ever I look. The point is, if I

    want a snowscape in January

or February that is not ru-

    ined by high grass and

    weeds jutting up every-

    where, I need to prepare

    months in advance.

    It occurred to me that

the very same is true in our

    spiritual journey. If we de-

    sire a deep spiritual walk

with our Lord that will sus-

tain us in the winter of life,

    we had better be working

toward that goal in the sea-

too late for me to cut the

    weeds after the snow starts

falling. It is too late to devel-

op a spiritual walk after win-

    ter hits. The problem with

most of us, however, is that

    we always think we have

    more time to prepare than

    we actually do.

    Sometimes winter de-

    scends upon us before we

    are fully prepared. The

    Farmer’s Almanac, for exam-

    ple, is predicting an early

    winter that is wetter and

    colder than average. Dad

    always paid close attention

    to the Farmer’s Almanac, if

    it predicted an early winter,

he made sure his wheat and

    barley were in the ground

    10:30AM WALK

  • small group experience,

    more than a knowledge of

    Christ that just scratched

    the surface, more than a

faith in name only. I wanted

    a spiritual walk that in-

formed the rest of life, not

a faith that was merely an

extension of that life. I con-

    tinue that journey to this

    very day, by intentionally

    applying my faith even when

    it does not personally bene-

    fit me.

    My growing concern for

    many is that spirituality has

been bent in such a way as

    to only support what they

    already do. Spirituality is

    not self-serving; it is the

    engine behind self-

    awareness. Self-awareness is

    the God sustained reminder

that we are far more hu-

    man, far more culturally

    directed, and far more falli-

ble than we want to believe.

    This deep spiritual walk

    Winter has come early for

me this year. In August, I

    was diagnosed with an ag-

    gressive form of malignant

    prostate cancer. Tomorrow

    morning, I will undergo a

    radical prostatectomy, which

    is a life changing surgery.

    That diagnosis was my

    “Farmer’s Almanac.” I started

    my yearly October snows-

    cape preparation in the heat

of the “Dog Days,” so that

the final yard work in Sep-

tember would not be so in-

    tense. Even with this warning,

    however, there are some

things I just didn’t get to

do…I have run out of time.

The same is not true of

    my spiritual formation. I have

    been serious about deepening

    my spiritual walk with the

Lord since I made the deci-

sion to enter seminary in the

spring of life. I wanted more

    than church, more than a

    does not happen without an

    intentional pursuit. Nor

    does it happen quickly. It’s

too late after winter sets in.

I am reminded of a per-

    son, some years ago now,

who often said to me that

    he had not been serious

    enough about his faith, but

    that was going to change

    once he retired. Then he

would have time to attend a

    Bible Study and get more

    serious about his faith. Just

    weeks after he retired he

    had fairly minor surgery,

    developed a blood clot and

    died. Winter came suddenly

and hard and he was not

    ready. There were many

    things that he wanted to

    accomplish…but he ran out

    of time.

    It is October, the leaves

    will soon explode with col-

or, the days will continue to

    grow shorter and colder,

    and fall decorations will

    Medical Leave

Beginning September 17, 2019 I will be on Medical Leave

for surgery and recuperation. My medical leave (at least

initially) will continue for 8 weeks. During this period, Pas-

tor Shawn Lochinger will handle all emergency pastoral

duties. He will also be the primary Sunday speaker for the

    duration of Pastor Smith’s leave.

Joe Royer, our pastor of visitation, will continue to be our

primary emergency and non-emergency person for pasto-

ral care. It should be noted that Joe has performed several

funerals and is capable of doing so should the need arise in

    the near future.

All other business normally handled or conducted by me

is to be directed to the Church Office. Please be advised

that any issue the Staff deems absolutely necessary will be

forwarded to me via our Business Administrator, Dawn

Schaffer and/or our Worship Leader, Joyce Lochinger.

I have full confidence in the Staff of Gravel Hill. Our Staff

has been in place for a long period and they clearly under-

stand the normal operation of the Church. I fully expect

the church will operate so well that the average member of

Gravel Hill will not even realize my absence!

Finally, as I have already addressed from the pulpit, while

my service to Christ puts me in a very public arena, I am

actually a very private person when it comes to my person.

I am asking for your prayers and relish your expressions

of concern; I am asking that you allow me to recuperate in

relative obscurity! I will not know the actual severity of my

cancer until near the end of September, but I will try to

keep you informed through the Church Office. It is my

hope that by early October (at the latest) I can truly cele-

brate with the Psalmist who wrote in a time of difficulty,

“but joy comes in the morning. (Ps. 30:5)”

    Rev. Douglas E. Smith

    replace those of summer. It

is a wonderful time to appre-

    ciate God’s good nature. But

it is also time to get our

    property prepared for the

    cold hard days of winter.

Failure to do so could mean

you are caught with a rake

in your hand when you need

    your snow shovel.

It is also a great time of

    year to renew your commit-

ment to Christ and to a

    deeper, richer, more mean-

    ingful walk with the Lord.

