! Fred

LIBRARY LINES AUGUST 2014

The featured book this month is REVOLUTION IN WORLD MISSIONS - One Man’s Journey to Change a Generation by Dr. K. P. Yohannan. “Lord, I’ll give myself to speak for you.” “Young Yohannan had no idea what those words of surrender would mean for his life and for millions of others in his generation. Once an insecure 16-year-old, he became a missionary statesman who has impacted the world of missions and whose unbending message has touched hungry hearts on every continent. Step into his story and experience the world through his eyes. You’ll walk right into the book of Acts. And through his telling, you’ll hear the very heart of God beating for His creation. K. P. Yohannan’s passion is contagious and spurs you on to be all for Jesus. He chose to take the road less traveled many years ago, and today Gospel for Asia, the mission he founded, is one of the most respected organizations in our time with thousands of national workers and vibrant congregations throughout the heart of the 10/40 Window. Get ready--your life is about to change!” A non-fiction book has been donated: WHEN LIFE COMES UNDONE by T. J. & Mary Addington. Thank you to all those who donate to the library. We can always use the donations. Happy Reading,

Faye Brackett, Librarian

MISSION MINUTE

AUGUST-2014

This mission report is from Hunter Farrell, Director, Presbyterian World Mission

As I visit with Presbyterians around the country, I am amazed at how enthusiastically our church has embraced Presbyterian World Mission’s three critical global initiatives: addressing the root causes of poverty, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ, and working for reconciliation. Presbyterians show their support through their prayers and financial support and by participating in one or more of the initiatives through direct mission involvement. These initiatives took shape after extensive prayer and conversations with our global partners and mission workers and with mission leaders across the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). They are deeply

rooted in Scripture and in our Reformed tradition.

As we have lived into these initiatives, we have continued to dialogue with mission workers, global partners and mission leaders from the U.S. We have asked global partners to consider the specific types of mission engagement they would like to see around each of these initiatives. We have asked mission leaders in the United States and mission personnel how their support of the three initiatives could be made more faithful and effective. Out of these conversations, these three campaigns have been developed: - Providing quality education for one million children - Training leaders for community transformation

- Ending violence against women and children

Our mission workers play a central role in the execution of these campaigns. They work alongside global partners in almost 50 countries to present a holistic witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. They serve in ministries that are transforming individuals and communities. Our mission workers are called and committed individuals who need your

prayers and financial support.

“TILL WE SPEAK AGAIN”

Question: What is tough love, that I heard so much about, and how does it work?

Millie: Oh my - What a question!

Here goes - Tough love means loving someone enough to let them make poor choices in life

and to live with the consequences of those choices no matter how painful they may be or

how much we’d like to fix it.

This can stem from a number of reasons. The most common are alcohol and drug

addiction. They are followed by theft, laziness, etc… Most times the person involved,

according to him, is blameless. Everyone is out to get him. If you could just help him, he

could get right back on his feet. This is the same story heard over and over. With your help,

you are enabling that person to continue their bad behavior and not have to stand

accountable for it.

Of course this does not mean don’t help someone who needs help on occasion. This is a

different matter altogether. Usually in this bad type of situation, the person involved tries

to shift the blame onto you or someone else. If you don’t help, they will never see, or speak

to you again. When you do help, it only lasts for a short while. They don’t learn from their

mistakes and are back asking, no demanding more help.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is nothing. It’s hard to watch the people you care about

struggle and fail. The only thing you can do is pray for them and offer to show them the way

to Jesus for their own salvation. Sometimes only prison works this magic about.

God has been known to watch his chosen people turn to idolatry, be sold into slavery, and

the entire nation be conquered by their foe. He could have helped, but they learned more

by his watching and waiting.

I do hope this has answered your question.

Our Ice Cream Social was another great success! This year’s profit so far is $520.00. This

is designated for local mission projects.

I want to thank Irene Bere, Co-chair, as well as the workers; Mary, Pam, Sandy, Gloria,

Meg, Linda, Vicky, Bill Kerr, Bob Wiles, Dr. Fred, Steve Broskovak, Faye, Amy and Norma

and to Christi for creating our flyer. Without everyone’s help, we would not be able to do

our socials.

As we all know, our community comes to these socials with smiles. We are grateful for

these neighbors and their wonderful support.

Sun Fest Market in Gassville donated four gallons of ice cream again this year. Mary, Irene

and Amy donated the other four gallons needed.

The cakes, toppings and lemonade were all donated by P.W. members.

Thanks be to God for a beautiful day and to all, our heartfelt thanks for your generous

support!
