PREP® The Course 2012 Planning groupRobert McGregor, MD, FAAP ChairpersonNorman Ferrari III, MD, FAAPJoseph Gigante, MD, FAAPLee Todd Miller, MD, FAAPJay E. Selcow, MD, FAAPTina Tan, MD, FAAP

Here’s what to Expect when You Attend PREP® The CourseA variety of educational formats to meet different learning styles:

• Lectures Cognitive, didactic presentations based on the ABP’s content specifications, with opportunities for questions immediately following each lecture.

• Case Presentations: Diagnosis and Management A series of case studies relating to the lecture topics presented in interactive group settings. Cases in each topic area are presented concurrently throughout the course. Note: The cases in each topic area are presented three times.

• Faculty Panels Faculty panel discussions that provide an additional opportunity to have your questions answered in moderated question-and-answer format.

• Visual Diagnosis A series of photos showing different health issues are made available for viewing during the course. Participants can record their diagnoses and review the diagnosis critiques posted the next day.

• Pre/Post-Course Self-Assessment Prior to each course, participants can view cases and answer diagnosis questions on a Web site. Information provided at the course can aid in properly diagnosing each case. Following the course, a post-course self-assessment is made available with a link to diagnosis critiques.

• “Hot Topics” Since course content is planned many months in advance, it is possible that new or emergent issues relevant to a course topic area may arise in weeks and months preceding the course. Accordingly, some faculty members will be asked to begin their lecture(s) with a ten-minute discussion of hot topics, new protocols, and/or recent clinical advances in their respective subspecialties.

“The Big Easy” beckons, but if your time is limited, here are just a few “must-see’s” that are sure to whet your appetite to return. New Orleans is one of the most lively cities in America. The French Quarter area offers many entertainment options, music venues, and dining experiences. The Court of the Two Sisters, a longstanding N’awlins institution, is famous for both its leisurely Sunday champagne brunches and the Dixieland, blues, and jazz musical talent it rotates through its main dining room and outdoor courtyard during the course of a meal. One of the many things that New Orleans is famous for are the square, powdered sugar doughnuts called “beignets,” and the Café Du Monde is where to find them. The cafe dates back to the 1860’s and is the perfect spot for an evening cup of chicory coffee and relaxation after a long day of learning. Are you bringing the kids with you? There’s plenty for them to do, too. They’ll enjoy everything from up-close encounters with alligators in the swamps to watching acrobatic entertainers in the streets. On a sunny day, visit the Audubon Zoo to see hundreds of different types of wildlife. If it’s rainy, enjoy the magnificent creatures in the Aquarium of the Americas, which houses 15,000 sea life creatures, representing nearly 600 species. To learn more about the area, go to www.neworleansonline.com.

The beguiling smell of barbecue wafting from Oriole Park; the subtle taste of sugar drifting across the harbor from the Domino sugar plant; the contagious roar of laughter of the crowd watching a street performer; the mouth-watering anticipation of a good meal – when in Baltimore, it’s a feast for the senses! The most enchanting of all senses, of course, is taste – and you’ll never want for a good meal in Baltimore. The city has a cornucopia of restaurants, brew houses, neighborhood pubs, bistros, cafes, tea rooms, and eateries that offer savory taste options from around the world. Baltimore’s famous Inner Harbor and the surrounding neighborhoods offer a variety of fine dining, cultural experiences, and exciting nightlife. Baseball fans will want to see Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the beautiful baseball-only facility in downtown Baltimore, which has been the home of the Orioles since 1992. Only 12 minutes west by foot from the Inner Harbor, Oriole Park is state-of-the-art, yet unique and traditional in design. It has many features that are reminiscent of the old-time ballparks of the early 1900s, like Boston’s Fenway Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field. And you’ll want to visit historic Fort McHenry, which defended Baltimore during the War of 1812 and was the inspiration for America’s national anthem. California’s second-largest city and the United States’ eighth-largest, San Diego is famous for its year-round Mediterranean climate, 70 miles of pristine beaches, and a dazzling array of world-class family attractions. Tourist favorites include the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Sea World San Diego, and – especially for the youngsters – LEGOLAND California, a vibrant interactive experience featuring kid-powered rides. Downtown San Diego and the lively Gaslamp Quarter are just three miles from the airport, allowing you to move from jet-lagged to jet-setting in one quick taxi trip. From suave steakhouses to eclectic ethnic fare, dinner clubs, and sultry jazz bars, over 100 restaurants intermingled with dance and drink are all located within blocks of each other. For families, Balboa Park is one of the largest cultural complexes west of the Mississippi. Its lush 1,200 acres are home to 15 museums, numerous art galleries, beautiful gardens, and the Tony Award-winning The Globe Theatres. San Diego County also features 92 golf courses and a variety of exciting participatory and spectator sports, beachfront resorts and luxury spas, gaming, multicultural festivals and celebrations, colorful neighborhoods and communities, and a rich military history.