    When you are serious about

    that journey, it doesn’t mat-

ter if winter comes early or

suddenly and hard - you will

    have left nothing undone.

I read a new article yesterday about a person in Florida who runs several compa-

years he raised 151 million dollars, mostly from small donors like you and I. Impres-

The problem is that when he was audited, it was discovered that 131 million dollars

went to salaries and administrative costs across the seven companies he owns. While

this may be unethical, it is not illegal. The problem is not limited to this scoundrel.

He is wealthy and seen as a success. Those who gave to his companies just don’t

know that at least 86 cents of every dollar went to his companies not to the charita-

ble cause for which it was collected.

    Confirmation Classes To Be

    Offered Winter 2020!

    We have received a few

    inquiries about Confirma-

    tion Classes. We have de-

cided to offer the classes in

    the winter sometime after

    the New Year. Classes are

    generally open for students

    in 7th-12th grades who are

    interested in joining the

    church. The sessions are

    designed to help students

    explore their faith journey

    and information about the

    United Methodist Church.

    They usually take place on

    Sunday mornings from

    9:00-10:30. The classes will

    be scheduled for 8 weeks

    and an additional retreat

    session to do some special

    activities. Our hope is that

winter may not be as busy

and it will be easier for stu-

    dents to commit to the

    sessions. If your youth is

    interested in attending con-

    firmation classes, please let

    Sandy Fausey know so she

can be in touch with stu-

    dents and families to see

    what timeframe will work

    best. Email address –

    Thank you, Sandy

    Local Missions of our church

Many opportunities are waiting for you!! Take a step of faith and be a part of something that will change your life. For some, this is not an easy step to take, it is more like a giant leap, with a pinch of fear. Remember, you are not on this jour-ney alone. Just like the poem "Foot Prints in the sand" God is always there. Our church community is also there with a

smile, with an attitude of joy and a helping hand.

In September, Gene Simmers, led a group of our church family, to the Lebanon Res-cue Mission to serve a meal. Look for pictures in the November Beacon. Also, Annissa Lingle and Jay Jurell went to west Philadelphia, to help a church in need, by replacing

    a set of stairs.

There are additional opportunities available: Bethesda mission night run in Harrisburg, Habitat for Humanity and serving a meal to the homeless in Lancaster. Please visit the mission

table and sign up and let the journey begin.

    The Caring Tree

This mission effort was lovingly adopted by the Eric and Beth Hoy. They will be

coordinating all efforts with regard to obtaining information on families who may

be in need of this program. Please do not call the schools directly to try to obtain

information on families as this requires a great amount of discretion and there is a

team for the caring tree actively working on it. If you want to assist this effort in

any way, you’re welcome to contact Beth Hoy by calling 717-503-6100.

    Monthly Book Reviews

Listed below are three book reviews from the church library which is located in the Heritage Room. One review is from the children’s section, one is from the teen’s sec-tion and there is one from the adult section of the library. Enjoy!

The Pumpkin Patch Parable by Liz Curtis Higgs

Here’s a Halloween story you’ll want to share with your kids! In this colorfully illus-trated parable, Higgs weaves a beautiful tale of how a farmer (Jesus) reaches down, picks out a special pumpkin from his garden, and scoops out all the messy “goo” to make room for his light to shine from inside.

Old Enough to Know by Michael Smith

As relevant today as when Michael first wrote, Old Enough to Know, gives straight, Biblical answers to the struggles of growing up: sex, drugs, alcohol, peer pressure, parental conflict, friendship, goals, responsibilities and materialism. Calling it “a book for my friends”, the author assures teens that he knows they are old enough to know the difference between the phony and genuine, and attempts to show how he and other adults have genuinely “been there” and can help.

Boundaries with Kids by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend

Want to paint a happy future for your children? Start drawing the line today! You want your kids to grow up into healthy adults. You want to see them take responsibil-ity for their behavior, their values, their lives. But maybe you’ve discovered that simp-ly telling them to “do the right thing” isn’t enough. From toddler tantrums to teenage temptations, you’ve got to help them take ownership of their behavior, feelings, and attitudes. But how? Establish healthy boundaries. Boundaries are the bedrock of good relationships, maturity, safety, and growth for your children and for you. Bound-aries with Kids will help you prepare your kids to assume responsibility for their own lives. Drawing on principles from the Bible, this book will help you:

    1) recognize the boundary issues underlying child behavior problems 2) set boundaries and establish consequences with kids 3) get out of the “nagging” trap 4) stop controlling your child – and instead help your child develop self-control 5) apply the ten laws of boundaries to parenting 6) take six practical steps for implementing boundaries with your kids

Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend show you how to bring control to an out-of-control family life. How to set limits and still be a loving parent

Happy Reading from the Church Librarians, Kristen Capion and Janell Ault!

in attendance at any given event. PA law states that your background

ance if you have been a PA resident for 10 or more years. If your clearances are within 5

years of an event’s date, please provide a copy of them to the office. We need to keep

them here on file. If you need them, you can obtain them online fairly easily. Call 838-
